:00:04. > :00:07.Good evening. Welcome to Wales Today. Tonight's headlines...

:00:07. > :00:11.Life in prison - two men are sentenced for killing Ben and

:00:11. > :00:17.Catherine Mullaney on their honeymoon in Antigua.

:00:17. > :00:20.Who pays for looking after older people? One council warns of a

:00:20. > :00:23.crisis in meeting the costs of care. Also tonight, tailbacks and delays,

:00:23. > :00:25.as the snow brings misery on North Wales' busiest road.

:00:25. > :00:30.Desiree Phillips died accidentally after taking extra paracetamol

:00:30. > :00:33.tablets. Her family warns of the potential dangers.

:00:33. > :00:43.In tonight's sport, no slip-ups tonight - the Ospreys look for

:00:43. > :00:56.

:00:56. > :00:59.revenge over Saracens to keep their Good evening. Two men who killed a

:00:59. > :01:02.Welsh couple on their honeymoon in Antigua have been given life

:01:02. > :01:07.sentences. Ben and Catherine Mullany, from

:01:07. > :01:09.Pontardawe in the Swansea Valley, were shot in their hotel bedroom.

:01:09. > :01:12.They were both 31. Kaniel Martin and Avie Howell were

:01:12. > :01:22.convicted of their murders and the killing of a local shopkeeper back

:01:22. > :01:29.in July. They could have faced the death penalty. They killed without

:01:29. > :01:37.thought. The prosecutors called it an execution. The denied murder,

:01:37. > :01:47.but the jury was unanimous in its verdict. Kaniel Martin and Avie

:01:47. > :01:50.Howell were regarded as thieves out for easy pickings. But the hot

:01:50. > :01:58.honeymoon of a lifetime event here for Ben and Catherine Mullany

:01:58. > :02:08.turned into a tragic nightmare. have never got over the total

:02:08. > :02:08.

:02:08. > :02:17.disregard for their death and that no remorse has ever been shown.

:02:17. > :02:23.Antigua, tourism is the financial lifeline for the island. There was

:02:23. > :02:32.a public outcry over the shooting. The prosecution echoed that,

:02:32. > :02:41.calling for the death penalty. Now, it mean one face the second trial

:02:41. > :02:51.for the murder of a shopkeeper. The dead couple of the fund set up in

:02:51. > :02:52.

:02:52. > :02:56.their name. Kathleen was a doctor, being a trainee physiotherapist.

:02:56. > :03:05.Those interested in those Koreas have been teamed up with mentors to

:03:05. > :03:15.help them along. I wanted to do it because it was linked up with

:03:15. > :03:21.

:03:22. > :03:30.science. Lately, we have been talking about Work Experience. We

:03:30. > :03:36.have been talking also about books we will need to read. Of course,

:03:36. > :03:38.there Careers, like their leaves, where cut short.

:03:38. > :03:48.Roger Pinney reporting there on the life sentences handed down tonight

:03:48. > :03:48.

:03:49. > :03:53.for the killers of Ben and Catherine Mullany. Heavy snowfall

:03:53. > :04:01.brought traffic to a standstill earlier. A series of minor

:04:01. > :04:11.accidents led to tailbacks and frustration. The worst of the

:04:11. > :04:28.

:04:28. > :04:37.winter weather began to affect around 7 o'clock this morning.

:04:37. > :04:45.tried to get back I get on the road and has stuck straight away. But I

:04:45. > :04:52.get stuck again and I am going home. When I go past Chester, I go stock.

:04:52. > :05:02.But there were no traffic reports. We have had a break. We are going

:05:02. > :05:11.

:05:11. > :05:18.to turn round and go back again. For motorists the council said that

:05:18. > :05:27.they had gritted roads, but that more or snow and hail caused

:05:27. > :05:32.further problems. Now, here is the scene earlier. One man and his dog

:05:32. > :05:42.taking advantage of the weather for a walk in the hills in the Brecon

:05:42. > :05:46.

:05:46. > :05:55.Beacons. Then, a man was recovering in hospital after a robbery which

:05:55. > :06:00.resulted in weapons that he owned, as well as money been stolen. No,

:06:00. > :06:05.how much should we pay for the elderly, Pembrokeshire council has

:06:05. > :06:11.been asked by a judge, for the second time in 12 months to look at

:06:11. > :06:21.how much it pays. The we want to know that our relatives will get

:06:21. > :06:31.the best possible care. But that comes at a cost. Around Wales, the

:06:31. > :06:32.

