:00:00. > :00:12.Devon, the storm brought 40 millimetres of rain
:00:13. > :00:18.Good evening. The storm has claimed the life of an elderly man. Bob
:00:19. > :00:21.Thomas was 77. He died after being hit by a falling tree in his garden
:00:22. > :00:24.near Caernarfon. Tonight the Met Office has issued a yellow "be
:00:25. > :00:28.aware" warning for heavy rain and wind overnight and into tomorrow,
:00:29. > :00:52.and more than 5,000 people are still without power. Roger Pinney reports.
:00:53. > :00:59.And all it goes, more high winds, rain and snow and news about death
:01:00. > :01:04.caused by Wednesday's storm. 77-year-old Bob Thomas was hurt when
:01:05. > :01:07.a tree fell on him in the garden of his home in Caeathro. He died in
:01:08. > :01:13.hospital where he was being treated for head injuries. It is very sad
:01:14. > :01:16.that at the height of the storm on Wednesday, he was thinking of his
:01:17. > :01:38.animals and making sure the chickens were safe. By comparison, the
:01:39. > :01:41.problems other of us face pale away but they are problems nonetheless.
:01:42. > :01:44.We caught up with a crew of power workers, and trying to reconnect
:01:45. > :01:47.communities. This team has been working virtually around the clock,
:01:48. > :01:50.finishing at 1am and starting again at 7am. Already the latest storm is
:01:51. > :01:53.starting to set in. Who knows what problems the new storm will bring?
:01:54. > :01:57.The work isn't easy and seems never-ending. The weather has been
:01:58. > :02:01.horrendous. It is the worst I've ever known it and the conditions are
:02:02. > :02:13.awful. We have been working 18 hour days and are doing our best to get
:02:14. > :02:16.customers back on. Some hasty repairs to a roof elsewhere and at
:02:17. > :02:20.the fire station they have a generator, but most are having to
:02:21. > :02:23.manage without any power. In the village shop they are using a gas
:02:24. > :02:29.lamp and torches. The freezers are having to remain closed. We have got
:02:30. > :02:37.a call fire. And I have just bought a gas fire for the kitchen. I
:02:38. > :02:41.sympathise with the elderly in the village because they have no gas or
:02:42. > :02:45.electric at all and without that, they can't cook their food. And it
:02:46. > :02:49.is concerned for an elderly neighbour which is bringing this
:02:50. > :02:52.woman out with an urn of hot water for tea and coffee. Hello, Mary, I
:02:53. > :02:56.have got some hot water to you. Yesterday she had no heating and was
:02:57. > :03:02.snuggled up on the chair, covered in blankets. It was 12 degrees in her
:03:03. > :03:07.house yesterday. It was absolutely freezing. The electricity here went
:03:08. > :03:13.on Wednesday and more of it lost power in today's storm. And so, the
:03:14. > :03:30.bad weather continues. This is the River Wye at Monmouth. Surely some
:03:31. > :03:33.respite must be due. A review into storm damage in January and December
:03:34. > :03:36.has found that less than 1% of properties here actually flooded.
:03:37. > :03:39.But the report doesn't cover the storms we've had over the last two
:03:40. > :03:43.weeks. Natural Resources Wales says most defences held - but repair work
:03:44. > :03:46.is now needed at many of them. The defences did stop the worst of the
:03:47. > :03:49.worst of the weather and pat them on properties and people but 175
:03:50. > :03:53.defences were damaged and need to be repaired. If we look to the future,
:03:54. > :03:57.with the impact of climate change, we can expect more of the severe
:03:58. > :04:00.weather happening again. There could have been 50,000 properties
:04:01. > :04:05.affected. In reality, there were not. The impact is that we have been
:04:06. > :04:11.able to invest and we will continue to invest in protection and defences
:04:12. > :04:18.that will secure the future of our communities. Carmarthenshire
:04:19. > :04:20.council's chief executive has stepped down while police
:04:21. > :04:23.investigate payments to him, which the Wales Audit Office describe as
:04:24. > :04:26.unlawful. Mark James recived cash payments instead of employer pension
:04:27. > :04:35.contributions when he opted out of the staff scheme. Mr James says it's
:04:36. > :04:38.right that he leaves office while police conclude their inquiries, but
:04:39. > :04:41.says he hasn't done anything wrong. Pembrokeshire Council held a meeting
:04:42. > :04:45.earlier to discuss a similar issue, involving its chief executive Bryn
:04:46. > :04:47.Parry Jones, who remains in post. The leader of the Welsh
:04:48. > :04:52.Conservatives faces a growing crisis over his leadership tonight. The
:04:53. > :04:55.party's board have been holding emergency talks to discuss the
:04:56. > :05:00.controversial sacking of four Tory Assembly Members. They were removed
:05:01. > :05:03.from the front bench by Andrew RT Davies. It's understood a conference
:05:04. > :05:12.call was arranged to allow members to express "concern and anger" at Mr
