:00:00. > :00:00.Welcome to Wales Today. Our top story...
:00:07. > :00:10.Chaos at Cardiff City, fans turn out to support manager Malky Mackay,
:00:11. > :00:22.likely to be sacked by owner Vincent Tan tomorrow. We love Malky Mackay,
:00:23. > :00:26.he helped take us to where we are. We think it is wrong he has not been
:00:27. > :00:38.given a chance to finish what he started.
:00:39. > :00:43.Our other headlines tonight. After the floods, they'll be out of
:00:44. > :00:47.their homes most of next year. Rhyl continues to mop up the mess.
:00:48. > :00:55.Why was ?150,000 of taxpayers' money paid to senior policemen not to
:00:56. > :00:58.leave early? Even at Christmas, the choir is not
:00:59. > :01:03.immune to cutbacks. Choristers made redundant.
:01:04. > :01:06.And a splendid setting, if you're sitting comfortably, for Python
:01:07. > :01:14.Terry Jones to tell us a few fairy tales.
:01:15. > :01:17.Good evening. The billionaire owner of Cardiff City Football Club is
:01:18. > :01:21.flying in from Malaysia tonight for talks to decide the future of
:01:22. > :01:25.manager Malky Mackay. The Scotsman's job is in grave doubt, after Vincent
:01:26. > :01:30.Tan gave him an ultimatum to resign or be sacked. Tonight, a last-minute
:01:31. > :01:35.stay of execution after the intervention of the club's Chairman.
:01:36. > :01:44.The chaos at the club has led to protests from fans. Here's our
:01:45. > :01:48.sports reporter, Ashleigh Crowter. His job is hanging by a thread.
:01:49. > :01:52.There is now just the faintest chance that Malky Mackay will still
:01:53. > :01:56.be Cardiff manager tomorrow night. With Vincent Tan flying into the UK.
:01:57. > :02:00.The key meeting will take place in London tonight, between the
:02:01. > :02:09.Malaysian Lee Mair and Cardiff City's Chairman, manic Daman. --
:02:10. > :02:13.Mehmet Dalman. He has persuaded them to hold one more round of
:02:14. > :02:16.negotiation. Vincent Tan's relationship with Marty Mackay
:02:17. > :02:22.appears to have broken down. He sent a letter to him on Monday, resign or
:02:23. > :02:26.be sacked was the message. It is understood Vincent Tan listed a
:02:27. > :02:29.series of grievances against the Scotsman, criticising his signings,
:02:30. > :02:34.transfer budgets, socks, style of play and record as manager. Malky
:02:35. > :02:38.Mackay has said he has no intention of resigning and is carrying on as
:02:39. > :02:46.normal. But the press Conference today was anything but, with the
:02:47. > :02:50.assistant sense to face the media. I have been asked to come and do the
:02:51. > :02:54.press. The event descended into farce as journalists grew frustrated
:02:55. > :02:59.with the assistant, who was clearly under orders not to speak about
:03:00. > :03:10.Malky Mackay. We have a job to do and we need answers. Why is he still
:03:11. > :03:16.in charge? News of the no-show spread quickly. A group of fans
:03:17. > :03:21.gathered outside the club backgrounds for a show of support.
:03:22. > :03:25.Malky Mackay help take us to where we are at the moment. We are clear
:03:26. > :03:31.of relegation. It is wrong he has not been given a chance to finish
:03:32. > :03:36.what he started. It seems he is willing to lamb last multi-over the
:03:37. > :03:43.slightest failings. -- to lamb asked Mull -- to criticise Malky Mackay.
:03:44. > :03:47.Malky Mackay also has the backing of his fellow Premier League managers.
:03:48. > :03:52.I don't know what was on behind the scenes, but it has nothing to do
:03:53. > :03:58.with football. Anyone who looks at it from a football perspective will
:03:59. > :04:01.say he is doing a good job. The match tomorrow at Liverpool could be
:04:02. > :04:05.Malky Mackay's final game in charge. There is speculation that a big-name
:04:06. > :04:11.has already been lined up to replace him. To have a gun body ahead and
:04:12. > :04:14.told he had to resign, the way the courts view that is the same as if
:04:15. > :04:20.someone has been fired, so it is a dismissal, and no doubt Malky Mackay
:04:21. > :04:24.is going to sue for damages on his contract. For now, Malky Mackay
:04:25. > :04:27.remains the Cardiff manager. The question is, for how long?
