:01:57. > :02:02.He said he would do it and they have not done it. I met with them last

:03:14. > :03:20.through the ballot box to get rid of bad law. You cannot do that as a
:03:21. > :03:24.member of this European Union. I say stand up British people, take back
:03:25. > :03:27.our birthright and regain our democracy. What was the reaction

:05:10. > :05:12.With the state of the steel industry featuring heavily in the debate
:05:13. > :05:15.tonight, let's stay with that for a moment, because the price
:05:16. > :05:18.It's a good barometer of the health of the steel industry
:05:19. > :05:23.Scrap steel is only reaching half the price it was fetching this time
:05:24. > :05:25.last year, of great concern because of the thousands of jobs
:05:26. > :05:30.Our Economics Correspondent, Sarah Dickins has the story.
:05:31. > :05:33.In Swansea docks, scrap metal is being prepared for export
:05:34. > :05:37.and usually to the neighbouring steelworks at Porttalbot.
:05:38. > :05:40.It notably buys scrap steel from this site to add
:05:41. > :05:42.to the steel it makes from raw materials.
:05:43. > :05:45.None has been ordered for the first three months of this year.
:05:46. > :05:48.Around the world, the demand for scrap steel fell
:05:49. > :05:56.We have seen cheap Chinese still coming in from China
:05:57. > :06:03.In the UK particularly, they have suffered as a result
:06:04. > :06:13.it's a double whammy, if you like, with cheap Chinese products
:06:14. > :06:14.as well as the electricity tariffs.
:06:15. > :06:17.That has dampened the price of steel scrap down to virtually all-time
:06:18. > :06:20.lows when you take into account annual inflation, where it was.
:06:21. > :06:23.Scrap cars were fetching ?85 per tonne a year ago.
:06:24. > :06:31.Metalis employs 15 people here, handling up to 8,000 tonnes a month.
:06:32. > :06:34.The scrap's graded for different customers.
:06:35. > :06:36.These bundles will be exported to India.
:06:37. > :06:40.Other loads are for Spain and Turkey.
:06:41. > :06:42.This steel to my right here is electrical switch gear
:06:43. > :06:46.We send that for fragmentation, which separates the copper
:06:47. > :06:51.This pile to my left-hand side, this what we're loading up
:06:52. > :06:55.for steel, it's what we call one and two mixed, we send that to Spain
:06:56. > :06:58.The scrap sector employs 1,500 people in Wales,
:06:59. > :07:03.and impacts many different parts of the economy.
:07:04. > :07:06.When economies around the world are feeling strong,
:07:07. > :07:08.confident and optimistic about the future, scrap like this
:07:09. > :07:15.Everybody wants it because it goes into so many commodities.
:07:16. > :07:17.The fact it is so low, the price, now and that there
:07:18. > :07:22.isn't demand across the world suggests we have bumpy months ahead.
:07:23. > :07:27.Many economic forecasters say growth around the world will slow further
:07:28. > :07:31.as the year progresses, hitting scrap and the steel
:07:32. > :07:36.South Wales particularly was the hub of the steel-making sector
:07:37. > :07:39.and relied upon steel scrap as a vital raw material
:07:40. > :07:42.within the steel-making chain so scrap matters absolutely.
:07:43. > :07:46.It is an essential raw material in the manufacturing process.
:07:47. > :07:50.And steel scrap is not the only commodity where prices
:07:51. > :07:55.The same is happening with oil, copper and iron ore,
:07:56. > :08:01.all indicators that economies around the world are weakening.
