:00:00. > 3:59:59of a radical plan to shake up the student loan system,

:00:00. > :00:29.but games in Glasgow, where history has

:00:30. > :00:33.been made tonight, as we have heard. Swimmer Jazz Carlin has become the

:00:34. > :00:36.first Welsh woman in 40 years to win a gold medal in the pool. The

:00:37. > :00:41.23-year-old from Swansea broke her own Commonwealth record to win the

:00:42. > :00:50.800 metres freestyle. It was an emotional night for jazz and her

:00:51. > :00:57.family, as our reporter details. Representing Wales, Jazz Carlin.

:00:58. > :01:01.A rare sight at the Commonwealth and is. You would have to go back 40

:01:02. > :01:12.years to find the last Welsh woman getting gold in the poll. -- pool.

:01:13. > :01:19.Overwhelmed and emotional, Jazz Carlin took that elusive top prize.

:01:20. > :01:24.I can't believe it. Seeing the Welsh flag go up, I'm getting emotional.

:01:25. > :01:29.It's going to be amazing. I'm hoping all the Welsh supporters will have

:01:30. > :01:33.seen the flag go up for gold. Yeah, I think my mum and dad have been

:01:34. > :01:38.there for me. It would just be so good for them to see me on the

:01:39. > :01:42.podium, and it all paid off. Jazz was favourite and she did not

:01:43. > :01:47.disappoint. It was close up until the final lap, and then she'd

:01:48. > :01:50.powered ahead, breaking the Commonwealth record. After a

:01:51. > :01:52.difficult two years with injury and illness and disappointment at

:01:53. > :02:00.missing out on the Olympics, this is a reward. And after the podium,

:02:01. > :02:07.there was time to meet fans and pose for itself the with team-mates. Our

:02:08. > :02:13.female swimmers won a gold in the pool since 1974. Now, that unwanted

:02:14. > :02:21.record, lasting for decades, was swept away here tonight. I was

:02:22. > :02:24.supposed to be there during the ceremony, but I was late because I

:02:25. > :02:28.was listening to the anthem, which you did I hear very often,

:02:29. > :02:32.especially in this in Gulf. It was a very special moment, she deserved

:02:33. > :02:35.that moment so much. But there were no medals in the butterfly, would be

:02:36. > :02:37.there during the ceremony, but I was late because I was listening to the

:02:38. > :02:40.anthem, which she did I hear very often, especially in this in Gulf.

:02:41. > :02:43.It was a very special moment, she deserved that moment so much. But

:02:44. > :02:45.there were no medals in the butterfly, with for this race was in

:02:46. > :02:48.fifth. Undoubtedly, the night belongs to Jazz Carlin, the new

:02:49. > :02:52.golden girl of Welsh swimming. What a night at the pool. And in the

:02:53. > :02:55.athletics this evening, there was a medal for Rhys Jones in the

:02:56. > :03:01.athletics this evening, there was a medal for Rhys Jones Africans to

:03:02. > :03:05.claim bronze at Hampden Park. But the start of the day brought

:03:06. > :03:10.disappointment for team Wales. Captain Aled Sian Davies, despite

:03:11. > :03:15.being a firm favourite, had to settle for silver. He was beaten by

:03:16. > :03:18.England's Dan Greaves. There was also a bronze for Wales' men in the

:03:19. > :03:23.triple bowls. As things stand, the medal tally

:03:24. > :03:28.tonight is 22 medals for team Wales, already three more than in

:03:29. > :03:31.Delhi three years ago, and I can tell you tonight that Jazz Carlin

:03:32. > :03:35.could add to that tally again tomorrow. She goes in the 400 metres

:03:36. > :03:41.heat first thing in the morning. What a night for her. That is it for

:03:42. > :03:44.us here in Glasgow. Now, the rest of the news from Cardiff.

:03:45. > :03:48.Good evening. The police are appealing to the public to send in

:03:49. > :03:54.video footage of violent clashes which broke out during a peaceful

:03:55. > :03:57.march in Cardiff on Saturday. The protesters were demonstrating

:03:58. > :04:01.against Israel's military action in Gaza.

:04:02. > :04:06.On a sunny summer afternoon in Cardiff, a peaceful protest against

:04:07. > :04:10.the Israeli operation in Gaza is suddenly confronted by violence.

