0:00:02 > 0:00:07Good evening from Wales Today. The headlines: A hospital apologises

0:00:07 > 0:00:16for the care of 84-year-old Marion John after her surgery. Her

0:00:16 > 0:00:26daughter says she was neglected. mother had died. I pressed the bell

0:00:26 > 0:00:32

0:00:32 > 0:00:36and nobody came. One in three children living in

0:00:36 > 0:00:44poverty and the number rising. A charity says it is a national

0:00:44 > 0:00:49disgrace. This woman struggles to fill in the fridge. I cannot give

0:00:49 > 0:00:53them the things they need. carrier bag charge. Research shows

0:00:53 > 0:00:56a dramatic drop in the number being used. More people are stealing

0:00:56 > 0:00:59trollies and baskets. In tonight's sport: 30 years ago,

0:00:59 > 0:01:02Swansea City at Anfield, John Toshack at the helm. Tomorrow the

0:01:02 > 0:01:04clubs lock horns once again. And the Welsh weather could spoil

0:01:04 > 0:01:14tonight's Welsh derby as the regions get their World Cup stars

0:01:14 > 0:01:16

0:01:16 > 0:01:20back - it's a washout at Rodney Parade.

0:01:20 > 0:01:24The daughter of an 84-year-old woman who died of complications

0:01:24 > 0:01:28after heart surgery says her mother was neglected in her final days and

0:01:28 > 0:01:32the family kept in the dark about her condition. She has told an

0:01:32 > 0:01:37inquest that Marion John was moved 17 times in 19 weeks while she was

0:01:37 > 0:01:43receiving hospital care. The health board at Withybush Hospital in

0:01:43 > 0:01:47Haverfordwest have apologised. Megan Busby arrived at Milford

0:01:47 > 0:01:49Haven's Coroners Court with a husband with one question. Why her

0:01:49 > 0:01:54mother went from being an independent woman to never

0:01:54 > 0:01:58recovering from an operation. Marion John underwent heart surgery

0:01:58 > 0:02:02for a new valve at Morriston Hospital in surgery. She developed

0:02:03 > 0:02:08a series of infections. When transferred to Withybush Hospital,

0:02:08 > 0:02:11her family described communication here as dire. They said she was

0:02:11 > 0:02:15made numerous times between hospitals in the final months of

0:02:15 > 0:02:20her life. Mum's care, 19 weeks in hospital,

0:02:20 > 0:02:27she was moved 17 times. There was poor communication. It was dire at

0:02:27 > 0:02:32the end. The end of her life was not as it should have been. We were

0:02:32 > 0:02:37left alone in a room in Withybush Hospital and my mum had died. I

0:02:37 > 0:02:42pressed the bell and nobody came. Marion John died five months after

0:02:42 > 0:02:45the initial operation. The original cause given on the death so that it

0:02:45 > 0:02:49was bronchial pneumonia. The family disputed for the cause of death and

0:02:49 > 0:02:52it was changed to a condition related to internal bleeding from

0:02:52 > 0:02:56the autumn. A post-mortem showed there was no signs of bronchial

0:02:56 > 0:02:59pneumonia. The health board responsible apologise to the family.

0:02:59 > 0:03:03The health board regrets the distress caused by the

0:03:04 > 0:03:08circumstances surrounding this case and apologises to her family. We

0:03:08 > 0:03:13will review the case in the light of the inquest to ensure any

0:03:13 > 0:03:16relevant lessons are learned. Megan Busby says she can take comfort in

0:03:16 > 0:03:21the accidental death verdict recorded today and hopes the family

0:03:21 > 0:03:24can move on from one of the most distressing times of their lives.

0:03:24 > 0:03:30A leading charity is warning the Welsh government could miss his own

0:03:30 > 0:03:34target of eradicating child poverty by 2020. One in three children in

0:03:34 > 0:03:37Wales lives in poverty. Save The Children says it is a disgrace.

0:03:37 > 0:03:44Caroline Evans has been to Glyntaff Estate in Rhydyfelin near

0:03:44 > 0:03:51Pontypridd to speak to people there about life on the poverty line.

0:03:51 > 0:04:01The ones with the orange stickers on. How much of a saving is that?

