:00:03. > :00:06.Welcome to Wales Today. Tonight's top story.

:00:06. > :00:10.The first path in the world to stretch along a country's entire

:00:10. > :00:20.coastline. As overseas visitor numbers fall in parts of Wales,

:00:20. > :00:21.

:00:21. > :00:29.hopes it will bring more tourists whatever the weather. We picked

:00:29. > :00:39.this area as having less traffic. If others were open up without so

:00:39. > :00:42.many people, that would appeal to Also tonight. 31-year-old William

:00:42. > :00:48.Jones in court charged with the murder of pensioner Peter Lewis who

:00:48. > :00:51.had learning difficulties. Braving the damp weather to vote.

:00:51. > :00:55.Just hours left now before the polls close in the council

:00:55. > :01:04.elections. The fire service are called in to

:01:04. > :01:10.deliver hay to horses stranded for days with no food. They were

:01:11. > :01:14.starving when we got it. All the polls are well now.

:01:14. > :01:24.The battle for promotion begins. Cardiff are aiming for Premier

:01:24. > :01:25.

:01:25. > :01:28.League status and Wrexham need to Final preparations are being made

:01:28. > :01:34.to open the Wales Coastal Path, the first continuous route around a

:01:34. > :01:39.country's coastline anywhere in the world. It is a lengthy 870 miles in

:01:39. > :01:49.total and has taken six years to complete. Our correspondent Hywel

:01:49. > :01:51.

:01:51. > :01:55.Griffith is in Criccieth for us tonight. We have spent the day here

:01:55. > :02:01.walking bits of the path and plenty of visitors have been taking an

:02:01. > :02:06.interest. The signs mark out the 870 miles of this continuous route

:02:06. > :02:10.around the country. It is hoped this path will bring in an extra

:02:10. > :02:16.100,000 tourists to the country every year. But what is there for

:02:16. > :02:20.them to do? What is there for them to see? The coastal path became

:02:20. > :02:24.Pembrokeshire's unique selling point more than 40 years ago. Now,

:02:24. > :02:27.the rest of Wales is joining in. Despite the weather, local ramblers

:02:27. > :02:37.are celebrating access to 186 miles of coastline just got fully

:02:37. > :02:40.

:02:40. > :02:46.extended to 870. It is great for the community. It brings in

:02:46. > :02:49.economic benefit of up some people think it spoils the privacy but to

:02:49. > :02:53.do something they should be sharing with everybody. It is there for

:02:53. > :02:56.everybody to enjoy. It will be a world first, and the woman who made

:02:56. > :03:03.it happen, former Environment Minister Jane Davidson, lists it as

:03:03. > :03:10.one of her proudest achievements. The planned for that to happen in

:03:10. > :03:14.2012. It was something like Wales's offer for the Olympics. We will do

:03:14. > :03:18.stamina here in Wales. We have a real offer that everyone can be

:03:18. > :03:21.involved in. It is hoped the coastal path will attract an extra

:03:21. > :03:27.100 thousand tourists to Wales and translate into serious cash. It's

:03:27. > :03:32.certainly something that appealed to these intrepid Australians.

:03:32. > :03:36.were attracted to the isolated and remote areas and we pick this it

:03:36. > :03:40.year as having less traffic. If there are others which were opened

:03:40. > :03:43.up without so many people that would appeal to us. Figures from

:03:43. > :03:46.Visit Britain show that we certainly need a boost. Only 3% of

:03:46. > :03:50.overseas visitors who come to the UK make it to Wales. Of those that

:03:50. > :03:54.do come, certain parts do better than others. The southeast saw a 6%

:03:54. > :04:03.rise and visitor numbers grew by 4 % in North Wales, but they fell in

:04:03. > :04:08.Mid and Southwest Wales. The sound of live gunfire, one slight fly in

:04:08. > :04:10.the ointment. There are points along the path where you can't hug

:04:10. > :04:15.the coast, like this military range here in Freshwater West

:04:15. > :04:22.Pembrokeshire. Now they've put in a detour so you can a bit closer but

:04:22. > :04:26.still stay out of the line of fire. A few others areas have also proven

:04:26. > :04:29.tricky so walkers will have to head inland. The National Trust

:04:29. > :04:32.properties that hug the coastline around the Menai Strait will be out

:04:32. > :04:37.of bounds. As will a swathe of coast at Tremadog Bay around

:04:37. > :04:42.Portmeirion. Further south and it will be a similar hike inland to

:04:42. > :04:45.avoid the Dyfi Estuary. Lyn Jenkins, who owns a farm park overlooking

:04:45. > :04:54.Cardigan Bay, has spent thousands in legal fees opposing the coastal

:04:54. > :04:59.path access across his land, arguing it is unsafe for the public.

