:00:00. > :00:08.Welcome to Wales Today. Our top story.

:00:08. > :00:11.An airport the size of Gatwick here. Could Cardiff and Bristol be

:00:11. > :00:18.replaced by a new operation in the Severn Estuary?

:00:18. > :00:21.They took to the streets to protest against fracking in Wales. Tonight,

:00:21. > :00:26.a senior government minister throws his weight behind shale gas.

:00:26. > :00:32.One of Britain's top chefs, Bryn Williams, is to open a new eatery on

:00:32. > :00:34.the North Wales coast. It's all over. 1,800 competitors

:00:34. > :00:43.from 40 countries in Tenby's Ironman.

:00:43. > :00:46.They've only been there twice before. Jubliation for fans and

:00:46. > :00:48.players. Glamorgan are in a Lord's final for the first time in 13

:00:48. > :01:10.years. Good evening. Plans for a new Welsh

:01:10. > :01:13.airport the size of Gatwick have been submitted to the Airports

:01:13. > :01:16.Commission. The man behind the plans says the Welsh Government should

:01:16. > :01:20.sell Cardiff airport and invest the money in the new site. Severnside

:01:20. > :01:32.Airport would replace Cardiff and Bristol and be built in the Severn

:01:32. > :01:38.Estuary. Jordan Davies has more. Hong Kong, one of the most iconic

:01:38. > :01:42.cities in the world. Served by an engineering marvel. Hong Kong

:01:42. > :01:47.airport. It was built on an island halfway around the world had decades

:01:47. > :01:54.away from anything seen in Wales. Or is it? The air jet shaded in dread

:01:54. > :01:58.could become Severnside Airport, a project with a runway built on a

:01:58. > :02:04.man-made island in the Severn estuary. A similar proposal was

:02:04. > :02:14.dismissed in number of years ago over a lack of concern -- over a

:02:14. > :02:18.concern of a lack of passengers. But it is said now that the input could

:02:18. > :02:31.be used to transform the Welsh economy. We would like the airport

:02:31. > :02:36.owners to invest in the new airport. We think it will be possible to get

:02:36. > :02:47.over international funds rather like the ones that come in to and

:02:47. > :02:52.Heathrow who would be able to put in serious fans of money into building

:02:52. > :02:58.the airport. The scale would be remarkable. It would open in 2029

:02:58. > :03:05.and Caddick 14.1 million passengers a year. But a trip -- relies on the

:03:05. > :03:11.sale of Cardiff and Bristol airports. Bristol is seen as one of

:03:11. > :03:15.the best performing regional airports and they have called the

:03:15. > :03:25.plan is far-fetched. Cardiff has seen its passenger numbers halved

:03:25. > :03:32.from its highest total two years ago. Plans for the revamped Cardiff

:03:32. > :03:39.have been submitted as the Western Gateway. I do not think this will be

:03:39. > :03:43.given the go-ahead. There are a variety of options for the Davis

:03:43. > :03:53.commission put up this is one option. If this blue sky thinking of

:03:53. > :03:57.a concrete proposal? Either way, the plans are for the future. It will be

:03:57. > :03:58.a couple of years before we find out whether these proposals will take

:03:58. > :04:10.off. Simon Calder is the travel editor of

:04:10. > :04:19.the Independent. How likely is it that this Severnside Airport will be

:04:19. > :04:28.built? I would probably give it 100 or 500 to one. -- against. That has

:04:28. > :04:32.been an obsession about what we will do in the London area. This would

:04:32. > :04:36.remind the Davis commission will have an awful lot of proposals to

:04:37. > :04:41.sit through that that is an awful lot to be considered beyond Wales.

:04:41. > :04:46.The basic problem is that you need to have a national airport for the

:04:46. > :04:50.national capital and about the last place you would put it if you were

:04:50. > :04:58.starting afresh is south-west of Cardiff. It is almost easier to get

:04:58. > :05:09.to Bristol from East Cardiff until the current airport. What is the

:05:09. > :05:14.future for the airport? It will not come forward and less radical steps

:05:14. > :05:18.are taken. If you look at Iceland, it has set itself up as the aviation

:05:18. > :05:23.hub of the north Atlantic and is doing well as they had. It is

:05:23. > :05:27.possible but if you could knew and a line in, you could offer something