0:04:01 > 0:04:03

0:04:03 > 0:04:08About 5. I just looked in the aisle and in the bread stall, I get

0:04:08 > 0:04:18bread for 15p if I go after 6pm. I can get cheap things. Mandy told me

0:04:18 > 0:04:19

0:04:19 > 0:04:24she was embarrassed litter fridge is filled with cut-price fruit. --

0:04:24 > 0:04:28food. I have been here some nights and cried. I cannot give him the

0:04:28 > 0:04:33things he wants. Christmas is round the corner and I have not got the

0:04:33 > 0:04:38money to go out and get everything that he wants. He wants Labour. I

0:04:38 > 0:04:43cannot afford that. I have not got the money. But Mandy is by no means

0:04:43 > 0:04:47alone. -- Lego. Child poverty is growing in Wales. One of the

0:04:47 > 0:04:52official definitions of poverty is where a single parent with two

0:04:52 > 0:04:57children lives are less than 37 a day. The Welsh Government has

0:04:58 > 0:05:02pledged to eradicate child poverty by 2020. But increasingly, those

0:05:02 > 0:05:07working in the field fear that target could slip. It means having

0:05:07 > 0:05:10a life which is effectively stunted. It means having a life where

0:05:10 > 0:05:15opportunity is denied to you. Opportunities that are their

0:05:15 > 0:05:18children get. It means going to bed at night hungry in a cold bedroom.

0:05:18 > 0:05:22A means not being able to study properly, not having health

0:05:22 > 0:05:28outcomes that match other people, not having a life that is less than

0:05:28 > 0:05:34it should be. That is a disgrace. We are allowing this to happen to a

0:05:34 > 0:05:38younger generation. There are 200,000 children in Wales living in

0:05:38 > 0:05:43poverty. 90,000 in severe poverty. It is the highest rate in the UK.

0:05:43 > 0:05:46As a conference to address the issue, the minister responsible

0:05:46 > 0:05:51told me she believed the Welsh government is making a difference.

0:05:51 > 0:05:56But she seemed less confident that they would hit their own target.

0:05:56 > 0:06:01are committed to working right across the Welsh government to take

0:06:01 > 0:06:08positive steps on this. We know Wales is the first country in the

0:06:08 > 0:06:12UK to legislate for Child poverty and we know in law we have those

0:06:12 > 0:06:17responsibilities as have other public bodies. You have pledged to

0:06:17 > 0:06:22eradicate child poverty by 2020, is that there are going to happen?

0:06:22 > 0:06:26have to be positive about that. It is going to be difficult. It would

0:06:26 > 0:06:30not be realistic for me to say otherwise. But with the Palace that

0:06:30 > 0:06:39we have got, we will do our very best to alleviate the effects of

0:06:39 > 0:06:43poverty and to deliver for our children. A child's eye view of

0:06:43 > 0:06:51poverty at this school. The pupils have been exploring what it means

0:06:51 > 0:07:00in their lives. It hurts my heart and other people. It is not fair

0:07:00 > 0:07:03that people are poor and they get treated like they are animals.

0:07:03 > 0:07:10council should give everybody in poverty a home to stay in. While

0:07:10 > 0:07:18for them it is about wanting safer places to play, for others it is a

0:07:18 > 0:07:22question of survival. Back here on the Glyntaff Estate, no-one is rich.

0:07:22 > 0:07:27Managing his extra hard for some. One young woman told me because her

0:07:27 > 0:07:31partner has moved back in with her this week, a benefits -- her

0:07:31 > 0:07:35benefits have been stopped and she has no money to buy milk for her

0:07:36 > 0:07:40baby. She is managing by borrowing from friends and family. Mandy is

0:07:40 > 0:07:46grateful for the money she gets. In a way, she does not think it should

0:07:46 > 0:07:53go up. But she also knows how just a little more could make a huge

0:07:53 > 0:07:58difference. It is heartbreaking. I did a shop yesterday and a boy came

0:07:58 > 0:08:08in and had no money. I had 10 pence change and I said, they you are,

0:08:08 > 0:08:09

0:08:09 > 0:08:13get yourself some sweets. But it is hard to see their little faces.

