:00:10. > :00:13.A warning from the boss of the NHS - patient safety could be

:00:13. > :00:18.compromised and less controversial hospital reforms go ahead.

:00:18. > :00:23.At the moment, our services are safe. They are under pressure and

:00:23. > :00:33.if we do nothing then the situation into a three years could be one we

:00:33. > :00:45.

:00:45. > :00:50.Aamir Siddiqi was stabbed to death on his doorstep. The jury is

:00:50. > :00:53.discharged on his murder trial. A professional ballet dancer speaks

:00:53. > :00:58.about he is -- about how he is rebuilding his life after being

:00:58. > :01:04.attacked on a night out. And we look to Scotland to see if

:01:04. > :01:07.the diabetes system there could benefit patients in Wales.

:01:07. > :01:10.Messages from the front line - how the RAF is using the Internet to

:01:10. > :01:18.bring families together this Christmas.

:01:18. > :01:24.And training to defend his title - he leads the field at this year's

:01:24. > :01:28.Welsh National. The head of the health service has

:01:28. > :01:33.told BBC Wales that patient safety is under threat unless

:01:33. > :01:38.controversial hospital reforms are driven through. In his first

:01:38. > :01:42.interview since becoming Chief Executive, David Sissling denied

:01:42. > :01:47.cutbacks were behind the reorganisation. He could see some

:01:47. > :01:53.services moved were downgraded. He spoke to us earlier.

:01:53. > :02:00.Every bed in every ward, every brick and every building - they all

:02:00. > :02:04.come under the control of one man in Wales. This is him - top civil

:02:04. > :02:09.servants rarely step into the media spotlight but David Sissling knows

:02:09. > :02:14.he has his work cut out convincing people that Welsh hospitals have to

:02:14. > :02:18.be reorganised. He says that safety is on the line. Our services are

:02:18. > :02:22.safe at the moment but they are under pressure and if we do nothing

:02:22. > :02:29.then the situation in two, three, four years might be when we come to

:02:29. > :02:33.regret. So if changes are not made, safety could be compromised? Safety

:02:33. > :02:38.could be compromised. That is why we are trying to take the trouble

:02:38. > :02:48.to set out those pressures. Money, or lack of it, is a big driver to,

:02:48. > :02:54.isn't it? -- is a big driver, too, isn't it? Yes, but there are issues

:02:54. > :02:59.of quality and safety. Not so long ago, some of those local

:02:59. > :03:05.populations rose up and rejected plans to close centralised services.

:03:05. > :03:09.In 2012, every health board and Wales is expected to put forward

:03:09. > :03:14.new modernisation proposals. That would make some services more local

:03:14. > :03:20.and move others further away. In West Wales, they are already having

:03:20. > :03:24.to grapple with some of those difficult decisions. They have

:03:24. > :03:31.announced they are making changes to emergency care, cancer care.

:03:31. > :03:34.They say that, at the moment things are not just safe and sustainable.

:03:35. > :03:38.The health board describes some of the services as very fragile,

:03:38. > :03:43.failing to meet clinical guidelines. Their safety is already under

:03:44. > :03:49.threat. At the moment, we are spreading ourselves thinly in terms

:03:49. > :03:53.of costs. We want to develop services that are one hospital

:03:53. > :03:58.across for hospital site. At the moment, the doctors are and buses

:03:58. > :04:05.work very carefully to mitigate any risks but it is difficult across

:04:05. > :04:09.for hospital sites. One of those hospitals could have its accident

:04:09. > :04:15.and emergency downgraded. Campaigners are not convinced by

:04:15. > :04:19.arguments over safety - they think it is down to cutting costs. How on

:04:19. > :04:27.Earth can a service become unsafe one day and yet be saved the day

:04:27. > :04:34.before? It is an attempt to make it unsafe so that it can be moved.

:04:34. > :04:39.This has been done by set -- by stealth. Finding solutions which

:04:39. > :04:46.suit everyone will be an impossible task. Health boards say that people

:04:46. > :04:50.will genuinely part of this decision making process.