:04:28. > :04:30.Our football correspondent, Rob Phillips, is heading to Liverpool to
:04:31. > :04:34.cover Cardiff's game tomorrow. I asked him for his take on what's
:04:35. > :04:40.happening. Well, tonight there is a crucial
:04:41. > :04:45.meeting between Vincent Tan and the Chairman, Mehmet Dalman, who for
:04:46. > :04:52.some weeks has been trying to work on the strained relationship between
:04:53. > :04:58.the owner and the manager, Malky Mackay. This meeting is basically
:04:59. > :05:02.the last chance of saving Malky Mackay's job, with the club. This
:05:03. > :05:08.morning, we were convinced that Malky Mackay was a dead man walking
:05:09. > :05:10.as far as the job was concerned. Subsequent league, he has travelled
:05:11. > :05:17.with discord to Liverpool this afternoon for tomorrow's game. He
:05:18. > :05:20.will be in charge, as far as we know, for that match. The meeting
:05:21. > :05:28.tonight will probably decide whether there is at least the chance for an
:05:29. > :05:32.accord between the owner and manager so it can continue until the end of
:05:33. > :05:36.the season, order will be a clean break after that. If Malky Mackay
:05:37. > :05:40.does go, what impact will that have on the club?
:05:41. > :05:45.First of all, the fans would be even more furious than they are now.
:05:46. > :05:49.If you go on social media, there is so much bad feeling about the
:05:50. > :05:53.Cardiff City have handled the last week or so, indeed, the few weeks
:05:54. > :05:58.before that, since the departure of the head of recruitment. The fans
:05:59. > :06:02.will be absolutely apoplectic, because Malky Mackay is one of the
:06:03. > :06:06.most popular managers in living memory and Cardiff City. What
:06:07. > :06:12.happens after that will depend on just who the club gets in to replace
:06:13. > :06:14.multi Mackay, if he goes. -- Malky Mackay.
:06:15. > :06:18.Bad weather is sweeping across the country again tonight. More warnings
:06:19. > :06:22.of flooding and gale force winds. For the people of Rhyl, it's just
:06:23. > :06:25.two weeks since coastal defences failed and many houses were flooded.
:06:26. > :06:31.400 were forced into temporary accommodation. -- 450. Many of them
:06:32. > :06:38.have been told they'll have to be out of their homes for six to nine
:06:39. > :06:41.months. Roger Pinney reports. Washing done, clearing out the mud
:06:42. > :06:46.and grime left by the flood, all along the streets, skips filled with
:06:47. > :06:53.bits and pieces which turned houses into homes. Armchairs, beds, doors,
:06:54. > :06:58.it all has to come out. But that is the easy part, the quick bit. Making
:06:59. > :07:02.these homes fit to live in again will take months. When the floods
:07:03. > :07:07.came two weeks ago, it came quickly. The storm surge at sea and a field
:07:08. > :07:11.defence. The priority for rescuers was getting the people to safety.
:07:12. > :07:17.Many left with little more than they were standing up in. Most are still
:07:18. > :07:25.in temporary accommodation. Milan skipped back garden, it flooded. --
:07:26. > :07:32.my landscaped back garden. I met Frida and John, their home for now
:07:33. > :07:36.is a caravan on a holiday park. They have managed to salvage a few
:07:37. > :07:40.treasured photographs and some reminders that it is Christmas. We
:07:41. > :07:46.are lucky we got out with our lives, really. Two men had to carry me out
:07:47. > :07:55.because I am on crunchers. -- crutches. And they say some people
:07:56. > :07:58.will try to cash in on the misery. A couple of people came up and said
:07:59. > :08:07.they were looking for addresses, could you give us such and such
:08:08. > :08:10.address? Here is my card. To me, they are cowboy builders. We heard
:08:11. > :08:13.similar stories from other flood victims, printing warnings and
:08:14. > :08:18.advice from Trading Standards officers and the local MP. The
:08:19. > :08:23.closest to the sea, the home of Chas and Linda was the first to fly. They
:08:24. > :08:26.are currently in a hotel but plan to go to friends for Christmas. They
:08:27. > :08:34.say they have had problems with their insurers. There have been
:08:35. > :08:39.faxes and e-mails, but all we want to do is get things moving. It is
:08:40. > :08:43.hard for them, there is a lot of work to do, but the communication
:08:44. > :08:47.aspect of it, the frustration, you would think someone would have some
:08:48. > :08:54.kind of thought for the people in our situation. What was the general
:08:55. > :08:59.advice for dealing with this? Do not do things on the cheap, ask them for
:09:00. > :09:03.their credentials, ask what they are proposing in writing, and seek
:09:04. > :09:07.advice. There are other concerns, stormy holiday is predicted. Work is
:09:08. > :09:11.underway to prepare the sea wall in time. This is a Christmas that
:09:12. > :09:14.people of these streets will want to forget all stop it will not be easy.
