:00:14. > :00:18.Welcome to Wales Today, where a homecoming parade is under way to
:00:18. > :00:23.celebrate the achievements of a Libyan said Paralympians. They are
:00:23. > :00:27.on the steps of the Senedd. 68 athletes completed in London, now
:00:27. > :00:33.it is their chance to say thank you for the support, and hundreds have
:00:33. > :00:39.come out to see them. I used to say I do tae kwon do and people said,
:00:39. > :00:45.what's that, but now people say, it's Jade Jones. It's fantastic, to
:00:45. > :00:49.turn round, I know they are proud of us but we are proud of them.
:00:49. > :00:54.see 82,000 people in that stadium cheering for our Paralympians was
:00:54. > :01:04.absolutely fantastic. Nyree Kindred is my second cousin. She had a
:01:04. > :01:12.
:01:12. > :01:16.silver medal and I think she did Good evening. Also tonight: Plaid
:01:16. > :01:21.Cymru leader, Leanne Wood, says green energy and innovation are the
:01:21. > :01:25.keys to kick-starting the economy. One year on from the Gleision
:01:25. > :01:28.mining tragedy, coal producers insist safety in the industry as a
:01:28. > :01:32.priority. And the Tour of Britain roles in to
:01:33. > :01:42.Wales, but for some fans with stick-on sideburns, disappointment,
:01:42. > :01:47.Good evening. Welcome to Wales Today Live from Cardiff Bay this
:01:47. > :01:51.evening. What a summer of Sport it was, and the party is continuing
:01:51. > :01:56.tonight. We I hear live for the homecoming parade to celebrate the
:01:56. > :02:00.achievements of our Welsh Olympians and Paralympians. There are cheers
:02:01. > :02:05.on the stage behind me as they are introduced, cheered by hundreds of
:02:05. > :02:09.people on the stage. I am sure like many back home, you were glued to
:02:09. > :02:14.your TV this summer as we watched all the action, we saw them make
:02:14. > :02:18.personal bests, set world records and win medals. I spoke to many of
:02:18. > :02:22.the athletes here this afternoon, who told me it was really important
:02:22. > :02:27.for them to be here tonight. They wanted say thank-you to the Welsh
:02:27. > :02:30.public for their support this summer, and hundreds are here on
:02:30. > :02:34.this bit of living in Cardiff Bay. I have seen children and buggies
:02:34. > :02:38.and elderly gentlemen in their eighties, all here with their
:02:38. > :02:42.cameras to capture that special moment of their favourite Olympian
:02:42. > :02:48.and Paralympian. Ashleigh Crowter is down at the heart of it with the
:02:49. > :02:53.crowd, and he has spoken to some Olympians and Paralympians.
:02:53. > :02:58.That's right. As you say, the athletes are now taking to the
:02:58. > :03:04.stage. The medalists are the last on, and I am here with two of the
:03:05. > :03:09.gents with the most precious metal of the Mall, Mark Goldberg -- Mark
:03:09. > :03:14.Holborn and Tom James. -- Mark Holborn. Have you ever met before?
:03:15. > :03:19.How well do know each other? We are almost passing ships in the night
:03:19. > :03:23.from the Olympics, which was prior to the Paralympics, but it is a
:03:23. > :03:28.pleasure to meet him. Is it an inspiration to meet each other and
:03:28. > :03:33.meet these athletes you have no doubt been inspired by? Definitely.
:03:34. > :03:37.It is great to see, we amalgamated so get there -- together so well.
:03:37. > :03:42.This is a great way to celebrate together and make it a bigger
:03:42. > :03:48.occasion, it is fantastic. I know you said sometimes you find it hard
:03:48. > :03:57.to let your achievements England. Two events like this help? They do.
:03:57. > :03:59.It is a good feeling. We do what we do. Sometimes you say you do it to
:03:59. > :04:04.win for yourself but when you're there it feels like so much more,
:04:04. > :04:08.and the crowds are fantastic, and it is great to come here and other
:04:08. > :04:13.people to Sears, and for us to say thank you, because there are so
:04:13. > :04:16.many aspects to the Olympic Games, and the Paralympic Games, the
:04:16. > :04:22.volunteers and armed forces and everyone who supported us at home,
:04:22. > :04:25.so it is very important. Mark, you became a national hero overnight.
