:00:00. > :00:16.The battle to improve cancer care after the worst miss target figures

:00:17. > :00:21.from one than two years. A 100 day action plan to improve services.

:00:22. > :00:25.Jailed after a road rage attack brash Lewis Evans threatened a

:00:26. > :00:27.couple with an airgun, terrifying their children in the back of the

:00:28. > :00:38.car. For years, health boards have missed

:00:39. > :00:42.targets set for cancer patients who are waiting

:00:43. > :00:45.to receive treatment. Now, after the worst set of figures

:00:46. > :00:50.for two-and-a-half years, the Welsh government has begun

:00:51. > :00:53.what they call a 100-day action plan The cancer charity Macmillan say

:00:54. > :00:58.they've been concerned about the lack of improvement

:00:59. > :01:01.in cancer waiting times. Here's our political

:01:02. > :01:03.editor, Nick Servini. Waiting times for the treatment

:01:04. > :01:05.of cancer are among the most sensitive produced by the NHS

:01:06. > :01:08.and as a result few statistics Figures published today

:01:09. > :01:17.showed that in October, 81% of patients diagnosed

:01:18. > :01:23.with cancer began their treatment And there were

:01:24. > :01:29.significant variations. The Aneurin Bevan board

:01:30. > :01:31.in south-east Wales did While Cardiff and Vale

:01:32. > :01:39.did the worst with 63%. The Welsh Government says

:01:40. > :01:42.the new 100 day plan prepared by health boards will focus

:01:43. > :01:45.on speedier treatment. This month, some of the figures

:01:46. > :01:48.are disappointing. The 100 day plans that the health

:01:49. > :01:50.boards have produced, I asked for them earlier this month

:01:51. > :01:53.so it's not just about reacting It is about saying we need

:01:54. > :02:01.to have a refocus on what we do. We need to set out what we want

:02:02. > :02:06.to improve in a definitive period of time and then look

:02:07. > :02:09.at the long-term future as well. Of all the areas of the NHS

:02:10. > :02:12.the treatment of cancer is often used by Welsh ministers

:02:13. > :02:14.to defend their record on health. Latest figures for England

:02:15. > :02:19.are virtually identical to Wales. But the downward trend over the past

:02:20. > :02:23.few years and the inconsistency among health boards will be

:02:24. > :02:41.a worry for ministers. Many will be acutely aware of the

:02:42. > :02:47.political timetable. This action plan but last 100 days and in 140

:02:48. > :02:51.days, we all go to the polls for the Assembly elections to decide who we

:02:52. > :02:54.want to run the Welsh NHS over the next five years.

:02:55. > :02:56.The cancer charity Macmillan says it is dismayed the waiting

:02:57. > :03:01.If the health boards get it right it's going to make a huge difference

:03:02. > :03:04.to people affected by cancer because when people receive a cancer

:03:05. > :03:06.diagnosis it can be absolutely devastating and one of the issues

:03:07. > :03:09.is that they face a period waiting for their treatment and they can

:03:10. > :03:16.And not just them, their families and friends and those around them.

:03:17. > :03:18.And obviously then the outcome of their cancer can be

:03:19. > :03:21.affected as well if there is a delay to treatment.

:03:22. > :03:24.There has been a huge rise in the number of cancer patients

:03:25. > :03:29.being treated successfully in the Welsh NHS in recent years.

:03:30. > :03:31.The challenge is keeping waiting lists down in the face

:03:32. > :03:38.A 19-year-old man has been jailed for pointing an air gun at a couple

:03:39. > :03:40.and threatening to kill them in their car in

:03:41. > :03:44.Newport Crown Court heard the couple's children were screaming

:03:45. > :03:47.hysterically as their parents feared for their lives.

:03:48. > :03:54.An immature teenager who committed an absolutely stupid act,

:03:55. > :03:59.But what possessed Lewis Sims to threaten this family

:04:00. > :04:06.Back in September - here, near Pontypool -

:04:07. > :04:09.Sims was accused by another motorist of driving dangerously.

:04:10. > :04:13.A scuffle broke out but the pair later parted.

:04:14. > :04:16.Later that day Sims caught up with that driver again as he stopped

:04:17. > :04:24.He dragged the man's partner from the car and threatened them

:04:25. > :04:27.both with a gun as their children sat in the back seat.

:04:28. > :04:30.Police described it as a road rage incident.

:04:31. > :04:33.Gareth Oram was the man Sims threatened to kill that day in front

:04:34. > :04:41.This is his reaction to the sentence of 12 months in prison.

:04:42. > :04:45.Me and my family are quite happy about the sentence because he is

:04:46. > :04:52.a young boy and hopefully he can reflect over the Christmas period

:04:53. > :04:56.and hopefully in the New Year he will come out a different person.

:04:57. > :04:58.This has affected you and your family since though,

:04:59. > :05:02.The children still talk about it now.

:05:03. > :05:08.My five-year-old and three-year-old bring it up quite regularly.

