:00:00. > :00:18.That's all from the team here in Glasgow.

:00:19. > :00:20.Hello. After years of training and preparation, Team Wales have begun

:00:21. > :00:26.Welsh athletes walked out with competitors from seventy other

:00:27. > :00:31.nations to mark the opening ceremony of the games in Glasgow.

:00:32. > :00:34.The build up has been dominated with news of leading medal hopes pulling

:00:35. > :00:37.out - but Team Wales say, they can still reach their pre-games

:00:38. > :01:08.It is one of the biggest parties Glasgow has ever thrown. A colourful

:01:09. > :01:15.start to 11 days of competition. It is a night Frankie Jones will never

:01:16. > :01:21.forget. Leading team Wales out. Frankie Jones is leading them out.

:01:22. > :01:25.It is her third and final Commonwealth Games, a series of

:01:26. > :01:39.injuries mean she has been preparing through the pain was a physio was on

:01:40. > :01:42.hand just in case. For many, it was their first taste of the

:01:43. > :01:47.Commonwealth Games. Soon, these athletes would be competing against

:01:48. > :01:52.70 other nations and territories. We have early chances, we have lost hot

:01:53. > :02:00.favourites in triathlon but we still have cyclists going and gymnasts.

:02:01. > :02:07.So, there may be some chances and ten days of this competition. Team

:02:08. > :02:12.Wales will hope the Opening Ceremony will draw a line under a difficult

:02:13. > :02:18.few days. Injuries to medal hopefuls was followed by a drugs charge to

:02:19. > :02:23.one of the athletes. Yesterday, Fred Evans banned from the games because

:02:24. > :02:30.of his criminal record. It gives me the greatest pleasure to declare the

:02:31. > :02:35.20th Commonwealth Games open. So, on a night when Glasgow welcome the

:02:36. > :02:38.games competitions cannot start soon enough for team Wales. The real

:02:39. > :02:41.business of winning medals is about to begin.

:02:42. > :02:43.Police say further charges have been brought against three nurses

:02:44. > :02:45.in connection with the alleged falsification

:02:46. > :02:47.of patients' notes at the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend.

:02:48. > :02:50.It comes as another nurse has been suspended as part of

:02:51. > :02:53.It brings the total number of suspensions from there to 14,

:02:54. > :03:04.with one other from Swansea's Morriston hospital.

:03:05. > :03:08.The Labour MP for Cynon Valley, Ann Clwyd, says she may stand at next

:03:09. > :03:11.In February she announced her intention to stand down, having

:03:12. > :03:16.But she says she's now 'weighing up her options' - Welsh labour says it

:03:17. > :03:19.hasn't been formally approached and is in the process of arranging for a

:03:20. > :03:23.full selection - its plan to use an all women shortlist to select her

:03:24. > :03:31.Three Appeal Court judges have thrown out an attempt by the former

:03:32. > :03:34.Lost Prophets singer, Ian Watkins, against his sentence for a string

:03:35. > :03:43.Watkins was sentenced to 29 years in prison last year.

:03:44. > :03:46.One of his co-defendants also appealed against her jail term.

:03:47. > :03:53.Ian Watkins was jailed last November after admitting 13 child sex

:03:54. > :03:57.offences including the attempted rape of a baby.

:03:58. > :04:00.The former singer with the Lost Prophets was sentenced to

:04:01. > :04:03.a total of 29 years in prison and a further six on licence for

:04:04. > :04:08.a case which the trial judge said "plunged new depths of depravity".

:04:09. > :04:11.Today, neither he nor one of his codefendants, who was jailed for

:04:12. > :04:14.17 years, were in court as their lawyers asked three Appeal Court

:04:15. > :04:29.The QC said the sentence was too high because he pleaded guilty at

:04:30. > :04:31.the start of the trial and his offences were not the worst to ever

:04:32. > :04:32.come before the court. Watkins was sentenced to 15 years

:04:33. > :04:34.for two offences and 14 for another two, which

:04:35. > :04:39.his counsel said was too much. The sentence should have been less

:04:40. > :04:48.for both of them. But the judges disagreed and decided

:04:49. > :05:03.the punishments were appropriate. These were, in our view, offences

:05:04. > :05:10.against infant children of such shocking depravity that a very

:05:11. > :05:15.lengthy sentence of imprisonment was demanded. Notwithstanding the

:05:16. > :05:17.absence of physical injury. Today's decision confirms

:05:18. > :05:18.the earlier sentences. That means Watkins will now have to

:05:19. > :05:21.serve at least 16 years and 10 months in jail before he can

:05:22. > :05:24.be considered for release. A football club in Powys has pleaded

:05:25. > :05:27.guilty to breaching health and safety legislation

:05:28. > :05:30.after a twelve year old boy died Casey Breese from Caersws had

:05:31. > :05:37.been playing with friends when The club admitted responsibility

:05:38. > :05:41.for the posts - A statement was read out

:05:42. > :05:58.on behalf of Casey Breese's family. The change of plea to guilty

:05:59. > :06:02.represents an acceptance by the football club of their involvement

:06:03. > :06:06.with the goalposts that fell and crushed Casey. They are happy with