:04:25. > :04:29.What will the impact be on performances -- of performances
:04:29. > :04:34.like Jaws on the perception of sport and how many people take it
:04:34. > :04:37.up? -- like yours. For me as a professional cyclist albeit with a
:04:37. > :04:42.disability, who hopefully what I and Paralympics GB have achieved
:04:42. > :04:47.over the last few weeks can inspire everyone. Right up to my age from
:04:47. > :04:52.young kids, to take up the sports and have a passion. From my side of
:04:52. > :04:57.the fences is all about ability, not disability, so hopefully what I
:04:57. > :05:00.have achieved can inspire people for the future. You have definitely
:05:00. > :05:06.there has been a huge inspiration. You on stage in a few seconds.
:05:06. > :05:10.Thank you and have a great evening. Those are two gold medallist, we
:05:10. > :05:14.will see more of them later in the programme. You were getting in
:05:14. > :05:18.trouble for keeping them talking, they will be on stage for a few
:05:18. > :05:24.minutes. Sara head, who won bronze in the Paralympics, has been called
:05:24. > :05:27.up. Everyone is getting a huge cheer. Many arrived early this
:05:27. > :05:32.afternoon and were inside the Senedd catching up with each other,
:05:32. > :05:36.and I managed to put four together to tell me about their experiences
:05:36. > :05:40.this summer. I don't think I have ever been
:05:40. > :05:45.surrounded by so much silver and gold. Let me introduce you to two
:05:45. > :05:50.Paralympians, Nyree Kindred and Alec Sean Davis, and two Olympians,
:05:50. > :05:55.Chris Bartley and Jade Jones. Let me start with you, Jade. Many of us
:05:55. > :06:03.almost lost on up -- minds that night when you one. Have you relive
:06:03. > :06:05.it time and time again? I remember two minutes ago -- to go, then I am
:06:05. > :06:10.Olympic champion, in tae kwon do anything can happen so when the
:06:10. > :06:14.buzzer went I went crazy. How much has life changed for uses the
:06:14. > :06:20.Olympics? It has changed a lot, just for tae kwon do to be
:06:21. > :06:25.recognised is amazing. It is still not a mainstream sport, so what is
:06:25. > :06:30.your ambition with it? You are on the crest of a wave of Olympic
:06:30. > :06:35.success, but how would you like it to develop and get children
:06:35. > :06:39.involved? I wanted to be as big as other sports. I used to say I do
:06:39. > :06:44.tae kwon do and people would go, what's that, but now they go, it's
:06:44. > :06:48.Jade Jones in the tae kwon do, so I am happy about that. Chris, for you,
:06:48. > :06:53.an incredible silver on the water at Eton Dorney. Take us back to
:06:53. > :06:57.that moment. It is brilliant. I don't remember much of it. You went
:06:57. > :07:01.very well afterwards. Pretty ill, but the main thing I remember is
:07:01. > :07:05.the unbelievable support in the last 500, so noisy, nothing you
:07:05. > :07:10.would expect for a rowing race. I'm really pleased with the result at
:07:10. > :07:15.the end of the day. I know you need a rest but let's look for years
:07:16. > :07:19.ahead. Are you up for Rio? I had a great time at this Olympics, but it
:07:19. > :07:24.is four years, a lot can happen, so many young people are coming
:07:25. > :07:28.through in a sport that could beat me out. I'm sure they won't!
:07:28. > :07:34.Hopefully see you there. For the moment, relish the silver. Nyree
:07:34. > :07:38.Kindred, if I can come to you, a veteran Paralympian, your 4th Games,
:07:38. > :07:42.how was London? Absolutely fantastic, walking out from my race,
:07:42. > :07:45.that gave me the advantage of any Games I have been too, the crowd
:07:45. > :07:49.behind us and my daughter in the crowd spurred me on to swim faster.
:07:49. > :07:54.We saw their heroes Parade, many swimmers in the national pool in
:07:54. > :07:58.Swansea, what reaction are the youngsters giving you? Tickets are
:07:58. > :08:02.loving it and if we can inspire a future generation, that is our aim.
:08:02. > :08:07.Now we have competed in London we can inspire future generation.