:05:09. > :05:10.To see the reaction of my children with someone waving a gun

:05:11. > :05:15.at their father, which is pretty sickening.

:05:16. > :05:18.I can close my eyes now and still think about it

:05:19. > :05:32.This is the gun police retrieved and that Lewis Sims said he used.

:05:33. > :05:35.But his victims say they think he used another weapon which is yet

:05:36. > :05:40.Lewis Sims is likely to be released in March, when he will have served

:05:41. > :05:44.half of his 12-month custodial sentence.

:05:45. > :05:47.The judge said today he hopes that sends a message to others looking

:05:48. > :05:53.His victims have told me they simply hope he will take this opportunity

:05:54. > :06:01.The number of people out of work in Wales has fallen,

:06:02. > :06:05.with 17,000 fewer people unemployed than a year ago.

:06:06. > :06:07.There are now 88,000 people looking for work -

:06:08. > :06:15.That's higher than the UK rate of 5.2%.

:06:16. > :06:18.An area of Wrexham was evacuated this afternoon as police dealt

:06:19. > :06:21.with an incident at a house in the Caia Park area.

:06:22. > :06:24.Emergency services were called just after lunch and police asked people

:06:25. > :06:28.to stay away from the immediate area.

:06:29. > :06:35.A 26-year-old local man is now in custody.

:06:36. > :06:42.Work on new flood defences in Denbighshire is going ahead next

:06:43. > :06:46.year at the announcement of ?3 million from the Welsh Government.

:06:47. > :06:50.The area was badly hit by flooding three years ago an elderly woman

:06:51. > :06:54.died. There are concerns locally that the work will not be finished

:06:55. > :06:56.for another three years but natural resources Wales say this is a cop

:06:57. > :07:00.located scheme. As you can see, there

:07:01. > :07:02.are houses and gardens close by and we have an old waste tip

:07:03. > :07:06.so we have to do some investigation. There will be a traditional flood

:07:07. > :07:09.bank building but it's not A Welsh-based company and academics

:07:10. > :07:19.from Cardiff University have received funding worth over ?160,000

:07:20. > :07:23.to develop new materials for use They're using a 3D printer to create

:07:24. > :07:32.a multi-layered elastic material that has been described as having

:07:33. > :07:34."game changing" potential. It's part funded by the NFL

:07:35. > :07:38.and the material created in Wales could be used commercially

:07:39. > :07:42.to improve brain protection during high-impact sports

:07:43. > :08:01.like American football. The main thing is the amount of

:08:02. > :08:05.folds and they can dissipate energy and mitigate energy from an impact.

:08:06. > :08:09.Typical sport injury would be one of those impacts and current technology

:08:10. > :08:13.does not deal with non-vertical impacts this material, this new

:08:14. > :08:14.development offers good opportunities to develop that

:08:15. > :08:17.further. Let's take a look at

:08:18. > :08:19.the weather forecast. The mild theme is set to continue

:08:20. > :08:22.over the coming days. A wet start to tomorrow

:08:23. > :08:24.morning and by the afternoon we can look forward

:08:25. > :08:26.to dry, bright conditions but for the rest of tonight,

:08:27. > :08:29.remaining cloudy and any remaining drizzle will fizzle away for a time

:08:30. > :08:32.and by the early hours of tomorrow morning we'll start to see the rain

:08:33. > :08:35.approaching from the west. Tomorrow, we have this cold

:08:36. > :08:39.weather front sweeping across the country and that is

:08:40. > :08:42.going to bring some rain For the rush hour, it is a wet start

:08:43. > :08:49.in the west with brisk winds coming in from a

:08:50. > :08:50.south-westerly reaction. That rain band continues

:08:51. > :08:52.its journey slowly but surely For the rest of the British Isles,

:08:53. > :09:01.we have that front from Scotland right down the south-west

:09:02. > :09:02.of England, sweeping across the country

:09:03. > :09:04.and further south and east, dry and brighter but the rain

:09:05. > :09:08.will reach you later on in the day with highs of 12

:09:09. > :09:10.to about 15 Celsius. A better looking afternoon tomorrow

:09:11. > :09:13.afternoon, some hints of brightness, much dryer and temperatures,

:09:14. > :09:17.12 to about 14 Celsius. Through tomorrow night,

:09:18. > :09:22.we have quite a bit of cloud but remaining dry and perhaps

:09:23. > :09:26.the odd spot if you are unlucky. The bulk of the country

:09:27. > :09:28.will remain dry and mild with those temperatures ranging

:09:29. > :09:30.between ten and 12 Celsius. Feeling less mild, we do have

:09:31. > :09:34.some patchy, light rain or drizzle and highs of 12

:09:35. > :09:38.to about 13 Celsius, still above the average and then

:09:39. > :09:41.we see the return of the milder Dryer with the risk

:09:42. > :09:48.of some showers but also some sunshine and feeling

:09:49. > :09:51.cooler as we head into the second