:06:32. > :06:41.amount their cost of residents per week varies wildly. As far as this

:06:41. > :06:50.form close, it looks smarter than it has ever done. The residents

:06:50. > :06:55.feel proud to have the family coming here to see them. Today,

:06:55. > :07:02.they were told by a judge that they had to go away and reconsider how

:07:02. > :07:08.much BP private care homes. Seven of them to the local authority to

:07:08. > :07:14.the High Court. The Home say they are delighted with the decision.

:07:14. > :07:16.The council says they will consider the matter in the New Year.

:07:17. > :07:26.Pembrokeshire Council has said tonight that adult care is in

:07:26. > :07:34.financial crisis. They point out the one there council is one which

:07:34. > :07:41.pays the higher rate. It was revealed this summer the

:07:41. > :07:51.Pembrokeshire pays 469 per week per resident. In Cardiff, there is

:07:51. > :07:57.

:07:57. > :08:03.a difference of 145, which is paid less in Cardiff. We have a lot of

:08:03. > :08:11.organisations in receivership in Wales. Clearly, we do not want to

:08:11. > :08:18.be fighting everything in the court. The say they are disappointed with

:08:18. > :08:27.the outcome. Disabled they will be looking at all future funding in

:08:27. > :08:37.order to provide a service into the future. Now, we are joined by the

:08:37. > :08:47.Commissioner for elderly people in Wales. Now, the council has seen

:08:47. > :08:50.

:08:50. > :08:54.the simply do not have enough money to pay for this. Yes, there is

:08:54. > :08:58.simply no way that this is a good thing for these things to be

:08:58. > :09:02.settled within the courtroom. We need to take this opportunity to

:09:03. > :09:11.get three systems sorted. So where do we find the money from,

:09:11. > :09:14.because more and more people are going to be needing care? I told to

:09:15. > :09:21.elderly people regularly and they have big worries about the future

:09:21. > :09:27.funding and where this will come from. I think this is also a

:09:27. > :09:32.situation which focuses on how much we value older people, as a society.

:09:32. > :09:35.The answer is, simply, it not enough.

:09:35. > :09:45.Is it inevitable we will all have to pay more from our own pockets

:09:45. > :09:45.

:09:45. > :09:51.for care? The East system is simply not sustainable at the moment. The

:09:51. > :09:57.UK government received a report in the summer of which put forward the

:09:57. > :10:03.recommendations. I welcomed the report, but was concerned that

:10:03. > :10:07.these recommendations may be delayed. I am going to urge the

:10:07. > :10:12.government to or Ginola talk about the situation and move forward to a

:10:12. > :10:18.future which is safe and secure, not only for all people today, but

:10:18. > :10:25.for the increasing number of elderly people and the future.

:10:25. > :10:31.Thank you. Still ahead tonight, and the Blues continue their good start

:10:31. > :10:40.in the Heineken Cup? Parts of the country are under a blanket of snow.

:10:40. > :10:44.We will have all the weather details. A family is calling for

:10:44. > :10:51.Paris that it will to only be available on prescription. It

:10:51. > :10:55.happens after the death of Desiree Phillips. She accidentally took too

:10:56. > :11:05.much paracetamol. Her father said people have to be more aware of the

:11:06. > :11:06.

:11:07. > :11:15.dangers. An aspiring singer whose dream was to appear in the X Factor.

:11:15. > :11:22.Desiree Phillips was 20 and had just become a mother when she went

:11:22. > :11:29.into hospital to have lumps removed from her breast. To deal with the

:11:29. > :11:39.pain, she was diagnosed with paracetamol. Unfortunately, she was

:11:39. > :11:40.