:04:50. > :04:57.The jury in the trial of two men accused of killing a teenager on

:04:57. > :05:00.his door she doorstep has been discharged. Ben Hope and Jason

:05:00. > :05:03.Richards denied murdering Aamir Siddiqi and attempting to murder

:05:03. > :05:08.his parents at their home in Cardiff.

:05:08. > :05:11.Aamir Siddiqi was stabbed to death on the doorstep of his home in

:05:11. > :05:20.Cardiff last year. He had gone to answer the door. His mother and

:05:20. > :05:23.father were also at home. They too were attacked. Ben Hope and Jason

:05:23. > :05:28.Richards were on trial for the murder of the 17-year-old and the

:05:28. > :05:33.attempted murder of his parents. They both denied the charges. The

:05:33. > :05:38.jury has been discharged for legal reasons. South Wales police say the

:05:38. > :05:44.prosecution will focus on preparing for the retrial and that the force

:05:44. > :05:51.will continue to support Aamir Siddiqi's family. Int hearing will

:05:51. > :05:58.take place in February. A former police inspector has been

:05:58. > :06:07.jailed after being found guilty of conspiring to help others sex abuse

:06:07. > :06:11.children. Geraint Lloyd Evans was sacked by the force in September.

:06:11. > :06:17.Four people have been released on bail -- three people have been

:06:17. > :06:22.released on bail after a farmer was shot in the leg near Gwynedd. Two

:06:22. > :06:25.guns were stolen as well as cash and jewellery.

:06:25. > :06:35.And you eat factory making car park is to open in Wrexham, creating

:06:35. > :06:36.

:06:36. > :06:38.really 50 jobs. -- and new factory., UK has won a contract to supply

:06:38. > :06:45.Vauxhall and is expanding his business.

:06:45. > :06:50.These are the first signs of better things to come. Staff will be

:06:50. > :06:53.working over Christmas to get things ready. It is great news for

:06:53. > :07:00.Wrexham and the surrounding and b are bucking the trend, considering

:07:00. > :07:07.the current economic climate. It is a merry Christmas for everybody. A

:07:07. > :07:11.bright future for Brett -- for Wrexham and Cobra UK. It is

:07:11. > :07:14.producing everything from sun visors to floors. If you find

:07:14. > :07:19.yourself driving a Vauxhall and the next few years, there is a good

:07:19. > :07:26.chance that parts of it will have been made here. They already make

:07:26. > :07:31.parts for Volvo and Audi. The name on the side may be new but this

:07:31. > :07:36.factory has made car-parts before. Until four years ago, it was run by

:07:36. > :07:42.a German film, which moved to Hungary and Romania. -- a German

:07:42. > :07:47.company. The new factory has had money from the Welsh government to

:07:47. > :07:57.help it open. Cobra uk says some staff may transfer from Welsh pool.

:07:57. > :08:05.

:08:06. > :08:10.It is hoping to create more jobs in Wrexham in the near future.

:08:10. > :08:20.And it is the biggest event on the racing calendar for Wales - the

:08:20. > :08:38.

:08:38. > :08:48.Welsh National. Nicola Smith reports. We at

:08:48. > :08:52.

:08:52. > :09:00.Christmas they did not believe would happen.

:09:00. > :09:09.A man has been charged with an attack on Jack Widdowson. He is now

:09:09. > :09:17.back on his feet. He feared he would not walk again. I could see

:09:17. > :09:27.her I had lost my strength. I had to iron out all the bad habit I

:09:27. > :09:29.

:09:29. > :09:35.used to have and I was dancing. is really important that you

:09:35. > :09:45.concentrate on your core stability. His father is the head of sports

:09:45. > :09:49.

:09:49. > :09:53.medicine at Bath Rugby. It is an extraordinary recovery, from the

:09:53. > :09:59.first couple of weeks to where we are now. We will have a great

:09:59. > :10:02.Christmas. There is no doubt about that. There are still many long

:10:02. > :10:09.hours of physiotherapy ahead but he is more determined than ever to

:10:09. > :10:16.achieve his dream of being a top ballet dancer. I have realised how

:10:16. > :10:20.much I want it and I will not just let an injury get in the way.

