:00:16. > :00:17.Good evening from the centre of Cardiff, where tonight world

:00:18. > :00:21.leaders are gathered for a working dinner at the end of

:00:22. > :00:26.Barack Obama and representatives from 28 nations have spent the day

:00:27. > :00:28.at the Celtic Manor in Newport, their agenda full of Afghanistan,

:00:29. > :00:34.One of the most important gatherings of political leaders

:00:35. > :00:38.Protestors have taken to the streets, but not

:00:39. > :00:44.Police say there have been a number of arrests in Cardiff this evening.

:00:45. > :00:47.But there was a warm welcome at Mount Pleasant school in Newport

:00:48. > :00:53.earlier for the first serving US president to visit Wales.

:00:54. > :00:55.Our first report tonight is from our Welsh affairs editor

:00:56. > :01:08.It was one of the biggest days in the Welsh political history, as far

:01:09. > :01:12.as physical gatherings go. The nations gathered in Newport and

:01:13. > :01:20.Cardiff for what is probably one of the most important alliance meetings

:01:21. > :01:23.in a quarter of a century. To the voters -- tonight the focus shifted

:01:24. > :01:29.to Cardiff Castle, where they will have dinner ahead of the second and

:01:30. > :01:31.final day of discussions. The small talk over dinner was strictly

:01:32. > :01:36.limited. The first people to greet the US

:01:37. > :01:39.president weren't the other leaders gathered at the Celtic Manor

:01:40. > :01:41.but the schoolchildren at present gathered at the Celtic Manor

:01:42. > :01:45.but the schoolchildren at a Under the glare of the world media,

:01:46. > :01:51.two pupils got to make I still can't believe that.

:01:52. > :02:01.I was in shock when I got chosen. Still in shock now?

:02:02. > :02:03.Yes. Money can't buy that.

:02:04. > :02:19.in a lifetime opportunity. And for the rest of the chosen few,

:02:20. > :02:23.the chance to chat to one of What is this?

:02:24. > :02:31.The river? All too soon it was over,

:02:32. > :02:34.with pupils and teachers still not believing this school was chosen

:02:35. > :02:41.and all because they asked. The children sent a tweet to NATO,

:02:42. > :02:44.asking if we could have a VIP visit. How things happened

:02:45. > :02:47.from there we are not sure but we ended up six weeks ago with a couple

:02:48. > :02:50.of little pre-visits and then we were told that something significant

:02:51. > :02:56.is probably going to happen. In terms of keeping it a secret, a

:02:57. > :03:00.few people in the school knew from the start and it was very much like

:03:01. > :03:11.James Bond, on a need to know basis. Back at the Celtic Manor, the band

:03:12. > :03:14.from the Prince of Wales division played Men of Harlech as the flags

:03:15. > :03:22.of the member states were flown. May I extend my heartfelt thanks

:03:23. > :03:26.to the people of Wales for their generous hospitality for so many

:03:27. > :03:28.delegations on behalf of NATO and Today

:03:29. > :03:41.the world has truly come to Wales. Everyone had gathered

:03:42. > :03:44.for a summit which it said would shape the future of NATO but first

:03:45. > :03:47.this room packed with the world's most powerful military leaders

:03:48. > :04:04.paused to remember the fallen. The ceremonials over, it was time

:04:05. > :04:07.for the real business to begin. But it wasn't Afghanistan that was

:04:08. > :04:09.dominating the agenda, Events in Ukraine, Iraq,

:04:10. > :04:16.Syria and elsewhere meant a note We meet at a crucial time

:04:17. > :04:22.in the history of our alliance. The world faces many dangerous and

:04:23. > :04:25.evolving threats and it is clear that NATO is as you vital to our

:04:26. > :04:34.future as it has been in our past. Tomorrow it will be back to Newport

:04:35. > :04:37.and more talks to resolve problems Our political reporter

:04:38. > :04:44.James Williams is in the grounds As you say,

:04:45. > :04:55.the global leaders are enjoying the fine dining of the celebrated

:04:56. > :05:00.chef Stephen Terry as we speak. It seems that things are coming to a

:05:01. > :05:04.close here. This is very much

:05:05. > :05:07.a working dinner so the discussions that have been ongoing throughout

:05:08. > :05:10.the day at the Celtic Manor resort at Newport are still being discussed

:05:11. > :05:12.here at Cardiff Castle. There are two main things

:05:13. > :05:15.on the agenda. Firstly, they will be discussing

:05:16. > :05:22.the ongoing crisis in Ukraine and secondly, the focus will be on the

:05:23. > :05:24.issue of rising extremist Islamic There will be some fine dining for

:05:25. > :05:31.sure but also some tough talking. We understand there have been three

