:03:19. > :03:23.Ten years ago, scientists in Cardiff made a world breakthrough
:03:23. > :03:28.in treating infertility. They found what was termed "the spark of life"
:03:28. > :03:30.protein which must be present in an egg for life to begin. Now, the
:03:30. > :03:33.same team has beaten scientists from around the world again and
:03:33. > :03:43.discovered how to use that protein to help certain forms of male
:03:43. > :03:50.
:03:50. > :03:55.infertility. You can see that the protein is been injected directly
:03:55. > :03:59.into the egg and that is what causes the egg to activate.
:03:59. > :04:01.It has taken ten years of research to get to this point. But now
:04:01. > :04:05.scientists in Cardiff understand how to take the protein they
:04:05. > :04:07.discovered as vital to fertility and use it to create life. It is a
:04:07. > :04:17.breakthrough which could eventually offer hope to infertile couples
:04:17. > :04:18.
:04:19. > :04:26.across the world. We believe that it could be potentially applied to
:04:26. > :04:33.patients that are infertile, that their infertility is caused by a
:04:33. > :04:36.defect in their ability of their spare arm to activate the egg.

:04:48. > :04:58.Since then they have been in a race with scientists across the world to

:05:08. > :05:08.
:05:08. > :05:13.very hard for the last 12 years. When we find out that this protein
:05:13. > :05:15.did rescue certain types of infertility, it was really amazing.
:05:15. > :05:19.And it poses new questions to be answered.$$NEWLINE As scientists

:06:27. > :06:29.
:06:29. > :06:38.this research in Cardiff is? It is very exciting. We have always been
:06:38. > :06:44.looking at ways in which we could aid in fertility in men. Sometimes,
:06:44. > :06:48.some couples have complete failure of fertilisation of the eggs, which
:06:49. > :06:54.means they have no embryos to go back into the uterus and no chance

:07:00. > :07:02.fertilisation, it will be wonderful for these couples.
:07:02. > :07:11.Realistically, how long would it take to get from this development
:07:11. > :07:16.stage to being available for infertile couples? It is some way
:07:16. > :07:21.off. First of all, they will have to discover how they can use this
:07:21. > :07:25.knowledge any clinical way. How can they actually put it into practice
:07:26. > :07:30.in a clinic? That is going to take a number of trials and research and
:07:30. > :07:34.then there will obviously be safety studies and clinical trials, so we