:08:07. > :08:11.I really enjoyed watching you. Aled committee were one of my favourite
:08:11. > :08:15.celebration moments, just incredible, I can see you proudly -
:08:15. > :08:20.- Paddy were in a muddle. That discus thrower was unbelievable.
:08:20. > :08:24.was big for me. The Iranian guy had chased me all the way through and
:08:24. > :08:28.pulled at six lifetime bests, which is phenomenal. I knew he wouldn't
:08:28. > :08:33.go out with a fight -- without a fight. It was his 5th game and he
:08:33. > :08:37.won silver every time. I can see how determined you were. How
:08:37. > :08:42.important was having a family on home soil with you? It was my first
:08:42. > :08:47.Games, and a home Games was incredible. My brother came from
:08:47. > :08:50.Australia to see me, which was amazing. It was such an emotional
:08:50. > :08:54.roller-coaster, the whole experience. When I finished
:08:54. > :08:57.competing it was sad, but I was happy. It was an epic journey.
:08:57. > :09:02.you posted any letters from the gold postbox at the end of the
:09:02. > :09:08.street? Not yet. I went home yesterday to see its, but I haven't
:09:08. > :09:11.managed to. You can post Christmas cards from there. I probably will,
:09:11. > :09:16.just for that! Congratulations everybody and have a great evening
:09:16. > :09:20.tonight. Well done. Alex just had the lead most huge
:09:20. > :09:24.cheer as he was introduced on the stage behind me. We will speak to
:09:24. > :09:28.his incredibly proud parents in a moment, but Jason Mohammad is
:09:28. > :09:38.tonight compere of the event. Let's see who he is introducing. Tom
:09:38. > :09:49.
:09:49. > :09:59.There he is, you can just see Tom James on the stage now. A huge
:09:59. > :10:00.
:10:00. > :10:05.cheer for him as well, and Mark Colbourn, here we go now...
:10:05. > :10:12.We have been waiting all day to see, back in Wales, from the world of
:10:12. > :10:22.tae kwon do, gold medallist, your gold medallist, Jade Jones!
:10:22. > :10:35.
:10:35. > :10:41.Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, once again, your Olympic and
:10:41. > :10:51.Paralympic champions, Team GB, give them a very warm reception! Welcome
:10:51. > :10:57.
:10:57. > :11:02.CHEERING AND APPLAUSE a huge cheer for the Team GB athletes.
:11:02. > :11:10.Very well done. Two people screaming loudly are the parents
:11:10. > :11:14.are valid Sean Davis. Jacquie and you. He was very excited. How has
:11:14. > :11:18.this roller-coaster ride been this summer? Gosh, absolutely amazing.
:11:19. > :11:23.We are a hive. I don't think we will ever come down. We are so
:11:23. > :11:28.proud. You so you -- we saw you both cheering him on and you were
:11:28. > :11:34.very emotional. It was incredible. We were willing him to win and
:11:34. > :11:38.carry on. It is very hard to describe unless you are a parent
:11:38. > :11:44.and you have somebody doing that in front of you, it's awesome. He has
:11:44. > :11:47.worked so hard for this, hasn't he? Very hard, yes. He deserves it and
:11:48. > :11:53.am so pleased. I was thrilled with the bronze, and they thought, great,
:11:53. > :11:57.he's done something he wanted to do, but when he had the gold, oh, my
:11:57. > :12:02.gosh, absolutely fantastic. What was it like watching that moment,
:12:02. > :12:09.breaking world records? I was watching but Jacquie wasn't! I
:12:09. > :12:15.thought I was going to die, so nervous! On that day, a whole arena,
:12:15. > :12:21.80,000 people -- watching Aled and the Iranian, a little cheer went up
:12:21. > :12:26.when the Iranian failed to mates -- to beat Aled, and when Aled through
:12:26. > :12:30.again and threw it another metre, the reef just came off. And he
:12:30. > :12:35.hasn't said he did it, but have you posted letters from the gold
:12:35. > :12:41.postbox? I have, definitely. Enjoyed every minute? Of course, it
:12:41. > :12:45.was wonderful. Lovely to Spytty. The chair of Sport Wales, Laura
:12:45. > :12:49.McAllister is here. Alec's parents are very proud, but this is a
:12:49. > :12:53.celebration for all the Welsh athletes. I am as proud of Aled as
:12:53. > :12:58.his parents. It is fantastic to see so many people come up to say thank
:12:58. > :13:01.you for bringing incredible joy to us this summer, and it is up to us
:13:01. > :13:05.for -- to make the most of it and build on the legacy and ensure
:13:05. > :13:10.children have the opportunity people like Josie, Aled and Mark
:13:10. > :13:13.Colbourne have had. Thank you. Much more from here and the steps of the
:13:13. > :13:18.Senedd in Cardiff Bay and a Welsh athletes a little later in the
:13:18. > :13:21.Good evening. At Plaid Cymru's annual conference, party leader
:13:21. > :13:25.Leanne Wood has promised a Green New Deal to rejuvenate the Welsh
:13:25. > :13:27.economy. She told delegates in Brecon that the country is being
:13:28. > :13:37.held back by "economic underdevelopment". Our political
:13:37. > :13:42.editor Betsan Powys is there. Thank you. It has been a busy day
:13:42. > :13:46.in Brecon, a busy political day. Leanne Wood using a first
:13:46. > :13:51.opportunity to talk to delegates at the look -- at the annual
:13:51. > :13:57.conference. They had been other attractions in town as well.
