:00:00. > :00:09.Welcome to Wales Today, our top story: People who live on Aberyswyth

:00:10. > :00:14.seafront are told to leave their homes. Sea defences are simply

:00:15. > :00:17.smashed as the storm surge. Elderly people rescued from their

:00:18. > :00:23.ruined homes taking nothing with them but the clothes they're

:00:24. > :00:26.wearing. The great storm washes away railway

:00:27. > :00:44.lines bringing travel disruption to thousands of passengers.

:00:45. > :00:49.Tonight's other headlines: Last seen taking out the rubbish. Police step

:00:50. > :00:52.up their search for teenager Nida Ul-Naseer. Now her sister appeals

:00:53. > :00:57.for help. We just want to tell her that she is

:00:58. > :01:02.not in trouble. We all love her. We all love you, Nida. Just come home.

:01:03. > :01:06.Margaret Thatcher's secret meeting with the miners' wives. Declassified

:01:07. > :01:10.files tell the inside story of the strike.

:01:11. > :01:14.Good evening. In tonight's sport, on the eve of his first game in charge,

:01:15. > :01:27.the new man at Cardiff City enjoys a kick about with his players.

:01:28. > :01:29.Good evening. Wales is still on weather watch tonight after high

:01:30. > :01:34.tides and strong winds caused disruption across the country. Homes

:01:35. > :01:37.flooded, trains cancelled, roads closed and sea defences ruined, all

:01:38. > :01:44.this as high tides brought havoc along the coast. Tonight, people

:01:45. > :01:50.living along the seafront in Aberystwyth and the Which? Are

:01:51. > :01:54.advised to leave their homes. Our reporter Abigail Neal is in Cardigan

:01:55. > :01:59.where houses had to be evacuated earlier today.

:02:00. > :02:03.I am standing alongside the river here and you may be able to see in

:02:04. > :02:09.the background the water is just creeping up. We had two hours away

:02:10. > :02:13.from high tide and people are very nervously waiting here. You can see

:02:14. > :02:18.some precautionary sandbags they have put in place. They weren't

:02:19. > :02:23.enough this morning when the highly tide hit just after 9am. The water

:02:24. > :02:30.gushed along this street. You can see people up ahead clearing out and

:02:31. > :02:35.assessing the damage. It reached the Pope in the background, flooding 30

:02:36. > :02:42.homes. You can see, the floodgates people have put in place. They are

:02:43. > :02:48.keeping them there because they know the worst is not over. We are being

:02:49. > :02:53.told tonight that the area of most concern is Aberystwyth and Borth.

:02:54. > :03:00.People should be evacuated. High tide is expected around 9:20pm and

:03:01. > :03:09.they are warning that high winds brings substantial risk of more

:03:10. > :03:13.flooding. Dramatic, damaging and destructive.

:03:14. > :03:20.The powerful tidal storm in a blistering brought misery to many.

:03:21. > :03:25.Several hotels were flooded. Neighbours were standing behind the

:03:26. > :03:31.plate glass window and it's just caved in. Nobody was injured. It

:03:32. > :03:37.went straight through the building and at the back. We are expecting it

:03:38. > :03:41.again tonight but this time around there is wind. This morning, there

:03:42. > :03:45.wasn't. This wind will cause a lot of damage and fortunately. In

:03:46. > :03:52.Carmarthenshire, this castle was surrounded by a giant moat. At a

:03:53. > :03:55.high tide the STV water normally reaches that skip. Today it

:03:56. > :04:05.overturned it and continued through the village. This is about the worst

:04:06. > :04:08.we have seen for years. You are very lucky the rain water did not come

:04:09. > :04:15.down the road as well. It meets and makes a huge mess. This time, it is

:04:16. > :04:19.just the Tidewater. Just after 7am, the first high tide hit the south

:04:20. > :04:27.west. Desperate attempts to protect property here failed as the flood

:04:28. > :04:30.defences broke within minutes. This hotel owner says he did not have

:04:31. > :04:37.enough floodgates to keep the water out. We put the floodgates up that

:04:38. > :04:41.we were supplied with. We sandbagged this area because a new it was going

:04:42. > :04:45.to flood. As you can see, we can't stop it. Further north in Barmouth

:04:46. > :04:51.where severe flood warning was issued, an injured man was rescued

:04:52. > :04:57.by boat. All morning people had been clearing and assessing the damage.