:05:27. > :05:31.similar was up Cardiff is in a much better position in terms of

:05:31. > :05:39.connecting to north America but we are a long way from that at the

:05:39. > :05:42.moment. It is for the Welsh Government to question how can they

:05:42. > :05:51.get things better than they are in now. It is up to them to question

:05:51. > :05:58.how they can get into a wider UK provision? Ultimately, it will

:05:58. > :06:06.depend on the commission on whether to expand Heathrow or do nothing

:06:06. > :06:09.which will have an impact on Wales. The best result for travellers and

:06:09. > :06:14.the Welsh Government would be to get some real tension going between

:06:14. > :06:19.Cardiff and Bristol to get them closer in scale and that will have

:06:19. > :06:34.lots of benefits for travellers and for the taxpayers in Wales.

:06:34. > :06:37.A 22-year-old man from Newport has appeared in court charged with three

:06:37. > :06:41.counts of attempted murder following a shooting in the city last week.

:06:41. > :06:44.Lewis Bridge was arrested on Friday. A second Newport man, who was

:06:44. > :06:50.arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, has been released on police

:06:50. > :06:53.bail. A pensioner who admitted having

:06:53. > :06:56.almost a quarter of a million child sex abuse images has been jailed for

:06:57. > :06:59.12 months at Caernarfon Crown Court. 71-year-old Robert O'Brien from

:06:59. > :07:02.Benllech on Anglesey was also ordered to register as a sex

:07:02. > :07:07.offender for ten years. The court was told that many images were of

:07:07. > :07:10.the most serious kind. Cheaper fuel bills and energy self

:07:10. > :07:13.sufficiency. That's what supporters of Shale gas promise. It's suggested

:07:13. > :07:16.that South Wales has huge reserves that could be tapped by a process

:07:16. > :07:19.called fracking. But protestors in the Vale of Glamorgan have already

:07:19. > :07:22.made clear their opposition to exploiting those reserves. Tonight a

:07:22. > :07:24.senior government minister threw his weight behind the exploitation of

:07:25. > :07:28.shale gas. Our Environment Correspondent Iolo ap Dafydd is

:07:28. > :07:35.here. How significant is Ed Davey's speech? He is the UK energy

:07:35. > :07:41.minister. He is a Liberal Democrat and part of the coalition government

:07:41. > :07:49.but also he follows the Chancellor and also the Prime Minister in

:07:49. > :07:55.supporting shale gas. A clear, warm support for shale gas. As long as it

:07:55. > :07:59.is done in an environmentally friendly way and is economically

:07:59. > :08:04.viable. That is a long way to go before we approach the situation we

:08:04. > :08:12.have seen in America never hundreds of gas trials across the country. It

:08:12. > :08:19.is inevitable that another new energy source will be controversial?

:08:19. > :08:27.Fracking is taken as an abbreviation for all kinds of gas drilling. We

:08:27. > :08:31.have seen protests in Wales, in the Vale of Glamorgan last year. There

:08:31. > :08:42.was a drilling application to look for cars -- to look for gas. It is

:08:42. > :08:48.relevant that people follow the arguments for this. With the

:08:49. > :08:54.publication of another report by the Department of energy and climate

:08:55. > :08:59.change, it says shale gas is not as bad as people make out. Less

:08:59. > :09:07.emissions than burning coal or LNG gas. What could it mean for Wales?

:09:07. > :09:15.The minister was cautious, much more cautious than the Prime Minister. In

:09:15. > :09:21.-- if licences are issued by the Department, that will affect

:09:21. > :09:27.everyone in these areas. If we do have shale gas, it means we will

:09:27. > :09:34.import less LNG liquid gas into Pembrokeshire. That could affect the

:09:34. > :10:05.application for a new power station in Pembrokeshire.

:10:05. > :10:17.To Welsh MPs have been questioning the former director-general of the

:10:17. > :10:42.BBC about the size of redundancy pay-outs to senior executives. The

:10:42. > :10:45.Conservative MP and Labour sit It was short listed for the title of

:10:45. > :10:47.Britain's Worst New Building, the Carbuncle Cup.