:04:11. > :04:15.These pictures, shot by a person on the march, show tables and chairs

:04:16. > :04:18.being hurled through the air, while racist insults shouted. Police say a

:04:19. > :04:22.small number of people disrupted the march as it made its way through the

:04:23. > :04:26.city. There were around 1500 people on the march on Saturday. When they

:04:27. > :04:31.got to this point, the junction of Saint Mary Street and Mill Lane,

:04:32. > :04:34.some people in surrounding bars started throwing glasses, tables and

:04:35. > :04:40.chairs. Two men unconnected to the march were arrested by police, but

:04:41. > :04:44.have seen in released on bail. This woman West on the march. She is

:04:45. > :04:49.a veteran campaigner of more than 30 years, and says she has never seen

:04:50. > :04:53.anything like it. A glass were stolen from to be. The contents went

:04:54. > :05:00.down the side of me. As I turned round, I saw a white man,, saying it

:05:01. > :05:04.wasn't for you, it was the thing next year. I did call him a racist,

:05:05. > :05:08.and I turned to the British-born Muslim woman who this was aimed at.

:05:09. > :05:12.The Cardiff South MP Stephen Doughty was also at the protest. He says it

:05:13. > :05:16.is not clear whether this was a planned attack, but that it cannot

:05:17. > :05:19.be tolerated. There were ugly scenes and comments made that I observed

:05:20. > :05:29.myself. It is not clear whether this is any kind of organised presence,

:05:30. > :05:32.but people should be allowed to peacefully protest and go ahead with

:05:33. > :05:34.their business in Cardiff on a Saturday afternoon without fear of

:05:35. > :05:36.violence, assault, or intimidation. Police say they will investigate how

:05:37. > :05:39.the violence started, and are looking to arrest those involved. As

:05:40. > :05:42.soon as we were aware that the protesters were subjected to

:05:43. > :05:46.balance, we responded by deploying all available officers to the scene

:05:47. > :05:49.to try to restore normality. We have appointed a dedicated team of

:05:50. > :05:52.officers to respond to this enquiry and to bring the offenders to

:05:53. > :05:55.justice. Officers want anyone with

:05:56. > :05:58.information or mobile phone footage from Saturday to contact them.

:05:59. > :06:03.Three nurses have appeared at Bridgend Magistrates' Court charged

:06:04. > :06:08.with the will form the collective nine patients. Rebecca Jones, Claire

:06:09. > :06:12.Cahill and Laura Berta Llano worked at the Princess away hospital in the

:06:13. > :06:16.town. It is alleged they failed to check blood glucose levels and then

:06:17. > :06:20.falsified notes. All three are due to appear at Cardiff Crown Court

:06:21. > :06:23.next month. The Food Standards Agency says

:06:24. > :06:26.initial audits of the poultry processing factory on Anglesey Show

:06:27. > :06:30.the plant is generally satisfactory. The investigation

:06:31. > :06:34.follows allegations of hygiene failings after claims by a newspaper

:06:35. > :06:40.that safety guidelines were breached. The company denies the

:06:41. > :06:43.allegations. The family of a woman who was

:06:44. > :06:48.murdered as she waited for the police to respond to her calls for

:06:49. > :06:53.help have taken their case to the Supreme Court. They want the law to

:06:54. > :06:56.be changed so the police can be sued for negligence. Joanna Michael from

:06:57. > :07:03.Cardiff called 999 twice during a dispute with Kieran Williams five

:07:04. > :07:08.years ago. Our reporter has more. Joanna Michael, a 25-year-old mother

:07:09. > :07:13.murdered by her boyfriend at her home in Cardiff nearly five years

:07:14. > :07:18.ago. 19-year-old Kieran Williams was sentenced to life in prison for

:07:19. > :07:23.stabbing her 72 times. Her to children were in the house at the

:07:24. > :07:30.time. Those screens will never leave me. They were there, and they were

:07:31. > :07:36.real. By the time the police came, which I read them was 30 minutes,

:07:37. > :07:40.all in all, she was dead. For years, Joanna's family have tried to

:07:41. > :07:44.claim damages from the police because of the failure of someone

:07:45. > :07:47.who used the answer 999 calls here. The long-standing legal principle

:07:48. > :07:52.means they cannot sue the police for negligence.