:04:58. > :05:02.In Gwynedd, the RNLI saved for people from a flooded farmhouse. Two

:05:03. > :05:08.more had to be evacuated in Kennedy gym. The river burst its banks

:05:09. > :05:13.flooding 30 homes in Cardigan. The floodgates will hold for quite some

:05:14. > :05:17.time to stop they have done a lot of good in if you properties. They have

:05:18. > :05:21.reduced the amount of water going into a property. I don't think in

:05:22. > :05:25.these circumstances anything will be one and percent effective. Even

:05:26. > :05:33.though the floodgates have held, the water has found other ways into the

:05:34. > :05:37.property such as through vents. This river in Carmarthen was similarly

:05:38. > :05:41.high. No football matches here today as police cordoned off roads to stop

:05:42. > :05:46.people getting too close. Prepared sea defences just about managed to

:05:47. > :05:50.hold back the sea after they were breached last month. But in

:05:51. > :05:55.Pembrokeshire, the wall and part of the road gave way under the force of

:05:56. > :06:00.the waves. It is a warning tonight of more high tides to come. We may

:06:01. > :06:06.not have weathered the storm just yet.

:06:07. > :06:09.Let me show you again be seen from Cardigan here tonight. You can see

:06:10. > :06:13.all the flood defences still in place. People are starting to mill

:06:14. > :06:17.around, looking at that river nervously to see what is coming. We

:06:18. > :06:20.are being told that Ceredigion Council warning their biggest areas

:06:21. > :06:26.of concern are Aberystwyth and Borth. They are expecting six foot

:06:27. > :06:29.waves above sea level termite at high tide. We're going to hear more

:06:30. > :06:33.from there now. Flooding has also caused chaos for

:06:34. > :06:36.rail services across Wales. Many services were cancelled this morning

:06:37. > :06:47.and passengers forced to take buses with huge delays.

:06:48. > :06:51.A railway line close to the sea. Part of the track washed away today

:06:52. > :06:57.showing how devastating weather like this can be. The rain in Gwynedd was

:06:58. > :07:01.stuck after being caught up in the storm. At Cardiff Central passages

:07:02. > :07:09.were looking for a way home after many lame -- mainline routes were

:07:10. > :07:12.cancelled this morning. The London Paddington rain is delayed because

:07:13. > :07:19.of flights between Newport and Cardiff. We have been delayed a lot,

:07:20. > :07:30.two hours now because the line is off. I started at half past eight

:07:31. > :07:33.for Manchester, I think we have got two more bus journeys to go.

:07:34. > :07:36.Services from Newport to Carmarthen were badly affected and replacement

:07:37. > :07:39.buses were put in place. The disruption didn't stop there.

:07:40. > :07:47.The Holyhead to Chester lines were also down. As well as Machynlleth to

:07:48. > :07:51.Pwllheli. We apologise to passengers for the disruption today. Without

:07:52. > :07:56.these signalling the trains can't go anywhere. The engineers are out

:07:57. > :08:00.working hard to try to rectify the problem. Trains are back up and

:08:01. > :08:03.running in Cardiff Central but station managers tell the deep

:08:04. > :08:09.deception could continue into the weekend as the bad weather is

:08:10. > :08:11.expected to continue. The advice to passengers is to check before you

:08:12. > :08:14.travel to avoid delays. But delays were unavoidable today

:08:15. > :08:17.even when services were back on track, they were very limited. After

:08:18. > :08:22.a day of travel chaos, passengers hope the situation will improve.

:08:23. > :08:28.So high tides and strong winds causing this flooding. It's the next

:08:29. > :08:31.high tide that we now need to watch. So tonight high tide in Conwy is 19

:08:32. > :08:34.minutes past midnight and 12.36pm tomorrow afternoon. In Aberystwyth,

:08:35. > :08:37.9.17pm this evening and 9.40am in the morning. And Milford Haven,

:08:38. > :08:42.7.45pm tonight and 8.07am tomorrow morning.