:10:47. > :10:50.Though visitors this summer didn't seem to mind how it looked. Today,

:10:50. > :10:53.First Minister Carwyn Jones opened Porth Eirias, a multi-million pounds

:10:53. > :10:57.watersports centre on Colwyn Bay promenade. He revealed that the food

:10:57. > :11:04.outlet there is to be run by one of Britain's top chefs. Roger Pinney is

:11:04. > :11:14.there. The involvement of Bryn Williams means this development will

:11:15. > :11:19.serve more than teas and coffees. There have been seaside cafes and

:11:19. > :11:30.Colwyn Bay from far as long as anyone can remember. This answers

:11:30. > :11:34.the usual fare. It is closing down in October. It is a decision by the

:11:34. > :11:41.council. The operator says he would be more than happy to compete with a

:11:41. > :11:48.newcomer across the way. I think it will be very expensive. We do not

:11:48. > :11:53.know yet. Bryn Williams says he will be catering for a wide variety of

:11:53. > :12:02.tastes and pocket. He is one of the country 's best-known chefs. Quite a

:12:02. > :12:11.catch for the town. His involvement was announced by the first Minister

:12:11. > :12:18.today. I did not want to go through my whole career without cooking in

:12:18. > :12:23.Wales. I left when I was 20 and it would be a shame if I could not cock

:12:23. > :12:34.back in Wales. His arrival is a Wellcome boost for the water sport

:12:34. > :12:43.centre. Good weather in December coupled with improvements -- good

:12:43. > :12:51.weather in the summer coupled with improvements could lead to better

:12:51. > :13:00.times. It is part of a wider project to boost this flagging resort. We

:13:00. > :13:04.have thought of adding a water sports centre as well. It is a

:13:04. > :13:10.fantastic project. Colwyn Bay can then look back towards the sea with

:13:10. > :13:15.more people in the summer. Criticism comes easy. A celebrity chef will

:13:15. > :13:21.bring something new to this part of comes easy. A celebrity chef will

:13:21. > :13:28.the North Wales coast. It is important that as the first Minister

:13:28. > :13:34.said to put it in context. It is part of a much wider waterfront

:13:34. > :13:38.project. That has been a refurbishment of the promenade and

:13:38. > :13:44.even the beach I am standing on is man-made. Half 1 million of sand was

:13:44. > :13:50.pumped in here in the spring. It is not finished yet. Perhaps in time,

:13:50. > :13:53.critics were learned to love this place.

:13:53. > :13:57.You're watching Wales Today. Much more to come before seven o'clock.

:13:57. > :14:01.Glamorgan are hunting silver-wear for this trophy cabinet. They're

:14:01. > :14:06.gearing up for their first final at Lords in 13 years. And there was no

:14:06. > :14:08.lazy Sunday in Tenby this weekend. Thousands turned out for the Ironman

:14:08. > :14:20.event. Earlier we were talking about the

:14:20. > :14:24.plans for an airport for the Severn Estuary. Of course, a barrage across

:14:24. > :14:27.from South Wales to Western Super Mare has long been discussed. But

:14:27. > :14:30.tonight one of its leading supporters, the MP for Neath Peter

:14:30. > :14:32.Hain, has criticised the UK Government for dragging its feet

:14:32. > :14:35.Hain, has criticised the UK over the proposal.

:14:35. > :14:41.Its supporters say it would give us energy for the future. Opponents say

:14:41. > :14:45.it would be a disaster for the Severn wildlife. The latest scheme

:14:45. > :14:47.to build an 11-mile long barrage across the Severn would cost

:14:47. > :15:00.£25-billion and take around seven years to complete. The various

:15:00. > :15:05.schemes to build a barrage have come and gone down the years. This latest

:15:05. > :15:13.tourist centres on an exchange of letters between Peter Hain and the

:15:13. > :15:17.Chancellor. The letters show Mr Osborne saying I need to see more

:15:17. > :15:21.evidence surrounding the cost, benefits and impacts before I can

:15:21. > :15:25.look at it includes -- greater detail. Mr Hain says I can only

:15:25. > :15:31.conclude the government is not interested. The government is not

:15:31. > :15:38.engaged properly. I have spent a year trying to persuade them

:15:38. > :15:43.privately. I am fed up. They keep asking for more information. They

:15:43. > :15:49.treat it differently compared to other power station and nuclear

:15:49. > :15:52.power. Mr Hain wrote to the Chancellor after what he called the

:15:52. > :15:55.negative attitude of the Energy Department and the scheme's had a