:13:57. > :14:00.Following them all was our political reporter, Carl Roberts.
:14:00. > :14:03.The flags were out in force and Brecon today although it was the
:14:03. > :14:10.tour of Britain thundering through the town that brought the people
:14:10. > :14:15.out. The cyclist had left by the time the main conference attraction
:14:15. > :14:20.to to the stage at a Theatr Brycheiniog. Leanne Wood has been
:14:20. > :14:30.in her job for six months and lot of her time has been taken
:14:30. > :14:33.
:14:33. > :14:43.reorganising her party. On stage today her message was not aimed for
:14:43. > :14:45.
:14:45. > :14:54.the members. What you see and what you hear is what you get with me. I
:14:54. > :14:59.promise that is my last joke before I address you all. The views from
:14:59. > :15:02.appear stretch for miles into the heart of Wales. It is there that
:15:02. > :15:07.Leanne Wood's focusing her attention and she looks the
:15:07. > :15:14.solutions to the problems facing the Welsh economy. She has taken
:15:14. > :15:20.inspiration from 1930s America. She is launching a new deal for Wales.
:15:20. > :15:23.Wales needs jobs. There is plenty of work that needs doing. Like
:15:23. > :15:30.President Roosevelt and his economic plans in the USA of the
:15:30. > :15:40.30s, Wales needs a new New Deal, a Green New Deal. It was a lot -- a
:15:40. > :15:41.
:15:41. > :15:45.speech light on detail. They will be years of door knocking, to
:15:45. > :15:49.eating, a million conversations in order for her party to govern. For
:15:49. > :15:55.Leanne Wood the one conversation is over, for her party there are
:15:55. > :15:58.plenty more to come. Before Leanne Wood had to leave
:15:58. > :16:03.Brecon and hotfoot it to joining the celebrations with the Olympians
:16:03. > :16:07.and Paralympians in Cardiff Bay, I managed to catch up with them and
:16:07. > :16:13.ask why it was she had concentrated and focused so exclusively on the
:16:13. > :16:17.economy and on jobs. It is clear that whenever you -- wherever you
:16:17. > :16:27.go people's main concern is the problem with the economy. People
:16:27. > :16:28.
