:00:00. > :00:00.That is all from BBC News At Six, I will be back with more

:00:07. > :00:10.Our top story: Frontman of the Lostprophets, the rock star Ian

:00:11. > :00:14.Watkins, admits a series of child sex offences. This investigation has

:00:15. > :00:21.uncovered the most shocking and harrowing child abuse evidence I've

:00:22. > :00:24.ever seen. There's no doubt in my mind that Ian Watkins has exploited

:00:25. > :00:25.his celebrity status in order to abuse young children Our other

:00:26. > :00:45.headlines: Our other headlines: Our hospitals

:00:46. > :00:50.should be reviewed to address our anxiety about the quality of care.

:00:51. > :00:54.That's the call from the Royal College of Surgeons.

:00:55. > :00:58.Big changes on the way for school teachers, pupils and parents.

:00:59. > :01:02.As the Scottish government outlines the case for independence I'll be

:01:03. > :01:08.working out what it could mean for Wales.

:01:09. > :01:15.Just in time. Back after that hairline fracture, Alex Cuthbert

:01:16. > :01:20.returns to face the Wallabies. And a last song. The man who starred

:01:21. > :01:21.in Morecambe and Wise, Crossroads and Coronation Street, Stan

:01:22. > :01:32.Stennett, has died. Police say it's the most shocking

:01:33. > :01:37.and harrowing child abuse they've ever seen. Today, rock singer Ian

:01:38. > :01:41.Watkins, from Pontypridd, pleaded guilty to a string of sex offences

:01:42. > :01:44.including the attempted rape of baby. The former frontman with

:01:45. > :01:46.multi-million selling band Lostprophets also admitted

:01:47. > :01:54.possessing and making child sex abuse images. The officer in charge

:01:55. > :02:08.of the investigation said the search for any other victims of the abuse

:02:09. > :02:14.would go on. Since their formation, Lostprophets

:02:15. > :02:18.from Pontypridd found success across the world. They sold three .5

:02:19. > :02:24.million albums and had a huge following regularly appearing on TV.

:02:25. > :02:37.Ian Watkins was the vibrant front man of the band. Today, a different

:02:38. > :02:44.Ian Watkins, impassive and supers -- sober suited, took centre stage at

:02:45. > :02:49.Cardiff Crown Court. The charges he had denied. The baby 's mother

:02:50. > :02:55.alongside them in the dark, also facing sexual abuse charge. Before

:02:56. > :03:02.the jury were about to be sworn in, Ian Watkins tray -- change the

:03:03. > :03:12.number of his pleas. He was guilty of attempted to rape the bees.

:03:13. > :03:19.In addition he admitted taking and possessing indecent images. Another

:03:20. > :03:24.of the victims are far too young to be able to understand what has

:03:25. > :03:30.happened to them. The defendants for their own gratification. Watkins and

:03:31. > :03:34.the mothers spend time in numerous hotels in Cardiff with a young

:03:35. > :03:39.babies. One of the infants was 19 days short of his first state when

:03:40. > :03:47.sexual images and videos were filmed. When police raided Ian

:03:48. > :03:50.Watkins's home, they found pornographic material. This

:03:51. > :03:53.investigation has uncovered the most shocking and harrowing child abuse

:03:54. > :03:58.evidence I have ever seen. There is no doubt in my mind that Ian Watkins

:03:59. > :04:05.has exploited his celebrity status in order to abuse young children.

:04:06. > :04:11.Today's outcome ensures that three people responsible have been brought

:04:12. > :04:21.to justice. She is an that this woman

:04:22. > :04:26.it is likely the offender would have targeted vulnerable adults who have

:04:27. > :04:31.access to young people and have groom them through a variety of

:04:32. > :04:41.techniques and different types of manipulation. If that person has

:04:42. > :04:45.rock star status, they are trying to flatter that person. It is likely

:04:46. > :04:48.that somebody with celebrity status will try to use that in trying to

:04:49. > :04:55.gain access to individuals and as a route into grooming behaviour. The

:04:56. > :04:59.theme of the fenders are sometime partners of Ian Watkins and sexually

:05:00. > :05:04.abuse their children at his behest. They also made their babies

:05:05. > :05:08.available for him to abuse. The sexual abuse of babies is something

:05:09. > :05:14.that is very difficult for all to comprehend. However, over the last

:05:15. > :05:23.year with an increase in online child abuse imagery we have noted

:05:24. > :05:26.along with other organisations that imagery has both increased in terms

:05:27. > :05:31.of its severity but we have seen a decline in the age of those young

:05:32. > :05:34.people. Ian Watkins is behind bars while psychological reports are

:05:35. > :05:38.being prepared on him and the two mothers. In court, he was described

:05:39. > :05:43.as a committed paedophile and police say his guilty pleas do not mark the

:05:44. > :05:50.end of the investigation. They say they will work tirelessly to in --

:05:51. > :05:54.identify the victims. The judge told the jury they had been saved from

:05:55. > :05:57.having to watch extremely graphic and distressing material. All three

:05:58. > :06:00.will be tempted -- sentenced in December.