:09:15. > :09:18.A dentist who falsely claimed almost ?48,000 for work on NHS patients has
:09:19. > :09:21.been jailed for 18 months. Jochemus Hermanus Venter, who practised in
:09:22. > :09:27.Llandrindod Wells, made more than 200 overpriced claims for treatment.
:09:28. > :09:30.The court heard the South African-born dentist charged for 300
:09:31. > :09:36.crowns, when all he did was fillings, and he claimed for
:09:37. > :09:40.nonexistent appointments. Up to 300 people who work for Powys
:09:41. > :09:44.Council are likely to lose their jobs as part of a plan to make up a
:09:45. > :09:48.?40 million shortfall. The Council Leader says they will no longer be
:09:49. > :09:54.able to provide some services and council tax could be increased in
:09:55. > :09:57.order to make up the deficit. Cardiff Airport has found an airline
:09:58. > :10:01.to take over their Glasgow and Paris routes, which were cancelled by
:10:02. > :10:05.Flybe earlier this month. CityJet will start operating the services
:10:06. > :10:12.from the 20th January, and will run flights to Edinburgh and Jersey from
:10:13. > :10:15.the end of March. Dyfed Powys's Police and Crime
:10:16. > :10:18.Commissioner is trying to claw back thousands of pounds paid out to
:10:19. > :10:22.senior staff for staying in their jobs. Christopher Salmon says
:10:23. > :10:31.?150,000 was awarded to chief officers in "retention bonuses"
:10:32. > :10:34.between 2009 and 2012. Wales Today has discovered that no other police
:10:35. > :10:39.force in Wales awarded this type of incentive. Lawyers acting for those
:10:40. > :10:47.involved say all the payments were made in good faith. Abigail Neal
:10:48. > :10:51.reports. The public sector pay freeze covers
:10:52. > :10:57.police officers, as well, but it turns out life at the top has been a
:10:58. > :11:00.little less frosty. I therefore give notice that Christopher Salmon is
:11:01. > :11:06.duly elected as the lease and crime Commissioner. -- Police and Crime
:11:07. > :11:10.Commissioner. When the commissioners were elected last year, the job was
:11:11. > :11:14.to hold the police to account. It turns out the man in charge of
:11:15. > :11:19.Dafydd Powys is none too happy about what some senior staff were being
:11:20. > :11:23.paid. Salaries of officers are set in law but there are certain extras
:11:24. > :11:27.that can be added to attract top officers to the force. This includes
:11:28. > :11:32.money to relocate here, packages for private health insurance. Even
:11:33. > :11:38.payments known as retention bonuses, just to stay in your job for that
:11:39. > :11:42.year. This force is the only one in Wales which offered these bonuses.