:10:20. > :10:26.There are claims that Wales is following -- of falling behind in

:10:27. > :10:32.the management of diabetes. It is because we do not have a computer

:10:32. > :10:37.system to link doctors and medical records. Scotland, which has had

:10:37. > :10:42.the system for years, has offered it to Wales for nothing. We report

:10:42. > :10:47.on the situation north of the border and neck report on his own

:10:47. > :10:50.battle with diabetes. -- make reports.

:10:50. > :10:57.Before I was diagnosed with diabetes I was ignorant about the

:10:57. > :11:00.condition. But over the last six months, I have learned that diet

:11:00. > :11:07.and exercise can help manage the disease, a disease that is growing

:11:07. > :11:11.at an alarming level here in Wales. More than 160,000 people have been

:11:11. > :11:16.diagnosed with tied 1 and type 2 diabetes. The worrying trend is

:11:16. > :11:22.that these figures are rising annually. This year, there were

:11:22. > :11:26.more than 7,000 cases compared to last year. 20 new people get

:11:26. > :11:30.diagnosed with the condition every single day. Despite the trend, many

:11:30. > :11:36.working within the field of diabetes say we are not tackling it

:11:36. > :11:41.as well as our near neighbours. Scotland has what people are

:11:41. > :11:51.calling a diabetes epidemic. Unlike Wales, there is a far more co-

:11:51. > :11:52.

:11:52. > :11:56.ordinated response to tackling it. We can link information from all

:11:57. > :12:01.the GPs' surgeries in Scotland with the database, so that we can have

:12:01. > :12:09.one record for the patience. simple but of these ideas that has

:12:09. > :12:14.been hugely successful and popular with patients. Ross was diagnosed

:12:14. > :12:18.with diabetes more than a decade ago. He has be able to manage his

:12:18. > :12:22.condition far more successfully than any Welsh patient. Self-

:12:22. > :12:30.managed and with diabetes is so important. Anyone with diabetes

:12:30. > :12:40.will recognise the phrase, but pressure, cholesterol, ie screening,

:12:40. > :12:42.all those measurements are on those schemes on the Internet.

:12:42. > :12:50.Scottish Care Information Diabetes Collaboration is the envy of health

:12:51. > :12:54.professionals and male -- in Wales. People from Scotland are offering

:12:54. > :12:58.to come to Wales and talk about Scottish Care Information Diabetes

:12:58. > :13:07.Collaboration. Do not lift the death up -- do not look the gift

:13:07. > :13:10.horse in the mouth. We should be taking up Scotland's offer. We are

:13:10. > :13:15.looking at the Scottish system to see if it could be beneficial to

:13:15. > :13:22.patients in Wales. When that recommendation is made it is

:13:22. > :13:32.something I will decide. It is important that people know that

:13:32. > :13:37.

:13:37. > :13:40.they could change their lifestyle I vowed to quit the life of the

:13:40. > :13:48.couch potato - exercise more, and eat more healthily. So has the

:13:48. > :13:58.regime paid off? Just over six months ago, I weighed just over 17

:13:58. > :14:06.

:14:06. > :14:10.stone. At Les see how much I weigh. That is almost one stone and a. --

:14:10. > :14:13.and a half. But it's not just about weight. When I visited the doctor

:14:13. > :14:16.six months ago my blood tests showed glucose levels that were

:14:16. > :14:25.relatively high - it's this HBA 1C level that indicates how well i'm

:14:25. > :14:30.managing my diabetes, so, its back to my GP. It is six now. That is

:14:30. > :14:35.brilliant. Is that in the normal range? It is in the normal range.

:14:35. > :14:43.Are likely to keep it as that. Do your exercises, follow routine. It

:14:43. > :14:46.has made a future difference. -- a huge difference. Dr Katie Thirlaway

:14:46. > :14:49.of the All Wales Diabetes forum has been my mentor and support during

:14:49. > :14:59.his process - which began back in the summer, six months on, what's

:14:59. > :15:04.her verdict? If you were to lose some or again, you would see other

:15:04. > :15:09.benefits. I would like to see a sustained his weight loss. If you

:15:09. > :15:19.were to lose a little bit more, at the same sort of pace, that would

:15:19. > :15:19.

