:00:00. > :00:14.Welcome to Wales Today. Our top story. Joanna Michael stabbed to

:00:15. > :00:18.death by her boyfriend, waiting to the police to respond to her 999

:00:19. > :00:25.calls. Now her family want to change the law so the police can be sued

:00:26. > :00:28.for negligence. This is an important case with massive consequences for

:00:29. > :00:32.is that if the door opens, it will open for many other people in this

:00:33. > :00:36.country. Why did a protest in the middle of

:00:37. > :00:39.Cardiff turn into this? Tonight, an appeal for video footage to piece

:00:40. > :00:46.together what happened. Downing Street has been asked to do

:00:47. > :00:51.more in the search for Arthur Jones, missing on holiday in Crete.

:00:52. > :00:56.Here at the Commonwealth Games, the medals keep coming. It is not the

:00:57. > :01:03.one he wanted. Aled Sion Davies has to settle for silver in the discus.

:01:04. > :01:07.It is an emotional day for the team captain but some words from his

:01:08. > :01:13.mother helped. I came second and I hope I have not let anyone else

:01:14. > :01:20.down. It has been a historic games for the Welsh gymnastics. I catch up

:01:21. > :01:34.with the trio about the boost they have given the sport back home.

:01:35. > :01:39.Good evening. The family of a woman who was murdered as she waited for

:01:40. > :01:47.the police to respond to her calls the help have taken their case to

:01:48. > :01:51.the Supreme Court. He won the law to be changed to the police can be sued

:01:52. > :01:56.for negligence. Joanna Michael from Cardiff called 99 91 during a

:01:57. > :02:01.dispute with her former boyfriend five years ago.

:02:02. > :02:07.Joanna Michael, a 25-year-old mother, murdered by her boyfriend

:02:08. > :02:17.and her home in Cardiff nearly five years ago. He was sentenced to life

:02:18. > :02:23.imprisonment for stabbing her 92 times. Her children were in the

:02:24. > :02:29.house at the time. They were there and they were real. By the time the

:02:30. > :02:38.police came, it was 30 minutes all in all, she was dead. And she left

:02:39. > :02:48.two children. For years, the family have tried to sue the police for

:02:49. > :02:57.damages. However, the law says that they cannot sue the police for

:02:58. > :02:59.negligence. Joanna's family are challenging that at the Supreme

:03:00. > :03:03.Court today. There are restrictions on what you

:03:04. > :03:08.can do in terms of suing the police. Very strict rejections was up in

:03:09. > :03:12.this case, Joanna was failed abysmally by the police and the

:03:13. > :03:18.family want to hold the police accountable. Families should be able

:03:19. > :03:22.to sue the police for negligence. So why might the police have been

:03:23. > :03:28.negligent? Early in the morning in August 2009, Joanna Rank 999. Her

:03:29. > :03:33.call was diverted to the wrong control room I her local mobile

:03:34. > :03:37.phone mast will stop Gwent police did not take enough details from

:03:38. > :03:40.her. Her local force was South Wales Police was that they did not think

:03:41. > :03:48.it required an immediate response because of the lack of detail passed

:03:49. > :03:53.from Gwent. 15 minutes later, she calls 999 again. This time, she is

:03:54. > :03:55.screaming. She manages to tell them where she is in Cardiff before the

:03:56. > :04:04.line goes dead. South Wales Police then give the call a greater

:04:05. > :04:16.priority. Two officers are sent. Neighbours report a domestic abuse

:04:17. > :04:22.incident and children screaming. When the police arrived, she is

:04:23. > :04:26.found dead. If her family are successful in winning the right to

:04:27. > :04:31.claim for damages, it could be a landmark legal case. They say if you

:04:32. > :04:35.have everyone suing the police, that will not be any good for society. Of

:04:36. > :04:39.course, this is a very important case with massive consequences but

:04:40. > :04:44.if the door opens, it will open for many other people in this country

:04:45. > :04:46.who say the police did that, they did not act swiftly and they failed

:04:47. > :04:52.to protect people. What happens here in the neighbourhood where Joanna

:04:53. > :04:57.used to live and the way the police reacted to it could have a profound

:04:58. > :05:01.effect on the legal system in England and Wales. The supreme court

:05:02. > :05:04.will continue hearing evidence tomorrow all those detailed findings

:05:05. > :05:12.might not be available for some week.

