0:00:17 > 0:00:20of people over 60 in Wales who are in abusive relationships.

0:00:20 > 0:00:21And the building's been described as "uninhabitable",

0:00:21 > 0:00:23but migrant workers were crammed in.

0:00:23 > 0:00:28The landlord pleads guilty to twelve offences.

0:00:35 > 0:00:36Good evening.

0:00:36 > 0:00:38Much more needs to be done to support older people

0:00:38 > 0:00:41who are the victims of domestic abuse in Wales.

0:00:41 > 0:00:43That's according to the Older People's Commissioner,

0:00:43 > 0:00:47who says the usual support services are not always appropriate for those

0:00:47 > 0:00:52over 60 in abusive relationships.

0:00:52 > 0:00:54More than 30,000 people in Wales are affected.

0:00:54 > 0:00:56This report from India Pollock.

0:00:56 > 0:00:59It's seldom talked about, but domestic abuse affects at least

0:00:59 > 0:01:0330,000 people over 60 in Wales every year.

0:01:03 > 0:01:05Janine is one of those.

0:01:05 > 0:01:08She says she suffered emotional and physical abuse for years.

0:01:08 > 0:01:11We have changed her name to protect her identity.

0:01:11 > 0:01:14And her words are spoken by a member of our production team.

0:01:14 > 0:01:18The bad times have sort of outweighed the good times now.

0:01:18 > 0:01:21Because that is all you tend to think about and it goes over

0:01:21 > 0:01:23and over in your head.

0:01:23 > 0:01:25And I have been so scared to go out and find somewhere,

0:01:25 > 0:01:28because I just didn't know where to look.

0:01:28 > 0:01:31While Janine has praised the support that she's received,

0:01:31 > 0:01:33the Older People's Commissioner says there are unique issues for older

0:01:33 > 0:01:35people in abusive relationships

0:01:35 > 0:01:37and the services are not always appropriate.

0:01:37 > 0:01:41If you have been married for 30 or 40 years and the option

0:01:41 > 0:01:45you are given is going to a refuge or perhaps to a care home,

0:01:45 > 0:01:47I'm not sure there are many people who would see that

0:01:47 > 0:01:49as being an acceptable alternative.

0:01:49 > 0:01:51Particularly if they have learnt, they shouldn't have had to,

0:01:51 > 0:01:53but they have learnt to live with the abuse.

0:01:53 > 0:01:56We need to find better ways of providing that alternative

0:01:56 > 0:02:01support and response to older people.

0:02:01 > 0:02:03Some charities are calling for designated refuges for older

0:02:03 > 0:02:07people, or specific rooms within existing refuges.

0:02:07 > 0:02:09Back in the day, older women, they tended to put up

0:02:09 > 0:02:13with the abuse.

0:02:13 > 0:02:15It was a taboo subject, people didn't talk about it.

0:02:15 > 0:02:20And there were not places for older people to go

0:02:20 > 0:02:24and sometimes their grown-up children would not support them,

0:02:24 > 0:02:28they would even blame them

0:02:28 > 0:02:29for the breakdown of the relationship.

0:02:29 > 0:02:31And blame them for the abuse.

0:02:31 > 0:02:35Women in the Vale of Glamorgan believe that the abuse of older

0:02:35 > 0:02:36people is hidden.

0:02:36 > 0:02:39You always think of it as being with younger people.

0:02:39 > 0:02:43Teenagers, it's not something you hear much about in older

0:02:43 > 0:02:46people, is it?

0:02:46 > 0:02:50I think it is very sad that they sort of...

0:02:50 > 0:02:53Obviously love the other person and don't want to leave them.

0:02:53 > 0:02:57People are aware of it, but I think they are ashamed of it

0:02:57 > 0:02:58if it is happening to them.

0:02:58 > 0:03:02And they hide their bruises. And they hide their hurt.

0:03:02 > 0:03:05The Welsh Government says they have already developed guidance

0:03:05 > 0:03:07in partnership with the Older People's Commissioner

0:03:07 > 0:03:08and a national training framework as part of

0:03:08 > 0:03:10the Domestic Abuse Act.

0:03:10 > 0:03:13Janine has left the home she lived in for 30 years and is now

0:03:13 > 0:03:16rebuilding her life.

