:01:00. > :01:07.haunted their lives ever since. We see the devastation

:01:08. > :01:09.in each other's eyes and know We know that we are

:01:10. > :01:14.helpless to stop the pain. He didn't just kill

:01:21. > :01:25.where five people died in a fire has manslaughter charges

:01:26. > :01:27.against him dropped. And Wales joins the world in paying

:02:03. > :02:06.Executive are already investigating what happened here at 10:30

:02:07. > :02:09.this morning. We begin with Rebecca John

:02:10. > :02:15.on what we know so far. Police emerged from the steelworks

:02:16. > :02:19.this evening to confirm that two people died in an explosion

:02:20. > :02:23.at the plant this morning. I can confirm that today at

:02:24. > :02:27.around 10:30am emergency services responded to

:02:28. > :02:30.reports of an explosion at the Celsa Five persons were injured,

:02:31. > :02:37.one was treated at the scene and four were conveyed to the University

:02:38. > :02:40.Hospital in Cardiff, where two are Two members

:02:41. > :02:46.of staff were unaccounted for. Sadly, I can confirm we

:02:47. > :02:51.have found two bodies. We have informed the families

:02:52. > :02:54.and we are continuing to support them through this difficult time

:02:55. > :02:59.with family support officers. The Health and Safety Executive is

:03:00. > :03:03.currently on scene supporting our initial enquiries and police,

:03:04. > :03:06.fire and ambulance remain, Our priority at this moment

:03:07. > :03:16.in time is to recover the victims, support their families and carry

:03:17. > :03:20.out an investigation to find out South Wales Fire and Rescue Service

:03:21. > :03:26.attended the scene this morning, dealt with an extremely difficult

:03:27. > :03:29.and arduous incident involving Crews worked tirelessly to affect

:03:30. > :03:38.rescues and deal with the fire. Despite heroic attempts,

:03:39. > :03:41.unfortunately we were unable to All the thoughts of the fire

:03:42. > :03:47.and rescure service is with the Fire engines and ambulances parked

:03:48. > :03:54.along the length of the rod This is where large steel rods are

:03:55. > :03:58.made for the construction industry and

:03:59. > :04:02.where the explosion took place and The two people who died were

:04:03. > :04:09.initially unaccounted for Four people were treated

:04:10. > :04:15.in hospital for minor injuries. A big bang, to be honest with you.

:04:16. > :04:23.An explosion. We felt the floor move,

:04:24. > :04:26.it shook beneath our feet. We looked across the back of these

:04:27. > :04:30.buildings and the rooves of the steelworks had black smoke coming

:04:31. > :04:37.out of the top of the buildings. Paul Williams runs

:04:38. > :04:39.a wedding planning business nearby. We heard it straightaway

:04:40. > :04:45.and we thought, oh, my God, Obviously, with what has been going

:04:46. > :04:55.on over the last weekend, Jonathan James is

:04:56. > :05:01.a commercial photographer nearby. All of a sudden,

:05:02. > :05:03.there was a huge explosion The reflectors we were using moved

:05:04. > :05:11.and you could see everything... Operations

:05:12. > :05:17.at the plant have been suspended. Celsa says its thoughts

:05:18. > :05:20.and deepest sympathies are with those affected and their families

:05:21. > :05:42.and its utmost priority is to Let's talk through Rob Edwards from

:05:43. > :05:52.the union. And a counsellor from the community. What's more can you tell

:05:53. > :05:55.us of what happened? May I start by saying my deepest sympathies to the

:05:56. > :06:00.families of these two men who've lost their lives. In regards to what

:06:01. > :06:07.happened today, what I understand, an explosion occurred in the cellars

:06:08. > :06:12.of the mill and this had tragic circumstances. Do you know anything

:06:13. > :06:18.more about the structure of where this explosion happened? You talk

:06:19. > :06:22.about a basement. From what I understand, there is a line that

:06:23. > :06:29.runs across the floor of the works, in layman 's terms within the

:06:30. > :06:34.seller, there is an oil accumulator which is an oil vessel which is

:06:35. > :06:40.under pressure and for whatever reason it's exploded. A huge shock

:06:41. > :06:47.for the community hair. What can you tell us of the community reaction?

:06:48. > :06:53.-- the community here. Nobody expects it in the 21st-century.

