:00:18. > :00:20.Good evening. Manufacturing in Wales can be rebuilt - despite years of

:00:21. > :00:25.decline. The former boss of Japanese electronics giant Sony, Sir Howard

:00:26. > :00:28.Stringer, has told BBC Wales, companies can win back business

:00:29. > :00:32.that's been lost to Asia. It comes as new figures show the economy is

:00:33. > :00:35.close to being as strong as it was before the recession hit, with

:00:36. > :00:38.manufacturing going from strength to strength.

:00:39. > :00:43.Here's our business correspondent, Brian Meechan.

:00:44. > :00:49.Manufacture ing has always played a significant part in the Welsh

:00:50. > :00:53.economy and that continues to be the case today. Much of it has moved to

:00:54. > :01:00.Asia, though, where wages are much lower, making production costs

:01:01. > :01:08.cheaper. Some manufacturing work is returning, Sony is now making this,

:01:09. > :01:16.a basic credit-card size computer for children. There is a lesson in

:01:17. > :01:21.that for other manufacturers. The way to bring manufacturing back to

:01:22. > :01:26.Wales is to find a way to make it worthwhile for the Japanese company

:01:27. > :01:31.and one of it is the distance to the customer. It is very long from

:01:32. > :01:35.China. Everything moves so fast. In the ten weeks it takes a ship to get

:01:36. > :01:39.to the UK, your market will have changed. If you do your

:01:40. > :01:42.manufacturing in Wales, at reasonable costs, you have a

:01:43. > :01:45.tremendous advantage on your competition in getting to the market

:01:46. > :01:54.so quickly. But the employment figures are startling. In the 2001

:01:55. > :02:00.Census just over 200,000 people were working in manufacturing. Ten years

:02:01. > :02:05.later, that number was 144,000. That is a 30% rediction. Over the last

:02:06. > :02:08.two years, Sony has transformed how it manufactures its cameras. Gone

:02:09. > :02:13.are the old production lines where people work on specific components

:02:14. > :02:17.and now one operator creates one kit and that means people like Claire

:02:18. > :02:21.take 90 minutes to put something like this together. Sony has also

:02:22. > :02:26.moved production of these smaller cameras from Asia to Wales. It's

:02:27. > :02:30.innovations like this that brings that extra work in. Innovation and

:02:31. > :02:35.quality will be our two real drivers of everything we do. We would always

:02:36. > :02:40.be trying to innovate and change processes to make them more

:02:41. > :02:48.efficient, higher quality, faster through-put time. That is our goal.

:02:49. > :02:51.Manufacture ing may never return to Wales on the scale that it left.

:02:52. > :02:55.Rising costs in Asia and long shipping times mean there are

:02:56. > :02:58.opportunities for Welsh firms to compete for business.

:02:59. > :03:01.And you can hear the full interview with Sir Howard Stringer on Wales at

:03:02. > :03:04.Work, at 7.00am tomorrow morning on BBC Radio Wales.

:03:05. > :03:07.A man and a woman have been taken to hospital after a fire at a ground

:03:08. > :03:11.floor flat near Pontypridd. Emergency services were called to

:03:12. > :03:15.the flat in New Road in Ynysybwl at around 8.30pm this evening. Fire and

:03:16. > :03:20.ambulance crews, and the police, are still at the scene.

:03:21. > :03:25.There are calls for more of us to report offensive material on social

:03:26. > :03:27.media to the police. It comes a day after a man from Port Talbot was

:03:28. > :03:30.jailed for posting offensive messages on Twitter, following the

:03:31. > :03:34.stabbing of teacher Ann Maguire in Leeds. Online safety experts say we

:03:35. > :03:45.shouldn't leave it to others to take on the so-called "internet trolls".

:03:46. > :03:51.Joy Lamb is more cautious online than she used to be. It is

:03:52. > :03:54.two-and-a-half years since her granddaughter was killed by a train

:03:55. > :03:59.at this station in Liverpool on a night out with friends. The family's

:04:00. > :04:03.distress was deepened when her father discovered a Facebook tribute

:04:04. > :04:08.page set up by school mates had been targeted by trolls posting offensive

:04:09. > :04:13.pictures about the teenager. He first said to me, "Don't look at it

:04:14. > :04:18.because it will upset you." I did and it did upset me. I felt that

:04:19. > :04:23.that was the reaction that the trolls wanted. So, we totally

:04:24. > :04:27.ignored the whole thing in the end and we didn't give them the time of

:04:28. > :04:32.day because that is the reaction. Their claim to fame. Increasingly,

:04:33. > :04:36.police aren't ignoring them. Yesterday, this man was jailed for

:04:37. > :04:44.eight weeks for remarks on Twitter about the stabbing of Ann Maguire.

:04:45. > :04:52.This man runs an organisation which calls itself the Social Media

:04:53. > :04:56.Police. The key sites such as Twitter and Facebook are doing a lot

:04:57. > :04:59.of work within schools, in trying to educate people about how to use

:05:00. > :05:07.social media responsibly and take steps. Legislation will tie up

:05:08. > :05:10.police time. So through people and parent engagement and community

:05:11. > :05:14.engagement, it is a more effective way to resolve trolling long-term.