:15:19. > :15:23.be beneficial. Not too quick. blood glucose level has come down

:15:24. > :15:33.as well. That is what you are aiming at. You are changing your

:15:34. > :15:36.

:15:36. > :15:41.lifestyle, taking more exercise. Eat more of a tree -- eat more

:15:41. > :15:45.moderate food. So, the healthier food, coupled with exercise does

:15:45. > :15:48.seem to have paid dividends. Six months ago I vowed to kick out the

:15:48. > :15:57.curry and chips and say no to the naan, but it's easier said than

:15:57. > :16:04.done. I can't pretend I had become a salad Mon Cher. I do still get

:16:04. > :16:07.cravings for fatty food. But now, chips are an occasional treat. With

:16:07. > :16:16.the blood glucose levels now in the normal range my type two diabetes

:16:16. > :16:22.has been controlled, but only while I stick to this healthier lifestyle.

:16:22. > :16:26.Time for the sport now. Christmas is supposed to be a time

:16:26. > :16:29.of peace and goodwill to all men. But I wonder how much of that

:16:30. > :16:33.there'll be on show at the Cardiff City Stadium tonight as the Blues

:16:33. > :16:37.face the Dragons in the first of four rugby derbies over the festive

:16:37. > :16:40.period. Gavin Henson is due to make his debut for the Blues this

:16:40. > :16:44.evening. Then on Boxing Day, the clash between the Scarlets and the

:16:44. > :16:47.Ospreys is a sell-out. The Scarlets then travel to Rodney Parade for

:16:47. > :16:53.the last game of 2011 - before the Ospreys and the Blues bring in the

:16:53. > :16:55.New Year on the first day of 2012. But it all starts at the Cardiff

:16:55. > :17:02.City Stadium tonight. Former Wales fly-half Gareth Davies is

:17:02. > :17:09.commentating for the BBC at tonight's match. Good evening

:17:09. > :17:13.Gareth. It has been a bleak few weeks for the Welsh region. How

:17:13. > :17:23.important is it that the teams put on a real adverts for Welsh rugby

:17:23. > :17:24.

:17:24. > :17:30.tonight? The season always seems to be kicked -- seems to economy had

:17:30. > :17:40.the derbies. Fans want to see local derbies. Not too much goodwill on

:17:40. > :17:42.

:17:42. > :17:47.display. This season has been very anti-climactic. After the World Cup,

:17:47. > :17:52.things have not developed. It is important that the Welsh public

:17:52. > :17:58.will want to see these matches. Inevitably, a lot of the talk will

:17:58. > :18:03.be about Gavin Henson, making his debut for the Blues. Is this a good

:18:03. > :18:09.game for him to make his comeback? He likes a big stage. It is the

:18:09. > :18:16.return of the prodigal son. He is a hugely talented individual, he has

:18:16. > :18:22.not the build that talent. I think it is an exciting time for him. You

:18:22. > :18:26.could argue it is perhaps his last opportunity. There is not a more

:18:26. > :18:33.testing arena than a local derby. Cardiff Blues playing the Newport

:18:33. > :18:43.Gwent Dragons should be testing. has been an interesting week. The

:18:43. > :18:44.

:18:44. > :18:48.salary cap, is that a good idea? am not sure. I think the outcome is

:18:48. > :18:56.pretty obvious. The important thing for me is the fact that the Welsh

:18:56. > :19:05.Rugby Union, and the regions, they are talking. There are competitive

:19:05. > :19:14.elements, bigger budgets, the French teams. Perhaps they need to

:19:15. > :19:19.work on the marketing side of the game. Irrespective of the Wales

:19:19. > :19:25.play -- of Poole Wales play, they need to take into account the

:19:25. > :19:31.regional teams. You need fans to turn up and support their local

:19:31. > :19:36.regions. Thank you very much. The match is live on S4C and Radio

:19:36. > :19:40.Wales. Kick-off at 7.35. Welsh racing will enjoy its biggest

:19:40. > :19:44.week of the year over Christmas. A bumper crowd is expected at Ffos

:19:44. > :19:47.Las in Carmarthenshire on Monday for their Boxing Day meeting. And

:19:47. > :19:57.the following day, it's the Welsh National at Chepstow where last

:19:57. > :19:58.

