:00:19. > :00:22.The Independent Police Complaints Commission has tonight highlighted

:00:23. > :00:26.failings at Gwent Police and says the force needs to improve the way

:00:27. > :00:32.It's not the first time the force has been criticised for this.

:00:33. > :00:35.Caroline Parry was shot by her estranged husband in Newport

:00:36. > :00:45.Tonight, the IPCC says the force had been told twice

:00:46. > :00:46.of Mrs Parry's fear of her husband.

:00:47. > :00:51.Let down by police, who missed opportunities to help.

:00:52. > :00:55.Caroline Parry was later shot by her estranged husband.

:00:56. > :00:58.She'd left him after 27 years of marriage,

:00:59. > :01:04.While on trial for her murder, Christopher Parry was described

:01:05. > :01:15.In August of 2013, he drove from the former marital home in Cwmbran,

:01:16. > :01:18.with a shotgun in the boot of his car.

:01:19. > :01:20.He arrived at Seabreeze Avenue in Newport where Mrs Parry

:01:21. > :01:24.They argued, and she was shot twice in the back.

:01:25. > :01:26.Mr Parry then turned the gun on himself,

:01:27. > :01:30.The 50-year-old was jailed earlier this year for murder, and sentenced

:01:31. > :01:37.Today's report by the police watchdog highlights

:01:38. > :01:39.a number of shortcomings by Gwent Police in their handling

:01:40. > :01:45.Mrs Parry had contacted the force twice in the months

:01:46. > :01:53.On May 2nd 2013, an officer spoke to Mr Parry.

:01:54. > :01:56.He admitted he had followed Caroline.

:01:57. > :01:59.But the officer did not tell him what he had done was wrong.

:02:00. > :02:03.On May 20th, police were called to an alleged altercation.

:02:04. > :02:06.Mr Parry was behaving aggressively in front of officers, but

:02:07. > :02:18.his weapons weren't removed, nor was his shotgun certificate checked.

:02:19. > :02:30.We do know that the police and the are committed to making improvements

:02:31. > :02:33.and we do know of the IPCC that those improvements must be made,

:02:34. > :02:36.because it is not the first time that we have highlighted failings

:02:37. > :02:41.into domestic abuse cases with Gwent Police, and it is really time that

:02:42. > :02:45.those failings are put right. If we can learn from some of these

:02:46. > :02:48.mistakes that have happened in the past, it is these times when it goes

:02:49. > :02:50.wrong that can lead to someone's death, so it needs to be done across

:02:51. > :02:52.the board better. Gwent Police say a number

:02:53. > :02:55.of changes have been made, including training and new procedures

:02:56. > :02:58.for dealing with domestic abuse. They say lessons have been learnt

:02:59. > :03:01.from this tragic set of circumstances, but accept that

:03:02. > :03:04.further improvements are necessary. Two nurses accused of neglecting

:03:05. > :03:07.patients at the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend have

:03:08. > :03:09.appeared at Cardiff Crown Court. Jade Pugh is charged with three

:03:10. > :03:14.counts of wilful neglect, while Natalie Jones is charged with

:03:15. > :03:17.four counts. They were arrested as part

:03:18. > :03:20.of an ongoing police investigation into the falsification

:03:21. > :03:22.of patient records. The case was adjourned

:03:23. > :03:29.until next month. The mother of a man, allegedly

:03:30. > :03:32.forced to work on a Newport farm, broke down in tears as she told

:03:33. > :03:36.a jury that he looked like "a little old man" when the family saw

:03:37. > :03:39.him for the first time in 13 years. A father and son deny requiring

:03:40. > :03:41.Darrell Simester to perform The trial has been adjourned

:03:42. > :03:50.until Friday. A fire station in Rhondda Cynon Taf

:03:51. > :03:54.is set to close. South Wales Fire Authority voted

:03:55. > :03:56.in favour of shutting Some fire fighters have expressed

:03:57. > :03:59.concern about the impact on safety. South Wales Fire Service says it has

:04:00. > :04:02.to continue to ensure People on a housing estate

:04:03. > :04:09.in Swansea have won their battle with the council over

:04:10. > :04:12.huge rent increases. Fees for householders on the Elba

:04:13. > :04:15.estate, in Gowerton, were to be increased from ?50 a year

:04:16. > :04:20.to ?2,500 by Swansea Council. But the council says it'll now

:04:21. > :04:26.offer a more affordable rate. For the first time,

:04:27. > :04:28.specialist doctors will join the crews of the Wales Air Ambulance

:04:29. > :04:32.as part of a new emergency service. The so-called flying doctors will

:04:33. > :04:37.cost almost ?3 million a year, and it's claimed it could help

:04:38. > :04:42.boost survival rates by up to 40%. Our health correspondent,

:04:43. > :04:46.Owain Clarke, reports. Taking emergency care to a higher

:04:47. > :04:51.level, the three air ambulances can take paramedics to emergencies

:04:52. > :04:55.within minutes. From next spring, these helicopters will routinely

:04:56. > :05:00.carry hospital consultants on duty 12 hours a day at Swansea airport.