:11:40. > :11:45.taking more tablets than she should have been. She was taking a couple

:11:45. > :11:53.of extra. Nine days after the operation, she was rushed to

:11:53. > :11:57.hospital with liver failure. She died on August 26th. Her

:11:57. > :12:05.grandfather says paracetamol as far too easy to buy and few people know

:12:05. > :12:12.the risks. If it is not just described, I do not think it may be

:12:12. > :12:19.should be out there. There is not enough of awning on it. According

:12:19. > :12:26.to research from Edinburgh University, taking just a couple of

:12:26. > :12:29.paracetamol over the recommended amount can be harmful. Yes, even

:12:29. > :12:38.just a couple of tablets could cause these low level of damage to

:12:38. > :12:48.the lover. If you do that over time, that staggered over dozing could

:12:48. > :12:57.

:12:57. > :13:00.lead to problems. In a statement, the authority said: But her

:13:00. > :13:09.grandfather said that does not goal enough and more should be done so

:13:09. > :13:12.Tens of thousands of party goers are expected in towns and cities

:13:12. > :13:15.tonight for what's become known as "Black Friday". For many, it's the

:13:15. > :13:17.last full working day before the break. The police, along with

:13:17. > :13:22.ambulance staff, are preparing for Christmas casualties. Kate Scott-

:13:22. > :13:32.Williams is in Cardiff for us, Kate. Thanks Tomos and welcome to the

:13:32. > :13:34.

:13:34. > :13:37.Millennium Stadium, where tonight a medical team is basing itself. It's

:13:37. > :13:40.a big night in many towns and cities across Wales with people

:13:40. > :13:43.having left work early to start the festive celebrations on what is

:13:43. > :13:46.annually one of the biggest nights in the calendar. It means it'll

:13:46. > :13:49.also be a busy night for our emergency services. While most

:13:49. > :13:53.people will get home safe in the early hours, others who may need a

:13:53. > :14:03.bit of help can come here and take the pressure off the ambulance

:14:03. > :14:04.

:14:04. > :14:07.service. Cardiff is one of the safest cities in the UK. We're

:14:07. > :14:12.calling on people to drink sensibly. We have a lot of extra officers

:14:12. > :14:17.being drafted into the city centre also defended the needs help, asked

:14:17. > :14:25.the officers on the street. Please look after yourselves and your

:14:25. > :14:30.friends. We are asking people to think and be saved. Have a happy

:14:30. > :14:33.and crime free Christmas. For those who perhaps do not think so much or

:14:33. > :14:38.get into a spot of trouble, what will happen if they get brought

:14:38. > :14:45.here? We have doctors and nurses who can treat them here. We are

:14:45. > :14:54.trying to take the pressure of the accident and emergency department.

:14:54. > :15:00.We have a walk-in centre based on the Grey Friars Road. The street

:15:00. > :15:04.pastas are also on the street tonight. We basically look after

:15:04. > :15:08.people and make sure they have a safe and good night. We give people

:15:08. > :15:13.water when they have had too much to drink. It helps to have hydrate

:15:13. > :15:19.them and it means they do not have to get into accident and emergency

:15:19. > :15:25.was up we also give flip-flops who minus two girls who have taken

:15:26. > :15:30.their shoes off. We do not want them stepping on broken glass.

:15:30. > :15:36.it a reflection of society that yet again we are here needing these

:15:36. > :15:43.kinds of centres? It has become part of Christmas. People come into

:15:43. > :15:48.town on work tools. We're here to help them. Does this relieve

:15:48. > :15:51.pressure on the front line services? Absolutely. The role of

:15:52. > :15:57.the street Pastor des free us up. The service today will be fantastic.

:15:57. > :16:05.It will enable us to handle other calls. Good luck for this evening.

:16:05. > :16:10.The centre will be open from 8:00pm. The team will also be here on --

:16:10. > :16:12.next Friday and on New Years Eve. Compost and cockle shells are being

:16:12. > :16:15.used to clean-up rivers near Aberystwyth. It's a scheme which

:16:15. > :16:18.could be rolled out across the country. The Environment Agency has

:16:18. > :16:28.been trying to stop harmful metals getting into the River Rheidol from

:16:28. > :16:30.

:16:30. > :16:34.From the Bronze Age to the beginning of the 20th century, this

:16:34. > :16:39.valley was alive with a mining activity. These amounts are not the

:16:39. > :16:44.only reminder of the industry which was once so important here.

