:00:10. > :00:14.Our top stories. David Beckham leads tributes from
:00:15. > :00:20.the world of football to Wales manager Gary Speed.
:00:20. > :00:24.I think he was an amazing, talented player, a player that had such a
:00:24. > :00:28.glittering career. And he had just begun a great career in management
:00:28. > :00:33.as well. Those who played with him and for
:00:33. > :00:40.Gary Speed say they still cannot believe he is dead.
:00:40. > :00:43.I got up this morning and you just think, you know, it must be a dream.
:00:43. > :00:53.The first thing I thought was that it must have been a dream and it is

:01:02. > :01:05.Our other headlines tonight, the largest rescue operation for 20
:01:05. > :01:10.years, an exclusive interview with the survivors of the ship wrecked
:01:10. > :01:14.off the Lleyn Peninsula. Charlotte Church told a media
:01:14. > :01:17.inquiry she had no hiding place from tabloid intrusion.
:01:17. > :01:20.I where first gave birth to my daughter, I wanted to keep it
:01:21. > :01:26.secret for about a week, just so I could have some time with my
:01:26. > :01:31.newborn baby. And it was in the papers within about two days, time
:01:31. > :01:35.of birth and place of birth, her name.
:01:35. > :01:44.And an inspector calls, early- morning raids to track down of
:01:44. > :01:47.thousands of pounds in benefit Hello, good evening. The family of
:01:47. > :01:50.Wales manager Gary Speed say they have been overwhelmed by the
:01:50. > :01:54.support they have received following his death. Friends and
:01:54. > :01:58.colleagues say they are shocked and have described the 42-year-old as a
:01:58. > :02:02.talented footballer with so much passion for the game.
:02:02. > :02:06.Gary Speed's body was discovered at his body -- had his home in Chester
:02:06. > :02:13.yesterday. It is understood he was found hanged. An inquest into his
:02:13. > :02:17.death is due to open tomorrow. He leaves a wife and two boys.
:02:17. > :02:22.It a day after the news, it is still no easier to comprehend. Gary
:02:22. > :02:26.Speed was only 42, and seems to have it all. So how could attend
:02:26. > :02:30.like this? There are now flowers outside the family home where his
:02:30. > :02:35.body was discovered on Sunday. It is understood he was found hanged.
:02:35. > :02:41.Police say there are no suspicious circumstances. Gary Speed was
:02:41. > :02:47.married. He and his wife Louise had two teenage boys who idolised their
:02:47. > :02:50.father. This evening, a friend to read a statement on their behalf.
:02:50. > :02:54.Gary's family would sincerely like to thank all the people who have
:02:54. > :03:02.sent messages of condolences and tributes. It is a very difficult
:03:02. > :03:06.time. They have been overwhelmed by the support, it really has helped.
:03:06. > :03:13.We would ask that of the family are now given the respect of some
:03:13. > :03:17.privacy to grief on their own. We will be making comments and
:03:17. > :03:21.answering questions over the next few days.
:03:21. > :03:25.At football grounds around the country, from Elland Road to the
:03:25. > :03:29.Millennium Stadium in Cardiff where he captained Wales many times,
:03:29. > :03:32.floral tributes spoke of a football man who was loved and respected.
:03:32. > :03:38.His playing career had been outstanding. He had started to
:03:38. > :03:42.blossom as a manager, too. He led Wales to a run of victories in his
:03:42. > :03:48.first year in charge. For he was the best friend to all
:03:48. > :03:54.his players. Those are the sort of things that we could see out there,
:03:54. > :03:58.and we hope we can carry on a Welsh football. It would be superb it we
:03:58. > :04:02.could get qualification, and dedicated to him. Because it would
:04:02. > :04:05.be dedicated on the foundations that he has laid. I cannot believe
:04:05. > :04:10.he will not be able to see it through.
:04:10. > :04:14.Today, flags flew at half mast in memory of the national manager. It
:04:14. > :04:19.reflected the feelings of people across the country.
:04:19. > :04:23.It is very sad. I did not expected. He was doing really well with them.
:04:23. > :04:29.It is unbelievable. You have got to feel sorry for the
:04:29. > :04:37.wife and his children. It is a sad time.
:04:37. > :04:42.Gary Speed had an appeal that extended beyond football supporters.
:04:42. > :04:45.He had been a stand-in captain on the BBC's A Question of Sport
:04:45. > :04:49.programme, where he is relaxed humour and a detailed knowledge of
:04:49. > :04:54.other sports won him new fans. Less than 24 hours before he was found
:04:54. > :04:58.dead, he had appeared as a guest on Football Focus, where he spoke
:04:58. > :05:03.about his future plans. There was no outward sign that anything was
:05:03. > :05:09.wrong. At yesterday's Premier League match at Swansea City, a
:05:09. > :05:13.minute's silence turned into spontaneous applause. He had many
:05:13. > :05:18.friends in football right across the world.