:08:43. > :08:54.The family of a teenager, missing from her

:08:55. > :08:59.the family of a teenager missing from her Newport home has made an

:09:00. > :09:01.emotional appeal for her to come home. 18-year-old Nida Ul-Naseer

:09:02. > :09:05.hasn't been seen since last Saturday. Her sister Naila Anwar

:09:06. > :09:09.said, they missed her desperately and stressed she was not in any

:09:10. > :09:12.trouble. Gwent Police say there had been an argument at home, which

:09:13. > :09:15.could have upset her. Nick Palit reports.

:09:16. > :09:18.Accompanied by the Assistant Chief Constable of Gwent, Nida's sister,

:09:19. > :09:24.Naila, made an appeal on behalf of the family for her to come home. The

:09:25. > :09:30.18-year-old hasn't been seen since last Saturday night and the family

:09:31. > :09:42.are desperately worried. We all love you. Just come home. We want to tell

:09:43. > :09:46.you, if anyone knows about her, tell the police. We are very worried

:09:47. > :09:52.about, we are all worried about her condition. The most willing thing is

:09:53. > :09:56.she has missed mums birthday which is not like her. Wearing blue jeans

:09:57. > :10:00.and a black top she was last seen as she put the bins out. She had

:10:01. > :10:03.neither her purse nor mobile phone with her. On the front door of the

:10:04. > :10:09.family home there's a simple message they hope Nida will see.

:10:10. > :10:13.We believe she may have had a verbal disagreement within the helm. It

:10:14. > :10:18.could have upset her. It could have led to two leaving. Whilst we are of

:10:19. > :10:22.course the doing in about lines of enquiry that is no information at

:10:23. > :10:26.this stage to suggest she was picked up in a vehicle at all. Tomorrow

:10:27. > :10:31.it'll be week since she went missing here. Despite extensive searches and

:10:32. > :10:36.house-to-house enquiries please have drawn a blank. They say they are

:10:37. > :10:39.concerned especially as she does not have her medication for anaemia

:10:40. > :10:42.which she needs. They say anyone with any information should contact

:10:43. > :10:44.them. Newly-released government papers

:10:45. > :10:47.reveal how the prime minister Margaret Thatcher secretly met the

:10:48. > :10:54.wives of working miners during the strike of 1984 to 1985. The meeting,

:10:55. > :10:59.in Downing Street, was held at the request of the wife of a south Wales

:11:00. > :11:10.miner who had defied the strike. Here's our parliamentary

:11:11. > :11:14.correspondent, David Cornock. We will fight and die in the attempt.

:11:15. > :11:19.It is a dispute that divided Britain. A defining moment for trade

:11:20. > :11:24.unions and the government. 21,000 minus walkabout in South Wales in a

:11:25. > :11:28.strike. It was then a nationalised industry. Documents from the Prime

:11:29. > :11:33.Minister 's files released today gives an insight into the government

:11:34. > :11:37.'s thinking as a talk on the miners. Buried in the Prime Minister 's

:11:38. > :11:42.papers, we find propaganda sheets from the South Wales NUM. You don't

:11:43. > :11:48.need me to imagine Margaret Thatcher 's reaction when she read the

:11:49. > :11:53.headline, strike breaker is a traitor above a photograph of a

:11:54. > :11:56.police officer described as black flags. The papers reveal how

:11:57. > :12:01.Margaret Thatcher held at private meeting with the wives of working

:12:02. > :12:06.miners after receiving a letter from one whose husband defied the

:12:07. > :12:12.strike. In a draft statement about the meeting, it was never issued,

:12:13. > :12:20.Margaret Thatcher changed the word sympathy to understanding. She felt

:12:21. > :12:30.she had a magic touch. Shoot would have wanted to meet them and

:12:31. > :12:39.believed their determination would have been galvanised a tried to

:12:40. > :12:42.persuade otherwise. A ministerial committee on Cole met regularly to

:12:43. > :12:47.plan the government strategy but the Welsh Secretary's request to join it

:12:48. > :12:51.was refused. He says his priority was to bring new industries to Wales

:12:52. > :13:00.rather than focus on one in inevitable decline. It was agony for

:13:01. > :13:08.the people involved. But in terms of impact on Welsh economy and Wales in

:13:09. > :13:12.general, it has been exaggerated. The government maintained it had

:13:13. > :13:18.enough coal stockpile to win the strike. Privately, it is less

:13:19. > :13:21.confident. At one point we see the government is discussing procedures

