:00:14. > :00:22.Good evening. There's been a dramatic rise in the

:00:23. > :00:26.number of people in Wales diagnosed with the most serious form of skin

:00:27. > :00:29.cancer. Figures by Cancer Research UK show the rate of people diagnosed

:00:30. > :00:32.with malignant melanoma here has more than quadrupled over the past

:00:33. > :00:35.40 years. Carwyn Jones reports. We're a nation of sun-lovers and

:00:36. > :00:39.after the winter we've had in Wales who can blame the hundreds of people

:00:40. > :00:42.in Porthcawl today soaking up the Easter sunshine. But prolonged

:00:43. > :00:52.exposure to UV rays can come at a cost. Geoffrey May lost his wife

:00:53. > :00:55.Elaine to skin cancer last year. She developed malignant melanoma which

:00:56. > :01:05.then spread to her gall bladder, her spine and finally to her rain. I

:01:06. > :01:12.think about her everyday and will do for the rest of my life. I think

:01:13. > :01:15.about wish I could do any more. Malignant melanoma is the most

:01:16. > :01:19.serious form of skin cancer. In women the most common place for it

:01:20. > :01:24.to develop is on the legs; in men it's on the chest and the back. The

:01:25. > :01:28.latest figures show that in Wales 18 in every 100,000 people are

:01:29. > :01:34.diagnosed with malignant melanoma. 40 years ago that number was just

:01:35. > :01:37.four per 100,000. That means 730 people here are developing the

:01:38. > :01:43.disease each year. Compare that to the mid 70s when the figure stood at

:01:44. > :01:48.90. The number of people being diagnosed with skin cancer has

:01:49. > :01:51.quadrupled in making it the fifth common cancer in Wales and that

:01:52. > :01:55.means more people will be dying of this disease. The rise in skin

:01:56. > :01:59.cancer rates in Wales can be put down to more of us using sun beds

:02:00. > :02:04.and our love of beach holidays. The advice is to be sensible, spend more

:02:05. > :02:06.time in the shade and use plenty of sunscreen. If caught earlier enough

:02:07. > :02:10.malignant melanoma can be treated successfully but when it spreads to

:02:11. > :02:13.other parts of the body, it can be a deadly disease - a cancer that can

:02:14. > :02:16.prove fatal. Army medics who've recently returned

:02:17. > :02:20.from their second tour of Afghanistan have been granted the

:02:21. > :02:23.Freedom of Cardiff. Reserve soldiers from 203 Welsh Field Hospital

:02:24. > :02:31.marched outside City Hall. Nicola Smith was there.

:02:32. > :02:37.Today they wore their military uniform with pride. These men and

:02:38. > :02:41.women have served in places like the Balkans, Iraq and Afghanistan and

:02:42. > :02:46.today the city said thank you. Tomorrow morning they will return to

:02:47. > :02:52.work as doctors, physios and radiographers in hospitals across

:02:53. > :02:56.Wales. Jessica is one of them, she is a staff nurse at the University

:02:57. > :03:00.Hospital of Wales in Cardiff. Four years ago she joined the military

:03:01. > :03:09.and has just completed a tour with the unit in Afghanistan. I was

:03:10. > :03:14.mentoring the medics to look after the injured after we leave. It was

:03:15. > :03:19.good to work with people from different countries. They are known

:03:20. > :03:28.as the Welsh medics. Tina Donnelly is the kernel and she is head of

:03:29. > :03:36.nursing in Wales. It is an honour, to have the freedom of Cardiff.

:03:37. > :03:41.Families are proud. They are in the background looking after everything

:03:42. > :03:49.we have two comeback too. It is for them, as much as others. The owner

:03:50. > :03:52.is ceremonial but the unit is only the ninth organisation to be awarded

:03:53. > :03:58.the freedom of Cardiff since the 1880s. Another chapter in the

:03:59. > :04:04.history of the reservists and the city where they are based.

:04:05. > :04:08.Snooker, and Michael White from Neath is currently trailing Mark

:04:09. > :04:10.Selby in the first round of the World Snooker Championship.

:04:11. > :04:13.He's down, eight frames to six and has his eye on joining Pontycymer's

:04:14. > :04:16.Ryan Day in the last 16. Cricket and on day two of

:04:17. > :04:19.Glamorgan's County Championship match, Gloucestershire are leading

:04:20. > :04:23.by 85 runs with one wicket remaining in the first innings. Glamorgan's

:04:24. > :04:24.first innings came to an end on 145, Gloucestershire finished the day 230

:04:25. > :04:28.for nine. That's it from the Bank Holiday

:04:29. > :04:33.team, we'll be back with updates in Breakfast from 6.25am tomorrow. But

:04:34. > :04:45.first the weather. It is a mild night across much of

:04:46. > :04:48.Wales with a temperature no lower than eight Celsius. Showers

:04:49. > :04:51.continuing in the morning. We could see some surface water flooding

:04:52. > :04:56.through tomorrow but there should be some brightness in between the

:04:57. > :05:00.showers as we go into the afternoon with highs of 15 Celsius. It will

:05:01. > :05:11.feel a touch cooler than today. Goodnight.

:05:12. > :05:19.After last year's called Easter we managed the warmest day of the year

:05:20. > :05:24.so far in Scotland. The day ended with thunderstorms across parts of

:05:25. > :05:25.Wales and southern England. We are left with his area of