0:08:13 > 0:08:16Tata Steel is cutting 70 jobs at its Llanwern site in Newport. It is

0:08:16 > 0:08:18closing the part of the business responsible for products like road

0:08:18 > 0:08:22barriers and flooring for the construction industry. The Welsh

0:08:22 > 0:08:25Government says it is disappointed by the news. Union officials are to

0:08:25 > 0:08:28meet with the company to discuss ways to avoid any compulsory

0:08:28 > 0:08:38redundancies, but Tata bosses say the operation has been making a

0:08:38 > 0:08:39

0:08:39 > 0:08:44loss and is no longer viable. has been a really difficult time in

0:08:44 > 0:08:50the business following economic downturn. Particularly, what has

0:08:50 > 0:08:53happened with the construction market. It has a direct impact

0:08:53 > 0:08:56negatively on the local business here.

0:08:56 > 0:08:59A woman who admitted stealing 50,000 pounds from a Wrexham

0:08:59 > 0:09:01charity for herself and her family was rushed to hospital earlier

0:09:01 > 0:09:04after taking tablets during a court hearing. Miriam Beard pleaded

0:09:04 > 0:09:08guilty to nine counts of fraud and theft from the Plas Madoc project.

0:09:08 > 0:09:10She is due to be sentenced in December.

0:09:10 > 0:09:13The commission examining whether the Welsh Government should gain

0:09:13 > 0:09:17additional powers has held its first meeting. The Silk Commission

0:09:17 > 0:09:20met at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. Over the next few months,

0:09:20 > 0:09:23it will discuss whether Wales should have the power to raise its

0:09:23 > 0:09:28own taxes in areas like rubbish dumping and air passenger duty. But

0:09:28 > 0:09:30even the power to raise income tax will be discussed. The chair of the

0:09:30 > 0:09:40Commission, Paul Silk, hopes people from across Wales can have their

0:09:40 > 0:09:46say before it reports back next autumn.

0:09:46 > 0:09:50We will have mechanisms where we go all over Wales, meeting people who

0:09:50 > 0:09:53have things we want to here. Already people have things they

0:09:53 > 0:09:57want to say to us. We want to talk to them.

0:09:57 > 0:10:02Talking of politics, with news of a special series of reports next week,

0:10:02 > 0:10:07here is our political editor. Have you ever wondered where your

0:10:07 > 0:10:11money goes? And how the Government spent it? From now on, the Welsh

0:10:11 > 0:10:16government is making it easier to find out where your pounds, if not

0:10:17 > 0:10:21your pennies, go. Everything that is spent over 25,000 will be made

0:10:21 > 0:10:26available online every month for you to seek at the click of a mouse.

0:10:26 > 0:10:32So the data is all there. But what does it tell us? Join me throughout

0:10:32 > 0:10:37next week to find out. Still to come: They certainly look

0:10:37 > 0:10:43pretty but on the eve of Bonfire Night, there are new calls for

0:10:43 > 0:10:53Chinese lanterns to be banned. biggest concern is injury to

0:10:53 > 0:10:53

0:10:53 > 0:10:57animals. Injury with the wire. It has been at one month since we

0:10:57 > 0:11:00started paying 5p for a carrier bags and the first research has

0:11:00 > 0:11:04been done into its impact. Researchers at Cardiff University

0:11:04 > 0:11:08suggest there has been a dramatic reduction in the use of bags. But

0:11:08 > 0:11:15there have been a few teething problems with more people stealing

0:11:15 > 0:11:20baskets and shopping trolleys. Our reporter is at the supermarket.

0:11:20 > 0:11:26I bet you, like many other people, have got one of these in the car

0:11:26 > 0:11:30boot. It is a bag alive. Since stores have started charging 5p per

0:11:30 > 0:11:35bag, more of us are bringing our own. Research proves that is just

0:11:35 > 0:11:38the case. More than 90% of stores are now charged 5p per bag. That

0:11:39 > 0:11:44does mean that some are charging more and some are still not

0:11:44 > 0:11:50charging a tall. Of those that are, some retailers have reported 95%

0:11:50 > 0:11:56reduction in a number of bags they are giving out. For 70% of shoppers

0:11:56 > 0:12:01agree with the charge. Since the charges come into play, it seems

0:12:01 > 0:12:10some people are turning to stealing trollies? Yes. Whilst the majority

0:12:10 > 0:12:15of us are bringing our own bags and reducing them, apart from reduction

0:12:15 > 0:12:20in the number, they are reporting a reduction in the number of trolleys

0:12:20 > 0:12:24they have. Customers are using them to take they did so. Apart from