:04:59. > :05:07.Women, children and toddlers would walk here. The fences on the inside,

:05:07. > :05:11.not on the outside. There is a 150 ft vertical drop. Everybody here

:05:11. > :05:14.has been frightened by this. majority though has been settled

:05:14. > :05:17.through a spirit of co-operation. For the first time, all that Wales

:05:17. > :05:26.has to offer, the steep cliffs, to the lush pastures and rolling sand

:05:26. > :05:31.dunes, will be available should you choose to explore. One of the sites

:05:31. > :05:35.that are run day brings visitors is the medieval castle on the hill.

:05:35. > :05:41.With his coast path bring in extra visitors? I am joined by a couple

:05:41. > :05:47.of guests. You already organise walking tours. How much interest

:05:47. > :05:55.are you getting? We had something like a 50% increase in inquiries

:05:55. > :05:58.from overseas. That is largely from the Continent. People live in

:05:58. > :06:03.countries where there is not a great coastline and they want to be

:06:03. > :06:11.part of the big event. How do you sell it to them? How do make it

:06:11. > :06:20.unique? What would they be able to see? The coastal path is full of

:06:20. > :06:29.history. To encourage them to come, you need to provide services such

:06:29. > :06:39.as meat and Crete and transport and information services. -- meet and

:06:39. > :06:44.

:06:44. > :06:48.greet. Our task wall along is to take the promoted routes that we

:06:48. > :06:54.have and link them altogether. It has been clear from the start that

:06:54. > :07:02.it will be totally impossible to get the coastline all the way

:07:02. > :07:07.around. There are some sites with their art conservation sites. There

:07:07. > :07:15.are a few places where we have not been able to get an agreement with

:07:15. > :07:22.landowners. But you're still trying to iron out the wrinkles? Yes. The

:07:22. > :07:28.current programme has another year to run. Our task is to make it more

:07:28. > :07:33.coastal. I would stress that the path opening on Saturday is a very

:07:33. > :07:37.good product. When you explain the path to your visitors, will you

:07:37. > :07:42.tell them about it occasionally going in off the water could mark

:07:42. > :07:47.yes. It is a misconception, quite understandable, but it is

:07:47. > :07:54.completely coast. We have to Engineer the day's walk to make

:07:54. > :07:59.sure it is as coastal as it possibly can be. The I am sure the

:07:59. > :08:04.authorities will press on. Thank you for joining us. The official

:08:04. > :08:08.launch is on Saturday. They will be 90 organised walks at different

:08:08. > :08:10.points. A man has appeared in court in

:08:10. > :08:13.Cardiff accused of murdering a pensioner in the hallway of his

:08:13. > :08:20.home. 68-year-old Peter Lewis, who had learning difficulties, was

:08:20. > :08:22.found with stab wounds in the early hours of Saturday morning. 31-year-

:08:22. > :08:27.old William Stephen Jones was brought to Cardiff magistrates

:08:27. > :08:29.court accused of the murder of Peter Lewis. 68-year-old Mr Lewis,

:08:29. > :08:35.described by police as a vulnerable adult with learning difficulties,

:08:35. > :08:38.died in hospital in the early hours of Saturday morning. He had been

:08:38. > :08:42.stabbed in the stomach. He was discovered in the communal hallway

:08:42. > :08:45.of his Claude Road flat in the Roath area of Cardiff. He had been

:08:45. > :08:48.a founder member and trustee of the disabled rights group Cardiff

:08:48. > :08:56.People First, who held a collection at a supermarket today in his

:08:56. > :08:58.memory. Colleagues there say he was an inspiration to them all. During