:06:54. > :07:01.Steel production has been happening here for 120 years. It is integral

:07:02. > :07:04.hair. -- integral here. If you do not know this part of Cardiff, this

:07:05. > :07:10.is hugely important to the community. Huge. There is a sense of

:07:11. > :07:16.pride in the community that steelworks are still happening. It

:07:17. > :07:20.employs hundreds of people indirectly, 3000 people rely on this

:07:21. > :07:24.plan so a significant part of the Cardiff economy and it is a

:07:25. > :07:36.significant part of the fabric of the divinity. -- community. The

:07:37. > :07:42.injured were taken from here to the university hospital from where our

:07:43. > :07:48.reporter joins us. What is the latest?

:07:49. > :07:56.It's several hours since the apple uses real arrived. -- ambulance.

:07:57. > :08:02.They were receiving oxygen as they were transported inside. The health

:08:03. > :08:07.board in charge implemented so-called major incident protocol.

:08:08. > :08:14.Let's get the latest on the condition of the poor patients

:08:15. > :08:19.here. -- for macro patients. What's more can you tell us? Of the four

:08:20. > :08:26.casualties that were transported to the emergency unit to have been

:08:27. > :08:31.discharged. Two of the patients because the nature of smoke

:08:32. > :08:37.inhalation remain under observation at the hospital. You originally

:08:38. > :08:43.implemented the major incident protocol. What is that entail? That

:08:44. > :08:46.entails is working with the Ambulance Service and the police in

:08:47. > :08:50.order to ensure that we have capacity to deal with those

:08:51. > :08:54.casualties from the incident and deal with the workload we normally

:08:55. > :08:59.deal with. And say the hospital has returned to normal and is fully

:09:00. > :09:01.functional and I would like to reckon I is the professionalism of

:09:02. > :09:07.the staff in dealing with the incident. I would like to say thank

:09:08. > :09:10.you to the health care partners and the public in dealing with the

:09:11. > :09:14.incident. I am aware there have been to macro fatalities and our thoughts

:09:15. > :09:21.are with them. -- two macro fatalities. Thank you. We will keep

:09:22. > :09:25.you up-to-date with the condition of the two patients that remain here at

:09:26. > :09:29.the university 's hospital. For now, back to you.

:09:30. > :09:31.People who live and work in Cardiff have been learning

:09:32. > :09:38.The local MP Stephen Doughty has been giving

:09:39. > :09:54.This is a dark day in the history of steel-making in Cardiff and my heart

:09:55. > :09:59.and my prayers go to the family and friends of those affected. Also to

:10:00. > :10:04.those who have been injured but clearly the deaths of two people is

:10:05. > :10:05.extraordinary. A deep tragedy for the city.

:10:06. > :10:08.The noise from the explosion could be heard far across the city and the

:10:09. > :10:16.On the other side of Cardiff, the First Minister Carwyn Jones told

:10:17. > :10:20.the Senedd of what had happened and of his concerns for those

:10:21. > :10:27.There was an explosion in the rolling mill on

:10:28. > :10:35.The company immediately put their emergency plan into operation.

:10:36. > :10:38.The site is now in the control of the police

:10:39. > :10:41.and emergency services and we understand that the Health and

:10:42. > :10:52.I'm sure all members will join me in expressing our concern and

:10:53. > :10:57.of course join with me in sharing our thoughts with the

:10:58. > :11:03.employees and their families at this very worrying and difficult time.

:11:04. > :11:08.Let's talk to our business correspondent Brian Meechan.

:11:09. > :11:17.You know this site. You spend time here earlier this year. What goes on

:11:18. > :11:20.in there? Walking around in this site and seeing the processes and

:11:21. > :11:24.talking to the workers, two things stand out. First of all, the care

:11:25. > :11:29.and attention paid to health and safety by the workers at this site

:11:30. > :11:36.and secondly the reason for that, steel-making in such a day dangerous

:11:37. > :11:40.process -- dangerous process. Scrap metal is bought from all over and

:11:41. > :11:43.mixed up and put into a furnace and it comes out as liquid. It goes

:11:44. > :11:48.through various cooling processes and what they end up with is steel

:11:49. > :11:56.coil and bars that are used in construction projects like tunnels

:11:57. > :12:01.and energy projects. The steel industry is very dangerous but

:12:02. > :12:08.serious accident are unusual. They are. There was an accident last year

:12:09. > :12:12.here, three workers were treatable by that hospital but to have a loss

:12:13. > :12:17.of life, two people dead after coming to work, that is extremely

:12:18. > :12:23.rare. I'm trying to get a sense of what it is like inside. What are

:12:24. > :12:30.working conditions like? The heat is incredibly intense. There is molten

:12:31. > :12:34.steel flowing everywhere. The people who work there, 725 people, many