:13:22. > :13:26.for calling a state of emergency and that really shows us they were

:13:27. > :13:32.talking about taking things to another level to try to ensure power

:13:33. > :13:37.stations remained operational. But the government held its nerve and in

:13:38. > :13:43.March 1985 the strike ended in defeat for the miners. Pit closures

:13:44. > :13:52.followed a mother last deep mine in Wales closing six years ago. Back

:13:53. > :13:55.now to our top story. People living on the seafront in Aberystwyth and

:13:56. > :14:00.Borth are being advised to leave their homes or stop our reporter is

:14:01. > :14:06.in Aberystwyth for rest. What is the latest on the evacuation?

:14:07. > :14:10.Residents are being advised to leave their homes and this evening I have

:14:11. > :14:16.seen quite a few residents walking along this old Victorian promenade

:14:17. > :14:20.carrying luggage. They are heeding advice and spending the night at a

:14:21. > :14:25.school. But there are quite a lot of students living here. They are not

:14:26. > :14:34.as tempted to go and find safety in the school. Some are tempted to stay

:14:35. > :14:38.and watch. It is a dangerous ones. We added affecting high tide to hit

:14:39. > :14:43.at nine o'clock tonight. How much were are we expecting things to

:14:44. > :14:52.get? We have seen pictures about the damage to those sea defences.

:14:53. > :14:55.Earlier the high tide hit around nine o'clock this morning and some

:14:56. > :14:59.of those pictures are terrible. Just further up the seafront is part of

:15:00. > :15:02.this railing, about six metres of it, has been ripped away from the

:15:03. > :15:08.promenade and it is lying on the ground. The road is littered with

:15:09. > :15:12.debris. If anything -- if it is anything like it was this morning,

:15:13. > :15:14.he waves could be high. I was speaking to a professional

:15:15. > :15:21.photographer earlier and some of the ways reached as high as the 5-storey

:15:22. > :15:25.buildings. There is a severe flood warning here and that means there is

:15:26. > :15:33.a danger to life. It could be very serious. Thank you very much. We

:15:34. > :15:37.will have more on this after our News at ten.

:15:38. > :15:38.It's been a landmark week for immigration. Romanians and

:15:39. > :15:42.Bulgarians have gained unrestricted rights to work across the European

:15:43. > :15:45.Union. Last night we looked at how our schools and hospitals have been

:15:46. > :15:48.shaped by a changing population. Tonight our reporter Charlotte

:15:49. > :15:54.Dubenskij has been to Llanelli where a large number of Polish immigrants

:15:55. > :16:01.came to live searching for work. This woman was born in Poland. She

:16:02. > :16:05.has called Langley her home for the last five years. She is one of

:16:06. > :16:12.thousands of migrants from Poland who came to the UK to find a better

:16:13. > :16:17.life. I finished school in Poland and then my father invited me to

:16:18. > :16:20.come to the UK to work for their holiday break. When I came I was

:16:21. > :16:25.working and then I thought, I'm going to stay. It was a better life.

:16:26. > :16:34.Though the influx hasn't always been this move process. There has only

:16:35. > :16:37.been one negative in all the time we have had Polish people coming here

:16:38. > :16:47.and that is streets drinking by single males. Not family people.

:16:48. > :16:50.Just single males. In 2001 there were 62 people living in

:16:51. > :16:57.Carmarthenshire born in Poland. In 2011 that increased to more than

:16:58. > :17:00.2000. A jump of over 3000%. There have been concerns over people

:17:01. > :17:06.migrating here to claim benefits. But the figures for Carmarthenshire

:17:07. > :17:11.don't seem to act that up. In May 2004, there were around 22,000

:17:12. > :17:17.benefit claimants in the county, nine News later that fell to just

:17:18. > :17:26.over 19,000. -- nine years later. This weekend the borders open for

:17:27. > :17:30.people from Romania and Bulgaria. No little bit of language to

:17:31. > :17:36.communicate, what you want to do. This is the most important thing

:17:37. > :17:41.when you come. That is it. To be honest, to know where you are going

:17:42. > :17:44.and to who you are going. She works in the Polish Welsh centre in

:17:45. > :17:50.Llanelli where she helps other polls find work or stop concerns were