0:12:24 > 0:12:28that, we are seeing people are using for bin bags to take their

0:12:28 > 0:12:33route home. On top of that, shops have said they have seen customers

0:12:33 > 0:12:39stuff items into their pockets, handbags. They are carrying their

0:12:39 > 0:12:44goods in their hands. Police have concerns it is difficult now to

0:12:44 > 0:12:48detect shoplifting if that is the case. Yes. We did speak to a few

0:12:48 > 0:12:52individual police officers during our survey and that was one of the

0:12:52 > 0:12:57concerns they raised. For them, it could prove more difficult for them

0:12:57 > 0:13:02to prove a case of shoplifting. Because we are putting things in

0:13:02 > 0:13:09our pockets. I guess for all of us, we have got to remember to take on

0:13:09 > 0:13:14receipt home. What about stores that are not charging? Will they be

0:13:14 > 0:13:19prosecuted? It depends on why they are not charging. Some shops said

0:13:19 > 0:13:22they will not hand out carrier bags. They'd found the whole thing in the

0:13:22 > 0:13:32legislation to difficult. Others said they would change the quality

0:13:32 > 0:13:33

0:13:33 > 0:13:40of the bags. For others, if you do not charge a minimum for a bag that

0:13:40 > 0:13:44fix -- that fits a paper bag, yes, they could be fined up to 5,000.

0:13:44 > 0:13:48Thank you. Since we have been here, shoppers have been coming from the

0:13:48 > 0:13:55tills and have been armed with these bags, ready to go. Obviously,

0:13:55 > 0:13:57the message is getting across. A hotel that was once owned by the

0:13:57 > 0:13:59family of Laura Ashley has been placed in administration.

0:13:59 > 0:14:02Llangoed Hall, near Brecon in Powys, will remain open while

0:14:02 > 0:14:05administrators try to find a buyer for the business.

0:14:05 > 0:14:08The Plaid Cymru MEP Jill Evans is to pay a 500 fine after refusing

0:14:08 > 0:14:12to pay her TV licence. The party's president was taking part in a

0:14:12 > 0:14:14protest by the Welsh Language Society over changes to S4C funding.

0:14:14 > 0:14:23She pleaded guilty at Pontypridd Magistrates Court and says she now

0:14:23 > 0:14:26Politicians and opinion formers should take a stronger stance on

0:14:26 > 0:14:29the threat to English language broadcasting in Wales. That's

0:14:29 > 0:14:34according to the former director of BBC Wales. Menna Richards is giving

0:14:34 > 0:14:36a lecture on the subject in Aberystwyth this evening. Ms

0:14:36 > 0:14:39Richards understands most of recent debate surrounding broadcasting

0:14:39 > 0:14:41here has focused on S4C, but says she's surprised how little

0:14:41 > 0:14:48attention has been given to cutbacks in English language

0:14:48 > 0:14:52programming. I think people have been

0:14:52 > 0:14:56preoccupied by the future of S4C, understandably so. I think that

0:14:56 > 0:15:00perhaps people haven't realised what has been going on behind the

0:15:00 > 0:15:04scenes with English-language television programmes. The people

0:15:04 > 0:15:08who make those programmes at BBC and ITV do a fantastic job. I think

0:15:08 > 0:15:14audiences in Wales deserve more output, more programme that tell

0:15:14 > 0:15:17them something about their lives, reflect their interests and their

0:15:17 > 0:15:20obsessions and passions. Now if you were watching last

0:15:20 > 0:15:22night's programme, you'll have seen our story about the problems some

0:15:22 > 0:15:25disabled people have had getting their NHS wheelchairs replaced or

0:15:25 > 0:15:29repaired. We featured 16-year-old Zoe Walker from Rhos-on-Sea, who's

0:15:29 > 0:15:33been waiting nine months to get her manual chair fixed. Her motorised

0:15:34 > 0:15:36one is also broken. Well, after last night's programme we had call

0:15:36 > 0:15:39from businessman Sir Stanley Thomas, he's offered to make a substantial

0:15:39 > 0:15:49contribution towards the cost of buying a new specialised chair for

0:15:49 > 0:15:51

0:15:51 > 0:15:56Zoe and he hopes others will be moved to step in and help too.

