:00:07. > :00:07.Welcome to Wales Today. Tonight's headlinesP:

:00:08. > :00:10.Keith Hughes is sentenced to life in prison for attempted murder.

:00:11. > :00:12.He strangled his fiance and left her for dead on Gower.

:00:13. > :00:15.Stacey Gwylim said, "the mental scars will always be

:00:16. > :00:18."there and I think a part of me died out on that coastal path."

:00:19. > :00:22.As services for patients with obsessive compulsive disorder are

:00:23. > :00:26.criticised as woefully inadequate, a father's battle for treatment

:00:27. > :00:46.She is a prisoner to the illness, in terms of her whole day, other than a

:00:47. > :00:48.couple of hours, is spent preparing, cleaning, in readiness for eating.

:00:49. > :00:53.attracting more foreign companies to invest here.

:00:54. > :00:57.Can Garry Monk turn around Swansea's season

:00:58. > :01:00.against Leicester tomorrow after just one win in 10 league games?

:01:01. > :01:04.And the skate park under threat given a lifeline from one of

:01:05. > :01:32."A part of me died that day" - the words of a woman attacked and left

:01:33. > :01:36.Keith Hughes strangled Stacey Gwilym after getting into an argument

:01:37. > :01:38.while they were walking on the Gower peninsula.

:01:39. > :01:41.He tried to hide her body in undergrowth near the cliff edge.

:01:42. > :01:50.Today he was jailed for life. Ben Price was in court.

:01:51. > :01:57.On the surface, they were the happy couple. But this was a deeply

:01:58. > :02:02.troubled relationship. Keith Hughes and Stacey Gwylim had been together

:02:03. > :02:06.before but in 2013, he was jailed for three days after attacking her.

:02:07. > :02:11.When he was released, they got engaged. Barbara Roche and ship

:02:12. > :02:17.broke down again. Hughes begged for her to go for a walk to persuade her

:02:18. > :02:24.to get back with him. Keep Hughes and Stacey Gwylim were walking along

:02:25. > :02:31.this path. They started arguing and when things became heated, Hughes

:02:32. > :02:36.strangled her. When she became unconscious, he tried to hide her

:02:37. > :02:43.body off the path, Lviv -- using leas to cover it. He took the car

:02:44. > :02:47.and left her for dead. When she came to, she crawled out of the

:02:48. > :02:53.undergrowth, she was taken to hospital and put in a medically

:02:54. > :02:57.induced coma for 14 days. She still walks with a stick and doesn't know

:02:58. > :03:14.if she will ever recover. Today, in court, and impact statement was read

:03:15. > :03:22.on her behalf. I will never fully trust a man again. Stacey Gwylim

:03:23. > :03:26.wasn't in court but her family left after hearing the judge described

:03:27. > :03:32.the person who beat their loved one as a man with a volcanic temper. In

:03:33. > :03:34.sentencing, the judge said he considered it such a serious offence

:03:35. > :03:39.that life imprisonment was appropriate. Keith Hughes will serve

:03:40. > :03:43.eight and a half years in jail before he is even considered for

:03:44. > :03:47.release. The judge said that will only happen if he proves himself to

:03:48. > :03:50.be no longer a danger to the public or any future partners.

:03:51. > :03:53.Rhian Bowen Davies is the National Advisor for Violence Against Women,

:03:54. > :03:58.Keith Hughes had been jailed for previous attacks on Stacey Gwylim.

:03:59. > :04:01.Could improvements be made to protect victims

:04:02. > :04:18.I think certainly here in Wales, with the injured duo chunk of the

:04:19. > :04:24.new act, we do need to improve arrangements for the protection and

:04:25. > :04:28.support of individuals. One of the key is should any individual be

:04:29. > :04:32.experiencing any form of fires, they can go to a professional who is

:04:33. > :04:36.confident and has the skills to respond to a disclosure and is able

:04:37. > :04:42.to access support for that individual. The introduction of the

:04:43. > :04:46.National training framework for the extra few years will provide us with

:04:47. > :04:49.more opportunity to respond to individuals. We need to ensure we

:04:50. > :04:55.have specialist support revision available across Wales survey can

:04:56. > :05:01.access high-quality support when they have made that disclosure and