:08:58. > :09:03.the two-minute hearing, William Jones spoke only to confirm is name

:09:03. > :09:11.and gave his address as a flat in Adamsdown. He was remanded in

:09:11. > :09:13.custody until next Tuesday when A community councillor from

:09:13. > :09:18.Manorbier in Pembrokeshire has won High Court backing to be rude

:09:18. > :09:21.online about colleagues in what could be a landmark case. Malcolm

:09:21. > :09:25.Calver had been censured by the Adjudication Panel for Wales for

:09:25. > :09:28.ridiculing his colleagues on a community website. He claimed that

:09:28. > :09:36.was a violation of his freedom of expression and today a High Court

:09:36. > :09:38.Judge agreed, saying politicians are expected to have thick skins.

:09:38. > :09:41.The seafront beach at Rhyl in Denbigshire will remain closed

:09:41. > :09:46.until tomorrow morning at the earliest because of a raw sewage

:09:46. > :09:49.spill. People are being warned to stay out of the sea after a nearby

:09:49. > :09:54.pumping station was flooded during the recent heavy rain causing it to

:09:54. > :09:57.break down and spill the waste. A sub-postmistress who stole more

:09:57. > :10:01.than 14,000 to help keep a community shop open has escaped a

:10:01. > :10:08.prison sentence. Margery Williams from Llanddaniel on Anglesey

:10:08. > :10:11.admitted four charges of fraud against the Post Office. She was

:10:11. > :10:15.given a year's suspended sentence and has already repaid the money to

:10:15. > :10:19.the Post Office. Voters have just a few hours left

:10:19. > :10:23.to get to the polls to elect councillors in all but one of

:10:23. > :10:26.Wales' local authorities. More than 1,200 seats are being contested.

:10:26. > :10:31.Anglesey is the only council not to hold an election. Voters there will

:10:31. > :10:41.have to wait until next year. Our Political Editor Betsan Powys is at

:10:41. > :10:45.Cardiff City Hall for us tonight. Does polling stations have been

:10:45. > :10:52.open since first thing this morning and they remain open until 10pm

:10:52. > :10:59.tonight. There is still time to go and vote. Some 1,200 seats are up

:10:59. > :11:08.for grabs. Councillors will have a pretty tough job to do. Some of us

:11:08. > :11:12.have been voting for town and community councillors as well. But

:11:12. > :11:17.there is no fault on Anglesey. Bat has been delayed for 12 months.

:11:17. > :11:27.That is because external commissioners have taken over the

:11:27. > :11:29.

:11:29. > :11:39.executive roles at that council. A external help means a no vote on

:11:39. > :11:46.

:11:46. > :11:55.Anglesey. It was business as usual. There were concerns about serious

:11:55. > :11:58.issues. While the council gets its house in order, voting is on hold.

:11:58. > :12:03.It feels a bit strange, looking at the country going through an

:12:03. > :12:08.election and we have not got one. We are where we are and we have to

:12:08. > :12:14.get on with it. Changes are being made with progress in improving the

:12:15. > :12:20.way committees are run and better public engagement. Once

:12:20. > :12:25.constituency boundaries are redrawn, polling stations will reopen.

:12:25. > :12:35.think it is about time they grew up and started getting their act

:12:35. > :12:35.

:12:35. > :12:43.together. Not a very happy taxpayer. The market is a fine example of the

:12:43. > :12:48.council not doing a good job of it for the it has been poorly run.

:12:48. > :12:56.Councillors get well paid for up they used to do the job for nothing

:12:56. > :12:59.when I was younger. They get paid a colossal amount of money. The aim

:13:00. > :13:04.of the commissioners is to hand more power back to councillors. If

:13:04. > :13:10.all goes according to plan, Agassi will have its own election this

:13:10. > :13:20.time next year. People will then have a chance to have their say and

:13:20. > :13:23.

:13:23. > :13:29.how the island is run. Unless you live on Anglesey, there are still

:13:29. > :13:34.about three hours left to vote. In some parts of the country, the

:13:34. > :13:43.counting will start immediately. We are hoping that one of the first

:13:43. > :13:48.places to tell us how you voted his own Wrexham. We should know by

:13:48. > :13:56.about one in the morning. That would be followed by places such as

:13:56. > :14:04.Blaenau Gwent, Merthyr Tydfil and Flintshire. We hope we should know

:14:04. > :14:14.by the time you wake in the morning. Early afternoon tomorrow we should

:14:14. > :14:24.know what the results all are. After that, it might still take a

:14:24. > :14:43.