0:03:16 > 0:03:19The hope is that others like her get the support they need

0:03:19 > 0:03:22as soon as possible.

0:03:22 > 0:03:25A row has broken out over plans for a social care provider in

0:03:25 > 0:03:27North Wales to sack its 300 staff and make

0:03:27 > 0:03:29them reapply for their jobs.

0:03:29 > 0:03:31Anheddau Cyf says the current employees will be offered

0:03:31 > 0:03:35new contracts but on reduced terms and conditions.

0:03:35 > 0:03:38It blames underfunding, but the public sector union,

0:03:38 > 0:03:43Unison, has criticised the move and called for further talks.

0:07:38 > 0:07:40Here's Sue Charles.

0:07:40 > 0:07:41Good evening.

0:07:41 > 0:07:45Some heavy downpours over the last 24 hours.

0:07:45 > 0:07:47This cold front, which brought the rain, moving southwards.

0:07:47 > 0:07:50Colder air following behind, but it doesn't clear completely.

0:07:50 > 0:07:53In fact, this waving weather system will dominate our weather

0:07:53 > 0:07:56for the next few days.

0:07:56 > 0:07:58Overnight, a few showers pushing through.

0:07:58 > 0:08:00A brisk westerly wind.

0:08:00 > 0:08:02Some clear spells developing behind the cold front.

0:08:02 > 0:08:04Chillier in the North, 2 or 3 Celsius.

0:08:04 > 0:08:10Less cold in the south, where the cloud lingers.

0:08:10 > 0:08:12Tomorrow, the odd shower possible, but chilly, bright and breezy

0:08:12 > 0:08:15for most of Wales.

0:08:15 > 0:08:17Across the UK, that front brings cloud and patchy

0:08:17 > 0:08:19weather further south.

0:08:19 > 0:08:21Drier and brighter through Wales and most of England.

0:08:21 > 0:08:24Some showers further north, where it is much chillier.

0:08:24 > 0:08:26Wintry in the Highlands.

0:08:26 > 0:08:28Highs of just 4 Celsius in North East Scotland.

0:08:28 > 0:08:3111 in the milder air in South East England.

0:08:31 > 0:08:34A bright afternoon for most of Wales, the odd isolated shower.

0:08:34 > 0:08:39Brisk westerly winds behind that cold front.

0:08:39 > 0:08:41Feeling chillier at 8 Celsius On Anglesey.

0:08:41 > 0:08:4310 in Swansea.

0:08:43 > 0:08:46Tomorrow night starts clear and dry, but it will turn cloudy

0:08:46 > 0:08:48from the southwest again, with that band of rain

0:08:48 > 0:08:49pushing back in.

0:08:49 > 0:08:54Again, colder where it is clearer in the North, with a risk of frost.

0:08:54 > 0:08:58Less cold under the cloud in the south-west.

0:08:58 > 0:09:01Then, after hanging around for a couple of days,

0:09:01 > 0:09:03the same weather system meanders northwards through Saturday

0:09:03 > 0:09:08and into Sunday.

0:09:08 > 0:09:10Further wet and windy weather at times on Saturday.

0:09:10 > 0:09:13Some transient snow on high ground as it hits the colder air.

0:09:13 > 0:09:16But quickly turning to rain again,

0:09:16 > 0:09:21as stronger southerly winds push milder air behind it.

0:09:21 > 0:09:24But, because of the ongoing flood risk, the Met Office has issued

0:09:24 > 0:09:26a weather warning for the rain on Saturday for North West Wales.

0:09:26 > 0:09:29That trailing front could bring some patchy rain on Sunday,

0:09:29 > 0:09:32but by then it is a weakening feature.

0:09:32 > 0:09:35Rather cloudy, maybe some brightness in South.

0:09:35 > 0:09:37So chillier and brighter tomorrow.

0:09:37 > 0:09:40Colder overnight into Saturday, with rain moving northwards

0:09:40 > 0:09:43through Saturday. Easing on Sunday.

0:09:43 > 0:09:51Mild, windy and unsettled into next week.

0:09:51 > 0:09:53We'll have updates from around 6:25 in the morning.

0:09:53 > 0:09:54But that is Wales Today.

0:09:54 > 0:09:56From all of us here, good night.

0:09:56 > 0:10:00Goodbye.