:05:02. > :05:09.that call for support. This case does show how complex abusive

:05:10. > :05:19.relationships can be? All forms of domestic abuse have underlying

:05:20. > :05:23.control. This individual had a lot of control over another and that's

:05:24. > :05:28.make things difficult. It affects self, self-respect, and where and

:05:29. > :05:32.how you are going to live without the abuser, that is one of the

:05:33. > :05:39.greatest things we have to do is improve that. How much the problem

:05:40. > :05:44.is in Wales? It can affect anybody. It affects families and individuals

:05:45. > :05:50.across Wales. The police received 47,000 reports of domestic abuse

:05:51. > :05:54.last year so it can occur in any community and any street in Wales.

:05:55. > :05:57.There is a national helpline number for anyone who may be

:05:58. > :06:05.It's a condition which affects around one in 50 people.

:06:06. > :06:08.But a mental health expert in obsessive compulsive disorder

:06:09. > :06:10.says patients in Wales are suffering unnecessarily

:06:11. > :06:15.Professor Paul Salkovskis, who leads a specialist unit

:06:16. > :06:18.in Bristol, has described provision here as woefully inadequate.

:06:19. > :06:21.The Welsh Government says it expects all Welsh health boards to be able

:06:22. > :06:30.to offer appropriate care, as Caroline Evans reports.

:06:31. > :06:39.It is an anxiety related condition sometimes associated with compulsive

:06:40. > :06:48.cleaning. A mental health problem regarded as relatively common but it

:06:49. > :06:55.can be extreme. This daughter is 26. She is a prisoner in terms of a

:06:56. > :06:59.whole day, more or less, other than a couple of hours, is spent either

:07:00. > :07:09.preparing, cleaning, in readiness for eating. Or cleaning herself.

:07:10. > :07:14.Speaking on her behalf, her father told us that at 13, she was told her

:07:15. > :07:18.symptoms were part of growing up. Then she was diagnosed with

:07:19. > :07:22.anorexia. But it was another six years before she was diagnosed with

:07:23. > :07:28.OCD and is still receiving no treatment for the condition. It is

:07:29. > :07:33.the paranoia that rules her life. It prevents any access to social

:07:34. > :07:39.activities, work, she would ideally like to have a job. But at the

:07:40. > :07:50.moment, she can't. The BBC recently won an award for its coverage of the

:07:51. > :07:53.condition in this programme. One expert from England warned that

:07:54. > :08:01.patients in Wales are being let down. It concerns me that we are

:08:02. > :08:04.seeing patients with the much more rudimentary type of treatment than

:08:05. > :08:08.we are offering would have solved their problems before they got to us

:08:09. > :08:13.of being missed. I am seeing that more with Welsh patients than I am

:08:14. > :08:18.with patients from Scotland, Ireland and England. The Welsh government

:08:19. > :08:22.says ?600 million a year is spent on mental health and expects all health

:08:23. > :08:27.boards and mental health service providers to be able to offer

:08:28. > :08:34.appropriate interventions. Four of the seven health balls who commented

:08:35. > :08:41.to the BBC told us they do employ experts to deal with a number of

:08:42. > :08:44.conditions, including OCD. In the TV programme, the character does get

:08:45. > :08:51.better and learns to live with his OCD.

:08:52. > :08:54.The relative of a woman who was imprisoned by her own father,

:08:55. > :08:56.Aravindan Balakrishnan, has said she feels hatred towards him.

:08:57. > :09:00.Eleri Morgan, a cousin of the victim and her mother

:09:01. > :09:05.Sian Davies, from Tregaron, has told BBC Wales that the Maoist cult

:09:06. > :09:09.leader forbid any contact between Sian and her family in Ceredigion.

:09:10. > :09:13.Sian Davies was a follower of his cult for two decades.

:09:14. > :09:16.She died after falling out of a window in 1997.

:09:17. > :09:25.Balakrishnan was convicted today of a string of sexual assaults.