:19:58. > :20:02.year's winner Synchronized will return to defend his title. In the

:20:03. > :20:06.rolling Cotswolds this race or strainer is getting his

:20:06. > :20:09.It's a race he knows and loves - having ridden it many times during

:20:10. > :20:12.an illustious career as a jockey. And he's also won it twice as a

:20:12. > :20:15.trainer - including last year's race when Champion jockey AP McCoy

:20:15. > :20:19.guided one of his horses Synchronized to victory over the

:20:19. > :20:24.Chepstow fences. On Tuesday, Synchronized will be back to defend

:20:24. > :20:32.his title. He'll be carrying the same weight as last year which may

:20:32. > :20:38.encourage punters to back him again in 2011. He will be the horse they

:20:38. > :20:47.have to beat. Conditions are similar to last year, he is in the

:20:47. > :20:50.their big chance. He ran a lovely race at Haydock, fingers crossed.

:20:50. > :20:53.O'Neill has a track record of training winners in major races, no

:20:53. > :20:56.expense is spared at the stables near Cheltenham to make sure the

:20:56. > :21:05.horses have everything they need. He'll be entering four of them in

:21:05. > :21:13.Tuesday's race. As far as I can remember this is as good a field as

:21:13. > :21:22.we have seen for many years. We are very lucky to see the talent at his

:21:22. > :21:25.stable. He assures me that there will go to finish 1-4. Also entered

:21:25. > :21:28.this year, the 2009 winner Dream Alliance, owned by a syndicate from

:21:28. > :21:31.Cefn Fforest, whose rags to riches story was turned into a film script,

:21:31. > :21:34.but even they think it's unlikely he could do it again. Vale of

:21:34. > :21:36.Glamorgn trainer Tim Vaughan will also mount a challenge with

:21:36. > :21:40.Stewarts House. The weather forecast suggests that this year,

:21:40. > :21:43.the meeting won't be troubled with the problems that led to it being

:21:43. > :21:49.abandoned last December. This time last year, the Chepstow course was

:21:49. > :21:51.under several feet of snow, so the race was rescheduled in January.

:21:51. > :21:57.Therefore, if Synchronized can win on Tuesday, he would become the

:21:57. > :22:01.first horse to win the Welsh National twice in the same year.

:22:01. > :22:06.That would be one for the record book. That's it from me, have a

:22:06. > :22:10.great Christmas. For the families of front-line

:22:10. > :22:13.troops serving in Afghanistan, Christmas can be an emotional time.

:22:13. > :22:16.But this year the RAF is using the internet, so relatives here can

:22:16. > :22:25.access personal video messages from their loved ones, thousands of

:22:25. > :22:28.miles away. December in the Afghan desert.

:22:28. > :22:30.Around 30,000 people are stationed here, at the British military base

:22:30. > :22:38.at Camp Bastion, including Flight Lieutenant Jamie Elliot from

:22:38. > :22:47.Tredegar. He's serving a six month tour of duty and won't be back home

:22:47. > :22:51.until next year. I think it's fair to say that my Christmas Day this

:22:51. > :22:54.year will be different. I can't say that I won't be happy to be out

:22:54. > :22:58.there, but I would prefer to be at home. Meanwhile, thousands of miles

:22:58. > :23:00.away - in their front room in Tredegar - his parents Joe and Sian

:23:00. > :23:04.are getting ready to watch a special Christmas message from

:23:05. > :23:12.their son. It's the first time they've seen his face since he left

:23:12. > :23:20.for Afghanistan. Here I am saying hello to you. The thinking of you.

:23:20. > :23:26.It is the first tee without him. It is hard. -- the first a year. You

:23:26. > :23:30.get messages by e-mail, but it is not the same. It makes all the

:23:30. > :23:32.difference to see him. This year the RAF has recorded hundreds of

:23:32. > :23:35.Christmas messages from military personnel in Afghanistan. Their

:23:35. > :23:40.familes can then access those messages on their computer using a

:23:40. > :23:43.special website, and individual code, supplied by the Air Force.