:05:13. > :05:17.-- for some weeks. Three nurses have appeared at

:05:18. > :05:19.Bridgend Magistrates' Court in connection with the wilful

:05:20. > :05:22.negligence of nine patients. Rebecca Jones, Lauro Bertulano and Clare

:05:23. > :05:27.Cahill worked at the Princess of Wales Hospital. It is alleged they

:05:28. > :05:33.failed to look at blood glucose levels and then falsified reports.

:05:34. > :05:36.They are at the due to appear at the Court ex-man.

:05:37. > :05:52.-- next month. Michael Pearce denies murder and an

:05:53. > :05:55.alternative charge of manslaughter. The Food Standards Agency says it

:05:56. > :06:01.has carried out detailed audits of a poultry processing plant on Anglesey

:06:02. > :06:11.after allegations of hygiene failings. It comes after claims by a

:06:12. > :06:18.newspaper at the factory. The initial audit showed the factory to

:06:19. > :06:22.be generally satisfactory. The police are appealing to the

:06:23. > :06:25.public to send in video footage of violent clashes which broke out

:06:26. > :06:30.during a peaceful march in Cardiff on Saturday. The protest as were

:06:31. > :06:34.demonstrating against Israel's military action in Gaza. Questions

:06:35. > :06:39.are being asked about the police handling of the March after

:06:40. > :06:45.protesters had glasses and chairs thrown at them.

:06:46. > :06:50.On a sunny summer afternoon in Cardiff, a peaceful protest against

:06:51. > :06:55.the Israeli operation in Gaza is suddenly confronted by violence.

:06:56. > :07:02.These pictures show tables and chairs being held through the air

:07:03. > :07:05.while abuse is shattered. Police say a small mother people disrupted the

:07:06. > :07:08.march as it made its way through the city.

:07:09. > :07:14.Around 1500 people were on the march on Saturday. When they got to this

:07:15. > :07:17.point, some people in the bars around started throwing glasses,

:07:18. > :07:21.chairs and tables will stop two men who are not connected to the march

:07:22. > :07:26.were arrested by the police but have been released on bail.

:07:27. > :07:30.Judy was on the march. She is a veteran campaigner of more than 30

:07:31. > :07:34.years and says she has never seen anything like it. It upset me

:07:35. > :07:41.because they work women, there were mothers, they were babies in which

:07:42. > :07:48.Jess was up there where elderly people and evil in wheelchairs. A

:07:49. > :07:51.glass was thrown in front of me. The contents were down one side of me.

:07:52. > :07:58.As I turned around, I saw a white man, bald, with tattooed, saying it

:07:59. > :08:02.was for the thing next to me. I said he was a racist and attended the

:08:03. > :08:11.British-born Muslim woman it was aimed at. This man was at the

:08:12. > :08:15.protest. He says it may not have been a targeted attack that it

:08:16. > :08:23.cannot be tolerated. It is not clear whether it is any unorganised

:08:24. > :08:27.presents but people do should be able to protest without fear of

:08:28. > :08:31.violence, assault or intimidation. Unfortunately, there appear to have

:08:32. > :08:35.been a number of ugly incidents on the fringes. Police say they will

:08:36. > :08:40.investigate how the violence started and arrest those involved. The

:08:41. > :08:44.scenes we experience on Saturday are unacceptable. We acknowledge they

:08:45. > :08:50.will be frightening for anyone involved in that. Once we realised

:08:51. > :08:57.the peaceful protest had been disrupted by violence, we got

:08:58. > :09:03.involved. We have allocated a dedicated team of officers to bring

:09:04. > :09:06.the offenders to justice. Police want anyone with any information to

:09:07. > :09:21.contact them. The Wales audit office has confirmed

:09:22. > :09:30.it is looking into the departure of the education representative on

:09:31. > :09:35.Conwy Council. The council says it behaved responsibly.

:09:36. > :09:41.Trojan Electronics will move into a new site at the old Visteon site. It

:09:42. > :09:45.will use a grant from the Welsh government.