:11:43. > :11:47.Since 2009, the Chief Constable Ian Arrow deal and temporary Chief
:11:48. > :11:53.Constable Jackie Roberts along with three other officers were all paid
:11:54. > :11:57.10,000 as a year just to agree not to leave. On top of that, there is
:11:58. > :12:02.also money for private health insurance. In total, it comes to
:12:03. > :12:08.100s ?80,000 over three years, in addition to their salaries. --
:12:09. > :12:13.?160,000. Christopher Salmon says he has scrapped the perks wants to go
:12:14. > :12:17.further all stop the payments made to Chief officers, which on legal
:12:18. > :12:20.advice, appear not to have been lawful. There is no suggestion that
:12:21. > :12:25.anyone has made or received these payments in bad faith, but as a
:12:26. > :12:29.Police and Crime Commissioner, I have a duty to the public and to the
:12:30. > :12:33.taxpayers, to be a guardian of public money, and we are taking
:12:34. > :12:39.legal advice on seeking to recover that. I spoke to the former Chief
:12:40. > :12:43.Constable, who moved from West made the out when he got the job. He told
:12:44. > :12:48.with the police was one of the lowest paid forces in the UK, with
:12:49. > :12:51.the top salary of ?130,000, and without these extra incentives, it
:12:52. > :12:55.would be hard for the police authority to attract people to the
:12:56. > :12:59.job. But one local MP does not buy that. After learning the three other
:13:00. > :13:05.police forces in Wales did not pay the same of all works. We should be
:13:06. > :13:11.looking at the average wage in areas in West Wales, the average wages are
:13:12. > :13:14.around ?20,000. I do not buy this argument that they have to pay
:13:15. > :13:17.public officials on our part of Wales far more than the rest in
:13:18. > :13:21.order to attract the best talent. The police face a massive budget
:13:22. > :13:27.squeeze and the current Chief Constable has taken a ?10,000 a cut.
:13:28. > :13:31.The message from the top is that there want to be seen to be sharing
:13:32. > :13:34.the pain with those on the ground. Much more to come before seven
:13:35. > :13:38.o'clock. The show must go on, but tonight's
:13:39. > :13:44.big rugby derby is overshadowed by the stand-off between the Welsh
:13:45. > :13:47.Rugby Union and the regions. And that's the tree sorted, but can
:13:48. > :13:52.you have a Christmas completely made in Wales?
:13:53. > :13:55.With five days to Christmas, the Church in Wales has issued all adult
:13:56. > :14:03.choristers at Llandaff Cathedral in Cardiff with redundancy notices. It
:14:04. > :14:06.means the choir has lost its permanent professional altos, tenors
:14:07. > :14:11.and basses, and it's feared it could be left with only boy trebles to
:14:12. > :14:14.sing this Christmas. The cathedral is in financial difficulties, saying
:14:15. > :14:24.it can only afford to pay choristers on an occasional basis. Caroline
:14:25. > :14:28.Evans reports. Their voices are, they say, the
:14:29. > :14:31.backbone of the choir. Between them, the seven men sing three of the four
:14:32. > :14:36.musical parts, leaving the boys to sing the top notes. -- the six men.
:14:37. > :14:40.Without them, they say the choir will simply be unable to do what it
:14:41. > :14:43.has done until now, and musical tradition built up over more than
:14:44. > :14:53.130 years, and the church itself, will suffer. It is incredibly
:14:54. > :14:57.short-sighted of the people who have made the decision, to dismiss
:14:58. > :15:02.acquire which they should know very well is the heart and soul of the
:15:03. > :15:06.liturgical process. It is a grave mistake that they are not saving
:15:07. > :15:10.money, they are going to lose money. When back The men sing five services
:15:11. > :15:14.a week, plus festival days, for which they are paid a few thousand
:15:15. > :15:16.pounds each a year. But the Church says the cathedral's music costs
:15:17. > :15:20.more than maintenance and energy costs put together, and the choir
:15:21. > :15:27.sings fewer than 35% of all services. The decision comes against
:15:28. > :15:35.a background of financial problems. The cathedral is facing a deficit of
:15:36. > :15:39.?81,000 for 2014. Making these posts redundant will remove more than half
:15:40. > :15:42.of the problem. But the union representing the musicians says
:15:43. > :15:45.attempts to find the money in other ways have just not received support
:15:46. > :15:54.from those in charge of the cathedral. We kept on saying to them
:15:55. > :15:57.that there were alternatives to redundancy, much more positive
:15:58. > :16:03.responses to the financial difficulties they have, like a
:16:04. > :16:09.fundraising campaign, but unfortunately, they did not seem
:16:10. > :16:13.willing to engage with this. The Church in Wales says all the adult
:16:14. > :16:16.singers who lost their jobs could still have the opportunity to sing
:16:17. > :16:19.at the cathedral on a paid basis under the revised structure. And
:16:20. > :16:23.those involved say they have been given the right to appeal, but
:16:24. > :16:26.they're not sure if they will. This was the cathedral choir filmed in
:16:27. > :16:29.october, for the BBC's Songs of Praise programme. Tomorrow evening
:16:30. > :16:38.at 7pm, they will sing together for the last time.