:12:35. > :12:40.have worked there for many years, they know the processes involved but

:12:41. > :12:40.also it is that issue of how potentially dangerous dealing with

:12:41. > :12:43.steel can be. Thank you. For any further developments or

:12:44. > :12:45.updates on this story, instant information through

:12:46. > :12:51.the evening on our website. I'll be back with you

:12:52. > :12:55.in a moment but first the rest of A former butcher has been found

:12:56. > :13:03.guilty of murdering and dismembering a 47-year-old woman

:13:04. > :13:07.at his flat in Pontypridd. 50-year-old Christopher May killed

:13:08. > :13:10.Tracey Woodford in April He then disposed of part

:13:11. > :13:16.of her body in a drain in the town. These CCTV images show

:13:17. > :13:22.the last hours of Tracey Woodford's life, leaving the Skinny Dog pub

:13:23. > :13:28.in Pontypridd with Christopher May. At his flat just round the corner,

:13:29. > :13:30.he strangled her For more than a week,

:13:31. > :13:36.her family have sat in the courtroom listening to details

:13:37. > :13:51.so distressing even police called to The thought and visions of what he

:13:52. > :13:55.did have wanted us every day for the last seven months and it is

:13:56. > :14:00.something we will never get over. A mother has nightmares most nights.

:14:01. > :14:05.Waking up screaming and crying out her name. Asking why would you do

:14:06. > :14:10.this to her? We see the devastation in each other's eyes and know the

:14:11. > :14:13.they are feeling. We know we are helpless to stop the pain. He did

:14:14. > :14:16.not just killed Tracy that night, he killed a part of us all.

:14:17. > :14:18.50-year-old Christopher May claimed he'd acted in self defence after he

:14:19. > :14:23.was attacked by Tracey, who he said he caught stealing from his wallet.

:14:24. > :14:25.It was all a lie, said the prosectuion, to hide what

:14:26. > :14:31.was a brutal, sexually motivated murder of a fragile women.

:14:32. > :14:34.It was when she failed to return home to her family that police

:14:35. > :14:41.When officers went to May's flat, at first he told them that he and

:14:42. > :14:45.Tracey had parted company soon after leaving the pub, but, when officers

:14:46. > :14:50.searched the flat, they discovered some of her remains in the shower.

:14:51. > :14:53.He told them later they could find more remains in this storm drain

:14:54. > :15:00.A major police search was begun in the scrubland around the club

:15:01. > :15:15.He had shown no remorse for his actions of murder, mutilation and

:15:16. > :15:16.dismemberment. After which traces family and friends enjoyed further

:15:17. > :15:21.anguish and torment at the trial. At times, the family said

:15:22. > :15:22.afterwards, listening to the detail was too much to bear,

:15:23. > :15:34.but they did it for Tracey. It took the jury less than an hour

:15:35. > :15:37.to reach their verdict. When it came, some of the family broke down.

:15:38. > :15:41.The judge thanked them for their dignity throughout the case and told

:15:42. > :15:43.may he would be sentenced on Friday. The jury has been discharged

:15:44. > :15:45.in the manslaughter trial of a landlord from Prestatyn who

:15:46. > :15:48.owned a property where a family Jay Liptrot pleaded guilty to

:15:49. > :15:54.a lesser charge of failing to take reasonable precautions to protect

:15:55. > :15:57.people from fire. The prosecution say they accepted

:15:58. > :16:01.the plea after consulting Jay Liptrot, seen here at

:16:02. > :16:08.an earlier hearing, was praised for his leadership as one of the first

:16:09. > :16:12.firefighters to arrive at Maes y Groes in October 2012 to tackle the

:16:13. > :16:17.blaze at one of his 11 properties. The fire had been started

:16:18. > :16:20.deliberately by Melanie Smith, who lived in the flat downstairs,

:16:21. > :16:22.after a long-running dispute with Lee Anna Shiers, her partner

:16:23. > :16:27.Liam Timbrell, their 15-month-old son Charlie and Miss Shiers's

:16:28. > :16:31.4-year-old nephew Bailey and 2-year-old niece Skye all died after

:16:32. > :16:36.being trapped in the building. Melanie Smith was jailed

:16:37. > :16:39.for a minium of 30 years. The court heard yesterday

:16:40. > :16:41.at the start of Mr Liptrot's manslaughter trial that he had

:16:42. > :16:44.failed to install a fire door which would have bought the victims

:16:45. > :16:46.valuable minutes of safety Today, though, the jury was

:16:47. > :16:51.discharged when the prosecution accepted Mr Liptrot's gulity plea

