0:00:10 > 0:00:12Welcome to Wales Today - our top story...

0:00:12 > 0:00:15Roads were turned into rivers but new ?15 million flood defences

0:00:15 > 0:00:18are built the other side of Rhyl - some residents are not happy

0:00:18 > 0:00:21and Garry Monk remains in charge of Swansea City Football Club,

0:00:21 > 0:00:21at least for now.

0:00:34 > 0:00:35Good evening.

0:00:35 > 0:00:38A ?15 million flood defence scheme has been officially opened in

0:00:38 > 0:00:41West Rhyl but victims of a storm surge to the east of

0:00:41 > 0:00:48the town have told this programme they're angry that little has been

0:00:48 > 0:00:49done to protect homes there.

0:00:49 > 0:00:51The Welsh Government says it's making thousands more properties

0:00:51 > 0:00:55across Wales safer from flooding.

0:00:55 > 0:00:59Matthew Richards reports.

0:00:59 > 0:01:01The water's gone down.

0:01:02 > 0:01:07Two years ago, Yvonne and Jeff Cowan showed us how

0:01:07 > 0:01:10flooding had ruined their home.

0:01:10 > 0:01:13They lost photographs, their wedding album and were forced to

0:01:13 > 0:01:15spend six months living elsewhere.

0:01:15 > 0:01:17You can really see the difference.

0:01:17 > 0:01:20It's just absolutely fabulous.

0:01:20 > 0:01:23Today, they're back after a complete refurbishment but say they're angry

0:01:23 > 0:01:27that the east end of Rhyl is still vulnerable to a future flood.

0:01:27 > 0:01:29Everything is being done in the west end of Rhyl

0:01:29 > 0:01:31and nothing in the east end.

0:01:31 > 0:01:36Give us peace of mind - that's all we want is peace of mind.

0:01:36 > 0:01:37I think it's disgusting.

0:01:37 > 0:01:39We should have been priority.

0:01:39 > 0:01:42They weren't flooded up there.

0:01:42 > 0:01:44There's flash floods up to the west end.

0:01:44 > 0:01:47It wasn't flooded and there's no chance of them getting flooded.

0:01:47 > 0:01:50Just down the coast at the windy west end of Rhyl,

0:01:50 > 0:01:53the Natural Resources Minister Carl Sergeant is unveiling flood defences

0:01:53 > 0:01:56which are part of the redevelopment of the harbour area.

0:01:56 > 0:02:00Strengthening the sea wall and other improvements have cost ?15

0:02:00 > 0:02:04million, a fraction of the spend in the east so far.

0:02:04 > 0:02:07We are investing ?800,000 in that area of Rhyl.

0:02:07 > 0:02:11It's not over for this area.

0:02:11 > 0:02:12We are taking our responsibility seriously.

0:02:12 > 0:02:16The Welsh Government is continuing with its investment

0:02:16 > 0:02:18and there'll be more to come for that particular area.

0:02:18 > 0:02:21This week sees the completion of a ?7 million scheme to protect

0:02:21 > 0:02:25400 properties in Fairbourne in Gwynedd by creating a channel for

0:02:25 > 0:02:27floodwater away from the village.

0:02:27 > 0:02:30Back in Denbighshire work will continue for some time.

0:02:30 > 0:02:34With new rock and sea walls and a diversion to the river, this

0:02:34 > 0:02:38part of rail now has three lines of defence against future flooding,

0:02:38 > 0:02:40protecting more than 2500 homes.

0:02:40 > 0:02:44Denbighshire council and the Welsh Government acknowledge that

0:02:44 > 0:02:46there's still plenty of work to be done elsewhere in town.

0:02:46 > 0:02:47Plans are under way.

0:02:47 > 0:02:55We've had some money to do the work that starting now, to divert

0:02:55 > 0:02:56the water across the golf course.

0:02:56 > 0:02:59We are producing plans which the Welsh Government will expect

0:02:59 > 0:03:02from us, that will then help us to get additional funding to raise

0:03:02 > 0:03:03the wall and make it even safer.

0:03:03 > 0:03:06The Cowans and their neighbours have patched up their homes and moved

0:03:06 > 0:03:09on with their lives but say the authorities need to do much more

0:03:09 > 0:03:11here to help rebuild their trust.

0:03:11 > 0:03:12A behind-the-scenes documentary about

0:03:12 > 0:03:15the National Assembly will not go ahead, after Labour objected to it.

0:03:15 > 0:03:20The BBC and ITV asked to make a programme

0:03:20 > 0:03:23about life in Cardiff Bay in the run up to the 2016 Assembly elections.

0:03:23 > 0:03:27Presiding officer Rosemary Butler wanted the approval

0:03:27 > 0:03:30of all parties but Labour said the request came at very short

0:03:30 > 0:03:35notice and could be disruptive.