:05:18. > :05:23.I think he was an amazing, talented player, a player that had such a
:05:23. > :05:27.glittering career. And he had just begun a great career in management
:05:27. > :05:32.as well. On behalf of myself and the players and manager and
:05:32. > :05:36.everybody at the LA Galaxy, we would like to send our love and
:05:36. > :05:40.thoughts to his wife and his children and all his family.
:05:40. > :05:46.We played against each other a few times, but I only really got to
:05:46. > :05:51.know him when he came down here. He was one of the first people to make
:05:51. > :05:56.contact, because he wanted the club and national team to be close.
:05:56. > :05:59.Despite his fame and wealth, Gary Speed was famous with his duck --
:05:59. > :06:04.generous with his time. He was happy to sign autographs and pose
:06:04. > :06:08.for photos. Tonight, the Football Association of Wales say they will
:06:08. > :06:11.make sure that Gary Speed is never forgotten. They have opened a book
:06:11. > :06:15.of condolence at their headquarters in Cardiff, and will also consult
:06:16. > :06:22.on plans for a more permanent memorial. Many will want to pay
:06:22. > :06:25.their tribute and mourn a man who had won their affection and respect.
:06:25. > :06:30.Players have been struggling to come to terms with the news, many
:06:30. > :06:36.unable to go on to camera and explain their loss. If Rob Earnshaw
:06:36. > :06:43.played for and with Gary Speed. Today he was outside Cardiff City's
:06:43. > :06:47.stadium to beat a tribute. I got up this morning and I just
:06:47. > :06:56.thought it must be a dream. The first thing I thought was that it
:06:56. > :07:00.must have been a dream and it is not true. And then obviously you
:07:00. > :07:05.start to get everything back, and it is true. It is hard to take. A
:07:05. > :07:10.few weeks ago we had a barbecue, after one of the Games, and his
:07:10. > :07:18.little boys came up to me and said, IM Gary Speed's son. It cannot have
:07:18. > :07:22.your autograph? -- can I have your autograph? And straightaway I
:07:22. > :07:28.thought of things like that. How can his family be feeling? I am
:07:28. > :07:35.devastated, but how are his family? When Did You Last bid to him?
:07:35. > :07:39.For the Norway game here, that was the last time. He was as great as
:07:39. > :07:44.ever and as good as ever. He has been incredible with me, I am lucky
:07:44. > :07:50.to have known him for so long. I have enjoyed his banter of the
:07:50. > :07:59.pitch and in and around the hotels. He has turned the whole of Wales
:07:59. > :08:04.football around. All the players, I am the same. We were all excited.
:08:04. > :08:10.We are excited for what is in the future, because now to be part of
:08:10. > :08:17.this is just the best thing. And for him not to fulfil what was
:08:17. > :08:21.meant to happen, really, you know, it is horrible. I do not want to
:08:21. > :08:26.think about it. We know about Gary Speed the
:08:26. > :08:33.footballer. What was he like as a man?
:08:33. > :08:40.Again, amazing. There was no big ego. He was just this guy who
:08:40. > :08:45.showed the way forward. What happens now? What goes on now, and
:08:45. > :08:50.that is the thing, because he was such a driving force in what we are
:08:50. > :08:56.doing. What is the future? What will go on in the next three or
:08:56. > :09:01.four years? With him gone, what happens now? It is just something
:09:01. > :09:06.that is so shocking and I am so sad and. It will take such a long time
:09:06. > :09:11.to really sink in. If Gary Speed had been Wales'
:09:11. > :09:15.football manager for just over 11 months. But as a player, he had a
:09:15. > :09:21.long, distinguished career, winning the First Division title in 1992.
:09:21. > :09:27.He was also Wales' most capped outfield player, winning 85 caps.
:09:27. > :09:32.We look back at his illustrious career.
:09:32. > :09:36.Gary Speed was born in Flintshire. He went on to become be considered
:09:36. > :09:40.football professional. Even as a young schoolboy, he was tipped for
:09:40. > :09:46.the top. He was an exceptional player. He
:09:46. > :09:51.was quite small for his age, but he had the gift of playing football.
:09:51. > :09:56.Of course, I then heard that his dad was quite a player. His mum and
:09:56. > :10:02.dad and sister came to all the games. He played for me for two-
:10:02. > :10:06.and-a-half years. His professional career began at
:10:06. > :10:10.Leeds United, and the manager, Howard Wilkinson, where he emerged
:10:10. > :10:15.as part of a revered midfield which won the old Division One title in
:10:15. > :10:22.1992. He worked really hard and scored a
:10:22. > :10:26.lot of goals. He gave 100%. This is more about Gary Speed as a
:10:26. > :10:30.person, not necessarily what he did on the football pitch. He touched
:10:30. > :10:35.many people's lives. There are many tributes here.
