:00:00. > :00:15.who do we think we are? That's all from us.

:00:16. > :00:21.Good evening. Workers and unions have reacted angrily to the news

:00:22. > :00:28.that 640 jobs are to go after a bakery in Newport announced it's to

:00:29. > :00:31.close. Politicians have described the move by Avana as "utterly

:00:32. > :00:34.devastating" and an "act of ingratitude". The company said in

:00:35. > :00:39.February that jobs were under threat after it lost a major Marks

:00:40. > :00:46.Spencer contract. Jordan Davies reports. Andrew Downey has been

:00:47. > :00:51.working at the Avana Bakery in Newport for 22 years. Today he was

:00:52. > :00:56.told it is going to close. What do you think you will do now? I will be

:00:57. > :01:03.60 this year. Who's going to employ me? That's the thing. Are you

:01:04. > :01:10.fearful that you won't find work? Yes. I live up in the valleys and

:01:11. > :01:14.there is nothing up there. It is a kick in the teeth really. As workers

:01:15. > :01:18.left today, they said they were angry but not surprised. Two months

:01:19. > :01:21.ago the bakery said many of the 640 jobs here were under threat after

:01:22. > :01:29.the loss of a multi-million pound Marks Spencer cake contract that

:01:30. > :01:32.accounted for 80% of its work. The bakery's owners began a period of

:01:33. > :01:39.consultation with staff and looked for new customers. Now, as that

:01:40. > :01:43.period comes to an end, they have announced the site is to shut. But

:01:44. > :01:51.union officials say they understand the bakery is still in talks with a

:01:52. > :01:54.potential big customer. The company is still talking to a big potential

:01:55. > :01:58.customer. We are hopeful that they will do business with Avana but at

:01:59. > :02:01.this moment in time, nothing is forthcoming so the company has made

:02:02. > :02:04.the decision to announce the closure. I phoned the parent company

:02:05. > :02:10.today to see if they would put anyone up for interview. They said

:02:11. > :02:13.no one would be available to speak but sent a statement saying they

:02:14. > :02:19.fully explored all the options available, but haven't been able to

:02:20. > :02:23.find a way to keep the site viable. Avana has been making cakes for

:02:24. > :02:26.decades. Today's news was described by the local MP as an act of

:02:27. > :02:33.ingratitude following years of fine service. Avana haven't been able to

:02:34. > :02:38.replace the massive M order it relied on for years. The company

:02:39. > :02:41.that owns this bakery now says it will try and minimise the number of

:02:42. > :02:54.compulsory redundancies before this site closes for good this summer.

:02:55. > :02:58.The widow of a man who died in the Hillsborough disaster has told an

:02:59. > :03:00.inquest jury how he dreamt of being "the best daddy ever". 25-year-old

:03:01. > :03:06.Steven Brown, from Holt near Wrexham, died when his wife was six

:03:07. > :03:10.months pregnant with their daughter. Sarah Brown - on the left - told the

:03:11. > :03:16.hearing in Warrington of the void he had left in their lives.

:03:17. > :03:19.The First Minister has told BBC Wales there are still companies

:03:20. > :03:23.potentially interested in buying the Murco oil refinery in Milford Haven.

:03:24. > :03:29.Carwyn Jones visited the site today to discuss options for keeping

:03:30. > :03:33.hundreds of jobs. It faces closure with the threat of up to 400 job

:03:34. > :03:40.losses after talks broke down with a potential buyer. It was good for the

:03:41. > :03:43.First Minister to hear first hand about the situation we find

:03:44. > :03:46.ourselves in. We explored those options in terms of potential

:03:47. > :03:48.solutions to this situation - positive solutions to this

:03:49. > :03:55.situation. We've looked to him for guidance in terms of what support

:03:56. > :03:58.government can bring. Do soldiers wait longer for

:03:59. > :04:01.treatment in Wales than elsewhere in the UK? The Welsh Government has

:04:02. > :04:04.questioned the accuracy of the record of a meeting in which the

:04:05. > :04:09.most senior doctor in the armed forces raised concerns about NHS

:04:10. > :04:12.waiting times in Wales. The Ministry of Defence says the minutes were

:04:13. > :04:15.agreed by everyone - all it wants to do is ensure consistent treatment

:04:16. > :04:28.for soldiers across the UK. Here's our Political Editor Nick Servini.