:06:01. > :06:03.All hospitals in Wales should be reviewed to address "public anxiety"

:06:04. > :06:09.about the quality of care they provide. That's the call from the

:06:10. > :06:13.Royal College of Surgeons who want to see an improvement in how

:06:14. > :06:18.hospitals here are inspected. The Welsh Government insists it's

:06:19. > :06:22.already driving up standards. Here's our health correspondent, Owain

:06:23. > :06:27.Clarke. It has been a year when the NHS has

:06:28. > :06:31.a time struggle to cope leading to a crescendo of concerns across the

:06:32. > :06:36.country. You think you are going to be looked after and the outcome is

:06:37. > :06:44.some people are dying from lack of care. My father is 90 years old,

:06:45. > :06:49.suspected pneumonia, he has been sat in that ambulance there since half

:06:50. > :06:54.past 12. Over an hour. They are getting good money to do a

:06:55. > :07:00.professional job and they are not doing it right. I am only just 60

:07:01. > :07:04.years of age and they do actually want this operation because I want

:07:05. > :07:08.to live a lot longer. Royal College of Surgeons is worried about the big

:07:09. > :07:11.rise in the numbers of patients waiting too long for hospital

:07:12. > :07:16.treatment and about high death rates in South Wales in patients waiting

:07:17. > :07:22.for heart surgery. It has added its way to calls more should be done to

:07:23. > :07:26.make sure patients are saved. The Royal College says there is merit

:07:27. > :07:30.interviewing all hospitals to give the public urgent assurance about

:07:31. > :07:35.standards of care. Whilst stopping short of the Mandingo full-scale

:07:36. > :07:39.enquiry, it argues follicular system of inspection and external

:07:40. > :07:44.challenges and suggest dedicated hospital inspected it should be set

:07:45. > :07:48.up within health Inspectorate Wales. The boss of that organisation

:07:49. > :07:51.admitted to an Assembly committed staff shortages meant she could not

:07:52. > :07:58.give a strong assurance that the scandal similar to stuff it could

:07:59. > :08:02.not happen here. Ann Clwyd who led the review of NHS complaints across

:08:03. > :08:05.the border says the case for a wider investigation into the Welsh NHS is

:08:06. > :08:13.now stronger than ever. Long waiting lists, long waits for diagnosis in

:08:14. > :08:18.the first place compared to England, and a number of patients

:08:19. > :08:25.particularly in cardiac surgery dying on waiting lists. Don't listen

:08:26. > :08:29.to politicians, listen to these professionals. They are saying there

:08:30. > :08:32.is great cause for concern. We have seen reports that the reports which

:08:33. > :08:40.has demonstrated poor polities of care. -- quality of care. We need to

:08:41. > :08:43.understand what is going wrong. The only way we're going to get to the

:08:44. > :08:46.bottom of this is through an enquiry. The Welsh Government is

:08:47. > :08:53.adamant that sort of enquiry is not needed, stronger systems are in

:08:54. > :08:57.place, it says, to intervene. Health boards have the publish annual

:08:58. > :09:00.quality reports. It says the vast majority of patients are satisfied

:09:01. > :09:03.with the care they get even in a year that has been particularly

:09:04. > :09:07.challenging. A fire at a recycling unit in the

:09:08. > :09:10.Vale of Glamorgan is expected to burn for a few more days according

:09:11. > :09:14.to South Wales and Fire and Rescue Service. More than 80 firefighters

:09:15. > :09:17.were called to tackle the blaze which broke out on the Vale Business

:09:18. > :09:22.Park at Llandow near Cowbridge in the early hours of this morning. The

:09:23. > :09:28.cause is not yet known. It is a large scale fire, it is a building

:09:29. > :09:34.or 9000 square metres. It is a large fire to tackle. We deployed the

:09:35. > :09:38.proper resources. As a result we have managed to surround the fire

:09:39. > :09:51.ring is to a stage when it is not likely to spread any further. -- so

:09:52. > :09:55.the fire is at a stage. There's a big change on the way for

:09:56. > :09:58.school teachers, pupils and parents. The Education Minister Huw Lewis has

:09:59. > :10:01.outlined far reaching plans for schools. He was responding to a

:10:02. > :10:03.review into the structures of education. Our education

:10:04. > :10:06.correspondent, Arwyn Jones is here. That review men 85 recommendations.