:10:35. > :10:40.A versatile left-footed player with Everton, Newcastle and Bolton, his
:10:40. > :10:48.power in the air was renowned, as well as it fits best and eye for
:10:48. > :10:52.goal. -- as well as his fitness and eye for goal. He became the first
:10:52. > :10:58.player to make 500 Premier League appearances. His loyalty to Wales
:10:58. > :11:04.was never questioned. Manager -- manager Terry Yorath, gave him his
:11:04. > :11:10.debut against Costa Rica in 1990. His value was such that he became
:11:10. > :11:18.the most capped outfield player, representing his country on 85
:11:18. > :11:23.occasions, 44 of those games as captain. Speed played a key role in
:11:23. > :11:28.Wales' infamous near-misses, such as the defeat against Romania in
:11:28. > :11:34.1993, and leading the team under Mark Hughes into the Euro 2004
:11:35. > :11:41.play-off against Russia. He bowed out on an emotional evening against
:11:41. > :11:45.Poland. But he was to return to the fold, almost a year ago. Back from
:11:45. > :11:50.a fledgling spell as boss of Sheffield United to take over as
:11:50. > :11:54.manager of the Wales national team. Wales were playing the best they
:11:54. > :11:59.had played for a long time. The last results were very good. I
:11:59. > :12:03.think to see how he was doing was a manager -- as a manager was to look
:12:03. > :12:10.at when England have played against Wales at Wembley. They gave us a
:12:10. > :12:14.right game. He thought very much about his career, and thought the
:12:14. > :12:20.same as a manager. The benefit was definitely happening.
:12:20. > :12:26.He was not many people's first choice, but his captain was a bold
:12:27. > :12:30.choice. He gave adoring Welsh fans new hope and expectation for the
:12:30. > :12:34.future. There were other managers being
:12:34. > :12:40.interviewed who had more experience. We did this -- we did not employ
:12:40. > :12:45.them, we employed Gary. He was such a fantastic person. He was a beacon
:12:45. > :12:51.of positivity. He stayed there to sign autographs, he was so selfless
:12:51. > :12:59.in all of his act. The players wanted to play for him because he
:12:59. > :13:03.was Gary. Welsh football has lost a great star.

:13:42. > :13:47.in the air as many a six helicopters were involved as well.
:13:47. > :13:51.Five crew members, including the ship's captain, are still missing.
:13:51. > :13:55.These are the survivors, Roman Savin and Vitaliy Karpenko. They
:13:55. > :14:01.told me they were washed into the sea when the Swanland broke up
:14:01. > :14:09.after it was hit by a giant wave. Luckily, they managed to scramble
:14:09. > :14:14.into a liferaft. TRANSLATION: I realised there was no point in
:14:14. > :14:19.saving it so we should save ourselves. On the one hand, we
:14:19. > :14:24.hoped that there would be a solution, on the other hand it was
:14:24. > :14:34.getting quite scary. We thought people would hit the rocks and
:14:34. > :14:38.there was no chance of survival. There was no chance of relief.
:14:38. > :14:44.Roman Savin had this to say about the RAF search and rescue crew
:14:44. > :14:48.which pick them up in appalling and dangerous conditions. I sincerely
:14:48. > :14:55.thank them because I understand how difficult and dangerous it was.
:14:56. > :15:00.Basically, they are the men who saved our lives.
:15:00. > :15:05.These pictures filmed with an infra-red camera give an idea of
:15:05. > :15:09.just how tricky the rescue was. Prince William was the co-pilot.

:15:14. > :15:20.liferaft before finally, the crewmen were winched one at a time
:15:20. > :15:26.to safety. This was that night in gale-force winds. People say
:15:26. > :15:30.because the Irish Sea is bounded by a land that it is a glorified pond
:15:30. > :15:37.but from my own days in the Merchant Dave -- Merchant Navy,
:15:37. > :15:41.some of the worst experiences I have had are there. The ship's
:15:41. > :15:46.operators Torbulk Shipping Company saying she should have been able to
:15:46. > :15:49.cope with the weather. She was well maintained. This accident was
:15:49. > :15:54.nothing to do with mechanical, the engines did not fail, the steering
:15:54. > :16:00.did not file, it is purely structural from what we can
:16:00. > :16:04.ascertain. From our point of view she is sound, all was. This should
:16:04. > :16:13.not have been a problem. For some reason, which we are trying to
:16:13. > :16:18.ascertain, we have had a serious fatal accident. Debris on the scene
:16:18. > :16:22.filmed by the RAF. In that serious accident, the Swanland sank in
:16:22. > :16:26.minutes. An investigation is now under way into what went so
:16:26. > :16:30.catastrophically wrong. The air sea rescue service will be
:16:30. > :16:35.run by 2016, the UK government has announced tonight. The change which
:16:35. > :16:39.will include RAF Valley, will come in when the Sea King helicopters
:16:39. > :16:43.are retired that year. Ministers say it will not affect the level of
:16:43. > :16:48.service provided but critics say profit will be put before safety.
:16:48. > :16:51.The services need to be upgraded but the government are not prepared
:16:51. > :16:55.to put that on the books so that is why they are going out of the
:16:55. > :16:59.private sector. They are looking for a company to take over,
