:00:00. > :00:18.from us. There

:00:19. > :00:27.Good evening. He installed secret cameras in school toilets and

:00:28. > :00:32.showers to film more than 30 pupils. Today Gareth Williams, the deputy

:00:33. > :00:36.headteacher of Ysgol Glantaf in Cardiff, was sentenced to five years

:00:37. > :00:38.in prison after pleading guilty to charges of voyeurism and possessing

:00:39. > :00:43.thousands of indecent images of children. Caroline Evans was in

:00:44. > :00:48.court. For seven years he collected and

:00:49. > :00:51.made indecent images of children, some he downloaded, others he

:00:52. > :00:56.secretly filmed himself, placing tiny cameras in toilets. Today the

:00:57. > :01:02.once respected deputy headteacher at Ysgol Glantaf was sent to jail for

:01:03. > :01:06.five years. Sentencing him, the judge told Gareth Williams his

:01:07. > :01:12.crimes were both sophisticated and persistent. As a result of his

:01:13. > :01:16.depraved behaviour, he said, he had lost his career, reputation, but

:01:17. > :01:21.that was as nothing compare to the horror felt by many parents who

:01:22. > :01:27.entrusted their children to his care. A former TV presenter who

:01:28. > :01:31.remained a popular figure, Gareth Williams was caught after a global

:01:32. > :01:40.investigation headed by Canadian police in 2012. Today police in

:01:41. > :01:44.Toronto said they've broken up a large-scale international child

:01:45. > :01:48.pornography ring. They're the investigation hit the headlines but

:01:49. > :01:51.here, authorities took another 12 months to assess the information

:01:52. > :01:56.they had been given. They've admitted more could have been done

:01:57. > :01:59.sooner. Professor Rob Snowden, a forensic psychologist, says it

:02:00. > :02:05.possible Williams wished to be caught. As soon as you move into a

:02:06. > :02:09.public space and commit voyeurism, then there is a very strong chance

:02:10. > :02:14.of being caught. Therefore as a psychologist, I begin to question

:02:15. > :02:18.why somebody might do that and this may point to the person actually

:02:19. > :02:21.wanting to be caught. That what they are doing they know is wrong and

:02:22. > :02:25.they want to stop it and therefore this escalation may have been to put

:02:26. > :02:31.themselves in a situation where they were stopped. It was the nature of

:02:32. > :02:34.his offending, too, which has shocked those involved in the

:02:35. > :02:38.teaching profession. Some of the images had been catalogued with the

:02:39. > :02:44.children's names, dates of birth and dates of recording. I think part of

:02:45. > :02:48.the shock of this particular case is that this gentleman was a teacher

:02:49. > :02:52.and he quite clearly abused the position of trust and authority that

:02:53. > :02:58.he had. The reassuring thing is that he's been caught and will be taken

:02:59. > :03:01.out of the system. The offences, said the judge, showed a significant

:03:02. > :03:06.level of planning and deception. Tonight the man, who had never been

:03:07. > :03:11.in trouble with the police before, begins five years behind bars.

:03:12. > :03:14.Hundreds of people have lined the streets of Cowbridge in the Vale of

:03:15. > :03:19.Glamorgan to pay tribute to a soldier killed in Afghanistan.

:03:20. > :03:22.Captain Thomas Clarke was on board a helicopter which crashed in Kandahar

:03:23. > :03:28.Province last month, killing four other people.

:03:29. > :03:35.A town at a standstill to remember one of its fall. Normally a lively

:03:36. > :03:38.high street at lunchtime, today people and businesses stopped as

:03:39. > :03:43.Captain Thomas Clarke made his final journey through Cowbridge. Captain

:03:44. > :03:48.Thomas Clarke was one of five people killed when their helicopter came

:03:49. > :03:51.down in Afghanistan last month. His popularity at home and within the

:03:52. > :03:58.Armed Forces was clear by the turnout today. Popular,

:03:59. > :04:03.entertaining, a very good sportsman and widely respected as a talented

:04:04. > :04:10.pilot and a good officer. It's a great loss that we've lost him now.

:04:11. > :04:14.As the funeral cortege reached the war memorial in Cowbridge,

:04:15. > :04:24.standard-bearers from the Royal British Legion lowered their flags.

