:00:15. > :00:27.Welcome to Wales Today. Tonight's headlines: Hit by debt.
:00:28. > :00:31.Mandy Dumagnee owes thousands and is going bankrupt. A charity warns of
:00:32. > :00:34.the huge increase in people here turning to them for help. So what's
:00:35. > :00:45.the true cost of living? Politicians debate whether we are better off.
:00:46. > :00:54.Also tonight: Growing opposition to plans for pylons. People on Anglesey
:00:55. > :00:59.call on the National Grid not to build them across the island. At the

:01:26. > :01:36.daredevil cyclist challenge on two wheels.
:01:37. > :01:39.Good evening. There's a warning tonight that more and more people
:01:40. > :01:43.are looking for help with debt and are unable to afford the basics in
:01:44. > :01:46.life. The Charity Stepchange has compiled a Wales-wide report and
:01:47. > :01:49.they've been backed up by Trades Unions saying many families have
:01:50. > :01:52.been pushed into financial misery. It comes as politicians across the
:01:53. > :01:55.board debate whether households are better off. The UK Government says
:01:56. > :02:03.wages are rising. Our economics correspondent, Sarah Dickins, has
:02:04. > :02:08.more. How much many we have to spend,
:02:09. > :02:13.whether we have becoming better off is the question on everyone's lips.
:02:14. > :02:17.The economy is growing but does that translate into more cash in our
:02:18. > :02:27.pockets or are our personal debts growing? Mandy Dumagnee G had two
:02:28. > :02:31.children and had a breakdown. She is now working as a support worker. But
:02:32. > :02:36.that she ends ?15,000 a year, half of what she learned five years ago.
:02:37. > :02:43.She has been struggling with money and was ?46,000 in debt. She has
:02:44. > :02:47.paid back more than ?20,000 but still owes ?26,000 and is filing for
:02:48. > :02:52.bankruptcy. A lot of families don't have enough money coming in to meet
:02:53. > :02:57.the bills. Our electricity and gas has gone up. The food bills, petrol,
:02:58. > :03:02.everything. I believe we are still in a crisis. A debt charities
:03:03. > :03:05.helping her and many others and they say last year the number of people
:03:06. > :03:11.turning for them to advice increased by 43%. The sums people are when has
:03:12. > :03:16.fallen but more are taking out payday loans to cover their bills.
:03:17. > :03:22.Up from 2.6% in 2010 to more than 18% last year. In this area of
:03:23. > :03:29.Swansea many are finding money tight. This community cafe has kept
:03:30. > :03:36.prices and is serving meals costing just ?1. The all-day breakfast is
:03:37. > :03:43.particularly popular. We have got a lot of people really struggling
:03:44. > :03:48.early in 2014. Jobs are hard to come by and benefits are being kept and
:03:49. > :03:54.we have to eat. This is our way of providing affordable meals. In Wales

:04:29. > :04:32.to welfare nor make up the saying that does not include changes
:04:33. > :04:37.prices have been rising more steeply than wages year after year. Whatever
:04:38. > :04:42.the government 's spin, there are -- the reality is exposed by today's
:04:43. > :04:55.report and more people in Wales are working in poverty and having to
:04:56. > :04:58.rely on payday lenders. Debt is obviously built up over some time
:04:59. > :05:06.and in 2009 saw the sharpest drop in wages. There is a long-term economic
:05:07. > :05:14.plan in place and as a result of the recent inflation figures, people are
:05:15. > :05:17.now finding themselves better off. What is clear from the debate about
:05:18. > :05:21.whether we are better off is that the cost of living will dominate
:05:22. > :05:23.arguments right up until the general election.
:05:24. > :05:31.Sarah joins me now. So we know the politicians are fighting it out, but
:05:32. > :05:35.what's your take on the debate? There are some very good signs
:05:36. > :05:38.around. We know and employment is falling in Wales and if you look at
:05:39. > :05:41.the number of people in the Welsh workforce it is bigger than it has
:05:42. > :05:50.been to 22 years. That is good news. We also knew we are making and

:05:55. > :06:00.when we look at different parts of the UK but our economy is growing.
:06:01. > :06:04.This argument highlights how severe the 2008 recession was. Although the
:06:05. > :06:07.government is right in saying that in the last year the average weekly
:06:08. > :06:14.wage has risen more than inflation, we've had many years since 2008 when
:06:15. > :06:18.people have seen prices going up much more than they wages. A lot of
:06:19. > :06:24.people had a wage freeze a few years ago at a time when inflation and the
:06:25. > :06:27.cost of living was going up 3% to 4%. We got a lot of ground to make
:06:28. > :06:36.up and although things are improving the dish -- economy is not as big as
:06:37. > :06:40.it was in 2008. People are gathering at a meeting on
:06:41. > :06:43.Anglesey this evening, where there's growing opposition to building new
:06:44. > :06:46.power lines and pylons across the island. Engineers are planning for
:06:47. > :06:49.new energy schemes which include a nuclear power station at Wylfa and
:06:50. > :06:56.offshore wind farms. Our environment correspondent, Iolo ap Dafydd,
:06:57. > :06:59.reports. Increasingly Anglesey is cultivating
:07:00. > :07:05.its ambition to become an energy aisle. Within a decade new turbines,

:07:44. > :07:46.According to many people on Anglesey whether they are supportive or
:07:47. > :07:52.opposed the new power schemes like offshore wind farms, they are
:07:53. > :07:56.concerned the grid is intent on building new pylons despite some

:08:19. > :08:27.affect the tourism industry and house prices. They could be a 25%
:08:28. > :08:33.reduction. There are health issues. There are many concerns. The
:08:34. > :08:38.National Grid says its assessment and planning continues and it is now
:08:39. > :08:45.considering underground power cables. We are making sure we know
:08:46. > :08:53.their requirements. When we take the option for it will be the right one.
:08:54. > :08:57.In the feedback we have got, people said it was a sensitive area and we