:23:43. > :23:52.It's allowed the troops at Camp Bastion to tell loved ones back

:23:52. > :23:55.home just how much they're missed. Nothing is quite the same as being

:23:55. > :23:59.at home with your family. That is why these messages are so important.

:23:59. > :24:04.He gives them a chance to connect with their family, and share their

:24:04. > :24:07.duties, and that the family know they are OK. For Joe and Sian

:24:07. > :24:10.Elliott, Christmas this year was always going to be an emotional

:24:10. > :24:15.time. Their son may be thousands of miles away in Afghanistan, but they

:24:15. > :24:18.can watch his message every day until he comes home next year.

:24:18. > :24:28.Time for the weather - and someone's feeling festive - nice

:24:28. > :24:30.

:24:30. > :24:40.jumper Derek! You have probably seen this

:24:40. > :24:49.

:24:49. > :24:53.somewhere before? It was warned by Matt Smith, Dr Who. Anyway, a

:24:53. > :24:56.jumper like this will come in handy tonight - it's going to be cold but

:24:56. > :24:58.Rudolph won't be too happy with my forecast for Christmas. It's going

:24:58. > :25:01.to be mild, damp and windy. The to be mild, damp and windy. The

:25:01. > :25:04.only snow you'll see will be on your Xmas cards! Now heavy rain

:25:04. > :25:08.today caused some flooding. This picture was taken in Wolfscastle in

:25:08. > :25:14.Pembrokeshire by Geoffrey Eynon. At the moment there are 19 flood

:25:14. > :25:18.alerts in force. One flood warning on the River Solva. Tonight much

:25:18. > :25:20.drier. Just the odd shower. Clear skies. The wind slowly easing and

:25:20. > :25:23.cold. Temperatures inland falling close to freezing with some ground

:25:23. > :25:27.frost. Tomorrow morning. Christmas Eve. A cold start and a dry start

:25:27. > :25:30.for some of us but it won't be dry everywhere. Some rain and showers

:25:30. > :25:32.are likely in parts of the west and the north. So clouding over

:25:32. > :25:40.tomorrow with some patchy rain and showers spreading across the

:25:40. > :25:46.country but with some dry weather in between. The wind picking-up and

:25:46. > :25:51.feeling chilly. Top temperatures 8 to 10 Celsius. Tomorrow night

:25:51. > :25:56.cloudy. Some patchy rain and drizzle. Breezy too. So hopefully

:25:56. > :26:01.Santa won't be blown off course. Christmas Day mild but windy.

:26:01. > :26:04.Cloudy and damp as well. Some light rain, drizzle and hill fog. Drier

:26:04. > :26:09.in parts of the north and east. Top temperatures 13 Celsius in Wrexham.

:26:09. > :26:11.The south-westerly wind fresh to strong. Up to gale force in the

:26:12. > :26:17.north-west. Boxing Day will continue mild and windy. Spots of

:26:17. > :26:19.drizzle and hill fog but some dry weather as well. Temperatures 11 or

:26:19. > :26:22.12 Celsius with a fresh to strong south-westerly wind. So a

:26:22. > :26:25.traditional Welsh Christmas this year. In other words mild, damp and

:26:25. > :26:28.windy. Not very festive but at least there shouldn't be too many

:26:28. > :26:37.travel problems apart from some fog and poor visibility on higher

:26:38. > :26:42.ground. And strong winds. That's the forecast. Time now for

:26:42. > :26:49.the last of the Christmas Pictures. The first by Emily Belby from Barry

:26:49. > :26:51.in the Vale of Glamorgan. The next in the Vale of Glamorgan. The next

:26:51. > :26:58.from Rhys Evans in Williamstown. Helledd Griffiths from Glyndyfrdwy

:26:58. > :27:00.is wishing us a merry Christmas. Our next picture is by Matthew

:27:00. > :27:03.Price from Llandrindod. And finally Christmas lights by Grace May

:27:03. > :27:13.Powell from Talgarth. Thanks very much for all your pictures and

:27:13. > :27:15.

:27:16. > :27:18.photos. Have a lovely Christmas. Nadolig Llawen.