:16:28. > :16:32.are struggling to put food on the table and pay their bills. 24% of
:16:32. > :16:38.youth unemployment is in Wales and it is imperative we put our efforts
:16:38. > :16:41.into creating jobs and hope for young people for the future. What
:16:41. > :16:46.about the Green New Deal? It is a slogan but I don't know what it
:16:46. > :16:51.means. It means creating jobs in the green sector, it means building
:16:51. > :16:56.and resilience in our economy by creating more renewable energy and
:16:57. > :17:01.producing more food. It does mean that there will be a jobs scheme
:17:01. > :17:05.for young people and jobs created which is what we need as a do you
:17:05. > :17:09.accept that Plaid Cymru had a long way to go to persuade voters in
:17:09. > :17:14.Wales that you do hold the key to the economy before they are
:17:14. > :17:18.persuaded to vote for you again? have got to do that were,
:17:18. > :17:22.persuading people and making sure that they understand what our
:17:23. > :17:27.programme is. A week is a long time in politics a four years as a very
:17:27. > :17:31.long time and that means we have the time to do this work. When we
:17:31. > :17:36.do it will deliver the results we want. No talk of independence in
:17:36. > :17:40.your speech, is it because it is a battle lost? Everybody understands
:17:40. > :17:44.what our position is on independence. People want to hear
:17:44. > :17:51.from Plaid Cymru about what we intend to do about the current
:17:51. > :17:57.economic situation. We will hear of it again? Yes, you will hear of it
:17:57. > :18:01.again. As Leanne Wood and said, the next Welsh elections and not until
:18:01. > :18:08.2016 bits you be aware that by then she will have to find some ways of
:18:09. > :18:12.closing this deal that was on offer today. Delegates will be back here
:18:12. > :18:18.in Theatr Brycheiniog tomorrow. If you want to watch proceedings live
:18:18. > :18:22.you can tune in to BBC Two at 2 o'clock. We will be live between 2
:18:22. > :18:26.o'clock and four o'clock tomorrow. But from Brecon, back to you in
:18:26. > :18:30.Cardiff. It's a year since four men died in
:18:30. > :18:33.the Gleision mining tragedy in the Swansea Valley. A collapse in a
:18:33. > :18:36.small drift mine a shocking reminder of the dangers of the
:18:36. > :18:44.industry. Also a reminder that a coal industry still exists here,
:18:44. > :18:50.employing around 1,200 people. Nick Servini reports. The desperate
:18:50. > :18:54.rescue attempts formed part of the long and sometimes tragic history
:18:54. > :19:02.of coal mining in Wales. But small drift mines like Gleision without
:19:02. > :19:07.large machinery are now few and far between. A very sad and the
:19:08. > :19:14.unfortunate incident. But I think it has to be said that the Gleision
:19:15. > :19:18.mind was not representative of what we do in deep mining in the UK
:19:18. > :19:23.today or even in South Wales. Safety is less of an issue for most
:19:23. > :19:28.Welsh mining now as its overwhelmingly carried out on
:19:28. > :19:33.opencast sites. Whether from the surface and underground, finding
:19:33. > :19:36.people to sell coal to is not a problem with the Port Talbot
:19:36. > :19:42.steelworks and the Aberthaw power station in the Vale of Glamorgan,
:19:42. > :19:47.both massive coal burners. For a mind like this in any family having
:19:47. > :19:51.such major customers virtually on his doorstep is a big advantage. As
:19:51. > :19:55.ever with the coal industry it is all about the cost of getting at it
:19:55. > :20:00.compared with the price you can sell it. Currently, there is it
:20:00. > :20:05.global surplus of coal which has driven the price down. The company
:20:05. > :20:10.here says 90 jobs are at risk. Where does that leave the future?
:20:10. > :20:15.The chairman of Tower Colliery which was the last deep pit in
:20:15. > :20:20.Wales believes it is promising. have got the cold, we have got the
:20:20. > :20:27.market. All we need to do, if we wanted to, is get their minds. At
:20:27. > :20:31.the moment I see the next 10 years in place. Coal-mining in Wales is
:20:31. > :20:34.changing and growing. The only place in Britain where production
:20:34. > :20:38.has increased this year. Nick Servini on the state of the
:20:38. > :20:41.coal industry in Wales. On Monday we'll hear from families who lost
:20:41. > :20:46.loved ones at Gleision here on Wales Today and on a special Week
:20:46. > :20:49.In Week Out that's at 8.30pm. Three people have been treated in
:20:49. > :20:51.hospital after an outbreak of Legionnaires' disease in Carmarthen.
:20:51. > :20:56.It's contracted by breathing in droplets from contaminated water
:20:56. > :21:00.and can be fatal. Health officials say they're trying to identify the
:21:00. > :21:05.source. The cases all have links to the town but are no longer in
:21:05. > :21:07.hospital. The commissioners helping run
:21:07. > :21:16.Anglesey Council are recommending the Welsh Government cuts the level
:21:16. > :21:18.Some of the world's best cyclists have spent the day racing through
:21:18. > :21:21.Wales as the Tour of Britain continues. But Bradley Wiggins, The
