:00:13. > :00:17.Good evening. There's been a dramatic rise in the number of

:00:18. > :00:20.people in Wales diagnosed with the most serious form of skin cancer.

:00:21. > :00:23.Figures by Cancer Research UK show the rate of people diagnosed with

:00:24. > :00:29.malignant melanoma here has more than quadrupled over the past 40

:00:30. > :00:33.years. Carwyn Jones reports. We're a nation of sun lovers, and after the

:00:34. > :00:35.winter we've had, who can blame the hundreds of people in Porthcawl

:00:36. > :00:41.today soaking up the Easter sunshine. But prolonged exposure to

:00:42. > :00:46.UV rays comes at a cost. That's seven, eight months before she died.

:00:47. > :00:48.Jeffrey May lost his wife Elaine to skin cancer last year. She developed

:00:49. > :00:55.malignant melanoma, which then spread to her gall bladder, her

:00:56. > :01:00.spine, and finally to her brain. Melanoma is a vile, horrible

:01:01. > :01:07.illness. It's skin cancer, cancer that gets in your blood system and

:01:08. > :01:12.attacks the organs of your body. I think about Elaine every day of my

:01:13. > :01:16.life, and shall do for the rest of my life, and think about could I

:01:17. > :01:22.have done anything more? Just wish I could. Malignant melanoma is the

:01:23. > :01:26.most serious form of skin cancer. The main cause is sun damage to the

:01:27. > :01:31.skin. In women, the most common place to develop it is on the legs.

:01:32. > :01:34.In men, it's on the chest and the back.

:01:35. > :01:36.Figures released today show that 18 in every 100,000 people are

:01:37. > :01:40.diagnosed with malignant melanoma in Wales. In the mid 1970s, that number

:01:41. > :01:43.was just four for 100,000. That means around 730 people here are

:01:44. > :01:46.developing malignant melanoma each year. Compare that to 40 years ago,

:01:47. > :01:56.when the figure stood at 90 people each year.

:01:57. > :01:59.The number of people being diagnosed with skin cancer has quadrupled over

:02:00. > :02:03.the last 40 years, making it the fifth most common cancer in Wales,

:02:04. > :02:07.and this will mean more people are dying of the disease.

:02:08. > :02:12.The rise in skin cancer rates in Wales can be put down to more of us

:02:13. > :02:15.using sun beds and our love of beach holidays, either abroad or closer to

:02:16. > :02:19.home. As thousands of us flocked to the west coast for the Easter

:02:20. > :02:24.getaway, many were unaware of the risks caused by increased exposure

:02:25. > :02:28.to the sun. I don't wear sun cream because I get

:02:29. > :02:33.a tan next morning. Not at all unless I am abroad. It depends on

:02:34. > :02:37.how hot it is on the day. As ever, the advice is to be

:02:38. > :02:39.sensible in the sun. Spend more time in the shade and use plenty of

:02:40. > :02:42.sunscreen. If caught early enough malignant

:02:43. > :02:46.melanoma can be treated successfully, but when it spreads to

:02:47. > :02:51.other parts of the body, it can be a deadly disease. The cancer than can

:02:52. > :02:54.prove fatal. Motorcyclists are being urged to

:02:55. > :02:57.take care whilst driving, to reduce the number of deaths on North Wales

:02:58. > :03:01.roads. They've accounted for almost 60% of serious casualties on one

:03:02. > :03:03.road over the last decade - the A494.

