:03:46. > :03:48.and Cambridge a network of hubs should be set up.
:03:49. > :03:51.That's the finding of a report, which showed that Welsh students
:03:52. > :03:53.are less likely to get a place than their peers
:03:54. > :03:59.Here's our education correspondent, Arwyn Jones.
:04:00. > :04:02.They are as well-known for the boat race on as they are
:04:03. > :04:05.Oxford and Cambridge's reputation for
:04:06. > :04:08.outstanding teaching and research mean only the very best get in.
:04:09. > :04:10.But fewer pupils from Wales are excepted than
:04:11. > :04:18.In 2008, just under 400 pupils from Wales applied for Oxford,
:04:19. > :04:23.But last year, whereas the numbers applying had
:04:24. > :04:30.It means that around 17% of Welsh pupils who tried got in.
:04:31. > :04:36.Today, this man, an Oxford graduate and Welsh MP,
:04:37. > :04:40.said we need more support for our most talented pupils.
:04:41. > :04:44.He wants to see 12 hubs across Wales that will coax them to help get
:04:45. > :04:49.Bring them together, and they will realise there are
:04:50. > :04:54.And that the issue of getting that peer group together
:04:55. > :04:59.is hugely important in overcoming the lack of aspiration
:05:00. > :05:02.and perhaps more importantly the lack of self-confidence that we
:05:03. > :05:07.Thomas Challinor from Wrexham knows all about that self-confidence.
:05:08. > :05:10.He has just finished his 2nd year studying biology
:05:11. > :05:14.at Oxford, and also goes to schools to tell pupils it is not
:05:15. > :05:19.But, looking back, he remembers how overwhelming it can
:05:20. > :05:25.At the very initial time point, it was very daunting.
:05:26. > :05:28.It wasn't until I actually sat down and did the research that I
:05:29. > :05:31.realised, financially I can afford it, yes I do know I meet
:05:32. > :05:33.the entry requirements, and the course is actually...
:05:34. > :05:36.It does look great for me, and then I felt a lot better about it.
:05:37. > :05:39.So how exactly would the 12 hubs work?
:05:40. > :05:42.These pupils from already benefit from a similar scheme that has
:05:43. > :05:48.Once a week we all meet up and then we will practice
:05:49. > :05:51.for mock interviews, and we look over people's statements.
:05:52. > :05:54.We have to learn how to think critically and not just learn
:05:55. > :05:58.It is a completely different style of thinking,
:05:59. > :06:05.But how easy will it be to replicate that scheme across Wales?
:06:06. > :06:08.You have also got tutors who, in the college,
:06:09. > :06:09.are fundamentally delivering A-levels and nothing else.
:06:10. > :06:13.They know the curriculum, they know the examining boards, they
:06:14. > :06:19.know the admissions tutors, so I think you do need a critical view.
:06:20. > :06:23.The education minister says work should begin wihtout ndelay on
:06:24. > :06:27.a pilot project to set up the new hubs, and while Oxford and Cambridge
:06:28. > :06:30.are clearly not the be-all and end-all, giving our brightest pupils
:06:31. > :06:33.the best chance to study at top adversities is seen as a way
:06:34. > :06:44.The Welsh Ambulance Service says it's investigating its response to a
:06:45. > :06:47.fire in Carmarthen on Sunday, after which a three-year-old girl died.
:06:48. > :06:50.Dyfed Powys Police confirmed that Angel Jade Smith was taken to