:09:26. > :09:34.Out of the blue in July 1996, she rang me. I was so shocked, I wasn't

:09:35. > :09:41.quite sure to begin with. She said this is sharp here. I happen to know

:09:42. > :09:46.several girls called Sian. She said it is your cousin. We spoke for a

:09:47. > :09:54.while and I thought, keep her talking. She wanted to find out

:09:55. > :10:00.about the family. I did ask where are you? She wouldn't say. I said,

:10:01. > :10:06.can we meet, somewhere mutual? Go for a cup of tea. She said she would

:10:07. > :10:12.ring me back and she never did. I think it was the beginning of her

:10:13. > :10:13.wanting to come back to the family, really.

:10:14. > :10:16.You can hear the full interview with Eleri Morgan on Newyddion Naw,

:10:17. > :10:21.Cardiff Council is planning to increase the cost of school meals

:10:22. > :10:24.by 10p, cut arts funding, and put up council tax by 4.5%

:10:25. > :10:29.The local authority - which is the largest in Wales -

:10:30. > :10:32.said it needed innovative new ways of working, in order to plug

:10:33. > :10:40.The plans will now go out to consultation, with a final decision

:10:41. > :10:45.Arriva Trains Wales are warning passengers there may be some

:10:46. > :10:48.disruption to services over the weekend, due to the weather.

:10:49. > :10:51.Meanwhile, emergency services have been taking part in an operation

:10:52. > :10:55.on the River Dee after it burst its banks at Holt near Wrexham

:10:56. > :11:00.Around 70 properties on both sides of the border have

:11:01. > :11:09.been at risk of flooding with some cut off by the water.

:11:10. > :11:18.At the moment, the river levels have levelled off, they haven't risen for

:11:19. > :11:21.a day, overnight now. The -- that there is another weather front

:11:22. > :11:27.coming in, plenty of rain coming down over the Welsh hills and for up

:11:28. > :11:31.to 12 hours after that, we will see the water levels rise again.

:11:32. > :11:41.The Vice Chancellor of Aberystwyth at University will step down. She

:11:42. > :11:45.refused to delegations that the university was being run like a

:11:46. > :11:48.dictatorship following alleged staff suspensions. She says she is

:11:49. > :11:49.immensely proud of the work she has done there.

:11:50. > :11:52.Wales appears to be bucking the trend in attracting jobs

:11:53. > :11:57.That's according to analysis for BBC Wales.

:11:58. > :12:00.The latest official figures show a sharp fall in investment

:12:01. > :12:02.in the UK by foreign owned companies between 2012 and 2014 .

:12:03. > :12:06.But economists at Cardiff University say

:12:07. > :12:08.their research shows steady growth in projects here over the past year

:12:09. > :12:13.Our economics correspondent Sarah Dickins

:12:14. > :12:15.and our business correspondent Brian Meechan now on the advantages

:12:16. > :12:32.To begin ploys here in Wales. One is home grown, the other is from

:12:33. > :12:36.Germany. Which one should Wales prioritise? It may seem like an

:12:37. > :12:42.unlikely location for one of the world's biggest companies. Siemens

:12:43. > :12:49.health care employs 40,000 people world wide, including many jobs in

:12:50. > :12:52.Snowdonia. It is one of the biggest suppliers of technology to the

:12:53. > :12:56.health sector and its tests are used to analyse blood and diagnose

:12:57. > :13:03.medical conditions. This facility began operating in 1992. Around

:13:04. > :13:08.seven years ago, there was a major investment which saw the creation of

:13:09. > :13:13.150 jobs. It plays a major role in the local area here and in the wider

:13:14. > :13:16.Welsh economy. In most of these multinational companies, there is

:13:17. > :13:20.competition between different parts of them in different companies, in

:13:21. > :13:28.order to secure investment from the parent group. They work closely with

:13:29. > :13:31.local businesses. We spend ?10 million per year, 36% of that

:13:32. > :13:38.spenders with companies in North Wales and 24% of that is with

:13:39. > :13:42.companies within a 60 mile radius. So, it is a very strong

:13:43. > :13:46.relationship. We are important to the local economy but the local

:13:47. > :13:51.economy is very important to our success going forward. Siemens

:13:52. > :13:54.health care has come and stayed but for those who think we should focus

:13:55. > :13:58.less on getting multinational companies to invest in Wales, the

:13:59. > :14:02.concern is that the profits leave and decisions are made elsewhere. If

:14:03. > :14:07.they are not grounded here, they could easily move business to

:14:08. > :14:10.another country. The bread may be whizzing along the production lines

:14:11. > :14:15.but this company isn't moving anywhere. They have been making

:14:16. > :14:20.loads in the Gwent valleys for 113 years. They are part of our economy.