:16:52. > :16:54.to the lesser count of failing to take precautions which exposed

:16:55. > :16:59.people to risk of death from fire. It came following discussions with

:17:00. > :17:02.relatives of the five victims. He will be sentenced at

:17:03. > :17:07.Caernarfon Crowun Court on Friday. Europe's biggest Kickstarter

:17:51. > :17:57.died suddenly at the age of 40. The Welsh rugby captain Sam

:17:58. > :18:02.Warburton has said that Lomu was the A true legend of rugby

:18:03. > :18:12.and an adopted Welshman. On Max Boyce's sofa warming up to

:18:13. > :18:15.the Rugby World Cup just a few months ago Jonah Lomu spoke

:18:16. > :18:20.of his love for Wales. The welcome that

:18:21. > :18:23.the Welsh give me every time I come here is phenomenal and, for myself,

:18:24. > :18:27.I call it a home away from home Bringing my two sons over

:18:28. > :18:35.and trying to explain to them, From the age of 14, Jonah Lomu was

:18:36. > :18:46.managed by Phil Kingsley Jones. The New Zealander grew very close

:18:47. > :18:49.to the Welsh family and was like a brother to Phil's son, the current

:18:50. > :18:54.Newport Gwent Dragons head coach. He was very much part

:18:55. > :18:57.of the family for a long time and my father's relationship with

:18:58. > :19:01.him was like father and son, so it's hit me that I won't meet

:19:02. > :19:07.Jonah again and it is a sad day He was a great guy

:19:08. > :19:14.and will be sadly missed. The destructive 18-stone winger

:19:17. > :19:20.terrorising the English defence, scoring four tries during the World

:19:21. > :19:25.Cup semifinal in South Africa. He opened the game up to non-rugby

:19:26. > :19:30.supporters but, on the field, he was just a phenomenal player,

:19:31. > :19:33.like nothing we'd ever seen before Lomu,

:19:34. > :19:39.who scored 37 tries in 64 matches for New Zealand, was diagnosed with

:19:40. > :19:44.a rare and serious kidney disorder. Lomu bounced back and was snapped

:19:45. > :19:53.up by the Cardiff Blues. In a man of the match performance,

:19:57. > :20:05.arrived here, Not only his size

:20:06. > :20:12.and his presence but everything he did, the way he conducted himself,

:20:13. > :20:16.he was so inspirational. With players in the dressing room,

:20:17. > :20:21.on the field. The very first game he had here,

:20:22. > :20:25.the sold out signs went up That has never been achieved

:20:26. > :20:31.before or since. Gareth Thomas is 16

:20:32. > :20:33.and a half stone. A rugby player with unrivalled

:20:34. > :20:36.strength, speed and power remembered for

:20:37. > :20:43.his qualities on and off the pitch. Jonah Lomu, who's died

:20:44. > :20:48.at the age of 40. Time for a look

:20:49. > :20:50.at the weather forecast. Still windy outside, Derek.

:20:51. > :20:53.What's in store? Not quite so stormy today

:20:54. > :20:56.but still very windy. This picture from one of our Weather

:20:57. > :20:59.Weathers shows big waves crashing The weather station at Mumbles Head

:21:00. > :21:05.recorded a gust of 58mph. The strongest winds today in the

:21:06. > :21:09.north west with a gusts of 85mph The reason for today's unsettled

:21:10. > :21:15.weather is this low pressure tracking across Scotland,

:21:16. > :21:20.with a cold front moving south east So a very blustery evening

:21:21. > :21:23.with gale-force gusts. The wind slowly easing with lowest

:21:24. > :21:28.temperatures between 8 Tomorrow's chart shows

:21:29. > :21:34.a wriggly weather front lying close to the south coast of England

:21:35. > :21:37.bringing rain to southern counties. There is a risk of rain at times

:21:38. > :21:43.in the south. The best of the weather

:21:44. > :21:47.in the north. Temperatures lower than today, 9 to

:21:48. > :21:50.12 Celsius, but the wind lighter. Tomorrow evening and overnight, a

:21:51. > :21:54.risk of further rain in the south. The north dry and a slightly

:21:55. > :21:58.colder night with lighter winds. On Friday,

:21:59. > :22:02.the wind will turn to the north west Some sunshine but a few showers

:22:03. > :22:07.as well. Things turning wintry

:22:08. > :22:09.on high ground in the north. Maybe a little snow on the Berwyn

:22:10. > :22:12.mountains. Cold Arctic winds will sweep across

:22:13. > :22:18.the whole of the UK by the end of the week and that means we are going

:22:19. > :22:23.to see a big drop in temperature. Instead of 15 Celsius, 6 will be

:22:24. > :22:28.nearer the mark over the weekend. Friday night into Saturday,

:22:29. > :22:35.cold and windy. Most of the showers in the north

:22:36. > :22:44.and west, falling as snow on higher ground and

:22:45. > :22:48.feeling very cold in the wind, so Thank, Derek.