:04:29. > :04:32.Soldiers returning from Afghanistan marched through the streets of

:04:33. > :04:36.Haverfordwest. Many of course come back injured and it is their

:04:37. > :04:39.treatment in the Welsh NHS which is at the centre of a high-profile

:04:40. > :04:43.political battle. At its heart is what was or was not said at a

:04:44. > :04:46.routine meeting of the UK and Welsh Government officials on care for

:04:47. > :04:51.Armed Forces personnel. A partial account of the meeting has been

:04:52. > :04:54.released. In it, the Armed Forces most senior medical officer says

:04:55. > :05:02.there were personnel facing longer waiting times in Wales than

:05:03. > :05:07.elsewhere. He also noted the example of patients being treated quicker

:05:08. > :05:10.thanks to referrals across borders. The MOD says the minutes were

:05:11. > :05:14.released after a Freedom of Information request, and they were

:05:15. > :05:18.agreed by all parties at the time. But the Welsh government says it's

:05:19. > :05:22.part of a political attack on Labour's handling of the NHS. And

:05:23. > :05:28.the First Minister Carwyn Jones has accused the UK Government of

:05:29. > :05:32.politicising the civil service. What happened is there was a meeting in

:05:33. > :05:36.London. Minutes that were not agreed were then leaked to the press by the

:05:37. > :05:39.Ministry of Defence as a way of getting back at us. We find that is

:05:40. > :05:42.unprofessional and unacceptable and it means that they are trying to

:05:43. > :05:53.politicise something based on a story that was the never there. --

:05:54. > :05:56.was never there. The Defence Secretary Phillip Hammond says he'll

:05:57. > :05:59.support the Surgeon General if he has concerns about waiting times in

:06:00. > :06:02.Wales. Other Conservatives say action needs to be taken. It is not

:06:03. > :06:06.good enough for my constituents, it is certainly not good enough for the

:06:07. > :06:09.Army, but over and above all, it undermines the military. They have

:06:10. > :06:13.the right to deserve prompt and efficient treatment, amongst the

:06:14. > :06:21.best in the world. That is sadly not happening in Wales. It is a scandal.

:06:22. > :06:24.The state of the NHS is always an emotive subject - the treatment of

:06:25. > :06:27.wounded soldiers makes it even more so.

:06:28. > :06:30.A female teacher from Newport who admitted a series of sexual offences

:06:31. > :06:33.against a teenage pupil has been spared a prison sentence. Kelly

:06:34. > :06:37.Burgess, who's 26, in the brown coat, admitted sexual activity with

:06:38. > :06:39.a boy when he was 16 and 17 last year. She's been sentenced to ten

:06:40. > :06:50.months imprisonment, suspended for two years.

:06:51. > :06:53.Our economy could suffer unless we produce more engineers. The Royal

:06:54. > :06:56.Academy of Engineers says we need at least an extra 2,500 more graduates

:06:57. > :07:00.in areas like science and technology. Today, an event has been

:07:01. > :07:07.held in Newport to try and encourage children to take up the challenge.

:07:08. > :07:10.Work has begun in St Asaph to build temporary flood barriers that can be

:07:11. > :07:14.put in place quickly when there's a risk of flooding. One person died

:07:15. > :07:21.and 400 homes were evacuated when the River Elwy burst its banks there

:07:22. > :07:24.two years ago. Cricket, and fewer than 13 overs

:07:25. > :07:27.were possible on the second day of Glamorgan's opening Championship

:07:28. > :07:30.match against Surrey. But Glamorgan still managed to take a couple of

:07:31. > :07:32.wickets, as Surrey moved to 209 for seven. Jim Allenby has taken four

:07:33. > :07:44.for 39. After a wet start to the week are

:07:45. > :07:56.things going to improve? Here's the weather. Yes they are. The rain has

:07:57. > :08:07.cleared away. The emphasis for the next few days is on dry weather. A

:08:08. > :08:19.few showers around tonight. A lot of places dry but still a colder night.

:08:20. > :08:35.Temperatures as low as -3. For us in Wales, a bright and breezy day in

:08:36. > :08:48.prospect. A cool westerly breeze. Bright and breezy. Most of the

:08:49. > :08:58.showers across Scotland and Northern Ireland. Most of Wales will be dry.

:08:59. > :09:09.Sunny spells with temperatures of ten to 12. Cloud around tomorrow.

:09:10. > :09:24.Temperatures dropping to five in places. Still plenty of dry weather.

:09:25. > :09:28.High pressure heading our way for the weekend.

:09:29. > :09:31.Thanks Derek. Quick look ahead to tomorrow's programme Offa's Dyke

:09:32. > :09:34.stretches from Chepstow to Prestatyn - the one time boundary between

:09:35. > :09:37.Wales and the Saxon Kingdom of Mercia. But now there's evidence it

:09:38. > :09:41.may be 200 years older than previously thought, and may not have

:09:42. > :09:44.been built by King Offa at all. More tomorrow evening at 6:30pm.

:09:45. > :09:47.Jeremy Paxman's got Newsnight over on BBC Two now, hearing the voices

:09:48. > :09:51.and memories of those who witnessed the Rwandan genocide 20 years ago.

:09:52. > :09:53.We're back on Breakfast from 6am with the latest news and sport,

:09:54. > :09:58.traffic updates and weather forecasts. That's Wales Today. Thank

:09:59. > :10:00.you for watching - from all of us on the programme, good night.