:10:07. > :10:11.None are earth-shattering. Those changes are quite wide-ranging. If I

:10:12. > :10:13.turned to my whiteboard. One of the complaints made was that schools

:10:14. > :10:18.would not operate, they don't help each other. There will be many

:10:19. > :10:24.available for high performing schools to help the weaker schools.

:10:25. > :10:27.They will drive up standards. Responsibility has been taken away

:10:28. > :10:30.from councils and there will be a national model for school

:10:31. > :10:34.improvement. That is being worked out in terms of the details. One of

:10:35. > :10:39.the recommendations not adopted by the Welsh Government was schools

:10:40. > :10:45.inspections. A school will get 20 days notice of an inspection. Robert

:10:46. > :10:50.Hill says that is too much, you don't get a fairer reflection. They

:10:51. > :10:55.should have no more than two or three days. The school gets a phone

:10:56. > :10:57.call on Monday and the school inspectors will be there on the

:10:58. > :11:04.Wednesday. The Welsh Government says they will not adopt there. -- that.

:11:05. > :11:07.Another hint today that things are not looking so good for Wales when

:11:08. > :11:14.it comes to those international schools rankings which it you

:11:15. > :11:18.shortly. The league tables where pupils from 70 countries set the

:11:19. > :11:23.same examples up three years ago, the last set of results came out. We

:11:24. > :11:30.tumbled down the league tables and a lot of work has gone into improving

:11:31. > :11:33.the situation. The Education Minister was reiterating what he

:11:34. > :11:41.said before. There are other measures. I don't think it takes

:11:42. > :11:45.much to read into that. We're going to investigate this in much more

:11:46. > :11:48.detail in the coming days. Yes, starting tomorrow morning and for a

:11:49. > :11:53.week we're looking at the state of education in Wales. We have been to

:11:54. > :11:57.Finland. They do well in these league tables stop we have taken a

:11:58. > :12:02.teacher over from Wales to see what he makes of their school system.

:12:03. > :12:09.Also we are looking at what the economy and business reacts to

:12:10. > :12:13.education in Wales. The Prime Minister says the UK is

:12:14. > :12:16.still the world leader in offshore wind power, despite an energy firm

:12:17. > :12:21.shelving plans to build a wind farm in the Bristol channel. Atlantic

:12:22. > :12:27.Array would have been built about 14 miles off the south Wales coast.

:12:28. > :12:30.Developer RWE Innology say the 240 turbine scheme, which would have

:12:31. > :12:36.been double the size of any wind farm currently operating in Britain,

:12:37. > :12:40.is no longer viable. The Wales Coast Path brought in more

:12:41. > :12:43.than ?30 million to the Welsh economy and attracted nearly three

:12:44. > :12:47.million visitors over the course of a year. That's according to a new

:12:48. > :12:52.study which looked at the path's economic impact between October 2012

:12:53. > :12:56.and September 2013. The 870 mile long route, which stretches from the

:12:57. > :13:04.River Dee in Flintshire all the way to Chepstow, is the first of its

:13:05. > :13:08.kind anywhere in the world. We have had people travel from

:13:09. > :13:12.Germany and Spain and England and Scotland especially to do the

:13:13. > :13:17.coastal path. They mean to the whole path in a year that they will do a

:13:18. > :13:21.section, maybe from Port Talbot to hear and then another section later

:13:22. > :13:26.on in the year. It gives them exercise. They learn more about the

:13:27. > :13:32.environment and the wildlife around. It is a beautiful place. You have

:13:33. > :13:34.got everything to see. You have the rock formations and it is all for

:13:35. > :13:37.free. Earlier today, the Scottish

:13:38. > :13:40.Government outlined its vision for an independent Scotland. The

:13:41. > :13:44.document is a crucial part of the referendum campaign ahead of the

:13:45. > :13:48.vote in September next year. But whatever the decision, what impact

:13:49. > :13:57.could it have on us? Our political editor Nick Servini is outside the

:13:58. > :14:03.Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh. Here it is, 650 pages setting up the

:14:04. > :14:08.case for independence. A crucial day in the campaign so far. Yes campaign

:14:09. > :14:14.is behind in the polls. They will hope this will give them a boost.