:16:44. > :16:52.water you can see from despite his from flooded mine workings. The

:16:52. > :17:00.water contains high concentrations of metals such as iron, zinc, lead,

:17:00. > :17:05.cadmium and copper. Some of these metals are harmful to fish and

:17:05. > :17:11.other wildlife. For the past 15 months, Paul Edwards and his team

:17:11. > :17:17.have been trying to prevent the metals from polluting the river.

:17:17. > :17:21.This tank includes compost and cockles. The metal is stripped from

:17:21. > :17:26.the water as it passes through. The results have been good. This is

:17:26. > :17:32.where the water comes out of the tank. There is no orange staining.

:17:32. > :17:38.We have tested the water and found that 99% of the metals had been

:17:38. > :17:43.removed. That is an excellent result. The success of this project

:17:43. > :17:48.has attracted international interest. We have had experts

:17:48. > :17:52.coming in from Japan and elsewhere coming in to try and learn from it.

:17:52. > :18:00.A number of countries are trying to work together to come up with

:18:00. > :18:04.solutions for this problem. Over 200 miles of our rivers are

:18:04. > :18:08.affected by metals from abandoned mines. We can now look at rolling

:18:08. > :18:11.out the scheme to the rest of Wales. Good evening. It's the last round

:18:11. > :18:15.of European rugby matches before the Christmas break. And the turkey

:18:15. > :18:17.will taste a whole lot better if our regions can win this weekend.

:18:17. > :18:20.Tonight, the unbeaten Blues travel to Edinburgh, while the Ospreys

:18:20. > :18:26.can't afford to slip-up as they face Saracens, the side who beat

:18:26. > :18:29.them last weekend. It's probably the match on which their season

:18:29. > :18:33.hinges. If the Ospreys beat Saracens at the Liberty Stadium

:18:33. > :18:36.tonight, the quarter-finals will still be in their grasp. They are

:18:36. > :18:39.confident they can improve on last weekend's result, when they gifted

:18:39. > :18:49.the London club some easy points. But defeat tonight would leave

:18:49. > :18:57.their fate in the hands of others in the final pool matches. We have

:18:57. > :19:01.to cut out the errors. The best teams make the fewest mistakes. If

:19:01. > :19:04.we can do that, we're confident we can win the game. The Cardiff Blues

:19:05. > :19:08.are the only unbeaten region in Europe with three out of three so

:19:08. > :19:11.far. Tonight, they hope to make it four. A second win over Edinburgh

:19:11. > :19:20.would put them in the box seat to qualify for the last eight,

:19:20. > :19:27.although it remains a competitive group. Edinburgh will be wanting

:19:27. > :19:31.revenge. We have to get four points to make sure there is a fight to

:19:31. > :19:34.the bitter end. The Scarlets travel to Munster on Sunday, a place where

:19:34. > :19:36.away victories are rare, again without George North, who's injured.

:19:36. > :19:39.They're still kicking themselves for not taking their chances at

:19:39. > :19:42.Parc y Scarlets last weekend, where they lost out to the former

:19:42. > :19:49.European Champions by just three points. It means they are now

:19:49. > :19:53.chasing Munster for top spot. But they are using it as motivation.

:19:53. > :19:57.The positive is that we are frustrated having lost to one of

:19:57. > :20:02.the teams that consistently do well in Europe. We have to go there and

:20:02. > :20:07.get something out of that game. It is not going to be easy but because

:20:07. > :20:11.of the level of frustration, we are expecting a big performance. There

:20:11. > :20:13.is a key fixture for the Dragons too on Sunday. They hope to avenge

:20:13. > :20:16.last weekend's defeat at Exeter when the men from Devon visit

:20:16. > :20:19.Rodney Parade in the Amlin Challenge Cup.

:20:19. > :20:22.Football. Swansea City fans are preparing for a trip to Newcastle

:20:22. > :20:25.tomorrow, where a tribute will be paid to Gary Speed. Cardiff City

:20:25. > :20:29.face Middlesbrough, a team that the Bluebirds came undone by, when they

:20:29. > :20:34.last met in May. Swansea city's trip to Newcastle tomorrow will be

:20:34. > :20:37.watched by the wife of Gary Speed. She will join fans as they come

:20:37. > :20:47.together to pay tribute to the man that made 285 appearances and

:20:47. > :20:51.scored 40 goals for the Magpies. Bread Of Heaven will be sung in his

:20:51. > :20:53.memory. For the Swans, it's a game they are hoping to keep the

:20:53. > :20:59.momentum going after winning last weekend and inspirational saves

:21:00. > :21:09.from Michel Vorm. It's a first away win that would be a welcome early

:21:10. > :21:10.