:14:21. > :14:26.This is still a family owned business. It spread is sold across

:14:27. > :14:31.the UK and is even exported to France by a French chain of sandwich

:14:32. > :14:35.shops. Its biggest proportion of customers is still here in Wales and

:14:36. > :14:40.the many millions spend stays in the Welsh economy. Two thirds of its

:14:41. > :14:45.workers live within ten miles. You look at my pay roll, it is ?9

:14:46. > :14:50.million a year that I put back into the local community. All the outside

:14:51. > :14:55.services, not just in the bakery, whether it be lawyers within Wales,

:14:56. > :15:00.whether it be other services on a professional services, we use those

:15:01. > :15:04.locally as well. Even the way bread is made has changed in the last 20

:15:05. > :15:07.years. Some would argue Wales needs foreign investors to bring in new

:15:08. > :15:13.skills and techniques. What does this economist think? Investment

:15:14. > :15:18.from overseas companies and investment in Welsh companies, which

:15:19. > :15:21.side would you come down on? That is a difficult question that I see the

:15:22. > :15:26.advantages we get from foreign-owned investment in Wales. Again, we would

:15:27. > :15:34.like to maximise the benefits. It helps fill the capital gap and also

:15:35. > :15:39.the new technology, the new ways of working, there are a lot of positive

:15:40. > :15:43.that we can see. Attracting more companies into Wales can kick-start

:15:44. > :15:48.new companies. While Biber and Welsh owned companies keep more cash

:15:49. > :15:52.within Wales, most economists agree you need a bit of both.

:15:53. > :15:57.The campaign to save this skate park in Swansea.

:15:58. > :16:00.And be prepared to be blown around this weekend as we do have some

:16:01. > :16:07.Well, let's head straight to the sport now.

:16:08. > :16:12.Skateboarding, football and rugby. Tomos has all the latest for us.

:16:13. > :16:14.The Swansea City manager Garry Monk says he's held open

:16:15. > :16:20.He's trying to turn around their poor recent run of results which has

:16:21. > :16:23.seen the Swans win only one of their last 10 league matches.

:16:24. > :16:27.Swansea take on Leicester tomorrow who are second

:16:28. > :16:31.in the league, helped largely by the goals of Jamie Vardy who scored in

:16:32. > :16:34.a record-breaking 11th consecutive Premier League game last weekend.

:16:35. > :16:39.But Monk says he plans to end that amazing goal-scoring

:16:40. > :16:53.Our club will appreciate a story like that as well so full credit to

:16:54. > :16:56.him but it is our job to put an end of that story. I am sure our

:16:57. > :17:02.defenders will be thinking about that going into the game. We have

:17:03. > :17:07.prepared to try to counteract their strengths and concentrate our -- one

:17:08. > :17:11.hours. It will be a difficult game. They are at the top of the league,

:17:12. > :17:14.doing exceptionally well. They are very much not to be underestimated.

:17:15. > :17:17.It's FA Cup weekend and Newport County play Barnet tomorrow

:17:18. > :17:19.a win would see them in the third round draw when the

:17:20. > :17:23.Striker Oliver McBurnie, who scored a hat-trick

:17:24. > :17:25.on his debut last weekend after joining on loan from Swansea,

:17:26. > :17:29.In the Championship, Cardiff face bottom side Bolton.

:17:30. > :17:32.Elsewhere, Wes York, whose Wrexham side travels to Torquay tomorrow,

:17:33. > :17:35.has apologised to manager Gary Mills after pleading guilty at

:17:36. > :17:39.Chester Magistrates Court to being drunk and disorderly last month.

:17:40. > :17:42.Rugby, and the Wales and Ospreys fly-half Dan Biggar has signed

:17:43. > :17:47.He agreed his first dual contract in March.

:17:48. > :17:51.This new deal has an option which could see him stay

:17:52. > :17:58.This is the BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park where both Rhys Patchell and

:17:59. > :18:02.Alex Cuthbert will return tonight for the Blues after injuries.

:18:03. > :18:05.They're up against Pro 12 leaders Connacht.