0:03:35 > 0:03:39A terminally-ill woman from Swansea has had assistance to end her life

0:03:39 > 0:03:41at a clinic in Switzerland.

0:03:41 > 0:03:45Jackie Baker, who was 59 and had Motor Neurone Disease, had asked her

0:03:45 > 0:03:49daughters to help her travel to the Dignitas clinic to die. They

0:03:49 > 0:03:55later cancelled a fundraising event after a visit from the police.

0:03:55 > 0:04:01The family are now calling for a change in the law on assisted dying.

0:04:01 > 0:04:03The former World Athletics Champion Jamie

0:04:03 > 0:04:06Baulch says the sport has lost a lot of credibility and tougher sanctions

0:04:06 > 0:04:08are needed against those who cheat.

0:04:08 > 0:04:11The retired 400-metre runner from Newport was speaking after a

0:04:11 > 0:04:14major report on doping in athletics recommended that Russian athletes be

0:04:14 > 0:04:18banned from all competitions.

0:04:18 > 0:04:23Baulch waited 13 years to be awarded a relay medal, after it emerged an

0:04:23 > 0:04:27American team member had cheated.

0:04:27 > 0:04:29The testing regime has never been great.

0:04:29 > 0:04:32And there will always be doctors out there

0:04:32 > 0:04:34which are out beating the test.

0:04:34 > 0:04:36They will always be in front.

0:04:36 > 0:04:39What we need to do is targeted it a different way,

0:04:39 > 0:04:42give the athletes a longer-term ban and obviously don't endorse athletes

0:04:42 > 0:04:43who have been cheating.

0:04:43 > 0:04:46If they get caught, they've got to give all their money back.

0:04:46 > 0:04:50That would be a big deterrent.

0:04:50 > 0:04:54Football, and Swansea City are dismissing

0:04:54 > 0:04:56reports suggesting that manager Garry Monk could soon be sacked.

0:04:56 > 0:04:59The Swans lost again on Saturday, meaning they're 14th in the

0:04:59 > 0:05:02Premier League, five points above the relegation zone.

0:05:02 > 0:05:06It's been reported the Swansea board are unhappy with

0:05:06 > 0:05:10the club's recent form, which has seen just one win in nine games.

0:05:10 > 0:05:14Here's our sports reporter Iwan Griffiths.

0:05:14 > 0:05:16A manager under pressure.

0:05:16 > 0:05:18Garry Monk was in Norwich on Saturday,

0:05:18 > 0:05:21watching his team lose once again.

0:05:21 > 0:05:25A 70th-minute goal leading to a disappointing one nil defeat.

0:05:25 > 0:05:31Swansea City have gathered just five points from the last 24 on offer.

0:05:31 > 0:05:33Frustrating, very frustrating at the moment.

0:05:33 > 0:05:37We talked about it at half-time, you know, the way that they were set up

0:05:37 > 0:05:39and the amount of ball that we had.

0:05:39 > 0:05:42We never looked in any danger and it was about being patient.

0:05:42 > 0:05:45Unfortunately, one lapse of concentration has cost us dearly

0:05:45 > 0:05:49again and that's pretty much been the story of the last past couple of

0:05:49 > 0:05:50weeks, which has been frustrating.

0:05:50 > 0:05:52Frustrating for myself and for the players.

0:05:52 > 0:05:55Following the game, the Swansea keeper said the players have full

0:05:55 > 0:05:57confidence in their manager, despite newspaper reports this morning that

0:05:57 > 0:06:00Garry Monk is set to be sacked.

0:06:00 > 0:06:04It's been reported the Swansea board are unhappy with

0:06:04 > 0:06:09the club's recent form which has seen just one win in nine games.

0:06:09 > 0:06:12But a senior source has told BBC Wales of his surprise

0:06:12 > 0:06:15at these headlines.

0:06:15 > 0:06:18At the Liberty club shop today, there were mixed feelings

0:06:18 > 0:06:21when it came to discussing the future of Garry Monk.

0:06:21 > 0:06:23The way they are playing at the moment, I wouldn't lose any

0:06:23 > 0:06:25sleep if he goes, to be honest.

0:06:25 > 0:06:28It's lacklustre.

0:06:28 > 0:06:31There's no direction.

0:06:31 > 0:06:34We had 67% possession, we didn't have one attempt on target.

0:06:34 > 0:06:38I think that's where we need to go really is to give Garry Monk

0:06:38 > 0:06:38support.

0:06:38 > 0:06:40He knows the club inside out.

0:06:40 > 0:06:44He's been there since the year dot, so I think he needs a bit more time,

0:06:44 > 0:06:46that interest in sport for him.

