0:00:00 > 0:00:00you can

0:00:00 > 0:00:01you can see

0:00:13 > 0:00:13Good evening.

0:00:13 > 0:00:17Office for National Statistics staff in Newport are anxious that

0:00:17 > 0:00:20a government review will lead to jobs leaving South Wales.

0:00:20 > 0:00:23That's according to the union which represents them.

0:00:23 > 0:00:26Sir Charlie Bean, who's in charge of the review, will publish

0:00:26 > 0:00:29his initial findings next week.

0:00:29 > 0:00:33We were caught in a blizzard of stats this week as the Chancellor

0:00:33 > 0:00:36delivered his spending review, showering us all with fractions,

0:00:36 > 0:00:39percentages and decimals.

0:00:39 > 0:00:42But just how reliable is this type of data?

0:00:42 > 0:00:46It's not just the comfort people are choosing but the look as well.

0:00:46 > 0:00:49At George Osborne's request, that's the question this man is

0:00:49 > 0:00:52trying to put to bed.

0:00:52 > 0:00:55Sir Charlie Bean began his review into the production of

0:00:55 > 0:00:58UK statistics nearly four months ago.

0:00:58 > 0:01:01As the UK's primary source of economic data Sir Charlie's review

0:01:01 > 0:01:04will focus on the Office of National Statistics and its Newport base.

0:01:04 > 0:01:07This is where two thirds of the organisation's staff have been

0:01:07 > 0:01:11based since for the past few years since a relocation programme

0:01:11 > 0:01:16carried out and so there's a degree of concern here now

0:01:16 > 0:01:19for the future.

0:01:19 > 0:01:22There is some anxiety obviously.

0:01:22 > 0:01:24We have 2,000 people working here at Newport ONS,

0:01:24 > 0:01:27600 working directly on economic statistics.

0:01:27 > 0:01:31That's what Charlie Bean's review is looking at.

0:01:31 > 0:01:34We would strongly oppose any proposal to transfer work

0:01:34 > 0:01:37or jobs from Newport.

0:01:37 > 0:01:39In recent times the ONS has been criticised

0:01:39 > 0:01:43for the quality of its work and some have questioned the decision to take

0:01:43 > 0:01:46so many workers out of London.

0:01:46 > 0:01:51There has been a continuous barrage of criticism of the ONS in Newport

0:01:51 > 0:01:54since it first came, especially from the establishment

0:01:54 > 0:01:57of statisticians in London who wanted everything

0:01:57 > 0:02:00in the capital city.

0:02:00 > 0:02:04Sir Charlie Bean has previously suggested he thinks the ONS'

0:02:04 > 0:02:07performance has deteriorated and the relocation to Newport

0:02:07 > 0:02:11came at a cost, one that can't be recovered by simply

0:02:11 > 0:02:13moving everyone back to London.

0:02:13 > 0:02:17And though he will look at expanding the London-based team

0:02:17 > 0:02:24he's also said Newport could become a hotspot of statistical expertise.

0:02:24 > 0:02:26Meanwhile, the ONS told us it

0:02:26 > 0:02:28"welcomed the Bean review as an opportunity

0:02:28 > 0:02:32"to review systems and processes for measuring the changing economy"

0:02:32 > 0:02:35and the organisation "looks forward to reading the interim report

0:02:35 > 0:02:40"when it's published on Wednesday."

0:02:40 > 0:02:43And you can hear more on that story on Sunday Politics

0:02:43 > 0:02:48Wales, tomorrow morning at 11 o'clock on BBC One Wales.

0:02:48 > 0:02:52As the debate over British military intervention in Syria intensifies,

0:02:52 > 0:02:55Plaid Cymru's leader has said the Prime Minister has failed to

0:02:55 > 0:02:56make the case for air strikes.

0:02:56 > 0:03:00Leanne Wood says she won't support action unless David Cameron

0:03:00 > 0:03:02addresses "outstanding questions."

0:03:02 > 0:03:05Plaid, who have three MPs, say he's failed to deliver

0:03:05 > 0:03:10a comprehensive plan which is backed fully by the UN.

0:03:10 > 0:03:12For the first time today, members of the public have been

0:03:12 > 0:03:16allowed in to the new ?50 million arts centre in Bangor.

0:03:16 > 0:03:19Pontio, which also houses the University's students' union,

0:03:19 > 0:03:23was due to open its doors over a year ago but has been blighted

0:03:23 > 0:03:27by delays and rising costs.

0:03:27 > 0:03:31Once we feel people are coming in here and taking ownership of the

0:03:31 > 0:03:35place for themselves, they find something relevant to them here.

0:03:35 > 0:03:39The cinema is back in Bangor at last. Hallelujah!

0:03:39 > 0:03:42That is something we're all looking forward to,

0:03:42 > 0:03:46and Theatr Bryn Terfel of course will open its doors next week.

0:03:46 > 0:03:48So something for everybody, I hope.

0:03:48 > 0:03:51The pink pavilion which has housed the main stage

0:03:51 > 0:03:54at the National Eisteddfod for the past ten years is to be replaced.

0:03:54 > 0:03:57The festival's organisers say the new Evolution structure is more

0:03:57 > 0:04:00sturdy and will offer a better experience for everyone at next

0:04:00 > 0:04:03year's Eisteddfod in Abergavenny.

0:04:03 > 0:04:04Rugby.

0:04:04 > 0:04:07In the Pro12, the Ospreys fought back to beat the Cardiff Blues

0:04:07 > 0:04:0913-6 at the Liberty Stadium.

0:04:09 > 0:04:12A try from Alun Wyn Jones proved to be the turning point, with

0:04:12 > 0:04:14Sam Davies kicking two penalties.

0:04:14 > 0:04:19The Blues captain Sam Warburton limped off with an ankle injury.

0:04:19 > 0:04:20Football.

0:04:20 > 0:04:21In the Championship, Cardiff City have drawn 2-2

0:04:21 > 0:04:23against Burnley at home.

0:04:23 > 0:04:26An own goal by Matthew Connolly gave the visitors the draw

0:04:26 > 0:04:27in the 90th minute.

0:04:27 > 0:04:29In League Two, it was Newport County's first win

0:04:29 > 0:04:32in five games, beating Luton 3-0.

0:04:32 > 0:04:36In the National League, Wrexham lost 3-2 to Macclesfield Town.

0:04:37 > 0:04:39Time for the weather now.

0:04:39 > 0:04:42It's been a day of heavy rain and strong winds with gales on the

0:04:42 > 0:04:44coast and there's more on the way.

0:04:44 > 0:04:46Rain again tonight and staying windy.

0:04:46 > 0:04:49Tomorrow, it's not looking much better either.

0:04:49 > 0:04:52Watch out for any gales inland with even worse winds on the hills

0:04:52 > 0:04:54and along the coasts.

0:04:54 > 0:04:58It'll stay mild though with highs of around 12 Celsius.

0:04:59 > 0:05:00That's Wales Today.
