:00:19. > :00:22.Veterans from Wales have been in France to mark the 70th

:00:23. > :00:26.After meeting those who served, First Minister Carwyn Jones said we

:00:27. > :00:44.Leaders, veterans and citizens from across the globe, he had to remember

:00:45. > :00:51.the price we paid in a country we liberated.

:00:52. > :01:04.The First Minister was at a ceremony to honour the 3935 British soldiers

:01:05. > :01:09.killed jawing the Normandy campaign. It is very impressive. Afterwards, a

:01:10. > :01:16.chance to catch up with one of the Welsh veterans. It great honour to

:01:17. > :01:20.be here representing Wales, and an even greater honour to be in the

:01:21. > :01:25.company of such great men who, here 70 years ago, on the beaches, very

:01:26. > :01:29.difficult now for us to imagine what it must've been like for them. But

:01:30. > :01:33.for them to come back is exceptionally emotional. And it has

:01:34. > :01:37.been a remarkable event. The veterans heroes here. Everyone wants

:01:38. > :01:47.to stop, chat, and have an autograph. 19 the -- 90 old Gordon

:01:48. > :01:55.was a dispatch rider. He was given a special celebrity treatment.

:01:56. > :02:04.I can't get over it. It's fantastic! People want to take photographs.

:02:05. > :02:09.It's embarrassing. We were just ordinary lads when we came in 1944.

:02:10. > :02:15.We had to get on with the job. People say, were you scared? Of

:02:16. > :02:19.course we were scared. Anyone who wasn't scared was an idiot. Some of

:02:20. > :02:30.us survived, thank God we are still here today. Sword Beach on D-Day

:02:31. > :02:36.took international centre stage this afternoon. Everyone who was anyone

:02:37. > :02:39.was here. There were 18 heads of state and 7,000 people watching for

:02:40. > :02:47.the biggest D-Day, narration the world has ever seen. -- D-Day, Ray.

:02:48. > :02:53.We caught up with Gordon. The last time to show his family where he

:02:54. > :03:03.fought. It is a good way to show them where I served. I have some way

:03:04. > :03:07.to go yet. I remember it all. Away from centre stage, there are dozens

:03:08. > :03:13.of smaller ceremonies and parades happening across Normandy.

:03:14. > :03:18.88-year-old Eddie Linton lost 90 comrades when his frigate was hit by

:03:19. > :03:24.a U-boat. Like the 1,000 other veterans today, it is their bravery

:03:25. > :03:28.and sacrifice he will never forget. The Normandy veterans Association is

:03:29. > :03:32.disbanding and this'll be the last major commemoration. Today we are

:03:33. > :03:39.able to say that the world was here, paying homage to the men who

:03:40. > :03:42.fought our freedom. -- fought for our freedom.

:03:43. > :03:44.The former Welsh Secretary, Peter Hain, has announced this

:03:45. > :03:47.evening that he's standing down at the next general election.

:03:48. > :03:51.Mr Hain, who's the MP for Neath, said it had been a privilege to

:03:52. > :03:53.serve his constituency for nearly a quarter of a century,

:03:54. > :04:03.I've been in politics for nearly 50 years. All my life, really. I'm not

:04:04. > :04:08.going to go away. I'm going to fight for Neath. I will live here, and I

:04:09. > :04:12.want to fight for Labour and the support Ed Miliband. And I can do

:04:13. > :04:18.that in all sorts of different ways. It's been a tough decision because I

:04:19. > :04:22.am very close to Neath. I am very privileged to have represented this

:04:23. > :04:24.constituency and done all I've done in government as well and I will

:04:25. > :04:26.fight for Labour in the future. Our Political Editor Nick

:04:27. > :04:28.Servini is with me. So tell us about this decision.

:04:29. > :04:37.A surprise? It was a surprise. He was due to

:04:38. > :04:41.stand for election at the general election next year in Neath, and we

:04:42. > :04:45.were filming with him this week to mark 15 years since the start of

:04:46. > :04:49.devolution, and there was no indication that this is what he was

:04:50. > :04:57.planning. The big question is what will he do in the future? As that

:04:58. > :05:00.interview indicates, he certainly wants to remain in politics. I

:05:01. > :05:05.thought his statement earlier was interesting because he said it was

:05:06. > :05:09.time to find new ways to represent the new progressive politics to

:05:10. > :05:13.which he and Ed Miliband, the Labour leader, are committed. The fact he

:05:14. > :05:17.has consulted so closely with Ed Miliband would suggest that an

:05:18. > :05:20.opportunity and a future career opportunity in the House of Lords

:05:21. > :05:24.would be a possibility. We specifically asked him about that

:05:25. > :05:32.tonight but he is refusing to speculate on that. He has been a big

:05:33. > :05:37.hit in Welsh politics for decades. Very high profile. Many people

:05:38. > :05:40.became aware of him as a prominent anti-apartheid campaigner. And in

:05:41. > :05:47.those protests against high-profile rugby and cricket tours to South

:05:48. > :05:50.Africa in the apartheid era, he is from South Africa originally. He has

:05:51. > :05:57.been the MP for Neath for 23 years, Welsh Secretary in the 1997

:05:58. > :06:01.referendum campaign, he has been Work and Pensions minister, and

:06:02. > :06:06.probably outside of Wales 's most prominent role was as Northern

:06:07. > :06:11.Ireland Secretary in the period of 2005-2007, which coincided with a

:06:12. > :06:14.historic decommissioning process by the IRA. Thank you.