:04:25. > :04:31.Family, friends and colleagues packed into the church. Dozens took

:04:32. > :04:41.their place outside to join the ceremony. They heard tales of a

:04:42. > :04:46.30-year-old described by friends as a popular rugby player and a very

:04:47. > :04:50.proud Welshman. He was somebody who always lit up the room, always had a

:04:51. > :04:56.great smile, a great story of the work he carried out. Somebody who

:04:57. > :05:03.you could sit and listen to four hours. He could hold a room. After

:05:04. > :05:09.the ceremony, a Lynx helicopter flew past the church. It was similar to

:05:10. > :05:12.the one Captain Thomas Clarke, as well as Lance Corporal Oliver Thomas

:05:13. > :05:22.from Brecon, were travelling in when they died. As the cortege left the

:05:23. > :05:27.church, applause broke out. On an emotional day, a final spontaneous

:05:28. > :05:32.tribute from a town united in grief for a young man whose life was

:05:33. > :05:36.tragically cut short. A second man has been charged with

:05:37. > :05:39.indecent assault as part of an investigation into historical child

:05:40. > :05:47.abuse in the care system in North Wales. The man, who is 62 and from

:05:48. > :05:52.Wrexham, has been charged as part of an ongoing operation with two

:05:53. > :05:58.offences against a boy aged 13 and 16 in the 1980s. He is due in court

:05:59. > :06:02.next month. Dureau is at the Clash on my trial have been shown images

:06:03. > :06:08.of the mine after the disaster. Images were shown including those

:06:09. > :06:13.showing pit props in the Chamber where thousands of gallons of water

:06:14. > :06:15.rushed through. The former pit manager and the owners deny

:06:16. > :06:20.manslaughter charges in the case, which continues.

:06:21. > :06:24.It has emerged that the managing director of Murco in the UK, Thomas

:06:25. > :06:28.McKinlay, has taken a leave of absence from the company in order to

:06:29. > :06:33.work on a deal to continue operating the refinery at Milford Haven. The

:06:34. > :06:37.refinery faces closure with the threat of 400 job losses unless a

:06:38. > :06:40.buyer can be found. Thomas MacKinlay and a number of companies are

:06:41. > :06:44.believed to be interested in buying the site.

:06:45. > :06:48.Teaching unions have tonight welcomed a report that recommends a

:06:49. > :06:54.ten year vision for one of the Welsh Government's flagship education

:06:55. > :06:59.policies. An independent assessment of the Foundation Phase, which

:07:00. > :07:01.focuses on teaching three-year-olds to seven-year-olds through play

:07:02. > :07:05.recommends more teacher training and the need to share best practice

:07:06. > :07:08.between schools. More now on Ryan Giggs who has

:07:09. > :07:23.announced his retirement from the game. He's won 13 league titles,

:07:24. > :07:29.four FA Cup and named named assistant manager. We didn't expect

:07:30. > :07:37.him to ring from his holiday because we knew it was in the pipeline that

:07:38. > :07:40.he might have the job. He was going away to think about it and then he

:07:41. > :07:45.rang this morning to say it was going to be announced and he had

:07:46. > :07:49.taken the job. Wales' hopes of qualifying for the

:07:50. > :07:56.European under 21 championship have suffered a blow tonight eight --

:07:57. > :08:00.despite a goal. They lost to England re-won at the Liberty Stadium.

:08:01. > :08:04.Moving is a stressful business at the best of times so imagine trying

:08:05. > :08:08.to shift aid to shift a 2-term glass lens from an island lighthouse. With

:08:09. > :08:13.the help of a helicopter, that was the challenge this morning as this

:08:14. > :08:16.old Optic was dismantled and taken back to the mainland to be placed in

:08:17. > :08:26.a visitors centre. Time for the weather now.

:08:27. > :08:30.It has been a strange day as far as the weather is concerned. We have

:08:31. > :08:34.seen some brightness and sunny spells but plenty of heavy showers.

:08:35. > :08:40.Some of those are continuing and there is the odd rumble of thunder

:08:41. > :08:44.in Cardiff. Showers moving to the north tonight. Again, heavy and

:08:45. > :08:48.thundery potentially, but drying up across much of the country before

:08:49. > :08:54.another band of showers comes in from the south-east. It will be

:08:55. > :09:00.quite muddy with temperatures at 11 in Fishguard, 12 in rail and 14 in

:09:01. > :09:05.Cardiff and Newport tonight. Another band of showers makes its way to the

:09:06. > :09:10.North tomorrow morning and if we take a look that the rest of the

:09:11. > :09:13.UK, a mixed bag. Low pressure to the north means strong winds across

:09:14. > :09:17.parts of western Scotland and the Western Isles but some brightness.

:09:18. > :09:20.Southeastern parts of England and the Midlands are seeing the best of

:09:21. > :09:26.any brightness and the highest temperatures. The South West of

:09:27. > :09:30.England is fairly similar to Wales. Sunshine and heavy showers.

:09:31. > :09:35.Temperatures reaching 20 or 21. Strong winds on the coast tomorrow.

:09:36. > :09:40.In particular Pembrokeshire and the Flint Peninsula. Wednesday is

:09:41. > :09:46.probably a better day. -- the Llyn peninsular. Low pressure very much

:09:47. > :09:49.in charge of the weather at the moment so it will be fairly

:09:50. > :09:53.unsettled. Thank you. John Humphrys makes a

:09:54. > :09:58.poignant journey to his hometown of Cardiff in search of his Welsh

:09:59. > :10:02.ancestry next tonight. Thanks for watching. Good night.