0:15:56 > 0:16:01The weather is taking its toll tonight in Newport. The fire

0:16:01 > 0:16:06service dealing with a number of flooding incidents.

0:16:06 > 0:16:10Torrential rain in Newport over the past few hours. The pitch at Rodney

0:16:11 > 0:16:15Parade is pretty waterlog. We will be there in a moment to see if

0:16:15 > 0:16:18tonight's game is going ahead between the Dragons and the Blues.

0:16:19 > 0:16:28Let us start with football. A big game for Swansea City this

0:16:29 > 0:16:40

0:16:40 > 0:16:46weekend. There has been plenty of history between these Keven Mealamu

0:16:46 > 0:16:49side. It was back in October 1981 that John Toshack took his Swansea

0:16:49 > 0:16:55side to Anfield. Their first year in Division One after winning

0:16:55 > 0:16:59promotion. As a former player, Liverpool was a special place for

0:16:59 > 0:17:05John Toshack. It was an emotional afternoon. Days before, the funeral

0:17:05 > 0:17:10had been held for Bill Shankly. In his honour, Toshack unveiled a

0:17:10 > 0:17:16Liverpool shirt underneath his Swansea tracksuit. It caused a stir.

0:17:16 > 0:17:24Playing that day was a young Alan Curtis. The game ended two-two. He

0:17:24 > 0:17:32remembers it fondly. Anfield still is now one of these

0:17:32 > 0:17:36iconic grounds. It was one of the first games to play Liverpool.

0:17:36 > 0:17:40Certainly at Anfield, a tremendous occasion. Fortunately, on the day,

0:17:40 > 0:17:44we actually performed to a reasonable standard.

0:17:44 > 0:17:47Swansea City players training today. Brendan Rogers says playing

0:17:47 > 0:17:54Liverpool tomorrow will be special and he says this is the level he

0:17:54 > 0:17:58wants his players to be at Week In Week Out.

0:17:58 > 0:18:04The players are obviously looking forward to coming to the big

0:18:04 > 0:18:10grounds and going and performing. It is a brilliant occasion, and

0:18:10 > 0:18:14field, as everyone knows, is a real stadium that is renowned trout the

0:18:14 > 0:18:17world. It is one we are really looking forward to going and

0:18:17 > 0:18:20playing and hopefully getting a result.

0:18:20 > 0:18:24Wales internationals still have a presence at the Reds. It is now

0:18:24 > 0:18:29home to Craig Bellamy. He says he is proud of what Swansea are

0:18:29 > 0:18:34achieving in the Premier League. For me I feel the Premiership would

0:18:34 > 0:18:39be a better place with Swansea in it. The way they go about it and

0:18:39 > 0:18:44with me being Welsh, I'm Cardiff. Would I prefer to see Cardiff doing

0:18:44 > 0:18:48it? Of course I would. At the same time, I am Welsh. Following Swansea

0:18:48 > 0:18:52and seeing how Swansea go about it makes me proud.

0:18:52 > 0:18:581990 was the last time Swansea City faced Liverpool. It was a third

0:18:58 > 0:19:04round FA Cup replay at Anfield. They lost 8-0 that day, thanks in

0:19:04 > 0:19:07part two of Ian Rush. 20 years on, the class of 2011 are out to show

0:19:07 > 0:19:15they belong in the Premier League and can compete at the highest

0:19:15 > 0:19:18level. Aaron Ramsey has responded for the

0:19:19 > 0:19:28first time since he was pictured in a Team GB touch. This is what he

0:19:29 > 0:19:30

0:19:30 > 0:19:34As the debate over whether Welsh players should be allowed to play

0:19:34 > 0:19:39in the GB team, Gary Speed has named his 24 man squad for the

0:19:39 > 0:19:43friendly against Norway a week tomorrow. There is a recall for

0:19:43 > 0:19:49Robert Earnshaw, despite his thigh strain. More from Craig Bellamy as

0:19:49 > 0:19:54you saw him earlier on Sport Wales tonight. Radio Wales has a special

0:19:54 > 0:19:59programme debating the whole Team GB football issue. Back Paste

0:19:59 > 0:20:02Special is at 8:30am tomorrow. Cardiff City have fitness concerns

0:20:02 > 0:20:07ahead of tomorrow's game against Crystal Palace who are a place

0:20:07 > 0:20:12above them in the table. They are assessing David Marshall, who came

0:20:12 > 0:20:16off in their win over Derby. Malky Mackay is hoping the side can build

0:20:16 > 0:20:20on recent good form. They are currently 5th in the championship

0:20:20 > 0:20:25table. I know how much work they are

0:20:25 > 0:20:32putting in at Crystal Palace. They have also got the experience of an

0:20:32 > 0:20:36ex Cardiff City manager. He is a good man and someone who had given

0:20:36 > 0:20:39them a lot of his experience. A good management team there. I wish

0:20:39 > 0:20:42them all the best, apart from tomorrow.

