:00:57. > :01:06.tonight's game will decide who's on the plane to South Africa.

:01:07. > :01:12.Good evening. After a week travelling across the country, the

:01:13. > :01:25.batons journey in Wales ends here in the

:01:26. > :01:33.The man in charge of a Welsh hospital where people were said to

:01:34. > :01:36.be regularly dying while waiting for heart surgery says cardiac

:01:37. > :01:40.Last year, the Royal College of Surgeons told BBC Wales heart

:01:41. > :01:44.patients at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff were waiting too

:01:45. > :01:48.Now it says there's still some way to go, but services have improved.

:01:49. > :02:07.forests Anthony is recovering from a triple bypass operation at the

:02:08. > :02:13.University Hospital of Wales. He waited eight months. Within the

:02:14. > :02:19.nine-month target. He is happy with his treatment. That was worried.

:02:20. > :02:23.Last year, senior surgeons said people were regularly dying while

:02:24. > :02:30.waiting for is heart surgery at the hospital. It did play on my mind,

:02:31. > :02:38.yes. It does play on your mind. You are waiting for a bypass. It does

:02:39. > :02:41.play on your mind. Last year, the Royal College of surgeons told BBC

:02:42. > :02:46.Wales it was concerned that in five years, 152 patients died while

:02:47. > :02:55.waiting for heart surgery in South Wales. The figure was later revised

:02:56. > :02:58.down to around 100. It also said cardiac waiting times at the

:02:59. > :03:04.University Hospital of Wales were a serious patient safety issue.

:03:05. > :03:10.Welcome to Wales today. Our top story, services are dangerous,

:03:11. > :03:19.according to surgeons. The story was headline news across the country.

:03:20. > :03:23.And a hot topic in Parliament. There are people on NHS waiting lists who

:03:24. > :03:27.are dying in Wales because the waiting lists are too long. But now

:03:28. > :03:30.the Royal College of surgeons says while there is still substantial

:03:31. > :03:35.work to do, there have been improvements. We have also reduced

:03:36. > :03:43.the number of people waiting much longer than they should. The 36

:03:44. > :03:46.weight lists have dropped by a half. Our plan is to secure a pathway for

:03:47. > :03:51.patients so that they have surgery much more quickly. The Royal Oak

:03:52. > :03:56.says there still are concerns about delays in cardiac patient care, with

:03:57. > :04:03.some operations being made more competent to do two patients'

:04:04. > :04:06.conditions getting worse. I am concerned that I think everyone is

:04:07. > :04:12.concerned about the length of the waiting lists. But we are waiting

:04:13. > :04:18.with -- working hard to reduce waiting lists. Cardiac surgery is

:04:19. > :04:29.now being carried out on the weekend. Old surgery equipment has

:04:30. > :04:32.been replaced. The Royal College of surgeons says it will continue to

:04:33. > :04:40.take an interest in the health board surgical services. The board accepts

:04:41. > :04:41.it has a long way to go but says it is moving forward.

:04:42. > :04:45.it has a long way to go but says it is moving forward.

:04:46. > :04:47.A yacht club has been fined ?40,000 after an 11-year-old girl

:04:48. > :04:50.suffered brain damage when two boats crashed in Cardiff Bay.

:04:51. > :04:52.Two teenage instructors who weren't qualified

:04:53. > :04:55.for night driving were carrying 13 girls when they collided, throwing

:04:56. > :04:59.Cardiff Bay Yacht Club admitted two offences, and their chief

:05:00. > :05:01.instructor has been ordered to carry out community service.

:05:02. > :05:07.Matthew Murray is in the Bay for us tonight.

:05:08. > :05:13.This accident happened nearly four years ago.

:05:14. > :05:16.A sailing instructor has narrowly avoided going to prison

:05:17. > :05:17.after breaching health and safety regulations

:05:18. > :05:20.which led to two high-powered motor boats crashing in Cardiff Bay,

:05:21. > :05:24.Nicholas Sawyer must now undertake 180 hours of community work.

:05:25. > :05:27.While the owners of the boats, Cardiff Bay Yacht Club,

:05:28. > :05:33.Cardiff Bay yacht club had an unblemished record until this

:05:34. > :05:38.accident. Today, the judge said the club should have prohibited the use

:05:39. > :05:49.of the boats that were involved in the collision. The club were fined

:05:50. > :05:52.?40,000. This was an isolated lapse at a club with an excellent health

:05:53. > :05:57.and safety record. We have made a number of improvements to ensure

:05:58. > :06:02.that such an incident could not happen again. The club was pleased

:06:03. > :06:07.that the judge accepted the incident had been taken very seriously by the

:06:08. > :06:11.club, that we had commended all the recommendations of the various

:06:12. > :06:15.enquiries that were made. The boats were being used to return a group of

:06:16. > :06:19.children home after attending a course. It was here at Cardiff Bay

:06:20. > :06:25.yacht club where the boat set off on a relatively short journey but it

:06:26. > :06:31.was night-time and the boats did not have navigation lights. Two of the

:06:32. > :06:34.vessels were also being operated by 17-year-old girls who did not have

:06:35. > :06:39.the correct modifications. Those boats collided and an 11-year-old

:06:40. > :06:44.girl was thrown into the water. She suffered brain damage and two other

:06:45. > :06:48.children were also injured. The two girls were cleared of any wrongdoing

:06:49. > :06:51.in a previous hearing. Today, a judge ruled it was a responsibility

:06:52. > :06:56.of the chief instructor of the group, Nicholas Sawyer. He had

:06:57. > :06:59.arranged for the boats to be used and allow the girls to operate the

:07:00. > :07:06.vessels. He was ordered to undertake 180 hours of community service.

:07:07. > :07:10.Nicholas Sawyer is relieved that this matter is now concluded. He

:07:11. > :07:15.accepts the sentence arising from a regrettable accident which he has

:07:16. > :07:21.always accepted responsibility for and will always regret. It was

:07:22. > :07:28.Nicholas Sawyer 's reputation and record is in a structure which saw

:07:29. > 3:22:55him narrowly avoid prison. The court heard today that Nicholas Sawyer 's

3:22:56 > 0:00:37career has seen him teach thousands of children