:15:55. > :15:58.rocky ride since it was first unveiled. In June, the Commons

:15:58. > :16:01.Energy Committee said the case for the barrage was unproven, there was

:16:01. > :16:04.a lack of information and a perceived lack of transparency. It

:16:04. > :16:07.went on to say that the company promoting the plans, Hafren Power

:16:08. > :16:12.has yet to provide robust and independently verified evidence of

:16:12. > :16:15.the viability of the project. Despite Mr Hain's frustration, the

:16:15. > :16:18.company behind the scheme says it says it's still working hard to

:16:18. > :16:25.convince ministers to give it the green light. I do not think it is

:16:25. > :16:30.dead in the water. We might need a new focus and perhaps get the

:16:30. > :16:34.government more involved as an active partner in the project going

:16:34. > :16:45.forward. I do not think that take long to bring about. The options

:16:45. > :16:50.remain on the table. People are coming out with new plans all the

:16:50. > :16:56.time. That is a significant amount of tidal power available there. The

:16:56. > :17:00.average output could be the equivalent to a couple of power

:17:01. > :17:04.stations. The government insists no decision has been made, and it's

:17:04. > :17:06.willing to look at any new evidence. So the plans remain on the table for

:17:06. > :17:14.now. But it's also clear they're no So the plans remain on the table for

:17:14. > :17:16.nearer being turned into reality. After years of campaigning by

:17:16. > :17:19.parents, Wales' largest Welsh language primary school has opened

:17:20. > :17:22.its doors to pupils for the first time. Ysgol Treganna in the Canton

:17:22. > :17:25.area of Cardiff cost nearly £10-million. It was built to address

:17:25. > :17:28.the demand for Welsh-medium primary school places in the west of the

:17:28. > :17:30.city. Buildings, spare places and

:17:30. > :17:34.performance will be looked at as part of a review of education in the

:17:34. > :17:37.St David's area by Pembrokeshire Council. It will also consider the

:17:37. > :17:40.future of Ysgol Dewi Sant, the city's secondary school. Parents

:17:40. > :17:43.have been concerned that it could close as the council tackles surplus

:17:43. > :17:46.places in the secondary sector. A woman has been bitten by a

:17:46. > :17:50.ten-foot long python in Swansea. Sue Cull suffered bites to both her legs

:17:50. > :17:53.while walking through long grass in the Dyfatty area of the city. Police

:17:54. > :17:59.say a python had been reported missing but has now been captured.

:17:59. > :18:02.There were scenes of euphoria from Glamorgan's cricketers at the

:18:02. > :18:06.weekend. They're are heading to Lord's for only the third time in

:18:06. > :18:10.their history. Glamorgan are in the final of the YB40, after beat

:18:10. > :18:14.Hampshire. Claire's live at the Swalec Stadium tonight.

:18:14. > :18:22.Thank you, good evening. Welcome to the memorabilia room here at the

:18:22. > :18:29.home of Glamorgan. The cupboards been bare for the last few seasons.

:18:29. > :18:35.They last won silverware in 2004 when they lifted the Sunday League

:18:35. > :18:38.trophy. But fans, who've been snapping up tickets, are hoping the

:18:38. > :18:48.Lord's final a week Saturday will mean a new piece of silverwear is

:18:48. > :18:59.brought home to Wales. Some that app for us? My feet haven't touched the

:18:59. > :19:06.floor yet. We were underdogs in Hampshire. We did not play like it.

:19:06. > :19:11.It was an outstanding performance. Many did not think you had it in the

:19:11. > :19:18.U. Is a performance like that, with everybody coming together,

:19:18. > :19:24.syndication against criticism? It proves the ambition is here. We have

:19:24. > :19:28.been telling people for a while but we are a good side. It is tough to

:19:28. > :19:33.get people to believe you when the performances and not necessarily

:19:33. > :19:37.there. Another competition was disappointing this year. To get

:19:37. > :19:42.through to this final now shows the character in the side to bounce back

:19:42. > :19:50.and put the performances in to get to the final. What does a

:19:50. > :19:56.performance like that to four confidence? A lot of people said we

:19:56. > :20:08.were underdogs and it did not fancy ass. They thought we were underdogs

:20:08. > :20:21.-- fancy ass. We will take plenty of confidence in the B final. --