:07:53. > :07:56.Joanna's family are challenging that part of the legal system and have

:07:57. > :08:00.the support of domestic abuse charities and the supreme court

:08:01. > :08:06.today, the highest court in the country. So, why might be police

:08:07. > :08:12.have been negligent? Early in the morning in August 2009, Joanna rang

:08:13. > :08:16.999. Her call was diverted to the wrong force control room by her

:08:17. > :08:21.local mobile phone mast. The police did not take enough details from

:08:22. > :08:24.here. Joanna's local force was South Wales Police, who did not think it

:08:25. > :08:29.required an immediate response because of the lack of detail pasta

:08:30. > :08:33.from neighbouring Gwent. 15 minutes later, Joanna Coles 999 again, and

:08:34. > :08:37.this time she is screaming. She manages to tell them she is in the

:08:38. > :08:41.Saint Mellons area of Cardiff before the line goes dead. South Wales

:08:42. > :08:46.Police then give the call greater priority, and two officers are sent

:08:47. > :08:52.to her home. Shortly afterwards, a neighbour reported domestic

:08:53. > :08:54.dispute, then a stabbing, with children screaming. South Wales

:08:55. > :08:58.Police officers then arrived to find Joanna dead.

:08:59. > :09:00.And Independent Police Complaints Commission enquiry found the police

:09:01. > :09:04.had failed Joanna, although it was impossible to say if she would still

:09:05. > :09:08.be alive if officers had attended sooner. With her family are

:09:09. > :09:12.successful in winning the right to claim for damages, it could be a

:09:13. > :09:16.landmark legal case. They say, if you have everybody suing the police,

:09:17. > :09:21.that will not be any good for society. Of course, this is a very,

:09:22. > :09:24.very important case, with massive consequences, but if the door opens,

:09:25. > :09:27.it will open for many other people in this country. What happened here

:09:28. > :09:32.in the neighbourhood where Joanna used to live and the way in which

:09:33. > :09:37.the police reacted to it, could have a profound effect on the legal

:09:38. > :09:40.system in Wales and in England. The Supreme Court will continue hearing

:09:41. > :09:41.evidence tomorrow, although its detailed findings may not be

:09:42. > :09:52.available for some weeks. The family of a pensioner from

:09:53. > :09:55.Denbigh who went missing while on holiday in Crete have asked the

:09:56. > :09:59.Prime Minister to do more to help the search. Arthur Jones has not

:10:00. > :10:03.been seen for more than five weeks. Today, a letter was delivered to

:10:04. > :10:06.David Cameron, urging him to keep his promise of doing all he could to

:10:07. > :10:12.help. Let's get the weather forecast now.

:10:13. > :10:16.Thank you very much. Temperatures have dropped a bit compared to last

:10:17. > :10:19.week, but still quite warm, especially in the south-east over

:10:20. > :10:24.the next few days. We're not expecting much, if any, rain. Fine

:10:25. > :10:29.and dry tonight, a clear sky, a little mist forming in the

:10:30. > :10:31.countryside by dawn. And a comfortable night for sleeping.

:10:36. > :10:38.capital. Tomorrow morning will start fine and dry tonight, a clear sky, a

:10:40. > :10:42.comfortable night for sleeping. Temperatures as low as 10 Celsius in

:10:43. > :10:52.land, no lower than 16 in the capital. Tomorrow morning will start

:10:53. > :10:57.fining bright across the rest of the UK, some showers in the morning will

:10:58. > :11:00.die away. Some sunshine for the Midlands unthinking chip. Light rain

:11:01. > :11:05.from northern England and North Wales. For Scotland and Northern

:11:06. > :11:10.Ireland, brightening up with a view showers. Highest temperatures in the

:11:11. > :11:15.south-east, 27 Celsius. In Glasgow tomorrow, a damp start, brightening

:11:16. > :11:19.up. Maybe a shower in the afternoon. A high of 18 Celsius with a westerly

:11:20. > :11:23.breeze. In Wales, more cloud around by three o'clock in the afternoon. A

:11:24. > :11:27.few spots of light rain and drizzle and parts of the north-west,

:11:28. > :11:32.otherwise dry, warmest in the south-east, up to 24 Celsius in

:11:33. > :11:37.Monmouth. Into, more dry weather. Lancia cloud, a little sunshine,

:11:38. > :11:42.maybe the odd shower in the North. 21 Celsius the high-end bracken.

:11:43. > :11:45.More dry weather on Thursday, but signs are able to earn more

:11:46. > :11:48.unsettled later in the week. Lower pressure brings a greater risk of

:11:49. > :11:52.rain and showers as we head into the weekend.

:11:53. > :11:58.Thank you very much. Newsnight is over on BBC Two Wales now. Thank you

:11:59. > :12:02.for watching. From all others on the programme, good night.