:21:10. > :21:15.Christmas Present for the manager. The Ruby as motivated as as to get

:21:15. > :21:23.a win. We will have power loyal supporters making the long journey

:21:23. > :21:27.up. We are coming off the back of an excellent win. We're looking

:21:27. > :21:29.forward to it. In the Championship, it is third against fourth as

:21:29. > :21:32.Cardiff City welcome Middlesbrough, a team that scuppered Cardiff s

:21:33. > :21:37.automatic promotion hopes last time they met back in May. While the top

:21:37. > :21:47.two have slipped up in recent weeks. Cardiff's run mean they're unbeaten

:21:47. > :21:49.

:21:49. > :21:59.in their last 11 games. They are on a good run of form. It is good that

:21:59. > :22:00.

:22:00. > :22:06.we have clubs coming to Cardiff City Stadium with anticipation from

:22:06. > :22:09.our fans to come and watch that as well. We're looking forward to it.

:22:09. > :22:11.In the Blue Square, top of the league Saturday, Wrexham welcome

:22:11. > :22:18.Gateshead. Newport County's match with Fleetwood Town will go ahead

:22:18. > :22:21.after the water logged pitch passed a an inspection this morning.

:22:21. > :22:25.And there's commentary of tonight's rugby on BBC Radio Wales. It's FM

:22:25. > :22:27.for the Ospreys and AM and Digital for the Blues. And there'll be

:22:27. > :22:30.coverage too, of all the football tomorrow afternoon from 1:30pm.

:22:30. > :22:33.The Olympics are now just seven months away. This weekend, many of

:22:33. > :22:36.our top swimmers are getting some vital race practice at the Welsh

:22:36. > :22:39.Open Winter Championships. The event started in Swansea today and

:22:39. > :22:47.finishes on Sunday with the likes of Jazz Carlin, Jemma Lowe and

:22:47. > :22:53.Ellie Simmonds all in action. great practice for all of us. The

:22:53. > :23:01.Olympic trials are only two months away. It is about the hard training

:23:01. > :23:04.now. We have to work on the turf racing and challenge ourselves.

:23:04. > :23:07.72 players were in the draw at the PDC World Darts Championships, but

:23:07. > :23:10.as fate would have it, the two Welshmen involved, ended up playing

:23:10. > :23:13.against each other in the first round. In the end, there was plenty

:23:13. > :23:17.of drama as Richie Burnett caused an upset by knocking out fellow

:23:17. > :23:27.Welshman and former world champion Mark Webster. Burnett, edged a

:23:27. > :23:30.five-set thriller by winning the final set 4-2 in a tie-break.

:23:30. > :23:35.Like hitting the bullseye, it's pretty hard to forecast exactly

:23:35. > :23:44.where the snow will fall. Some parts of North Wales were badly hit,

:23:44. > :23:48.I used to love snow when I was a boy but I'm not so keen on it now.

:23:48. > :23:51.There was less snow in the south than forecast and more in the north.

:23:51. > :23:56.And as expected, some places just had rain. Snow is the hardest thing

:23:56. > :24:01.to forecast. Predicting how much, where and when! You can read more

:24:01. > :24:05.about that on my blog on our nature website. Anyway, some of you did

:24:05. > :24:10.get snow. Eleri Jones sent this photo to me on Twitter showing the

:24:10. > :24:18.Trawsfynydd to Bala road. Ian and Ruth Rees took this one of sheep

:24:18. > :24:22.Now a woolly coat will definitely come in handy this weekend. Staying

:24:22. > :24:29.cold, more wintry showers but I can promise some sunshine as well.

:24:29. > :24:31.Tonight, wintry showers will ease. Dry for a time. Clear skies and

:24:31. > :24:34.some frost and then further showers will spread across the country

:24:34. > :24:37.after midnight. Some heavy and wintry with hail. Temperatures

:24:37. > :24:41.dipping close to freezing or below and the Met Office are warning of
