:00:00. > :00:00.firepower in military exercises. That is all from

:00:00. > :00:09.Welcome to Wales Today. Our top stories: A miner who almost died at

:00:10. > :00:12.Gleision describes how he crawled along a conveyor belt to escape as

:00:13. > :00:15.water quickly swept through the colliery.

:00:16. > :00:19.They decide what gets built in some of the most beautiful parts of the

:00:20. > :00:28.country but calls for powers to be stripped from the National Parks.

:00:29. > :00:30.Unhealthy hotspots. The parts of Wales with the highest health risks

:00:31. > :00:33.in Britain. Hogging parking spaces. The motor

:00:34. > :00:40.homes outstaying their welcome in this seaside town.

:00:41. > :00:42.It's very unfair I feel on the residents here who have bed and

:00:43. > :00:46.breakfast businesses. There should be a sea view and all they can see

:00:47. > :00:49.is a line of caravans. In tonight's sport: As Ryan Giggs

:00:50. > :00:53.prepares for his first game in charge of Manchester United his old

:00:54. > :00:56.team mate is hoping he can do Cardiff City a favour and beat one

:00:57. > :01:02.of their relegation rivals. I spoke to Giggsy, of course. I

:01:03. > :01:05.wished him all the best and that a boy from Cardiff should do us

:01:06. > :01:08.favours now. And I'm at Pontypridd Rugby Club

:01:09. > :01:25.where they're getting ready for one of their biggest games in years.

:01:26. > :01:30.Good evening. A miner working at the Gleision Colliery has been

:01:31. > :01:35.describing his dramatic escape when the pit flooded killing some of his

:01:36. > :01:38.colleagues. David Wyatt described how he'd been pinned down by the

:01:39. > :01:43.volume of water but managed to frantically crawl to safety. Four

:01:44. > :01:46.other miners lost their lives in the tragedy three years ago. From

:01:47. > :01:51.Swansea Crown Court, Nick Palit reports.

:01:52. > :01:54.The 15th of September 2011 and rescuers work frantically at the

:01:55. > :01:59.Gleision mine hoping to save the lives of four men trapped

:02:00. > :02:04.underground. But their efforts were in vain. David Powell, Gary Jenkins,

:02:05. > :02:07.Philip Hill and Charles Breslin all drowned, after 650,000 tonnes of

:02:08. > :02:16.water poured into the area where they were working 275 metres into

:02:17. > :02:20.the mountain. Prior to the flooding explosives had been used to break

:02:21. > :02:23.coal away from the seam. The company which own the mine and the mine

:02:24. > :02:27.manager were charged with manslaughter. Today at Swansea Crown

:02:28. > :02:32.Court, miner David Wyatt described what happened on the day the tragedy

:02:33. > :02:36.unfolded. Mr Wyatt, who'd been working at the pit since March 2010,

:02:37. > :02:40.said it was his job to load coal onto the conveyor belt or Panzer. He

:02:41. > :02:43.described how he'd been at his station about ten yards away from

:02:44. > :02:47.fellow miner Garry Jenkins working in cramped conditions with a roof

:02:48. > :03:01.height of just two foot six inches in places. He said suddenly there

:03:02. > :03:14.was a noise like a jet engine, like washing. Close to tears, he said how

:03:15. > :03:17.he jumped onto the conveyor belt. I crawled, I crawled he said. He told

:03:18. > :03:19.the court he could hear the noise behind in getting louder and louder

:03:20. > :03:22.and then it pinned me against the wall. He described how he rolled

:03:23. > :03:25.over the conveyor belt and managed to get 40 or 50 yards up the main

:03:26. > :03:31.drift until exhaustion forced in to stop. He said the water stopped four

:03:32. > :03:35.yards behind him. As he tried to crawl out of the mine he screamed at

:03:36. > :03:39.colleague Nigel Evans who was in front of him to get out quickly.