:09:46. > :09:48.More areas of Wales will be explored for shale gas. The UK government has

:09:49. > :09:52.opened bidding for licences to go for the gas using the controversial

:09:53. > :09:59.process of fracking. Parts of the North, East and South will be

:10:00. > :10:03.affected. They will only be drilling in national parks and areas of

:10:04. > :10:05.outstanding natural beauty in exceptional circumstances.

:10:06. > :10:09.The family of a pensioner who went missing while on holiday in Crete

:10:10. > :10:12.have asked the promised to do more to help in the search was Arthur

:10:13. > :10:17.Jones has not been seen for more than five weeks. A letter was

:10:18. > :10:27.delivered to David Cameron today urging him to keep his promise to do

:10:28. > :10:30.all he can to help. Arthur Jones's friends say they need

:10:31. > :10:35.to take up David Cameron's offer of help from the Commons. Will the

:10:36. > :10:39.Prime Minister ensure that the FCO continued their great work and

:10:40. > :10:45.co-operate with the Greek government to ensure Arthur is found. I will

:10:46. > :10:52.certainly everything -- I will certainly do everything I can. The

:10:53. > :10:57.73-year-old went missing after telling his family he was going

:10:58. > :11:03.walking in the hills. His equipment had been acting is hotel room. His

:11:04. > :11:07.relatives were joined by police officers and a mountain rescue

:11:08. > :11:10.specialist as they scoured the area. They say strategic support is

:11:11. > :11:16.essential. We need to get a congressional

:11:17. > :11:25.search team out there for a thorough search of the area in Crete. The

:11:26. > :11:29.conditions are absolutely horrific out there and they have a large area

:11:30. > :11:31.to search was up the pressure on the UK government has swept around the

:11:32. > :11:36.world, with people offering support from near and far. It has helped the

:11:37. > :11:44.family cope with any lack of new developments.

:11:45. > :11:49.We have not asked anyone to do this. It is heart-warming when people are

:11:50. > :11:52.prepared to go above and beyond to help. That is the sort of message I

:11:53. > :11:57.would like to give to David Cameron. More family member is due

:11:58. > :12:01.to fly to Crete tomorrow to widen the search area. The UK governance

:12:02. > :12:07.says it is already giving consumer assistance. In the five and a half

:12:08. > :12:10.weeks and see was last seen, Arthur Jones's family and this can usually

:12:11. > :12:16.have made huge efforts to my people about his disappearance. In this

:12:17. > :12:19.letter, there is some hopes that the prime in a store be prompted to keep

:12:20. > :12:26.his promise to do everything he can to help.

:12:27. > :12:29.Much more to come to before 7pm. I would like to take the opportunity

:12:30. > :12:34.of wishing Swansea all the very best as a new city. The scene of many of

:12:35. > :12:39.the city 's big days, Swansea's Brangwyn Hall is restored to its

:12:40. > :12:42.former glory. And we have seen the last of the

:12:43. > :12:48.berry hot and humid weather for a while. It full forecast later. -- a

:12:49. > :12:52.full forecast later. To the Commonwealth Games now, where

:12:53. > :13:00.team Wales have already beaten the total of 19 medals they won in Delhi

:13:01. > :13:07.four years ago. That is Glasgow is up -- let us cross to glass go.

:13:08. > :13:14.Thank you. Welcome to Glasgow. It has been a lovely day here. A day

:13:15. > :13:19.packed full of competition. Wales's medal count up to 20 as we reach the

:13:20. > :13:28.end of day five. There may be more to come. Jazz Jones is up for a

:13:29. > :13:36.gold. There was some disappointment for the team captain. Aled Sion

:13:37. > :13:45.Davies was hoping for a gold but he had to settle for silver.

:13:46. > :13:50.Gutted. He missed out on gold. The disappointment all too much for Aled

:13:51. > :13:54.Sion Davies. The morning started so well for the Paralympic and world

:13:55. > :13:59.champion. He has limited mobility in his right leg and this is what he

:14:00. > :14:04.can achieve with his right arm. His second attempt put him in the lead.