:14:43. > :14:46.bit of battering to find out who is Still to come in the programme

:14:46. > :14:49.tonight. Good evening from the Cardiff City

:14:49. > :14:53.Stadium on the first night of the play-offs. Cardiff fans know all

:14:53. > :14:57.about them, having lost in them for the last two years. Will it be

:14:57. > :15:01.third time lucky this year? Tonight, they face West Ham. And Wrexham

:15:01. > :15:11.fans head to Luton in fine voice, as they try to take a step towards

:15:11. > :15:23.

:15:23. > :15:26.Fire crews in the Vale of Glamorgan have been on a mercy mission to

:15:26. > :15:30.feed a large group of starving horses stranded by rising flood

:15:30. > :15:33.water. Animal welfare campaigners say the 16 horses and young foals

:15:33. > :15:40.have been without food for days and were getting weaker by the hour.

:15:40. > :15:43.Nick Palit reports. Confined to this thin strip of

:15:43. > :15:48.high-ground, a disused railway embankment is the only place these

:15:48. > :15:50.horses can get a firm footing. Normally, they're fed through the

:15:50. > :16:00.fence from the roadside, but local people in Sully haven't been able

:16:00. > :16:01.

:16:02. > :16:07.to get near them for days. 11 horses and five foals were stranded

:16:07. > :16:12.in this field which has turned into a lake after the recent rain. Some

:16:12. > :16:18.of the horses were up to their necks in water. I spoke to who I

:16:18. > :16:23.was told was the owner and he denied ownership. I asked him to

:16:23. > :16:28.move the Hayley Jones airfield and your feet -- refused. They were

:16:28. > :16:35.swimming up to their necks yesterday. So the fire officers

:16:35. > :16:40.were called in to help get dry hay to the starving animals. We have

:16:40. > :16:45.found a route across and the firefighters are checking of the

:16:45. > :16:49.depth as they go. The problem of stray and abandoned horses is

:16:49. > :16:52.widespread across South Wales. The animals are often dumped on other

:16:52. > :16:53.people's land - so-called fly- grazing. Here at Sully, it's a

:16:53. > :16:56.complicated situation. The landowner says they're not

:16:56. > :17:04.trespassing but denies they are his horses, so it falls to volunteers

:17:04. > :17:09.to feed them. I have been working with some of these local people for

:17:09. > :17:14.months. They generously come down on a daily basis to feed the

:17:14. > :17:20.animals. I have been working with the lover of poverty and the police

:17:20. > :17:23.to bring about some sort of action in the interest of the animals.

:17:23. > :17:29.Several trips across the water and it's mission accomplished, for

:17:29. > :17:35.today at least. They are starving when we got up there. But they are

:17:35. > :17:39.all well. All the foals are really well and they will be OK now they

:17:39. > :17:42.have the food. But this isn't a problem that's going to go away and

:17:42. > :17:45.if the rain returns, it looks like fire crews will be back too.

:17:45. > :17:48.People living in a row of cottages in Mumbles, near Swansea, have had

:17:48. > :17:51.to leave their homes after strong winds blew down a tree and

:17:51. > :17:54.dislodged a large boulder resting on the hill above. They're now

:17:54. > :17:57.worried the rock could fall and damage their homes. One resident

:17:57. > :18:07.says he's been forced to stay with family because he fears for his

:18:07. > :18:11.

:18:11. > :18:16.safety. That big boulder and several other small ones, the size

:18:16. > :18:19.of a chair, any of those could start to fall again.

:18:20. > :18:23.A professional golfer from Newport has been recognised for her role as

:18:23. > :18:26.a successful Muslim woman in sport. 24-year-old Sahra Hassan has been

:18:26. > :18:28.named UK Sports Woman of the Year by the Muslim Women's Sport

:18:28. > :18:36.Foundation at Wembley Stadium. The awards honour female role models

:18:36. > :18:39.from the Muslim community who have made sport more accessible.