:03:40. > :03:44.This map, which was shown in court, shows the size and complexity of the

:03:45. > :03:51.Gleision Colliery. This is where the men would enter the mine. At the

:03:52. > :03:54.bottom of the main drift is what's called Heading one or H1. This is

:03:55. > :04:00.where Gary Jenkins's body was later found. This is where the three other

:04:01. > :04:03.men breached old workings, releasing enough water to fill an Olympic size

:04:04. > :04:07.swimming pool. Experts estimate the flood water was travelling at speeds

:04:08. > :04:11.of up to 21 miles per hour. Mine manager Malcolm Fyfield just escaped

:04:12. > :04:14.in time. Today the first police inspector on the scene described how

:04:15. > :04:18.Mr Fyfield exited the mine dishevelled, soaking wet and with a

:04:19. > :04:21.gash on his head. Mr Fyfield denies four charges of manslaughter through

:04:22. > :04:25.gross negligence and the mine operators, MNS mining, deny four

:04:26. > :04:32.counts of corporate manslaughter. The trial continues.

:04:33. > :04:36.A man accused of shooting his wife in the street will go on trial for

:04:37. > :04:39.her murder. Caroline Parry died after being found near her home in

:04:40. > :04:43.Newport. Christopher Parry suffered gunshot wounds to his head during

:04:44. > :04:53.the incident. He has admitted carrying a firearm or imitation

:04:54. > :04:56.firearm with criminal intent. Wales' three National Parks should

:04:57. > :04:59.be stripped of their planning powers as a first step towards abolishing

:05:00. > :05:02.them altogether. That's the call from the Farmers' Union of Wales. It

:05:03. > :05:11.claims the parks are anti-farming and anti-business. Abigail Neal has

:05:12. > :05:15.been finding out more. Such beauty has a unique value. Sometimes that

:05:16. > :05:21.means development can be a thorny issue. I with three national parks

:05:22. > :05:25.in Brecon, Pembrokeshire and Snowdonia say what can and can't be

:05:26. > :05:30.built within their boundaries. Farmers want them to lose this

:05:31. > :05:36.power. There is an inconsistency in the way they operate. It is

:05:37. > :05:40.undemocratic and it tends to be more concerned with tourism and incomers

:05:41. > :05:43.than it is with the need to population and agriculture. The

:05:44. > :05:47.Farmers' Union of Wales is calling for planning powers to be

:05:48. > :05:51.transferred to local authorities instead. The raise some support from

:05:52. > :06:00.small businesses. Tyrone Williams has a storage yard within

:06:01. > :06:04.Pembrokeshire national park. His planning permission has come with so

:06:05. > :06:10.many conditions. I can't come here after hours and there is no light

:06:11. > :06:14.available here. I have put lights up here but they do not comply. They

:06:15. > :06:22.are threatening to take me to court because I haven't complained with

:06:23. > :06:26.the conditions -- complied. Mr Williams has been helped by an

:06:27. > :06:29.architect who has taken on a number of disputes against the national

:06:30. > :06:34.parks. I have been a practitioner right across Wales for 50 years.

:06:35. > :06:40.There is a negative culture. It is as if we are in a museum. The

:06:41. > :06:43.national parks told me they were surprised by this attack because

:06:44. > :06:53.figures show they approve 85% of that -- applications. Farmers turned

:06:54. > :06:57.to benefit quite a bit from the work of national park authorities so I am

:06:58. > :07:02.slightly surprised the Farmers' Union of Wales are taking decisions

:07:03. > :07:05.that might be detrimental. These complaints from farmers and small

:07:06. > :07:09.businesses are not new but they are coming at the time of change because

:07:10. > :07:13.the last government is consulting on a new draft planning Bill. One of

:07:14. > :07:27.the proposals is to reduce the number of planning authorities in

:07:28. > :07:30.Wales. The data breach has affected three Welsh councils. In a letter

:07:31. > :07:35.sent to residents, Rhondda Cynon Taff council says details from

:07:36. > :07:40.before -- full electoral roll were released accidentally in March.

:07:41. > :07:44.Caerphilly Council on Torfaen Council have admitted they have been

:07:45. > :07:47.affected by the same glitch. All the local authorities say they have

:07:48. > :07:52.taken action to try to fix the errors.