:14:15. > :14:19.The critics say it is not answering all the questions. But this will

:14:20. > :14:24.form the basis for all the debates over the next ten months ahead of

:14:25. > :14:28.that referendum in September. That debate will be watched all over the

:14:29. > :14:37.world, particularly closely in Wales. It is a difficult question to

:14:38. > :14:41.try to answer. What will be potential impact be in Wales? I have

:14:42. > :14:46.been on a journey of the imagination to try to work through some of the

:14:47. > :14:55.scenarios and look at the potential impact from a yes or a no vote in

:14:56. > :14:59.the referendum. This is good morning Wales with

:15:00. > :15:04.Felicity Evans. Scotland has said yes to independence. The First

:15:05. > :15:10.Minister said it was a proud day for a proud country that was truly a

:15:11. > :15:16.nation once again. It is the morning of Friday the 19th of September 20

:15:17. > :15:19.14th and history in the making. Scotland has voted to leave the

:15:20. > :15:24.union after hundreds of years. It will have full control over

:15:25. > :15:28.taxation, the welfare state, even defence. Enormous implication for

:15:29. > :15:33.the people of Scotland but what about the rest of the UK? And here

:15:34. > :15:37.in Wales. The Welsh Government already has new powers over some

:15:38. > :15:42.taxes like stamp duty and borrowing on the way. Does this mean more will

:15:43. > :15:47.be heading in the same direction after a yes vote? To try to answer

:15:48. > :15:51.some of these questions, I have come to discuss the implications with

:15:52. > :15:55.Labour's former Welsh and Northern Irish secretary, Paul Murphy, who

:15:56. > :15:58.believes in the union and the plot can remember of the European

:15:59. > :16:06.Parliament, Jill Evans who believes in independence. -- and the Plaid

:16:07. > :16:13.Cymru member. I don't think it will be at difference in what once people

:16:14. > :16:20.think of independence. It will be a seismic change if Welsh people need

:16:21. > :16:26.independence. All evidence says Welsh people believe in devolution.

:16:27. > :16:33.That is a far cry from the business of going independent. I don't think

:16:34. > :16:38.people in Wales are going to be demanding independence because every

:16:39. > :16:41.country has a unique path to follow. It certainly will make us look at

:16:42. > :16:45.what powers we need to build our economy and create jobs and ensure

:16:46. > :16:54.that we are not sidelined within the UK.

:16:55. > :17:00.Radio Wales. This is good morning Wales. The main story this morning.

:17:01. > :17:04.Scotland has spoken and it is a note independence.

:17:05. > :17:08.A fascinating campaign but the people of Scotland have decided to

:17:09. > :17:13.stay in the United Kingdom. I wonder what all this means is Mike is it

:17:14. > :17:18.the end of nationalism that further devolution for regeneration? Or is

:17:19. > :17:22.this just the start of more powers going to Scotland and even,

:17:23. > :17:27.potentially, for Wales in the future? Despite the fact that the

:17:28. > :17:33.people of Scotland have voted no in this referendum is up Jill Evans and

:17:34. > :17:39.Paul Murphy both say even with a no vote things will still change. I

:17:40. > :17:44.would not say it would not happen for another generation because I

:17:45. > :17:52.think the debate is nonstop. Debate will carry on. But it has been

:17:53. > :17:57.defeated. That vote was defeat did. That proposal was defeated, it does

:17:58. > :18:04.not been the argument is finished. That is a feeling that devolution

:18:05. > :18:11.first is here to stay big time. Probably, in Scotland, more powers

:18:12. > :18:31.are likely to be devolved from evil Max -- evil Max -- DevoMax. There

:18:32. > :18:37.will be some kind of impact on this place and the kind of powers it has.

:18:38. > :18:41.A kind of crystal wall gazing there. One final thought to bring you up to

:18:42. > :18:45.date. A few days ago the First Minister of Wales Carwyn Jones hit

:18:46. > :18:52.the headlines in Scotland when he indicated that Wales would be to an

:18:53. > :18:56.independent Scotland if it wanted to keep the pound and stay in a

:18:57. > :18:59.currency union. That is a huge issue today during the debates that took

:19:00. > :19:04.place and it is one of the many debates that will be raging of the

:19:05. > :19:08.course of the next ten months. Much more to come before seven

:19:09. > :19:10.o'clock. He's recovered ahead of schedule after that hairline

:19:11. > :19:19.fracture. Alex Cuthbert returns to face the Wallabies.