:18:39. > :18:42.There's a night of unbearable tension ahead for two of our

:18:42. > :18:50.football teams, as the play-offs get underway. And Ashleigh's at the

:18:50. > :18:54.Cardiff City Stadium this evening. Not everyone is a fan of the play-

:18:54. > :18:58.offs but one thing's for certain, they deliver drama and tension on a

:18:59. > :19:01.grand scale. Both Wrexham and Cardiff hope to take a big step

:19:01. > :19:09.towards promotion this evening as the two leg play-off semi finals

:19:09. > :19:12.get underway. This is becoming an annual fixture for Cardiff City.

:19:13. > :19:16.This is the third season in a row they've reached this stage and they

:19:16. > :19:20.know all about the agony, having failed in the play-offs for the

:19:20. > :19:22.last two years. But this year, starting tonight against West Ham,

:19:22. > :19:32.they're hoping the agony will be replaced with the ecstasy of

:19:32. > :19:33.

:19:33. > :19:42.promotion to the Premier League. You would forgive Cardiff fans if

:19:42. > :19:46.tonight their pre-match mood was more, oh no, then here we go. Last

:19:46. > :19:49.year's semi-final defeat by Reading led to a change of manager and a

:19:49. > :19:59.clear out of players but the current boss says even if the fans

:19:59. > :20:02.are a bit wobbly, the players won't be. We find a great season, get

:20:02. > :20:07.into the Carling Cup final and getting to penalties with Liverpool.

:20:07. > :20:13.I think there is a strength of character that will enable us to

:20:13. > :20:16.handle this. Martin McKay is a former West Ham captain and started

:20:16. > :20:20.his managerial reign in Cardiff with a shock victory over his old

:20:20. > :20:25.club. The Hammers got their own back in Cardiff played in the

:20:25. > :20:34.season and they have a superb recent record. When you get to the

:20:34. > :20:41.play-offs, it has become who has the calmest approach on the day.

:20:41. > :20:45.You also need a bit of luck. It's about who tactically gets it right

:20:45. > :20:48.over the 180 minutes. It has been a special season for Wrexham

:20:48. > :20:56.supporters and they would love to see their club return to the

:20:56. > :21:01.verbally. -- Football League. Today, fans boarded buses bound for Luton

:21:01. > :21:07.and the club who beat them at this stage last season. We want to have

:21:07. > :21:12.everybody fresh and fit for these next couple of games. All the

:21:12. > :21:18.strikers scored on the weekend so I am quite pleased. It is a matter of

:21:18. > :21:20.picking a team to win a game. tonight's games are over, it will

:21:20. > :21:27.only be half time but if all goes well, both Wrexham and Cardiff

:21:27. > :21:34.could have one foot at Wembley when the final whistle blows.

:21:34. > :21:40.I am joined by the former Cardiff City and Wales striker, Ian Walsh.

:21:40. > :21:44.What is the minimum requirement tonight? It is still to be in the

:21:44. > :21:49.tide after tonight. It is only half-time tonight. You have to be

:21:49. > :21:52.patient but I think Martin McKay has done particularly well here. He

:21:52. > :21:56.has a team ethic and a play for each other. Cardiff will be

:21:57. > :22:00.difficult to beat. A lot has been made of whether Cardiff do tend to

:22:00. > :22:10.choke on the big occasion. What have you made of the character of

:22:10. > :22:12.

:22:12. > :22:17.this team? Marty McKay it came in at the start of the season and had

:22:17. > :22:20.a big clear-out. He has brought in new faces this season. I think they

:22:20. > :22:25.deserve to be in the play-offs and I think they will be very difficult

:22:25. > :22:30.to beat. I think Cardiff have got a great chance. A quick word about

:22:30. > :22:36.Wrexham who played Luton tonight. Do you think Wrexham can do it this

:22:36. > :22:40.year? They can but what they can't do is go three goals down and a

:22:40. > :22:43.first half an hour like they did last season. They have to be in it

:22:43. > :22:47.over the 180 minutes. Thank you very much.

:22:47. > :22:49.Of course, this stadium is also home to the Cardiff Blues and today,