:07:53. > :07:57.How healthy is your neighbourhood? Well, you can find out by using a

:07:58. > :08:00.new online map. It highlights the risk of developing certain diseases

:08:01. > :08:04.depending on where you live. Parts of South Wales comes out top in many

:08:05. > :08:06.categories. Researchers at Imperial College London studied the risk of

:08:07. > :08:10.developing 14 conditions, including heart disease and lung cancer. They

:08:11. > :08:14.found people in Bridgend and Rhondda Cynon Taf are more at risk of

:08:15. > :08:18.diseases like lung cancer and kidney disease. Skin cancer was more of a

:08:19. > :08:23.risk in parts of Pembrokeshire and heart disease in some areas of

:08:24. > :08:29.Flintshire. Professor Paul Elliott helped carry out the research and

:08:30. > :08:36.joins me now. Good evening. You quality health

:08:37. > :08:41.Atlas. How does it work? We hold all the national data on mortality,

:08:42. > :08:48.birds and so on and what we have done is taken that data together. We

:08:49. > :08:53.have mapped it on a local scale and has not been done before. We want to

:08:54. > :08:56.look at your graphic variability and ask questions of the data as to why

:08:57. > :09:05.some areas may be higher and others lower. What type of data were you

:09:06. > :09:08.looking at? We have cancer incidence eight and data from birth records

:09:09. > :09:17.including stillbirth and also low birth weight when a mother gives

:09:18. > :09:22.birth to a child. Parts of south Wales fared pretty badly. Why are

:09:23. > :09:31.people there more asterisk? We tried to take account of where people

:09:32. > :09:38.lived in pool areas and affluent areas. People living in poorer areas

:09:39. > :09:43.have worse health. This reflects lifestyle in particular smoking. In

:09:44. > :09:47.Wales, perhaps that's correction was not as good as it wasn't the rest of

:09:48. > :09:53.England. Perhaps some of the deprivation factors have been in.

:09:54. > :10:01.That is reflecting smoking rates and lifestyle. There is a heritage of

:10:02. > :10:04.industrial activity in Wales. We are looking over a long period of time

:10:05. > :10:09.and people carry that risk forward with them. What do you hope will

:10:10. > :10:15.happen with this research now? How useful is it? This is the first time

:10:16. > :10:24.that simply have put together this amount of data. It just raises

:10:25. > :10:27.questions. We see it as important for health policy and research is to

:10:28. > :10:31.look at the date and how to understand the patterns. Then we

:10:32. > :10:36.need to ask questions which will be studied in other types of study

:10:37. > :10:40.including individual level. This isn't about individual risk but the

:10:41. > :10:46.type of various people live in and the risk of those areas. You are

:10:47. > :10:56.hoping policymakers will act on your research? It has raised an awful lot

:10:57. > :10:59.of interest. The website has had 2 million hits an hour since it went

:11:00. > :11:05.live today so people are interested to know about and to question why

:11:06. > :11:09.there are variations on what causes the variations, to understand better

:11:10. > :11:15.our health and that will lead to prevention in future. Thank you very

:11:16. > :11:18.much for your time this evening. And if you want to find out how your

:11:19. > :11:25.neighbourhood fares in the research go to envhealthatlas.co.uk.

:11:26. > :11:29.You're watching Wales Today, a reminder of our top story. A miner

:11:30. > :11:33.who almost died at Gleision has told a court the moment the pit flooded

:11:34. > :11:39.sounded like a "jet engine". And coming up: We're at Pontypridd Rugby

:11:40. > :11:50.Club where they're getting ready for one of their biggest games in years.

:11:51. > :11:53.It has one of the best views in West Wales but residents living along a

:11:54. > :11:57.part of the prom in Aberystwyth aren't happy. They're complaining

:11:58. > :12:00.that holiday makers are parking big motor homes along the front spoiling

:12:01. > :12:04.the view and taking-up parking spaces. Ceredigion Council is now

:12:05. > :12:14.considering putting parking restrictions in place. Charlotte

:12:15. > :12:19.Dubenskij reports. It is a breathtaking view. But for

:12:20. > :12:24.some residents living here instead of the calming sea, they are seeing

:12:25. > :12:27.red. The complaint holiday-makers are bringing motorhomes and parking

:12:28. > :12:33.here for weeks at a time because there are no restrictions. It is

:12:34. > :12:37.very unfair on the residents here who have bed-and-breakfast

:12:38. > :12:41.businesses. They have their client is looking through windows where

:12:42. > :12:47.they should be ace EV land all they can see is a line of caravans. Over

:12:48. > :12:53.a 24-hour period we filmed the same campers parked up. One owner told me

:12:54. > :12:58.there is no alternative. They are not allowing anywhere else for the

:12:59. > :13:03.camper van is to park. They are big vehicles are they have to have a bit

:13:04. > :13:06.of space to park in. We can't leave our camper van wherever we are

:13:07. > :13:13.staying and then come into the towns. We have to bring it with us.