:18:06. > :18:11.The game's live on Scrum V Live tonight at 7pm, over on BBC 2 Wales.

:18:12. > :18:15.The Scarlets, second in the table, having won seven

:18:16. > :18:18.of their opening eight games, take on Treviso tomorrow.

:18:19. > :18:22.Next season, they'll be able to call on the talents of Jonathan Davies.

:18:23. > :18:26.The Wales centre will be rejoining the region from Clermont Auvergne.

:18:27. > :18:31.He says he could not have joined any Welsh region other than

:18:32. > :18:46.There is no other club. I couldn't play for any other region. That is

:18:47. > :18:50.who I grew up supporting. Playing for them for eight years, you get a

:18:51. > :18:56.sense that who ever played fullback loved it. For me, growing up, I

:18:57. > :19:03.remember Mike dad taking us to watch them when growing up. My mum said I

:19:04. > :19:05.didn't look good in a black Ospreys jersey so I think she was making

:19:06. > :19:07.that decision, really. More from Jonathan Davies on Sport

:19:08. > :19:11.Wales at 9pm on BBC Two Wales. Now,

:19:12. > :19:13.a skate park in Swansea in desperate need of cash is being helped

:19:14. > :19:16.by one of the leading skateboarding Skin Phillips manages

:19:17. > :19:22.a skate-boarding team in San Diego but has come home to see

:19:23. > :19:24.his work auctioned to raise money. I'm joined by the

:19:25. > :19:33.Adidas World Skateboarding team. Here we have some

:19:34. > :19:36.of the best boarders in the World. They are managed by

:19:37. > :19:38.Welshman Skin Phillips. Now 60 of his pictures are going

:19:39. > :19:41.on sale here at the Volcano Theatre The profits will go towards

:19:42. > :20:01.keeping The Swansea Exist A front side, and knows grind, and

:20:02. > :20:06.inward he'll flip, just a taste of the terminology. This skate park is

:20:07. > :20:12.a safe place for skate boarders of all ages to perfect these skills.

:20:13. > :20:15.There is a certain amount of negativity attached to skateboarding

:20:16. > :20:22.and skateboarders and I think it is not justified. Skateboarders will

:20:23. > :20:30.scape in places where they are not supposed to get there is not a place

:20:31. > :20:34.like this. It costs as as well as ?3 per session to skate but it needs at

:20:35. > :20:40.least 30 people a day on the balls to keep the doors open. It is pretty

:20:41. > :20:45.much every day. There is not a day that I don't go by that I don't

:20:46. > :20:50.think about skating. We don't have anywhere else to skate around the

:20:51. > :20:54.area. Closure would be a major blow, according to the skaters.

:20:55. > :20:57.Getting support from the manager of the deed is professional

:20:58. > :21:03.skateboarding team is a huge beast. Skin Phillips is a Swansea boy

:21:04. > :21:04.currently living in San Diego and is one of the most prominent

:21:05. > :21:11.skateboarding photographers in the world. His work will be auctioned

:21:12. > :21:17.tonight with the proceeds going to this facility. Some are covers, some

:21:18. > :21:24.are portraits of skateboarders. It is stuff that skateboarder would

:21:25. > :21:30.want put on their wall. What is special about them? To me, you have

:21:31. > :21:35.to be in it and know it to earn a bit of trust and respect. And that

:21:36. > :21:40.respect is that you portrayed those people in the right way. And when it

:21:41. > :21:44.comes to the grass roots of his sport, Skin Phillips is keen to get

:21:45. > :21:49.behind young talent. The cities have to understand that skateboarding is

:21:50. > :21:55.not going to go away. It needs funding and it needs help. Places

:21:56. > :21:59.like this keep kids off the street. Naturally, you can't leave a skate

:22:00. > :22:03.park without having a go yourself. I think I need a bit more practice.

:22:04. > :22:09.But the least said about that, the better. So, it's a big night for the

:22:10. > :22:13.skaters who are hoping this park will exist for years to come.

:22:14. > :22:24.Forget about my skating. I am told some of the most iconic photographs,

:22:25. > :22:29.like this one, could go this evening 400 and hundreds of pounds. To

:22:30. > :22:33.emphasise how big he is, from January, a special Skin Phillips