:14:05. > :14:10.But Dan Greaves from England fought back. Aled Sion Davies could not

:14:11. > :14:15.better it. Expectations were high here at Hampden Park that Wales

:14:16. > :14:23.would pick up its third gold medal of the games, with Aled Sion Davies

:14:24. > :14:37.competing in his Paris -- in his para sport event. It did not turn

:14:38. > :14:49.out that way, he was clearly in tears after his event. To be the

:14:50. > :14:53.team captain of a thriving team. He delivered a performance that was

:14:54. > :14:59.hard to match. We were swapping the lead, so it was close. I just missed

:15:00. > :15:04.out. After competing, his family, who travelled from Wales, were

:15:05. > :15:09.desperate to catch up. His father tried to track him down before a

:15:10. > :15:19.kiss from his girlfriend and a cuddle from his mother. You did

:15:20. > :15:23.brilliant! It was fab. So much time, effort and dedication he has put

:15:24. > :15:30.into his training and commitment and he is so committed that when he

:15:31. > :15:34.tries his best, unfortunately he wanted gold but he has had silver

:15:35. > :15:39.and we are proud of him. Elsewhere, the 100 metre sprint for visually

:15:40. > :15:46.impaired athletes saw a season 's best. At 44, the Welsh one has

:15:47. > :15:56.plenty of experience, having come needed at six Paralympic Games.

:15:57. > :16:02.Rees Jones who has cerebral palsy is also hoping to medal in his event

:16:03. > :16:11.tonight. After success last time round, can

:16:12. > :16:20.the hammer thrower turn silver into gold?

:16:21. > :16:27.Arab medal total is looking healthy banks to the rhythmic gymnastics

:16:28. > :16:30.team. -- our medal total. They have spent the weekend talking

:16:31. > :16:34.to media from all over the world. I caught up with the trio along the

:16:35. > :16:42.banks of the River earlier and began by asking if it had also gained. --

:16:43. > :16:50.if it had all sunk in. Yesterday was a calm day, so it was better. Today,

:16:51. > :16:54.we have been out a bit more and people keep stopping us, children

:16:55. > :16:59.and so on, so it seems a little more real. It is scary but lovely to have

:17:00. > :17:04.seen so many little children who have loved it. It is really good.

:17:05. > :17:09.When you work in but one that final performance, the one you won the

:17:10. > :17:20.gold with, was there a sense of, I will do this, this is my last

:17:21. > :17:23.moment? It was the last one. I was not thinking about placing by then.

:17:24. > :17:29.I was gobsmacked the whole week, the whole three days so far. The last

:17:30. > :17:32.one was pure pleasure and it was my last routine, I will just do it.

:17:33. > :17:38.Just a word about the two team-mates next you. I know you are emotional

:17:39. > :17:42.about them. Just tell is about how special beast who are. I think you

:17:43. > :17:46.can all see because you have watched them perform and you have seen how

:17:47. > :17:50.much support they show. I think they have shown as much as I could

:17:51. > :17:55.explain how special they are all ready. The bond between you has been

:17:56. > :18:00.lovely. It is a special friendship. Yes, we are close friends. When we

:18:01. > :18:03.are at home and we spent time out of the gym as well as in the gym, you

:18:04. > :18:09.have thought that we would get bored of each other. But we still spend

:18:10. > :18:14.all of our time together. Do you get nervous watching the others? Yes,

:18:15. > :18:21.really nervous. On the last day, when Frankie was doing her ribbon, I

:18:22. > :18:24.was screaming. I was more nervous for her than for myself. What has

:18:25. > :18:31.been the reaction from everybody to you winning the silver medal in the

:18:32. > :18:38.team? I've had an amazing response. Everyone has been so proud. It has

:18:39. > :18:42.been amazing. Have you thought about where you will keep your medal? Has

:18:43. > :18:49.anybody asked a habit to put it in the house? Yes, they said to put it

:18:50. > :18:55.in a safe in the village. I think I will frame it and put it on the

:18:56. > :18:59.wall. I can tell you, will me finish that interview, they were mobbed.

:19:00. > :19:06.Little girls are running up to them, asking to have photos taken. The

:19:07. > :19:11.Frankie factor is having an impact on the artistic gymnastics. They are

:19:12. > :19:17.currently leading the team event. Wales's women currently in the lead

:19:18. > :19:20.in the team event. Other news today and the first medal

:19:21. > :19:26.of the day for team Wales came this morning at the lawn bowls in

:19:27. > :19:33.Kelvingrove, where they beat Australia. They held their nerve in

:19:34. > :19:40.a game to win 16-3. It was wales's first medal on the polls this year.