:05:13. > :05:15.Davies' actions. Parents of pupils at a secondary school in Cardiff are
:05:16. > :05:21.consulting solicitors after children were allegedly secretly filmed at a
:05:22. > :05:24.toilet in their school. It follows guilty pleas to voyeurism by the
:05:25. > :05:28.deputy headteacher at Ysgol Glantaf last month, involving a hidden
:05:29. > :05:33.camera at another location. Further investigations led detectives to the
:05:34. > :05:42.school. That's now prompted some parents to seek legal advice. Nick
:05:43. > :05:45.Palit reports. On 31st of January, 47-year-old Gareth Williams of the
:05:46. > :05:51.other car the magistrates court on three charges of 4 euros, involving
:05:52. > :05:57.a camera hidden in a toilet. Police recovered the camera and memory
:05:58. > :06:00.sticks with files of five children. The Welsh-medium deputy head pleaded
:06:01. > :06:03.guilty to recording to another person without their consent, for
:06:04. > :06:07.the purpose of sexual gratification. But those charges did not relate to
:06:08. > :06:09.any offences at the school where he taught. Since then, Police have
:06:10. > :06:12.widened their investigation to include Ysgol Glantaf. Sources have
:06:13. > :06:15.told BBC Wales that teachers, parents and pupils have been spoken
:06:16. > :06:18.to by police about alleged secret filming at the school. Now some
:06:19. > :06:28.worried parents have been seeking legal advice. If it is found that
:06:29. > :06:36.children have been filmed on school premises in the toilets, then there
:06:37. > :06:42.was undoubtedly a claim for the children by their parents. There is
:06:43. > :06:49.a breach of privacy. And the nature of the breach is obviously extremely
:06:50. > :06:54.serious. Last week the headteacher wrote to parents of the 1000 500
:06:55. > :07:01.pupils to tell them that police officer been given full access to
:07:02. > :07:04.the school to carry out their investigations He also acknowledged
:07:05. > :07:06.that the situation was extremely concerning for everyone involved
:07:07. > :07:10.with the school. Meanwhile Mr Williams has been suspended from his
:07:11. > :07:15.post here and is due to appear before Cardiff Crown Court on the
:07:16. > :07:19.21st of this month for sentencing. It's been described as the largest
:07:20. > :07:22.fire on Borth Peat Bog for more than 20 years. Fire crews spent hours
:07:23. > :07:26.trying to control the flames, which were burning close to the village
:07:27. > :07:34.near Aberystwyth. Now the fire is out, investigators are looking for
:07:35. > :07:37.the cause. A lorry driver has been fined more than ?300 with nine
:07:38. > :07:40.points on his licence after his truck overturned on the Britannia
:07:41. > :07:43.Bridge linking Anglesey with the mainland, at the height of
:07:44. > :07:50.Wednesday's storm. The bridge was closed to lorries at the time.
:07:51. > :07:56.Magistrates heard that Slovakian Igor Kolarik hit a van, causing 17
:07:57. > :07:59.hours of delays. The weather's been disrupting the weekend's rugby.
:08:00. > :08:02.Tonight's Pro 12 match between the Dragons and Leinster went ahead in
:08:03. > :08:06.Dublin. Despite a heroic battle, the Welsh side lost 31-19. The Scarlets
:08:07. > :08:15.game against Ulster was called off because of a water-logged pitch in
:08:16. > :08:21.Belfast. Let's get the weekend weather forecast now. Here's Sue
:08:22. > :08:24.Charles. It has been a wet and wintry Valentine's Day and that
:08:25. > :08:29.warning for heavy rain remains in place. Not as severe as Wednesday,
:08:30. > :08:36.but gusts of 73 miles an hour at the Mumbles. We have a latest area of
:08:37. > :08:40.low pressure, the third in the week, moving east across the UK. That rain
:08:41. > :08:46.easing overnight as the font clears, but remaining windy. Reaching gale
:08:47. > :08:50.force a long exposed coasts. Temperatures falling to between 5-7
:08:51. > :08:55.Celsius. Tomorrow, blustery showers on and off through the morning,
:08:56. > :09:03.wintry in the hills, and a similar story across the UK. Showers falling
:09:04. > :09:08.as low above 300 metres. The wind becoming cold as it becomes
:09:09. > :09:13.north-westerly. Temperatures in the north-east of Scotland six Celsius,
:09:14. > :09:18.and then in the south of England. Windy end to day across Wales, but
:09:19. > :09:22.again, feeling chilly. We have a brief ridge of high pressure
:09:23. > :09:27.building on Saturday into Sunday, so Sunday is settled before this next
:09:28. > :09:34.front arrives. If Rusty, dry start, but clouding over from the West
:09:35. > :09:43.later on. -- a frosty Dysart -- dry start. Improving into Monday itself,
:09:44. > :09:48.and next week, it looks like the jet, which has been pushing storms
:09:49. > :09:52.across the Atlantic, starts to move northwards, so it should settle down
:09:53. > :10:00.and be less windy, with some longer dry spells as well. Thank goodness
:10:01. > :10:04.for that. That's Wales Today. Thank you for watching. Have a great
:10:05. > :10:07.weekend. From all of us on the programme, goodnight.