0:06:46 > 0:06:49Monk's dismissal would be a dramatic change of fortunes

0:06:49 > 0:06:53for the 36-year-old who back in August was named the Premier

0:06:53 > 0:06:54League's Manager of the Month.

0:06:54 > 0:06:57The Swans are currently 14th in the Barclays Premier League table.

0:06:57 > 0:07:01Relegation is a long way away but the chairman, Huw Jenkins, will be

0:07:01 > 0:07:05driving to keep his club in the top flight as a new 5 billion TV rights

0:07:05 > 0:07:07deal will bring significant funds to the Premiership clubs next season.

0:07:07 > 0:07:11I think they were caught by surprise by these reports

0:07:11 > 0:07:15and they're dismissing them, so it's doesn't look as if

0:07:15 > 0:07:18Garry Monk's departure is imminent.

0:07:18 > 0:07:20That said, Michael Laudrup, before Garry Monk,

0:07:20 > 0:07:24was sacked after one win in ten.

0:07:24 > 0:07:30Garry Monk is starting to reach that sort of area now.

0:07:30 > 0:07:33So I think it makes the Bournemouth home game at a very big game

0:07:33 > 0:07:34for him.

0:07:34 > 0:07:37Garry Monk did admit after Saturday's defeat at Norwich

0:07:37 > 0:07:41that he was at a low point but confident of turning things around.

0:07:41 > 0:07:46It's unclear exactly how much time he has to do just that.

0:07:46 > 0:07:48Newport County have found out they'll face Barnet away

0:07:48 > 0:07:52in the Second Round of the FA Cup if they beat Brackley Town

0:07:52 > 0:07:54in a replay next week.

0:07:54 > 0:07:58Newport drew 2-2 against the non-league side at the weekend.

0:07:58 > 0:08:00Let's take a look at the weather forecast.

0:08:00 > 0:08:02Here's Derek Brockway.

0:08:02 > 0:08:04It's been very wet today in the north-west.

0:08:04 > 0:08:08In Capel Curig in Snowdonia, around 100 millimetres of rain has

0:08:08 > 0:08:10fallen in the last 24 hours.

0:08:10 > 0:08:14That's four inches of rain, so not surprisingly, several rivers

0:08:14 > 0:08:16are now very swollen at the moment.

0:08:16 > 0:08:19There are flood warnings in force and several flood alerts.

0:08:19 > 0:08:23More information on the Natural Resources Wales website.

0:08:23 > 0:08:25And there's more rain to come tonight.

0:08:25 > 0:08:29The rain heaviest and more persistent on the higher

0:08:29 > 0:08:32ground accompanied by fresh to strong winds and an unusually mild

0:08:32 > 0:08:35night for this time of year.

0:08:35 > 0:08:38Into tomorrow, it's cloudy and damp from much of

0:08:38 > 0:08:43us, wet in places and heavy bursts of rain but it will be drier to

0:08:43 > 0:08:47the north and east of high ground.

0:08:47 > 0:08:49Still breezy tomorrow, south-westerly winds.

0:08:49 > 0:08:52Those winds bringing plenty of clouds to the UK,

0:08:52 > 0:08:55most winds with further outbreaks of rain and drizzle.

0:08:55 > 0:08:58Some heavy rain moving into Northern Ireland and Scotland during the day,

0:08:58 > 0:09:01moving slowly southeast upwards into northern England.

0:09:01 > 0:09:04The Midlands and eastern England drier with the odd glimpse

0:09:04 > 0:09:06of sunshine.

0:09:06 > 0:09:09Very mild for most tomorrow, 17C in Leeds.

0:09:09 > 0:09:12A somewhat colder or cool day in the north of Scotland.

0:09:12 > 0:09:16Wales tomorrow afternoon, cloudy and damp for most, hill fog, further

0:09:16 > 0:09:20outbreaks of rain and drizzle, but again, it will be dry to

0:09:20 > 0:09:22the north and east of high ground.

0:09:22 > 0:09:25Tomorrow night, spots of drizzle in the south,

0:09:25 > 0:09:32some heavy bursts of rain for parts of mid and North West Wales.

0:09:32 > 0:09:37Into Armistice Day on Wednesday, spots of drizzle in the south, some

0:09:37 > 0:09:40drier, brighter spells but some heavy rain reaching the northwest

0:09:40 > 0:09:42will spread north eastwards during the afternoon and evening.

0:09:42 > 0:09:49Thursday will start drier and bright but there's more wind

0:09:49 > 0:09:51and rain on the way, turning briefly cold on Friday.

0:09:51 > 0:09:51Good night.

0:09:51 > 0:09:53That's Wales Today.

0:09:53 > 0:09:54Thank you for watching.

0:09:54 > 0:09:57From all of us on the programme, good night.

0:10:07 > 0:10:08MUSIC: Hunter by Farao