:05:01. > :05:06.When the helicopters cannot fly, they will use a fleet of specially

:05:07. > :05:11.designed vehicles. It won't be a case of taking the patient to

:05:12. > :05:15.accident and emergency but bringing the expertise straight to the

:05:16. > :05:28.patient. We are going to take senior doctors

:05:29. > :05:34.in this beautiful machine to the side of a patient who may be

:05:35. > :05:35.critically injured, made have major trauma, a recent injury like a

:05:36. > :05:37.stroke. I got first-hand experience of how

:05:38. > :05:40.the air ambulance can cover vast swathes of Mid Wales in minutes. It

:05:41. > :05:48.is claimed it will allow doctors to potentially reach 95% of the Welsh

:05:49. > :05:56.population in just half an hour. We know that we can't go on

:05:57. > :06:01.providing bits and pieces of care around the country, we know we need

:06:02. > :06:03.to get people to the specialist care as quickly as possible. This will be

:06:04. > :06:10.part of that solution. No extra doctors will be

:06:11. > :06:12.recruited, instead, they will be shared with hospitals.

:06:13. > :06:14.By giving specialists a chance to hone their skills in the skies, it

:06:15. > :06:18.is hoped more of the brightest and best can be encouraged to work in

:06:19. > :06:21.Wales. People will be working part-time in

:06:22. > :06:24.this service, that is an important message.

:06:25. > :06:28.We have two make new posts in emergency medicine more attractive.

:06:29. > :06:34.This will hopefully pull people in. As is currently the case with air

:06:35. > :06:37.ambulance paramedics, the NHS will pay the salaries of these doctors.

:06:38. > :06:49.The Wales air Canada charity will pay the salaries of these doctors.

:06:50. > :06:52.The Wales Air Ambulance charity will continue to pay the ?6 million a

:06:53. > :06:55.year to fund the helicopters and Football, and a major blow for Wales

:06:56. > :07:00.and Chris Coleman. Midfielder Aaron Ramsey is out for

:07:01. > :07:03.at least a month, after suffering a hamstring injury in Arsenal's draw

:07:04. > :07:05.against Tottenham at the weekend. It's a real blow ahead

:07:06. > :07:07.of the European qualifiers. Wales play Bosnia

:07:08. > :07:09.on the 10th October, Liverpool's Joe Allen is also

:07:10. > :07:18.an injury concern. Cardiff City owner Vincent Tan is

:07:19. > :07:21.urging fans to give Russell Slade a chance when he is appointed

:07:22. > :07:24.manager, possibly later this week. Tan says Slade is

:07:25. > :07:26.his personal choice, unlike the club's three

:07:27. > :07:28.previous managers. Caretaker coaches Scott Young

:07:29. > :07:31.and Danny Gabbidon will still be in charge at Brighton tomorrow night,

:07:32. > :07:36.after leading the Bluebirds to Nathan Cleverly's re-match

:07:37. > :07:43.against Tony Bellew will take place on November 22nd at the

:07:44. > :07:47.Liverpool Echo Arena. The pair first fought

:07:48. > :07:49.in 2011 where the Welshman But the second meeting will

:07:50. > :07:54.take place at cruiserweight. The winner is likely to qualify

:07:55. > :08:09.for a world title fight. Derek has tonight's forecast.

:08:10. > :08:13.We have enjoyed some lovely weather this September, warm and dry. There

:08:14. > :08:19.is more dry weather to come over the next few days, a mild start to

:08:20. > :08:24.October but not completely dry. Dry for most of us tonight, bar the odd

:08:25. > :08:27.October but not completely dry. Dry light shower, for example. There is

:08:28. > :08:30.some low cloud and missed forming and a mild night. Tomorrow, we have

:08:31. > :08:35.a weak cold front over Ireland and it is heading our way. Tomorrow

:08:36. > :08:40.morning is Graham places first thing, low cloud and mist lifting. A

:08:41. > :08:43.dry morning and mist lifting. A dry morning and it will start to

:08:44. > :08:48.brighten up with some sunshine in Newtown. Across the UK, mist and fog

:08:49. > :08:53.patches will lift, most of England with sunny spells by the odd shower

:08:54. > :08:56.in the south-east. Some rain in Northern Ireland and western

:08:57. > :09:00.Scotland and it will spread into some other northern and western

:09:01. > :09:05.parts during the afternoon. Quite breezy through the Irish Sea, a high

:09:06. > :09:09.of 22 in London. At three o'clock in the afternoon, most of Wales still

:09:10. > :09:13.dry but some rain in the West which will spread eastwards by the

:09:14. > :09:18.evening. Breezy in the north and west compared to today, lighter

:09:19. > :09:24.winds in the south and east with this a high 20. Most of this will

:09:25. > :09:35.clear, much of Wales drying up overnight and again, low cloud and

:09:36. > :09:39.mist. Wednesday, more dry weather, some spots of rain. Thursday looks

:09:40. > :09:44.mostly settled thanks to high pressure. The wind will be picking

:09:45. > :09:49.up and there is rain on the way, heralding change, wet and windy end

:09:50. > :09:52.to the week, turning cooler of the weekend and much more autumnal next

:09:53. > :09:58.week. Thank you, we are back in Breakfast

:09:59. > :10:01.with the latest news, sport, travel and weather updates from 6am

:10:02. > :10:03.tomorrow. Thank you for watching, from all of us on the programme,