:05:32. > :05:33.arrests as global leaders made their way to

:05:34. > :05:48.the banquet in Cardiff Castle. We understand around 2,000 people

:05:49. > :05:51.thronged the streets of Cardiff, I understand the number of curious

:05:52. > :05:57.bystanders far outnumbered There was

:05:58. > :06:01.an earlier protest this morning when 250 protesters marched from

:06:02. > :06:04.the centre of Newport city centre to But, again, the numbers are

:06:05. > :06:11.far fewer than expected. Although there are undoubtedly

:06:12. > :06:14.pockets of ill feeling towards Nato, the people here

:06:15. > :06:16.in Wales are generally content that Wales can provide

:06:17. > :06:33.the backdrop to the discussions. Well, earlier this evening,

:06:34. > :06:35.the Prince of Wales hosted a reception for world leaders

:06:36. > :06:38.and guests from all walks of Welsh President Obama was

:06:39. > :06:47.among the guests. I can see the extraordinary beauty,

:06:48. > :06:49.the wonderful people, I would encourage everyone

:06:50. > :07:03.in the States to come to Wales. Some other news in brief

:07:04. > :07:06.and a coroner has called for improvements in the transfer

:07:07. > :07:08.of patients from ambulance to hospital, after a man from Wrexham

:07:09. > :07:11.died of a haemorrhage in his bowel. Clive Turner, who was 73,

:07:12. > :07:14.waited nearly six hours for an ambulance and two hours in a queue

:07:15. > :07:17.outside the Maelor Hospital, during The doctor then misdiagnosed

:07:18. > :07:23.his condition and sent him home. There's uncertainty over

:07:24. > :07:25.the future of Plas Madoc Leisure Centre following the resignation of

:07:26. > :07:28.ten Labour councillors in Wrexham. The authority was due to decide

:07:29. > :07:31.whether it should be handed over But the meeting has been postponed

:07:32. > :07:35.after the leader Let's get the weather now. Benny,

:07:36. > :07:50.what can we expect? Thanks very much. The weather has

:07:51. > :07:55.been behaving itself through today and we can look forward to some fine

:07:56. > :07:58.conditions through tomorrow. High pressure in charge with variable

:07:59. > :08:04.amounts of cloud. Some sunny spells as well. There will be clear skies

:08:05. > :08:11.tonight but further inland a bit more cloud and mist and fog. A

:08:12. > :08:16.fairly mild night. First thing tomorrow morning it is a bit of a

:08:17. > :08:20.cloudy start, especially away from the coast. Things will improve as

:08:21. > :08:25.the morning goes on. We will see this cold weather front bringing in

:08:26. > :08:29.some rain across Northern Ireland and Scotland. Behind it is fresh air

:08:30. > :08:34.a bit clearer air. Further south and east, try and east, triad brighter

:08:35. > :08:38.with highs of 22 Celsius. Looking fine across Wales tomorrow afternoon

:08:39. > :08:42.but compared to today, a lot more cloud. The cloud could be thick

:08:43. > :08:48.enough to produce the odd spot of light rain or drizzle. 19-21

:08:49. > :08:54.Celsius. Another fairly quiet night tomorrow night but that cold front

:08:55. > :09:01.in Anglesey and Wrexham, bringing a little bit of rain. Further south it

:09:02. > :09:06.is dry and mild. Temperatures between 12 and 16 Celsius. Once the

:09:07. > :09:10.front clears, fresher air behind it. Vera air as well so we can look

:09:11. > :09:15.forward to some sunshine but feeling cooler with highs of 15 and 20

:09:16. > :09:20.Celsius. The bitches about where they should be for September. Dry

:09:21. > :09:26.weather to look forward to on Sunday with some sunny spells. Highs of 16

:09:27. > :09:30.and 19 Celsius. For the start of next week, high-pressure taking

:09:31. > :09:32.charge with cold nights but dry and sunny by day.

:09:33. > :09:44.You may be able to hear a helicopter in the background, perhaps one of

:09:45. > :09:45.the delegates taking off from the castle.

:09:46. > :09:47.Well, tomorrow an aerial display by military jets

:09:48. > :09:50.from nine countries, including the RAF's Red Arrows, will fly past

:09:51. > :09:53.as they make their way to the Celtic Manor.

:09:54. > :09:56.Of course, leaders will resume their summit discussions tomorrow,

:09:57. > :09:58.and we'll be bringing you the latest throughout the day.

:09:59. > :10:09.From all of us on Wales Today, good night.

:10:10. > :10:11.MUSIC: "Changing" by Sigma Featuring Paloma Faith

:10:12. > :10:13.# This ain't real This ain't cool
