:00:00. > :00:18.European elections. There is a first look at the papers on
:00:19. > :00:22.The UKIP leader Nigel Farage says his party's single most remarkable
:00:23. > :00:27.achievement last night was coming close to beating Labour in Wales.
:00:28. > :00:31.Labour topped the European election poll by just 4,000 votes.
:00:32. > :00:36.It means both parties retain a Welsh seat in the European parliament -
:00:37. > :00:39.as do the Conservatives and Plaid Cymru.
:00:40. > :00:46.Here's our political editor Nick Servini.
:00:47. > :00:54.Intense faces at the main count in Fishguard show how tight it was. Did
:00:55. > :01:00.UKIP candidate hoped he would top the poll. In the end, he was still
:01:01. > :01:04.jubilant after sending shock waves by coming second. Labour's Derek
:01:05. > :01:10.Vaughan insisted it was the party's best ever Euro campaign. The Tories
:01:11. > :01:16.and Plaid Cymru were both at risk of losing a seat. In the end, it really
:01:17. > :01:19.for them because the four parties representing Wales in Europe stay
:01:20. > :01:24.the same. But look beyond that, there were big changes. Labour
:01:25. > :01:30.topped the poll but it was short of votes for the second seat the party
:01:31. > :01:34.wanted. Look how close UKIP was to beating Labour. About half a
:01:35. > :01:39.percentage point off the top spot. The Conservatives have slid back
:01:40. > :01:46.from five years ago when they came first. Plaid Cymru faced speculation
:01:47. > :01:52.that they looked vulnerable. UKIP picked up support in all parts of
:01:53. > :01:57.Wales. This whole border with England now UKIP. Labour retained
:01:58. > :02:01.their stronghold in the South. UKIP topped the polls across Britain but
:02:02. > :02:06.for the party's leader there was still a highlight. The single most
:02:07. > :02:11.remarkable result last night was in Wales, where UKIP was a few thousand
:02:12. > :02:15.votes away from beating the Labour Party in Wales. Labour and the
:02:16. > :02:19.Conservatives admit a clear message has been sent to the main parties.
:02:20. > :02:33.They are confident their supporters will return to them in the general
:02:34. > :02:35.election. I really do not believe that the people of Wales want the
:02:36. > :02:38.sort of policies that UKIP are offering. They do not want to get
:02:39. > :02:42.rid of the NHS which is what UKIP are suggesting. It would be churlish
:02:43. > :02:48.to say it was not a good night for UKIP. Let's not forget that less
:02:49. > :02:51.than a third of the electorate voted in this campaign. The Lib Dems came
:02:52. > :02:56.in sixth behind the Greens. Plaid Cymru were comfortably ahead of both
:02:57. > :03:02.of them with a strong showing in some of their core areas. We worked
:03:03. > :03:07.very hard. Our members knocked on thousands of doors and we took on
:03:08. > :03:12.UKIP as well. I think those two things has enabled us to retain our
:03:13. > :03:15.seat. How much has the political landscape changed in Wales as a
:03:16. > :03:20.result of what happened here last night? Things will be very different
:03:21. > :03:24.in the general election next year. One thing we do know now and that is
:03:25. > :03:29.UKIP is more than capable of taking votes away from not just the Tories
:03:30. > :03:35.but across the political spectrum. And particularly from Labour.
:03:36. > :03:38.The Queen?s Baton Relay continued its week long journey through Wales
:03:39. > :03:41.today, with a visit to the Urdd Eisteddfod in Bala.
:03:42. > :03:44.Former Olympic athlete Iwan Thomas was greeted by cheering crowds and,
:03:45. > :03:46.finally some sunshine, as he carried the baton at
:03:47. > :04:01.Matthew Richards has spent the day following it.
:04:02. > :04:09.Ewan Thomas swapped the running version of the relay as he joined 19
:04:10. > :04:15.young people from across the country to help the Queen's baton along for
:04:16. > :04:19.its first visit across Wales. They are all into their sport, not just
:04:20. > :04:23.the children carrying it but the people seeing it get to touch it. A
:04:24. > :04:30.lot of kids today get a bad rap. They are not all bad. What they need
:04:31. > :04:34.is a bit of fire in their belly. These teenagers have grown up with
:04:35. > :04:37.the Urdd Eisteddfod and have been chosen for going the extra mile in
:04:38. > :04:43.playing everything from badminton and netball, to volunteering in
:04:44. > :04:48.their local communities. I could not believe all my hours of volunteering
:04:49. > :04:55.paid off to get this experience today. I do a lot of volunteering
:04:56. > :05:07.with Cubs. We have been camping overnight but it is all worth it to
:05:08. > :05:15.be here today. The Urdd Eisteddfod is in Bala today. It is a pleasure
:05:16. > :05:19.to support team Wales. Wales can be represented in the Commonwealth
:05:20. > :05:26.Games. It gives people the chance to go to a major tournament. The mascot
:05:27. > :05:31.Clyde made sure his arrival was noticed at the festival today. It is
:05:32. > :05:37.two months until the games begin but the build-up is underway. The Queens
:05:38. > :05:41.baton relay will hand over to Carmarthenshire tomorrow.
:05:42. > :05:45.Now after decades of searching, the first and only moving footage of
:05:46. > :05:49.It's been confirmed by experts that this is the poet,
:05:50. > :05:52.circled on your screen now, when he appeared as an extra in the
:05:53. > :05:56.feature film Pandora And The Flying Dutchman on Pendine Sands in 1951.
:05:57. > :05:58.It's a fleeting glimpse but it?s the only archive footage
:05:59. > :06:05.And we'll have the full story of how Dylan Thomas was spotted in the
:06:06. > :06:08.crowds of that film tomorrow evening on Wales Today, and there's much
:06:09. > :06:17.After a sunny bank holiday Monday for most, let's take a look
:06:18. > :06:26.at the weather forecast for Wales with Behnaz Akghar.
:06:27. > :06:32.After a decent day, the weather turning more and settled tonight.
:06:33. > :06:36.There will be a little bit of brightness in between the showers as
:06:37. > :06:43.well. Tonight, we do have a band of rain making its way in from the
:06:44. > :06:47.east, gradually heading westwards. It could be heavy at times and mixed
:06:48. > :06:51.with hail or thunder as well. Low pressure does remain in charge of
:06:52. > :06:57.our weather through tomorrow and over the coming days. With that
:06:58. > :07:01.comes the showers and rain. There will be a bit of brightness as well.
:07:02. > :07:12.The showers come rolling in from the east. The showers could be heavy at
:07:13. > :07:15.times. The winds, light to moderate. It is remaining changeable as we
:07:16. > :07:18.head towards the end of the week that I am hopeful for something more
:07:19. > :07:20.subtle by the time we get to next weekend.
:07:21. > :07:24.Jeremy Paxman's got Newsnight starting over on BBC Two now with a
:07:25. > :07:46.The month of May is often thought of as the transition from Spring into
:07:47. > :07:47.summer. It can have a variety of weather. We've seen