:06:07. > :06:07.the outcome of the case, losing Casey has been a terrible blow for

:06:08. > :06:10.the family. There are fresh calls

:06:11. > :06:12.for the chief executive of Pembrokeshire Council to be

:06:13. > :06:15.suspended - after police confirmed a new investigation has been

:06:16. > :06:17.launched into payments he received Earlier this year the Wales Audit

:06:18. > :06:22.Office found the payments made to Bryn Parry Jones and another

:06:23. > :06:27.senior officer were unlawful. The first police inquiry found no

:06:28. > :06:31.evidence of criminal offences but This is the man at the centre

:06:32. > :06:39.of this controversy. The Chief Executive of Pembrokeshire

:06:40. > :06:44.Council, Bryn Parry Jones. Back in January the

:06:45. > :06:48.Wales Audit Office ruled cash payments made to him and another

:06:49. > :06:50.senior officer instead of pension Four months later

:06:51. > :06:58.a police investigation concluded there was no evidence to suggest any

:06:59. > :07:04.criminal offence had taken place. And last week the local authority

:07:05. > :07:06.decided not to take any further action to try and reclaim the salary

:07:07. > :07:14.supplements worth more than ?45,000. But in a new twist fresh information

:07:15. > :07:18.has now emerged and a second police Because of the close working

:07:19. > :07:26.relationship between Dyfed Powys Police and Pembrokeshire Council

:07:27. > :07:28.this one will also be carried out It's understood the new information

:07:29. > :07:36.relates to questions over who wrote this confidential document

:07:37. > :07:42.which has been shown to BBC Wales. Written

:07:43. > :07:44.in September 2011 it's a report that recommends that senior staff should

:07:45. > :07:47.be allowed to substitute pension Mr Parry Jones, who earns more

:07:48. > :07:56.than ?220,000 a year is now facing calls to step aside until the

:07:57. > :07:58.police have completed their work. It's very clear

:07:59. > :08:03.if any other member of staff at the council was under investigation

:08:04. > :08:08.they would be suspended from duty. Now that's not us saying he is

:08:09. > :08:11.guilty, that's us saying there is Mr Parry Jones needs to be

:08:12. > :08:17.suspended while those It's only right and proper

:08:18. > :08:21.and it would apply to any other Pembrokeshire Council said it's

:08:22. > :08:24.aware of the new investigation and it will cooperate fully with

:08:25. > :08:26.the police. In the meantime Mr Parry

:08:27. > :08:32.Jones is still in his post. Plans for a giant solar park,

:08:33. > :08:34.with 180 thousand panels, have been given the go ahead

:08:35. > :08:40.by Flintshire councillors. The 270-acre site next to

:08:41. > :08:44.Deeside Industrial Estate WAS earmarked for agricultural use -

:08:45. > :08:47.and objectors argued unsuccessfully that the solar park should be

:08:48. > :08:49.on a brownfield site instead. The firm behind the plans -

:08:50. > :08:54.Swansea based Compton Group - says, the park could generate enough

:08:55. > :08:57.power for 11 thousand homes over Most councils

:08:58. > :09:05.in Wales are making good progress in carrying out measures designed

:09:06. > :09:07.to prevent another ecoli outbreak, The Food Standards Agency was asked

:09:08. > :09:13.to look at how the recommendations of the Pennington inquriy -

:09:14. > :09:18.which examined the 2005 outbreak, when five year old Mason Jones died

:09:19. > :09:33.- have been implemented. The one issued a report picks out

:09:34. > :09:40.for further attention in Wales is the way in which we police food for

:09:41. > :09:45.animals above -- at the start of the food chain and it's important. The

:09:46. > :09:51.quality and safety of the food that ends up on your plate begins right

:09:52. > :09:58.at the start of the process. And now, a look at the weather. Today

:09:59. > :10:06.was the hottest day of the year so far, temperatures nearly reaching 30

:10:07. > :10:10.Celsius. I am terribly sorry. We may be able to return to the weather

:10:11. > :10:17.forecast but I think we may not be able to. Later today, the first team

:10:18. > :10:18.Wales medals could be one on the opening day of the Commonwealth

:10:19. > :10:21.Games. Wales has big hopes in the pool -

:10:22. > :10:24.Jazz Carlin swims The paracyclist Rhiannon Henry goes

:10:25. > :10:27.in the tandem sprint and the Rhythmic Team gymnastics

:10:28. > :10:34.gets underway. Poor broadband and the challenges

:10:35. > :10:42.of running a business in rural Wales were under discussion

:10:43. > :10:45.today at the Royal Welsh Show. Many businesses and homes

:10:46. > :10:47.in more remote parts of Wales are still struggling to get

:10:48. > :10:49.online - BT says, delivering broadband connections across Wales

:10:50. > :10:52.is a massive engineering project and the infrastructure cannot be

:10:53. > :11:11.rolled out overnight. A few have a story we should be

:11:12. > :11:12.covering, get in touch. We would love to hear from you. You can

:11:13. > :11:23.e-mail us. Or you can phone us. We're back in Breakfast from 6

:11:26. > :11:28.weather forecast. That's Wales Today thank you for watching from all of