:16:39. > :16:41.The rest of the sport now. And life's a little calmer at Swansea
:16:42. > :16:44.than at their rivals in Cardiff. Yes, Swansea boss Michael Laudrup
:16:45. > :16:48.has said there won't be managerial changes at the Liberty Stadium. He's
:16:49. > :16:52.has ruled himself out of the running to take over at Tottenham. The Dane
:16:53. > :16:55.had been among the names linked with the vacancy at White Hart Lane.
:16:56. > :17:04.Laudrup said he has no intention of leaving Swansea in the middle of the
:17:05. > :17:07.season. I think it is always positive and flattering when others
:17:08. > :17:17.are talking about you and your name is linked with other clubs. In this
:17:18. > :17:21.case, Tottenham is a big club. But on the downside, you have to answer
:17:22. > :17:27.all these questions, I think you have said already the other night, I
:17:28. > :17:29.would never leave the club, not Swansea, not anyone, in the middle
:17:30. > :17:32.of the season. Let's turn to rugby, where I'm
:17:33. > :17:35.afraid festive cheer is also in short supply. Tonight's big rugby
:17:36. > :17:38.derby between the Blues and the Ospreys is being overshadowed by the
:17:39. > :17:41.political stand-off between the Welsh Rugby Union and the regions.
:17:42. > :17:45.Supporters' groups are expected to protest at the Arms Park tonight.
:17:46. > :17:48.They've accused the WRU of a lack of empathy for fans after a meeting
:17:49. > :17:51.this week. Former Wales and Blues flanker Martyn Williams is part of
:17:52. > :17:57.the Scrum V team at the game tonight. Good evening. Sorry about
:17:58. > :18:03.this, we will have to start with the politics first. We have a number of
:18:04. > :18:07.top players involved. Six of them are being offered central contracts
:18:08. > :18:15.with the Welsh Rugby Union, will that be enough to stop them leaving
:18:16. > :18:18.Wales? Yes, I think it could do. If the rumour is true they will be
:18:19. > :18:22.offered a separate contract, hopefully, fingers crossed, it will
:18:23. > :18:30.be enough to keep them in Wales. We have already lost too many players
:18:31. > :18:38.come -- players, in my opinion. Oddly, we can keep hold of the likes
:18:39. > :18:42.of Sam Morgan. We can only hope that some seasonal goodwill breaks out.
:18:43. > :18:46.The match tonight, both clubs, the ospreys and the Blues, have good
:18:47. > :18:52.wins in Europe last weekend, how do you see the match tonight going? It
:18:53. > :18:58.is a tight one. Both teams are confident. The Blues had a double
:18:59. > :19:07.win against Glasgow. A few injuries but a few stars back as well. It
:19:08. > :19:12.should be good, so far, the weather is holding out. We are expecting a
:19:13. > :19:15.good game. I think the Blues will just take it home. Enjoy the game,
:19:16. > :19:18.thanks very much indeed for joining us.
:19:19. > :19:21.And you'll be able to hear more from Martyn Williams, he's part of the
:19:22. > :19:24.Scrum V Live team tonight, starting over on BBC Two Wales after this
:19:25. > :19:29.programme. There's commentary, too, on BBC Radio Wales, Radio Cymru and
:19:30. > :19:32.updates online. We'll bring you the result from the rugby and any
:19:33. > :19:37.developments from Cardiff City in our programme at 10:25pm tonight.
:19:38. > :19:40.The Monty Python star Terry Jones was in Cardiff last night to watch
:19:41. > :19:44.the first stage adaptation of his fairy tales. Silly Kings is being
:19:45. > :19:47.performed by National Theatre Wales in the grounds of Cardiff Castle.
:19:48. > :20:02.Our arts correspondent Huw Thomas reports.
:20:03. > :20:11.It has got Silly Kings, Princess and a strong hint of Python. The show
:20:12. > :20:14.places Terry Jones' children's stories on stage. He wanted a jolly
:20:15. > :20:19.alternative to some of the darker themes he found in traditional fairy
:20:20. > :20:27.tales. At the end of Snow White, the wicked stepmother is made to put on
:20:28. > :20:35.hot Iron slippers and dances until she falls down dead! I didn't want
:20:36. > :20:38.my five-year-old going to sleep thinking, I am so glad they tortured
:20:39. > :20:43.that old woman to death! Or the cast, I chanced in bass some quirky