:22:49. > :22:56.That's it from me. Let's return to Jamie now who's

:23:16. > :23:21.their serious incident response. The police and the Health and Safety

:23:22. > :23:25.Executive are already investigating what happened here at 10:30

:23:26. > :23:29.this morning. Vaughan Gething is

:23:30. > :23:44.the local Assembly Member. No, what is in the public domain is

:23:45. > :23:47.a limit of what we know and what we should know because the first point

:23:48. > :23:50.is we want to send our thoughts to the families of the deceased and

:23:51. > :23:55.those four people treated at the hospital. It is such a huge issue

:23:56. > :24:00.because steel-making hazarded big footprint in today's Cardiff but

:24:01. > :24:03.also the history of steel-making means that our extra families who

:24:04. > :24:09.will be directly affected by what has happened today. In my surprise

:24:10. > :24:14.people watching on Anglesey or west Wales at Cardiff as a steelworks in

:24:15. > :24:16.the middle of the city. There are thousands of retired steel workers

:24:17. > :24:22.and their families who will be watching today's news with real

:24:23. > :24:25.trepidation and loss. This site had a good safety record so the fact

:24:26. > :24:30.that two people will not be going home after work today will have a

:24:31. > :24:34.real impact in the broader community. A devastating loss for

:24:35. > :24:38.the families. Have you spoken to the management here? We have been in

:24:39. > :24:41.touch with them through the day. I'll be in touch with them through

:24:42. > :24:45.the week to understand what has happened and what support I can

:24:46. > :24:50.offer as a representative by one steel-making to a future in Wales

:24:51. > :24:55.with a safe future so that is important to understand what

:24:56. > :24:59.happened today. This is your constituency, the feeling from the

:25:00. > :25:02.community after today? A very real sense of loss and it is hard to

:25:03. > :25:07.overstate just how upset people are about it. The fact that it is not

:25:08. > :25:12.just people who've lost their lives, their workmates will be coming to

:25:13. > :25:16.work in the future and how it will affect them. A really tragic day for

:25:17. > :25:19.the workforce here and the wider community across Cardiff. Thank you.

:25:20. > :25:22.Let me take you over to the hospital now, where the

:25:23. > :25:31.Steffan Messenger is at University Hospital of Wales

:25:32. > :25:45.Two of the four casualties brought here to the university hospital of

:25:46. > :25:49.Wales remain in the care of trauma teams. We are told they have minor

:25:50. > :25:55.injuries. Two other patients have been discharged. The hospital stood

:25:56. > :25:59.down major incident protocol that has been in place earlier today. The

:26:00. > :26:03.health board has thanked all the staff involved in the care of these

:26:04. > :26:07.tragedies. They say the care has been professional and efficient.

:26:08. > :26:10.They also sent their condolences to all those affected by today's tragic

:26:11. > :26:17.events at the steelworks. Our reporter Rebecca John

:26:18. > :26:32.has been here all day. Within the last hour, it's emerged

:26:33. > :26:36.that two people have been discharged in hospital but the worst news was

:26:37. > :26:40.announced here confirmed by police fire and ambulance just over an hour

:26:41. > :26:45.ago. They emerge from the site to confirm that two people lost their

:26:46. > :26:48.lives in work here this morning. The company has extended its deepest

:26:49. > :26:52.sympathies, it's thoughts are with those affected and their families

:26:53. > :26:59.and said its utmost priority is to support all those who have been

:27:00. > :27:04.affected. A terrible day. A major incident. We saw rows of ambulances

:27:05. > :27:06.and Fire Services and the worst news was confirmed within the last hour.

:27:07. > :27:09.Thank you. Tonight, the ambulances

:27:10. > :27:11.and helicopter have left. The police and health

:27:12. > :27:14.and safety investigators are already beginning their painstaking work,

:27:15. > :27:18.piecing together exactly what when

:27:19. > :27:24.an explosion ripped through Celsa We'll have an update at 8pm

:27:25. > :27:42.and after the BBC News at Ten. That's Wales Today.

:27:43. > :27:44.Thank you for watching. From all of us on the programme,

:27:45. > :27:49.good evening.