:17:51. > :17:53.raised that Polish people could take jobs from locals but a decade later

:17:54. > :17:58.many say the influx has been positive. The amount of money that

:17:59. > :18:01.has been earned by Polish people are brought into the community has been

:18:02. > :18:13.quite considerable. They have bought in the shops. But workers have

:18:14. > :18:16.offered Wales many opportunities. The fate of this talent is just as

:18:17. > :18:22.important to her as someone who was born here. Tonight's top sport

:18:23. > :18:26.stories now, here's Claire. Good evening. Cardiff City's new

:18:27. > :18:31.manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was straight into work today as prepares

:18:32. > :18:35.for his first game in charge. It's all about the FA Cup this weekend.

:18:36. > :18:38.The Bluebirds are away to Newcastle tomorrow in the third round, while

:18:39. > :18:45.Swansea City travel to Manchester United on Sunday.

:18:46. > :18:48.Getting to know his players. Cardiff City's new man looked at ease this

:18:49. > :18:53.morning as he enjoyed the kickabout tooling his first training session.

:18:54. > :18:57.His first test is a trip to Newcastle tomorrow in the FA Cup.

:18:58. > :19:00.Having observed the team play from the sidelines, he is keen to

:19:01. > :19:05.implement his philosophy on them as soon as possible. Every time you

:19:06. > :19:11.train, every time you go out onto the page, no matter if it is a

:19:12. > :19:16.training session, league cup, the FA Cup or the Premier League, you put

:19:17. > :19:20.pressure on yourself or stop that pride tells you to go out and do

:19:21. > :19:25.your best. That is what we have to do. For the players it is time to

:19:26. > :19:31.concentrate on a new chapter and impress the new boss. It is a new

:19:32. > :19:35.quest for all of us. A young manager, wanting to achieve things.

:19:36. > :19:42.He has got belief in himself, the way he plays for all. The way he was

:19:43. > :19:48.brought up. He knows a lot about the game, obviously. It is a really

:19:49. > :19:51.exciting time. Kansas City travel to Manchester United hoping to bounce

:19:52. > :19:55.back from a slump in form. Michael Laudrup has admitted he would like

:19:56. > :20:01.to add players during the transfer window after a mounting injury

:20:02. > :20:05.list. Hernandez the latest casualty. Despite more wet weather forecast

:20:06. > :20:08.over the weekend, Newport County's game against Northampton is set to

:20:09. > :20:12.go ahead. Their last two matches have been postponed at Rodney Parade

:20:13. > :20:17.but as things stand the page is playable. Wrexham, who are 15th in

:20:18. > :20:20.the table, and at home. A welcome Aldershot.

:20:21. > :20:23.As things settle down at Cardiff City, there's still no sign of any

:20:24. > :20:26.resolution in Welsh rugby. The four regions are waiting to see the

:20:27. > :20:30.latest proposals from the Welsh Rugby Union after they confirmed

:20:31. > :20:33.plans to offer a new agreement for the future of the game here.

:20:34. > :20:36.Tonight, the Ospreys welcome the Scarlets to the Liberty Stadium,

:20:37. > :20:42.eight days after beating them in the Boxing Day derby. A little earlier I

:20:43. > :20:46.spoke to former Wales captain Gwyn Jones and asked with the Scarlets

:20:47. > :20:51.out for revenge, what kind of battle he was expecting?

:20:52. > :20:54.It is a Welsh derby over the Christmas period so it is going to

:20:55. > :20:58.be a battle of the two forward packs a stock we can moan about the

:20:59. > :21:02.weather but it is always this when the two teams meet. From that point

:21:03. > :21:05.of view the Scarlets have improved considerably especially in the set

:21:06. > :21:11.piece so they will be a tougher opposition. Whereas the ospreys have

:21:12. > :21:17.swatted Welsh packs aside, we're not quite as dominant as they used to

:21:18. > :21:22.be. I think their parties too strong and Dan Biggar will be controlling

:21:23. > :21:24.the show. Given the uncertainty of where things will start next

:21:25. > :21:31.season, these derbies have extra pressure. They want to finish as

:21:32. > :21:37.high up on the table as possible. We have no idea how Europe will pan out

:21:38. > :21:41.over the coming months. Teams were 1-2 finish in the top six. Bite