0:20:42 > 0:20:46Let us head back to the torrential rain at Rodney Parade which could

0:20:46 > 0:20:50spoil the weekend's double Welsh derby. The Ospreys welcome the

0:20:50 > 0:20:54Scarlets tomorrow but first, kick off for the Dragons against the

0:20:55 > 0:21:00Blues is due to be at 7pm but right now we don't know if the game is

0:21:00 > 0:21:03going ahead. Let us go live to Rodney Parade. Nice to see you

0:21:03 > 0:21:07drive. I understand the pitch is pretty waterlogged. Is it going

0:21:07 > 0:21:11ahead? The situation here at Rodney Parade

0:21:11 > 0:21:15is uncertain. You can probably see behind me that the ground staff are

0:21:15 > 0:21:18working to try and clear some of the surface water. We have had

0:21:18 > 0:21:21Monsoon like conditions for the last few hours in Newport and it

0:21:21 > 0:21:25looked as though the game would be called off. Nigel Owens, the

0:21:25 > 0:21:30referee, has arrived. He is inspecting the pitch and the call

0:21:31 > 0:21:36will rest with him. It is all to do with players' safety. Dragons coast

0:21:36 > 0:21:43Darren Edwards once the game to go ahead. One option is to push back

0:21:43 > 0:21:47the kick-off to 7:30pm. That is looking more likely. I am joined by

0:21:47 > 0:21:51Richard Parkes, Kingsley Jones and Tom Shanklin. Congratulations on

0:21:51 > 0:21:54your achievements this year. You have seen some extreme conditions

0:21:54 > 0:21:58in your travels. How does this compare?

0:21:58 > 0:22:04I have seen some extreme environments and this is pretty

0:22:04 > 0:22:08close to the jungles of Indonesia. It is a massive game and a lot of

0:22:08 > 0:22:12the World Cup stars are back. The Pro12 kicking of tonight. This is

0:22:12 > 0:22:17hugely frustrating for the coaches? It is. I can understand Darren

0:22:17 > 0:22:21Edwards wanting to play this. They had a tough game in Italy and had a

0:22:21 > 0:22:24hiding last week and they want to put that right. It is the opening

0:22:24 > 0:22:28of the new stand here at Rodney Parade tonight. Many reasons to

0:22:28 > 0:22:32want to get the game going. We have seen the players in the

0:22:32 > 0:22:37tunnel. Massively frustrating for them could rack it is.

0:22:37 > 0:22:41As a player, you probably look at the water and think it is too much.

0:22:41 > 0:22:46Saying that, speaking these -- Kingsley Jones did spot a rainbow

0:22:46 > 0:22:51earlier. It is like trying to empty it for

0:22:51 > 0:22:56Bath with a teacup. The situation looking increasingly

0:22:56 > 0:23:01uncertain but fingers crossed it will go ahead. Join us at 7pm for

0:23:01 > 0:23:05Scrum V Live. We will have the score in the

0:23:05 > 0:23:08evening bulletin if it goes ahead. This weekend, many of you will be

0:23:08 > 0:23:12out enjoying the fireworks. Hopefully the weather stays drive.

0:23:12 > 0:23:17On the eve of Bonfire Night, there are calls for Chinese lanterns to

0:23:17 > 0:23:19be banned. Flintshire council, backed with the

0:23:19 > 0:23:25North Wales Fire Authority, says they are dangerous and are calling

0:23:25 > 0:23:30on the government to ban them. They are the latest craze to make a

0:23:30 > 0:23:34wedding day or Bonfire Night Extra Special. A symbol of Good Hope and

0:23:34 > 0:23:38prosperity. Chinese lanterns have the potential to cause serious

0:23:39 > 0:23:42injury. The family of one of those wanting to see them banned narrowly

0:23:42 > 0:23:47avoided an accident during a holiday in Gwynedd.