:20:21. > :20:24.entered the final. I have been trying to avoid the game they are

:20:24. > :20:29.playing tonight. It'll be a tough game. Congratulations we will be

:20:29. > :20:34.watching you closely. Football and Gareth Bale will not

:20:34. > :20:36.start for Wales against Serbia. Manager Chris Coleman says he could

:20:36. > :20:39.start for Wales against Serbia. be on the bench tomorrow night, but

:20:39. > :20:43.he's under no pressure to play the most expensive player in the world

:20:43. > :20:47.at the Cardiff City Stadium. Bale has had a scan today, and if that's

:20:47. > :21:03.ok, Coleman could use him as a replacement. Today, he is thinking

:21:03. > :21:09.he wants to have a scan and that it is clear. Psychologically, that will

:21:09. > :21:19.put his mind at rest. His life has been turned upside down. He wants to

:21:20. > :21:21.have that peace of mind. If he comes back, he will play some part

:21:21. > :21:25.tomorrow night. Tenby came to a standstill yesterday

:21:25. > :21:28.as 1,500 competitors from around the world took part in the third Ironman

:21:28. > :21:34.Wales contest. Nearly 90, a record breaking number, were from

:21:34. > :21:35.Pembrokeshire. Organisers say they're delighted with the local

:21:35. > :21:46.support. Abigail Neal reports. The morning after the gruelling day

:21:46. > :21:49.before. Ironmen and women ditched their diet plans and energy drinks

:21:49. > :21:56.in favour of a nice sit down and some well deserved cake. It was all

:21:56. > :22:03.in honour of the trophy ceremony today for a double UK victory.

:22:03. > :22:06.31-year-old Lucy Gossage won Ironman UK five weeks ago and yesterday she

:22:06. > :22:14.repeated that success 25 minutes ahead of her nearest rival. Gossage

:22:14. > :22:23.praised the crowds for their help during the cycle up Saundersfoot's

:22:23. > :22:27.notorious Heartbreak Hill. The support was unlike anything I have

:22:27. > :22:33.ever experienced. That gave me a little boost. It was nice overtaking

:22:33. > :22:36.the men on the hill as well. Scotland's Scott Neyedli crossed the

:22:36. > :22:40.finish line in just over nine hours. A former pro who came out of

:22:40. > :22:43.retirement for this race, he still hasn't got over his surprise. I

:22:43. > :22:59.didn't expect to actually come away with a win. But a true and my years

:22:59. > :23:03.of experience. -- I drew on my years of experience. When I saw the

:23:03. > :23:06.opportunity, I grabbed onto it and went for that. 1,500 competitors

:23:06. > :23:08.from 40 different countries made the dash from Tenby's North Beach

:23:08. > :23:15.yesterday for a 2.4-mile swim, followed by a 112-mile bike ride and

:23:16. > :23:19.then a marathon. The course is notoriously tough. There are no flat

:23:19. > :23:26.sections, just up, down and back up again. The time spent training is

:23:26. > :23:33.also tough on the athletes families. Ben Haines was out to watch his dad.

:23:33. > :23:37.He has been very good. He trains all the time. Now in it's third year,

:23:37. > :23:40.Ironman Wales is growing in popularity. 90 people from

:23:40. > :23:49.Pembrokeshire took part this year, a record number of local competitors

:23:49. > :23:53.for any Ironman event. We think Pembrokeshire, on a global scale, is

:23:53. > :24:00.at the top of the list with the number of athletes taking part. That

:24:00. > :24:03.is way up there and the athletes seem to have come from all different

:24:03. > :24:05.experiences and backgrounds. It's estimated this ultimate triathlon

:24:05. > :24:08.brings in more than £4-million to the Pembrokeshire economy. The good

:24:08. > :24:11.news is, with such strong local support, organisers say they're

:24:11. > :24:18.planning a long-term future for Tenby and the Ironman.

:24:18. > :24:22.Well we've come outside, overlooking the pitch. Derek didn't take part in

:24:22. > :24:26.Iron man this year. Next year, Derek??

:24:26. > :24:32.There's always next year. Then again I'd rather watch with an ice-cream!

:24:32. > :24:36.Anyway, some lovely sunshine in Tenby today but not dry everywhere.

:24:36. > :24:50.A few heavy showers in Powys and northeast. It does feel like autumn