:13:14. > :13:19.It is our vehicle. But the local county council says that is not the

:13:20. > :13:25.case. There are lots of caravan sites around the area. There is one

:13:26. > :13:29.about a mile away. They could park there and they could walk the

:13:30. > :13:33.distance. It seems it is a cheap holiday with the can park for free.

:13:34. > :13:37.There are already parking restrictions here on the northside

:13:38. > :13:43.of the promenade. The recommendation is to extend those now to the south

:13:44. > :13:48.side. That movie is being welcomed by some businesses which rely on

:13:49. > :13:53.trade from tourists. If it was restricted to two or three hours we

:13:54. > :14:00.would have more holidaying makers. If they were staying in the evenings

:14:01. > :14:05.I don't see a problem but I can understand why they are staying all

:14:06. > :14:10.day. Residents have already made their views known to Ceredigion

:14:11. > :14:15.Council and a decision will be made next month. Until then, people here

:14:16. > :14:18.may have to put up with having rooms without a sea view.

:14:19. > :14:21.12 new musicians have been picked for a BBC Wales and Arts Council

:14:22. > :14:25.project to promote talented performers. Announced as part of BBC

:14:26. > :14:31.Radio Wales Music Day in Wrexham, the Horizons Scheme chose a dozen

:14:32. > :14:34.artists from 300 entries. They'll get the chance to showcase their

:14:35. > :14:39.music live on radio programmes as well as having professional

:14:40. > :14:43.recording sessions and photo shoots. There's something for everybody. If

:14:44. > :14:49.you love folk music there'll be something for you. If you love

:14:50. > :14:52.electronic music. And also there are incredible, beautiful personalities

:14:53. > :14:55.as well. Over the next 12 months by listening to Radio Cymru, Radio

:14:56. > :14:57.Wales people will get to know them quite well.

:14:58. > :15:00.Rare notebooks and manuscripts belonging to Dylan Thomas have

:15:01. > :15:05.arrived at the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth from the

:15:06. > :15:08.University of Buffalo in New York. The loan also includes a series of

:15:09. > :15:13.black and white photographs of the poet rarely seen. They'll be shown

:15:14. > :15:18.at an exhibition to mark the centenary of his birth.

:15:19. > :15:22.Another crucial weekend for both our Premier League sides. Here's Claire

:15:23. > :15:27.with tonight's sport. Good evening. Yes, and a resurgent

:15:28. > :15:30.Manchester United can do Cardiff City a favour tomorrow afternoon by

:15:31. > :15:34.beating one of their relegation rivals - Norwich. Former Wales

:15:35. > :15:37.captain, Ryan Giggs has admitted he's a little nervous about taking

:15:38. > :15:41.charge of Manchester United for the first time. Speaking at his first

:15:42. > :15:46.press conference as interim manager he said it had been a chaotic week,

:15:47. > :15:51.and he was hoping to get a good result tomorrow.

:15:52. > :15:56.I'm just concentrating on the short time, on the four game remaining and

:15:57. > :16:00.that's my main focus. My main focus is on tomorrow against Norwich which

:16:01. > :16:04.is going to be a tough game because they're fighting for their lives. I

:16:05. > :16:08.want to see goals, I want the passion. My immediate aim is to win

:16:09. > :16:11.Saturday. And that will please his former

:16:12. > :16:14.United team-mate and now Cardiff City manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

:16:15. > :16:18.He revealed he's spoken to both David Moyes and Ryan Giggs this week

:16:19. > :16:23.and hopes United can do them a favour by beating Norwich, who sit

:16:24. > :16:29.just above them in the table. Cardiff play Sunderland who are

:16:30. > :16:39.bottom on Sunday. Three games to go now and we're two

:16:40. > :16:42.points over knowledge. It is a situation everybody would take at

:16:43. > :16:47.the start of the season the Erin with a shout. It is the first time

:16:48. > :16:52.in 51 years, you can't expect this to going to mid-table. Three games

:16:53. > :16:55.to go. We have got a chance. Tomorrow, Swansea City are aiming

:16:56. > :16:59.for back-to-back Premier League wins for the first time in over a year.