:05:15. > :05:19.Earlier this year, ChildLine reported that it had seen an 87%

:05:20. > :05:22.increase in contacts from victims of online bullying, one of the main

:05:23. > :05:28.problems was racist bullying where there had been a 69% increase. With

:05:29. > :05:31.most of us having access to smartphones or tablets, it's never

:05:32. > :05:35.been easier to post things online. ChildLine say the 24-hour nature of

:05:36. > :05:39.online bullying or trolling means there is no escape for victims and

:05:40. > :05:44.that can sometimes lead to feelings of low self-esteem and self-harming

:05:45. > :05:47.or suicide. Joy and her family had hoped the internet would be a place

:05:48. > :05:51.where they could share their happiest memories of Georgia. The

:05:52. > :05:55.trolls have only added to their heartbreak.

:05:56. > :05:57.It's emerged that a man suspected of abuse in the north Wales care system

:05:58. > :06:00.has been found dead. Kenneth Wheatley, who was 62, was being

:06:01. > :06:03.questioned by the National Crime Agency about historical claims of

:06:04. > :06:05.abuse. He was found dead on a railway line, three days after he

:06:06. > :06:08.was arrested and bailed by Suffolk Police on suspicion of the indecent

:06:09. > :06:14.assault of a boy near Ipswich in 1976.

:06:15. > :06:18.The UK's oldest coal-fired power station near Newport is to close,

:06:19. > :06:22.putting 83 jobs at risk. The owners of Uskmouth power station, Scottish

:06:23. > :06:25.and Southern Energy, say they've been unable to find a buyer for the

:06:26. > :06:28.site. They say they're exploring redeployment options within the

:06:29. > :06:36.With the European elections less than a fortnight away, former Plaid

:06:37. > :06:40.Cymru leader Lord Wigley has attacked the three main UK parties

:06:41. > :06:43.for allowing UKIP to steer the agenda. He's lent his weight to

:06:44. > :06:46.Plaid's campaign for the European elections. The party hopes to keep

:06:47. > :06:50.its only seat in the European Parliament. In a speech in Merthyr

:06:51. > :06:53.Tydfil tonight, Lord Wigley warned that leaving the EU would be

:06:54. > :07:07.Plaid Cymru's vote will hold up. What we are afraid of is not losing

:07:08. > :07:13.our seat, but UKIP gathering a momentum that drives us to a

:07:14. > :07:15.position where Wales finds itself being taken out on the coat tails of

:07:16. > :07:19.London and that is not acceptable. The former Cardiff City boss Malky

:07:20. > :07:22.Mackay has apologised "without reservation" to club owner Vincent

:07:23. > :07:25.Tan, over the issues that led to his sacking in December. The 42-year-old

:07:26. > :07:28.Scot has also halted his legal action against the club, after

:07:29. > :07:33.agreeing a settlement. The club's former head of recruitment Iain

:07:34. > :07:38.Moody issued a similar statement. Rugby and Warren Gatland is already

:07:39. > :07:41.without Sam Warburton and Leigh Halfpenny for Wales' summer tour.

:07:42. > :07:44.Today, news that Justin Tipuric won't make the plane to South

:07:45. > :07:47.Africa. The Ospreys flanker will undergo

:07:48. > :07:50.surgery on his shoulder next week Well, I'm afraid we're in for a bit

:07:51. > :07:56.of a wet weekend. It's not looking great, is it,

:07:57. > :08:06.Derek? It isn't. We are in for a taste of

:08:07. > :08:10.autumn. Low pressure bringing more rain and heavy showers. Strong to

:08:11. > :08:14.gale force winds as well. I can promise you at least a little

:08:15. > :08:17.sunshine. Tonight, rain will spill across the whole country, some heavy

:08:18. > :08:23.rain and hill fog. The winds picking up again as well, with lowest

:08:24. > :08:26.temperatures 7-11 Celsius. The reason for this disturbed spell of

:08:27. > :08:30.weather is low pressure, which will track across the UK over the

:08:31. > :08:34.weekend. So, rain first thing tomorrow will clear away. It will

:08:35. > :08:39.dry and brighten up. Some sunshine for a time, but showers will follow.

:08:40. > :08:42.Across the rest of the UK, rain will continue to move north and east.

:08:43. > :08:45.Clearing away into the North Sea, but the rain will linger and become

:08:46. > :08:49.slow-moving across Scotland. Elsewhere, the sun will come out,

:08:50. > :08:53.but with heavy blustery showers, a risk of thunder and a warning of

:08:54. > :08:56.strong to gale force winds in the south-west. It is a case of dodging

:08:57. > :09:00.the showers in Wales tomorrow afternoon. Some of them will be

:09:01. > :09:04.heavy with thunder. Dry intervals in between. And watch out for strong to

:09:05. > :09:08.gale force winds on the Bristol Channel coast and in Pembrokeshire.

:09:09. > :09:12.Tomorrow night will continue windy. Quite wet for some of us as well

:09:13. > :09:17.with further rain and blustery showers. Sunday will be cool and

:09:18. > :09:21.windy. The wettest weather is likely on the mountains. Elsewhere, some

:09:22. > :09:28.places becoming dry in the afternoon and brightening up with sunny

:09:29. > :09:32.intervals. The winds slowly easing, so the bluebells are in for a

:09:33. > :09:36.watering this weekend. Some strong winds as well. Next week, the winds

:09:37. > :09:38.will ease with sunshine and showers. Later in the week, signs of high

:09:39. > :09:46.pressure heading our way. That's Wales Today. We're back

:09:47. > :09:49.tomorrow at 6.10am. From all of us on the programme,

:09:50. > :09:57.good night.