:19:41. > :19:48.After disappointment yesterday, it was good. It was a big day. We've be

:19:49. > :19:55.-- we regrouped and it was fantastic. As I mentioned earlier,

:19:56. > :20:02.all eyes on the pool tonight and a potentially historic night for wales

:20:03. > :20:09.women. It would end a 40 year wait for a gold medal from a Welsh woman

:20:10. > :20:19.in the pool. Jazz broke the games record in her semifinal. Keep a

:20:20. > :20:23.close eye on her. Also potential medals in the backstroke and

:20:24. > :20:29.butterfly. Wales has a contender through in the

:20:30. > :20:33.bantamweight division in boxing. The 22-year-old is on target to become

:20:34. > :20:40.the first Welshman to win to boxing golds at the Commonwealth Games.

:20:41. > :20:43.Just walking around the streets of the city, I can tell you that

:20:44. > :20:46.Scotland as a nation are very pleased with how the games are

:20:47. > :20:50.going. But there is no guarantee that Wales will follow suit in a bid

:20:51. > :20:55.to host an up-and-coming Commonwealth game. -- Commonwealth

:20:56. > :21:00.Games. That is what the first Minister said. Congratulating team

:21:01. > :21:04.Wales for their medals, he said that they would like to host the games in

:21:05. > :21:09.principle but that it is very expensive. It costs a lot of money.

:21:10. > :21:14.?500 million. You would have to find other sources of money, you have to

:21:15. > :21:17.find somewhere in Wales that needed to be be generated that was also

:21:18. > :21:31.access about. That is what they have done here, this area of Glasgow,

:21:32. > :21:46.they was regeneration here. Wales have one attained 20 medal so far.

:21:47. > :21:51.Two golds. Nine silver and nine bronze. They are ninth overall in

:21:52. > :21:54.the medal table, just behind Singapore. As I mentioned, they

:21:55. > :22:02.could be adding to that medal tally tonight, with medals up for grabs in

:22:03. > :22:06.the pool. Anna a vicious target was set for 27. It does not look so out

:22:07. > :22:10.of reach now. We need to keep pondering on that. That is all for

:22:11. > :22:19.now. We'll be back with a late bulletin. Back to you in Cardiff.

:22:20. > :22:23.Thank you. One of Swansea's most iconic landmarks has reopened after

:22:24. > :22:29.a multi-million pound restoration project. The Brangwyn Hall had been

:22:30. > :22:34.the furthest -- had not been the furthest since it was opened 80

:22:35. > :22:37.years ago. It is now fit for the 21st century. We have had a look.

:22:38. > :22:44.I would like to take the opportunity of wishing Swansea all the very best

:22:45. > :22:53.as a new city. Since it first opened in 1934, the Brangwyn Hall has seen

:22:54. > :22:58.its fair share of history. It is where Prince Charles announced

:22:59. > :23:03.Swansea would be given city status. Having hosted various events for 80

:23:04. > :23:12.years, it was showing its age. It has now reopened after a ?6 million

:23:13. > :23:20.renovation scheme. Visitors returning to the whole may

:23:21. > :23:23.wonder what has changed. The idea was to subtly upgrade and refurbish

:23:24. > :23:31.this grade one listed building. Restoring it to its former splendour

:23:32. > :23:35.but also making it a concert venue fit for the 21st century. We have

:23:36. > :23:40.completely transformed the Green trim for performers. We have added

:23:41. > :23:43.new toilets, new bar facilities, we have low energy light bulbs

:23:44. > :23:47.throughout the venue. We have rainwater capture, we have made it

:23:48. > :23:51.eco-friendly. We have easy access and it is the number one venue to

:23:52. > :23:58.come to. The hall is named after Frank Brangwyn, and it is home to

:23:59. > :24:04.his reddish Empire panels. It was commissioned by the House of Lords

:24:05. > :24:07.to commemorate the war. They were to be shown in the Palace of

:24:08. > :24:13.Westminster. They were deemed to be too colourful and lively and they

:24:14. > :24:17.were eventually brought to Swansea. A plastic shield had to be placed