:17:00. > :17:02.Aston Villa are the visitors to the Liberty Stadium where the Swans held

:17:03. > :17:06.an open training session for fans this week. Caretaker head coach,

:17:07. > :17:14.Garry Monk, says he wants to ensure the club's top-flight survival

:17:15. > :17:18.before discussing his own future. We have to mathematically make it for

:17:19. > :17:23.certain. We are not for certain. If we go into these three games and we

:17:24. > :17:29.don't get any points and the other teams get points, it is relegation

:17:30. > :17:32.for us. We need to fight for three points. When it is mathematically

:17:33. > :17:35.then that is when we consider and with the chairman of the club and

:17:36. > :17:38.see what the future is and what they're thinking is.

:17:39. > :17:42.Meanwhile, the Football Association of Wales has confirmed it has

:17:43. > :17:45.submitted a bid to UEFA to be chosen as one for Cardiff of the 13 host

:17:46. > :17:49.cities for the 2020 European Football Championships. The bid

:17:50. > :17:52.includes hosting matches at the Millennium Stadium, including three

:17:53. > :17:58.group games, plus either a last 16 or a quarter final match.

:17:59. > :18:01.The Welsh regions may be out of Europe but Pontypridd Rugby Club are

:18:02. > :18:06.flying the flag and play in one of their most important games in a

:18:07. > :18:10.decade tomorrow afternoon. A bumper crowd is expected at Sardis Road to

:18:11. > :18:15.watch them take on Leinster A in the semifinal of the British and Irish

:18:16. > :18:18.Cup. The side are being put through their final paces in training

:18:19. > :18:30.tonight and Jordan Davies is there for us.

:18:31. > :18:34.Welcome to Sardis Road. Otherwise known as the house of pain. They are

:18:35. > :18:39.going through their final paces. All we have got to do now is wait for

:18:40. > :18:46.the 5000 people to turn to fill the stadium. It will be a chance for

:18:47. > :18:56.this club to relive its glory days. If I can start with you, this tops

:18:57. > :19:02.off a good season for you. The club has never made it through to the

:19:03. > :19:10.final of this competition before. It is a tough task. They have got a

:19:11. > :19:14.very good squad. They have got a lot of experience. We have got to go at

:19:15. > :19:21.them. We are confident having beaten them last season. How is the

:19:22. > :19:27.training been so far? It is nice and light, seeing the game is tomorrow.

:19:28. > :19:33.You remember the glory days of the mid-90s. It is a chance to recapture

:19:34. > :19:39.that. It should be a tremendous occasion tomorrow. The atmosphere

:19:40. > :19:43.here is always great. We have had tremendous support. That hasn't

:19:44. > :19:50.changed since the mid-90s. There is plenty of cheered about in the last

:19:51. > :20:00.few years. We are looking forward to this tomorrow. Is it the same old

:20:01. > :20:04.faces who are still supporting you? Yes, the end of the day they are

:20:05. > :20:12.born and bred Pontypridd. That is their club. We very thankful for the

:20:13. > :20:17.support they have given us. I am sure they are looking forward as

:20:18. > :20:25.much as anyone to host the team of Leinster's calibre. And the added

:20:26. > :20:35.incentive is it will be a home tie if you win. Having a home final

:20:36. > :20:39.would be tremendous. We are under no illusions about the enormity of the

:20:40. > :20:46.task tomorrow. It'll be nice if we could make it. It chance to relive

:20:47. > :20:49.the glory days here. 5000 people, you should be a great game.

:20:50. > :20:52.Now most of us know all about the growing popularity of mountain

:20:53. > :20:55.biking in Wales. Well, there's a push this weekend to encourage more

:20:56. > :20:59.people with disabilities to take up the sport. Today at the Coed y

:21:00. > :21:01.Brenin centre near Dolgellau, instructors were getting to grips

:21:02. > :21:06.with the specially built adaptive bikes. Tomorrow there's a have a go

:21:07. > :21:13.session at Morfa Mawddach and on Sunday a full blown eight hour

:21:14. > :21:18.mountain trek. Awareness, I think, is the challenge. One of the

:21:19. > :21:22.objectives from our weekend is to just let people know that these

:21:23. > :21:25.kinds of places exist. We're not the only place, we're one of a very few

:21:26. > :21:29.at the moment but hopefully that's going to change as more people start

:21:30. > :21:33.asking the question, can I do that too? The answer is, generally, yes.

