:01:58. > :02:01.around 2,000 surviving veterans who joined world leaders to honour
:02:02. > :02:04.the bravery of those involved. After meeting some of the veterans,
:02:05. > :02:07.the First Minister Carwyn Jones said that we owe them a debt
:02:08. > :02:09.of gratitude. For many of the men, today's
:02:10. > :02:12.commemoration was seen as their last opportunity to remember their fallen
:02:13. > :02:16.colleagues on such a large scale. We can join our reporter
:02:17. > :02:32.Abigail Neal who is in the town of The commemorations are continuing
:02:33. > :02:38.tonight. There are small services going on up and down this coastline.
:02:39. > :02:54.This is one of two beaches that British forces landed on in 1944.
:02:55. > :03:08.And world leaders were over a clear duty to play homage. -- were over

:03:46. > :03:52.ceremony of remembrance. They were such brave men 70 years ago. It is
:03:53. > :03:57.difficult to imagine what it must have been like for them. For them to
:03:58. > :04:05.come back here, I am sure was emotional.
:04:06. > :04:09.The veterans are heroes here. Everyone wants to stop and talk. It
:04:10. > :04:31.is great to see the recognition that they get from everyone. We all these
:04:32. > :04:41.people a tremendous debt. This man was given the special celebrity
:04:42. > :04:53.treatment. I can't get over it. It is fantastic. We were just ordinary
:04:54. > :05:21.people when we came over in 1944. We had to do it. We survived.
:05:22. > :05:32.The speech took international centre stage this afternoon. -- this beach.
:05:33. > :05:37.There are 18 heads of state here. This will be the last major
:05:38. > :05:52.anniversary where they will be able to see that the world was here. It
:05:53. > :06:00.is important to remember that Welsh people surfed on D-Day in many
:06:01. > :06:38.different ways. -- many people did surface on D-Day -- many people
:06:39. > :06:45.served in many ways. I joined by one of the veterans now.
:06:46. > :07:15.What does it mean to have been part of this? I owed this to them.
:07:16. > :07:29.It makes you feel proud. It brings it all back. I can't
:07:30. > :07:33.describe it. You were on a vessel that was
:07:34. > :07:53.torpedoed. Is that the most poignant part? Yes. I always wanted to throw
:07:54. > :07:58.a wreath in the Channel. This will be the last large-scale and
:07:59. > :08:08.adversity. How do you feel about that? Has it been a fitting tribute?
:08:09. > :08:16.Definitely. It will still be remembered in some way or other. The
:08:17. > :08:34.appreciation of the French people, you will never forget it. Submitted
:08:35. > :09:01.by everyone. -- saluted by everyone. Yes.
:09:02. > :09:04.One veteran from Monmouthshire has had a school named after him not far
:09:05. > :09:08.from here, after decades of work to tell school children about the war.
:09:09. > :09:11.89 year old David Edwards saw action just after D-Day.
:09:12. > :09:33.They had no idea of danger. The Germans had zeroed in. They were
:09:34. > :09:39.involved in pushing the Germans out of Normandy. In the rubble of a
:09:40. > :09:48.building they found this photograph. He kept it until 1986
:09:49. > :09:55.when he returned to the ADR. -- when he returns to the area.
:09:56. > :10:09.It was this man's house in the picture. I am very happy that he
:10:10. > :10:26.triggers for thought. -- I am very happy that he took this photograph.
:10:27. > :10:37.David has helped with school exchanges for decades.
:10:38. > :10:55.In 2002 the local school was named after two of the veterans who had
:10:56. > :11:03.helped to liberate the town. He can still talk about it. It is very
:11:04. > :11:15.important. If he had never picked up that photographed -- photograph,
:11:16. > :11:26.these children could have missed out on finding out what D-Day was all
:11:27. > :11:35.about. We have found some of the veterans
:11:36. > :11:42.who have joined us. We have been reflecting on some of the stories.
:11:43. > :11:50.Many of these veterans have been back many times since. After this
:11:51. > :11:57.year this will be the last remembrance on this scale.
:11:58. > :12:00.To the day's other news now and the Operation Pallial team investigating
:12:01. > :12:04.historical child sex abuse in North Wales has charged a further six men.
:12:05. > :12:07.They are due to appear before magistrates in Mold next week.
:12:08. > :12:10.They're accused of a total of 27 serious sexual assaults
:12:11. > :12:12.against two boys under 16 in Wrexham in the 1980s.
:12:13. > :12:15.Roger Pinney joins us now from North Wales Police headquarters
:12:16. > :12:31.Roger how significant a development is this?
:12:32. > :12:53.This operation has been looking back since 2012. A total of 27 charges
:12:54. > :13:04.will be brought. We have the names of five of those who have been
:13:05. > :13:13.charged. The sixth person has not been named.
:13:14. > :13:27.The investigation is in its second year. Will this be the end of it?
:13:28. > :13:34.This is just the start of it. The guilt or innocence will be decided
:13:35. > :13:42.by the court. The Operation Pallial team has taken statements from more
:13:43. > :13:49.than 200 people. This still has some way to run yet.

:14:14. > :14:17.to be investigated by the Auditor General, over concerns about the way
:14:18. > :14:21.Earlier this year a leaked confidential report said the company
:14:22. > :14:27.was facing a crisis among its managers and board of directors.
:14:28. > :14:30.Well our arts and media correspondent Huw Thomas
:14:31. > :14:33.Huw - what has prompted the request to the auditor?
:14:34. > :14:37.You mentioned the crisis there - and that was the damning conclusion
:14:38. > :14:40.of the confidential report that was commissioned by the Arts Council
:14:41. > :14:42.last year, and followed a huge falling out
:14:43. > :14:46.The Arts Council provides around 85% of the Dance Company's
:14:47. > :14:52.annual income - around ?850,000 this year - and the dancers themselves
:14:53. > :14:55.have carried on performing and touring while the crisis has
:14:56. > :15:03.It led to the resignations of the artistic director who founded
:15:04. > :15:06.the company 30 years ago, and five of the eight board members quit -
:15:07. > :15:10.with one of those going on to call for the chairman to resign as well.
:15:11. > :15:16.I've also learned that in recent months the Dance Company
:15:17. > :15:19.has been given an extra ?40,000 by the Arts Council -
:15:20. > :15:26.money the company says is to help recruit a new artistic director,
:15:27. > :15:29.and to pay for consultants who'll help take the business forward.
:15:30. > :15:31.But Plaid's culture spokesperson Bethan Jenkins says the situation
:15:32. > :15:44.There are questions that need to be answered with regard to how the
:15:45. > :15:51.dance company has moved forward since the review. Many of the former
:15:52. > :15:58.board members dispute the contents of that report. That is why I wrote
:15:59. > :16:04.to the auditor general to ask that he looks into this matter so that
:16:05. > :16:11.they can get to the root of the problem.
:16:12. > :16:16.It's planning to recruit a brand new management and board
:16:17. > :16:19.in the autumn - and the extra money will help with that.