:06:15. > :06:17.Six men have been charged with a total of 27 serious sexual

:06:18. > :06:20.assault charges in an investigation into historical abuse in

:06:21. > :06:23.They?re due to appear before magistrates next week.

:06:24. > :06:25.The offences are alleged to have taken place

:06:26. > :06:32.against two boys under 16, between 1981 and 1986, in Wrexham.

:06:33. > :06:35.The aircraft manufacturer, Airbus, has admitted it failed to ensure the

:06:36. > :06:38.health and safety of its employees at its factory in Broughton.

:06:39. > :06:41.The charge followed the death in 2011 of Donald Williams

:06:42. > :06:46.An earlier inquest heard he'd been crushed by a tractor at the end

:06:47. > :06:53.The company will be sentenced next month.

:06:54. > :06:56.The head teacher and another member of staff at a Swansea secondary

:06:57. > :06:59.school have resigned after what appeared to be a sex tape

:07:00. > :07:04.Graham Daniels was suspended from Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Bryn Tawe,

:07:05. > :07:07.along with another member of staff, after a complaint about the video.

:07:08. > :07:10.The school says the resignations are not necessarily linked to

:07:11. > :07:21.Cricket and a great wind for Glamorgan in the T20 Blast.

:07:22. > :07:24.They beat Somerset to wind by seven runs.

:07:25. > :07:29.It's their third wind on the bounce in the competition.

:07:30. > :07:31.The defending Commonwealth Champion Dai Greene

:07:32. > :07:34.will lead Wales' athletics team at the Games in Glasgow next month.

:07:35. > :07:38.The 400m hurdler from Llanelli, who took gold in Delhi, is one of 27

:07:39. > :07:42.The London 2012 medallist Aled Davies will head a six-strong

:07:43. > :07:51.Well, some heavy rain forecast for tomorrow.

:07:52. > :07:53.Derek has all the details in the weekend forecast.

:07:54. > :07:58.The humidity is rising and trouble is brewing with some heavy rain and

:07:59. > :08:03.But it's not going to be a total wash-out this weekend, I can

:08:04. > :08:08.Dry for most of us tonight, although I wouldn't rule out

:08:09. > :08:12.You may see a few flashes of lightning.

:08:13. > :08:20.Tomorrow, we have a Met Office warning in force which covers most

:08:21. > :08:22.of Wales, apart from the south-west and Pembrokeshire.

:08:23. > :08:26.It might start off dry in the North, but thundery rain will spread

:08:27. > :08:32.Could be some torrential rain in places, too.

:08:33. > :08:35.Across the rest of the UK, thundery rain will spread northwards

:08:36. > :08:39.during today, torrential rain in places with a risk of hail

:08:40. > :08:43.and gusty winds, flash flooding a possibility but not everywhere.

:08:44. > :08:48.The far north of Scotland is staying fine and dry.

:08:49. > :08:50.And drier, brighter weather will spread from the south-west

:08:51. > :08:53.across the southern half of the UK during the afternoon.

:08:54. > :08:57.A high of 22 Celsius in London will feel quite muggy.

:08:58. > :09:00.Tomorrow afternoon in Wales at 3pm, the worst

:09:01. > :09:04.There will be a few showers dotted around.

:09:05. > :09:07.But more in the way of dry weather, some sunshine as well,

:09:08. > :09:14.Some sunshine tomorrow evening, just one or two showers.

:09:15. > :09:16.And after midnight a few more showers

:09:17. > :09:25.You may catch a heavy shower but, on the whole, plenty of dry

:09:26. > :09:28.weather, there will be sunny spells and it will feel pleasantly warm.

:09:29. > :09:31.So, heavy rain and thunderstorms clearing tomorrow.

:09:32. > :09:34.Sunday the best day of the weekend, and it's looking

:09:35. > :09:43.Next week on Wales Today, we'll be asking has devolution improved

:09:44. > :09:48.To mark the National Assembly's 15th birthday, every day next week we'll

:09:49. > :09:50.look at whether delivered a stronger economy,

:09:51. > :10:00.That is Wales Today. We are back at 6:50am tomorrow, but from all of us