:03:04. > :03:05.Today, North Wales Police launched the Bikesafe campaign at the

:03:06. > :03:12.Horseshoe Pass Complex in Llangollen, a popular meeting place

:03:13. > :03:15.for motorcyclists. Army medics who've recently returned

:03:16. > :03:18.from their second tour of Afghanistan have been granted the

:03:19. > :03:24.freedom of Cardiff. Reserve soldiers from 203 Welsh Field Hospital

:03:25. > :03:35.marched outside City Hall. Nicola Smith was there. Today they wore

:03:36. > :03:39.their military uniform with pride. These men and women have served in

:03:40. > :03:43.places like the Balkan, Iraq and Afghanistan, and today, the city

:03:44. > :03:49.said thank you. Tomorrow morning though, they will return to work, as

:03:50. > :03:53.doctors, physio, radiographers in hospitals across Wales. Jessica is

:03:54. > :03:57.one of them. She is a staff nurse on the vascular unit at the University

:03:58. > :04:02.Hospital of Wales in Cardiff. Four years ago, she joined the military,

:04:03. > :04:08.and has just completed a tour duty with the unit in Camp Bastion. I was

:04:09. > :04:12.mentoring the Afghan medics to help them look after their casualties

:04:13. > :04:15.when believe. It was something I have never done before, it was a new

:04:16. > :04:20.experience and really good to work with people from different

:04:21. > :04:25.countries. They are known as the Welsh medics

:04:26. > :04:29.and Tina is the Colonel. Nine the five she is head of the Royal

:04:30. > :04:33.College of Nursing in Wales. It is a huge honour, to have the freedom of

:04:34. > :04:36.the city of Cardiff, for the whole of the field hospital, and the

:04:37. > :04:39.families are here and you can see that they are proud, because when we

:04:40. > :04:42.go on deployment they are there in the background looking after

:04:43. > :04:47.everything we have to come home to, we go out of life and come back in

:04:48. > :04:50.as reservists so it is for them as much as us, it is a whole family

:04:51. > :04:55.affair. The honour is purely ceremonial but

:04:56. > :04:59.the unit is only the ninth organisation to be awarded the

:05:00. > :05:03.freedom of Cardiff since the 1880s. Another chapter in the history of

:05:04. > :05:07.the reservists and the city where Tay are based.

:05:08. > :05:10.There's speculation tonight that Ryan Giggs could take over from

:05:11. > :05:13.David Moyes as the manager of Manchester United. After 11 losses

:05:14. > :05:16.this season, the club says Moyes hasn't been sacked, but declined to

:05:17. > :05:19.comment on his longer-term future. One bookmaker has placed Ryan Giggs

:05:20. > :05:23.as favourite to become the next permanent manager at Old Trafford.

:05:24. > :05:26.Staying with football, and Newport County drew with Burton at Rodney

:05:27. > :05:29.Parade 1-1. They're now 15th in League 2. Meanwhile, Wrexham were

:05:30. > :05:37.beaten by Lincoln City 1-0 in the Conference Premier.

:05:38. > :05:40.Cricket, and after a disappointing opening day for Glamorgan, on day

:05:41. > :05:43.two of their County Championship match Gloucestershire leads by 12

:05:44. > :05:50.runs, with four wickets remaining in the 1st innings. Glamorgan's first

:05:51. > :05:53.innings came to an end on 145. Gloucestershire are currently #19d 5

:05:54. > :05:57.for eight. As the bank holiday comes to an end,

:05:58. > :06:00.it's been pretty busy on the roads today, with plenty of people out

:06:01. > :06:01.making the most of the lovely weather too.

:06:02. > :06:07.Benny can tell good evening, it has been a glorious

:06:08. > :06:13.day across much of Wales with impressive temperatures. Highs of 20

:06:14. > :06:18.C. Considering the average is only 11, we weren't doing too bad. We do

:06:19. > :06:21.have heavy slow-moving showers, which could mixed with hail or

:06:22. > :06:24.thunder. Think part of the north escape the worst of those heavy

:06:25. > :06:28.showers and it is a fairly mild night with the temperatures no lower

:06:29. > :06:32.than eight. That will give us a mild start to Tuesday morning but we have

:06:33. > :06:37.the showers continuing for a time. Again heavy at times and we could

:06:38. > :06:42.see surface water flooding. Brightness between the showers if

:06:43. > :06:52.you are lucky, with highs of round 15. Fool feeling cooler than today.

:06:53. > :06:57.It was nice while it lasted. It will be back with an update after the

:06:58. > :07:00.tone clock news. In the meantime, enjoy your evening. Bye for now.