0:23:47 > 0:23:53I heard a lot of screaming and shouting. My daughter had been to

0:23:53 > 0:23:57the toilet with her mum. She was running down 30 yards, screaming.

0:23:57 > 0:24:03What it was in the distance was a Chinese lantern heading for the

0:24:03 > 0:24:08tent. It hit the tent, the flames. She pulled it off. If she hadn't

0:24:08 > 0:24:12have got it, those two little boys were inside. With the tent, how

0:24:12 > 0:24:17quickly it would have taken hold, I don't know. It could have been a

0:24:17 > 0:24:22very, very bad accident. This little boy wasn't so lucky. He

0:24:22 > 0:24:25was burnt at a bonfire party in Wrexham last year. He has now

0:24:25 > 0:24:30recovered and while his mother campaigns for a ban, farmers here

0:24:30 > 0:24:35are also convert -- also concerned about the effects lanterns are

0:24:35 > 0:24:41having on the land and livestock. This man farms in North Wales and

0:24:41 > 0:24:48is worried about the cost on cattle. My biggest concern is injury to

0:24:48 > 0:24:52animals with that final of wire which carries it. If it falls, we

0:24:52 > 0:24:56have find bits of wire in the field. Chinese lanterns are a cheap

0:24:56 > 0:25:03alternative to fireworks, you can buy one for less than a pound. You

0:25:03 > 0:25:12won't find any year in this Italianate village.

0:25:13 > 0:25:18Some of these buildings have areas of scientific interest. In general,

0:25:18 > 0:25:22they are not easy to control. This comes on the eve of one of the

0:25:22 > 0:25:25busiest nights for police and the fire service. Between Hallowe'en

0:25:25 > 0:25:29and Bonfire Night last year, there were more than 500 calls to

0:25:29 > 0:25:33officers asking them to deal with anti-social behaviour. This year,

0:25:33 > 0:25:37police have launched a campaign launched at clamping down on those

0:25:37 > 0:25:44who put lives at risk. Wet weather at Rodney Parade

0:25:45 > 0:25:48It has been a wet afternoon across much of Wales. Lots of surface

0:25:48 > 0:25:53water around. The radar picture shows heavy showers near the border.

0:25:53 > 0:25:57We saw the pitch at Rodney Parade. Localised flooding in Newport where

0:25:57 > 0:26:00we have the brighter green colours. Very unsettled. We can be

0:26:00 > 0:26:05cautiously optimistic about the weekend. It is looking largely dry

0:26:05 > 0:26:08with some sunshine, turning cooler. The chart shows low pressure

0:26:08 > 0:26:14dominating our weather at the moment, making things very

0:26:14 > 0:26:18changeable. France -- France trying to push in from France. The

0:26:18 > 0:26:22heaviest of the showers should be this evening, Clearing north

0:26:22 > 0:26:26eastwards to leave drier conditions overnight. The warmth will radiate

0:26:26 > 0:26:31away and it will be a chilly night with temperatures down to six

0:26:31 > 0:26:36Celsius. A few early mist and fog patches tomorrow morning and a

0:26:36 > 0:26:39largely dry day with sunny spells. Turning cloudy through the south-

0:26:39 > 0:26:44east through the afternoon with an outside chance of drizzle. More

0:26:44 > 0:26:48than a winds making it feel cooler. Top temperatures 14 Celsius. For

0:26:48 > 0:26:53Bonfire Night, it should stay dry for most of us but with a small

0:26:53 > 0:26:57risk of drizzle in south-east Wales. It is largely dry on Sunday but

0:26:57 > 0:27:02brightest in the West. Cloudier in the east and cooler with

0:27:02 > 0:27:06temperatures of 10-12 Celsius nearer the seasonal average. As the

0:27:06 > 0:27:11winds continue to bring in cold air from the North, we keep the cooling

0:27:11 > 0:27:14trend into next week and it is remaining unsettled.

0:27:14 > 0:27:19Looks like the sparklers will stay alight.

0:27:19 > 0:27:23Tonight's main headline: French President Nicolas Sarkozy has

0:27:23 > 0:27:27closed the summit of the G20 with a pledge they will fight to defend

0:27:27 > 0:27:33Europe and the euro. That is Wales Today. We will have