:21:34. > :21:39.You can crash these just as well as you can crash a two wheeled bike!

:21:40. > :21:40.Whatever your weekend plans are, you'll need to know the weather

:21:41. > :21:51.forecast. Derek has the details. Good evening. The waterproofs will

:21:52. > :21:56.come in handy this weekend. There is some rain on the way. Heavy showers

:21:57. > :22:00.and windier. But I can promise some dry weather and sunny spells as

:22:01. > :22:05.well. Talking of sunshine, Pembrokeshire was the place to be

:22:06. > :22:08.today. Beautiful in Tenby. Elsewhere, cloudier with rain

:22:09. > :22:20.spreading into south east, mid and north Wales during the afternoon. A

:22:21. > :22:24.few heavy showers in the south west. This evening, rain in the north east

:22:25. > :22:28.will clear. Elsewhere any showers will die away. Dry for a time but

:22:29. > :22:31.then a band of rain will spread north across the country after

:22:32. > :22:38.midnight. The wind picking-up as well. The reason for the wind and

:22:39. > :22:43.rain is an area of low pressure centred over the Celtic Sea

:22:44. > :22:46.tomorrow. Now, by eight in the morning the rain will have cleared

:22:47. > :22:53.from the north coast leaving most places dry with some sunshine.

:22:54. > :23:02.However, there will be a few showers in the south and west. Breezy on the

:23:03. > :23:05.coast. So some dry weather tomorrow but showers will become more

:23:06. > :23:13.widespread during the afternoon. Most of them in the south where they

:23:14. > :23:15.will be heavy. The best of the sunshine in the north. Top

:23:16. > :23:19.temperature 12-15 Celsius and breezy. Strong winds in the south

:23:20. > :23:23.west and on the Bristol Channel coast. The Tour of Pembrokeshire

:23:24. > :23:27.cycle ride is taking place tomorrow. It may start dry but blustery

:23:28. > :23:33.showers are forecast. A strong wind as well. Good luck. In Conwy

:23:34. > :23:40.tomorrow, sunny spells with a few showers in the afternoon. A high of

:23:41. > :23:43.15C in Betws y Coed. In the Vale of Glamorgan, the morning may be dry

:23:44. > :23:48.but expect showers in the afternoon. Windy on the coast. 13C in Barry.

:23:49. > :23:53.Tomorrow night further showers, especially in the south. A few in

:23:54. > :23:59.mid Wales. Drier in the north. The wind easing as well. Sunday hit and

:24:00. > :24:04.miss with showers. Heavy in places with a risk of thunder but some dry,

:24:05. > :24:07.brighter spells as well. Gaps in the cloud and sunny intervals.

:24:08. > :24:11.Temperatures around average with a north easterly breeze. Next week,

:24:12. > :24:16.some sunshine. Also a little rain and a few showers. The signs are it

:24:17. > :24:23.will turn colder for the start of May with lower temperatures and even

:24:24. > :24:25.some frost. Mixed weather this weekend, some showers and sunny

:24:26. > :24:31.intervals as well. The main news again from the BBC. A

:24:32. > :24:33.miner working at the Gleision Colliery has been describing his

:24:34. > :24:36.dramatic escape when the pit flooded, killing some of his

:24:37. > :24:39.colleagues. Four men lost their lives in the tragedy three years

:24:40. > :24:43.ago. The manager and mine owners deny manslaughter charges.

:24:44. > :24:46.And the Royal Bank of Scotland has abandoned attempts to pay bonuses

:24:47. > :24:50.twice the size of salaries after being told the move would not be

:24:51. > :24:54.approved. I'll have an update for you at eight

:24:55. > :24:58.and a full round-up after the BBC News at Ten. That's Wales Today,

:24:59. > :24:59.from all of us here have a great weekend. Good evening.