:19:20. > :19:29.And the man who co-starred with Morecombe and Wise, the comedian and

:19:30. > :19:31.entertainer Stan Stennett, has died. Its Europe's biggest construction

:19:32. > :19:35.project and Welsh companies are being told to grab a slice of the

:19:36. > :19:39.work on offer building a rail line across the south east of England. At

:19:40. > :19:42.a cost of almost ?15 billion, Crossrail is entering its peak

:19:43. > :19:45.construction phase and its bosses have been in Cardiff to talk to

:19:46. > :19:54.firms about how they can win contracts. Here's our business

:19:55. > :19:59.correspondent, Brian Meechan. It is a rail link the stretches from

:20:00. > :20:04.Berkshire to Essex via Heathrow and Central London. This man travels the

:20:05. > :20:10.M4 every week from his home in Carmarthenshire to work on a dash on

:20:11. > :20:13.building the tunnels. I turn up on the Monday morning and turned back

:20:14. > :20:18.on a Friday evening. I stay up there all week. The tunnels are reinforced

:20:19. > :20:25.with Welsh steel. It comes from the Cardiff waste factory. 50,000 tonnes

:20:26. > :20:29.of steel have already come from here and been used in the tunnels as part

:20:30. > :20:35.of the crossrail project. The company says that is just the

:20:36. > :20:38.beginning. There are further 75 business opportunities and the

:20:39. > :20:47.equivalent of 55,000 full-time jobs available before the project is

:20:48. > :20:50.completed. The Crossrail chairman spend a day in Cardiff urging Welsh

:20:51. > :20:55.businesses to make the most of the chances Europe's weakest

:20:56. > :21:00.construction project offers them. It is up to the business to show some

:21:01. > :21:05.spirit and fight. It is there to be won. I am pleased to maximise UK

:21:06. > :21:13.contest and that means working outside the south-east. Crossrail

:21:14. > :21:19.will cost twice as much as the London Olympics. The recent

:21:20. > :21:23.parliamentary report found there had been little economic benefits for

:21:24. > :21:26.Wales from the Olympics. I think the Olympics will harsh lesson for some

:21:27. > :21:33.people. The bull assumed you could get but you have to go for things.

:21:34. > :21:38.-- people assumed. We work with companies who want to be part of the

:21:39. > :21:41.supply chain so that is our role and function. It was sad with the does

:21:42. > :21:47.have more out of the Olympics. Parts company have learned from that

:21:48. > :21:51.experience. The message from Crossrail is simple, it is open for

:21:52. > :21:53.business. It is up to Welsh companies to turn those

:21:54. > :21:57.opportunities into orders. He shared with stage with Morecambe

:21:58. > :22:00.and Wise and man of the greats in British theatre. The Welsh comedian

:22:01. > :22:04.and entertainer, Stan Stennett, has died. He was 88. He'd been a

:22:05. > :22:11.performer on stage and screen for six decades. Our arts correspondent

:22:12. > :22:14.Huw Thomas looks back at his life. A lifelong showman and entertainer,

:22:15. > :22:20.Stan Stennett shared the stage with some of the world's biggest stars.

:22:21. > :22:28.Over 60 years his variety acts brought friendly fun to theatres and

:22:29. > :22:34.television screens. He was raised by his grandmother near Bridgend. Only

:22:35. > :22:38.after the Second World War did he make it on stage where he performed

:22:39. > :22:42.with some of the world because stars. Over 60 years his variety

:23:00. > :23:03.Morecambe and Wise. And remember the first time ever saw him on stage was

:23:04. > :23:13.in 1955 and that was in the Empire in Swansea. I always remember he

:23:14. > :23:17.used to throw bits of cake into the audience and one hits me in the

:23:18. > :23:24.eye! I was eight years of age and I'd never seen a pantomime before.

:23:25. > :23:32.Right at the bottom of the ill was Morecambe and wise. They were right

:23:33. > :23:37.at the very bottom. In the early 50s I met my friends Eric and Ernie. We

:23:38. > :23:41.met in pantomime and we hit it off right away. We have something in

:23:42. > :23:50.common right from the start. There was something, there was some

:23:51. > :23:53.chemistry about it. In his long showbiz career, he also

:24:41. > :24:47.whole autumn series. But he's made a faster than expected recovery just

:24:48. > :24:56.in time to face the Wallabies. 2013 has been an incredible year for Alex

:25:39. > :25:42.centre. There is a first choice back three of George North, Alex Cuthbert

:25:43. > :25:50.and Leigh Halfpenny. For Dan Biggar in particular it is an important

:25:51. > :25:58.selection. Rhys Priestland got the nod ahead of him for South Africa. I

:25:59. > :26:06.spoke to Rhys Priestland and said it was a tight call. We are going with

:26:07. > :26:10.the fly half with the form of playing with a little bit more
