:00:49. > :00:54.Cemlyn Davies has this exclusive report.

:00:55. > :00:57.The British steel industry is in crisis.

:00:58. > :00:59.In recent months, thousands of steelworkers have lost their jobs

:01:00. > :01:02.in Scotland and the North of England.

:01:03. > :01:05.And the focus is now on Wales and Port Talbot,

:01:06. > :01:08.where Tata Steel employs thousands of people.

:01:09. > :01:11.The plant is reported to be losing ?1 million a day,

:01:12. > :01:14.and BBC Wales has been told that an announcement on job losses

:01:15. > :01:19.here and across Wales could be made as early as next week.

:01:20. > :01:22.The number of jobs axed is expected to be in the high hundreds,

:01:23. > :01:27.Anthony Taylor is a local councillor who spent 44 years working

:01:28. > :01:34.It is a blow for me as a person, because it's an emotional thing.

:01:35. > :01:36.At the plant for 44 years, you become attached to the people,

:01:37. > :01:42.But it's a bigger blow to the community when it comes.

:01:43. > :01:44.It goes without saying that Tata is the biggest employer

:01:45. > :01:48.Everyone, it seems, knows someone employed at the steelworks,

:01:49. > :01:51.and people here tell me that the plant does much more

:01:52. > :02:00.Tata Steel says any announcement will be made to its workforce first.

:02:01. > :02:04.But local politicians are already braced for bad news.

:02:05. > :02:05.The steel industry has to restructure.

:02:06. > :02:08.It has to look at cutting some of its costs.

:02:09. > :02:12.I am absolutely convinced that with the trade unions

:02:13. > :02:16.and the Government and Tata Steel working constructively

:02:17. > :02:20.in partnership with each other, we can weather this storm.

:02:21. > :02:23.We can ride it out and we can actually come back stronger.

:02:24. > :02:24.With other sites in Newport, Llanwern.

:02:25. > :02:30.Tata employees a total of 6000 people across Wales.

:02:31. > :02:33.But the vast majority - around 4000 workers -

:02:34. > :02:39.The Economy Minister met with company bosses on a prearranged

:02:40. > :02:42.visit to Deeside this morning, but wouldn't be drawn

:02:43. > :02:47.If anything official comes from the company...

:02:48. > :02:51.There are so many rumours about the steel industry

:02:52. > :02:53.and to comment on anything, it wouldn't be right.

:02:54. > :02:55.It would be unfair, because if there are any issues

:02:56. > :02:58.around jobs, I'm sure the company will be wanting to deal

:02:59. > :03:01.Unions say they are broadly satisfied with the Welsh

:03:02. > :03:04.Government's attempts to protect steelworkers,

:03:05. > :03:06.but they are frustrated with the lack of action

:03:12. > :03:14.industry by cutting energy costs and taking action on

:03:15. > :03:20.But it seems that simply hasn't been enough to protect Welsh

:03:21. > :03:27.steelworkers, whose future this evening is more uncertain than ever.

:03:28. > :03:29.And we'll bring you any updates on this story over the weekend,

:03:30. > :03:32.including a special report on Sunday Politics Wales.

:03:33. > :03:38.That's this Sunday morning at 11am, here on BBC One Wales.

:03:39. > :03:41.A 53-year-old man has appeared before magistrates in Newport,

:03:42. > :03:44.charged with the murder of a woman in Monmouthshire.

:03:45. > :03:46.The body of 25-year-old Georgina Symonds was found

:03:47. > :03:51.Peter Morgan, who's from Abergavenny, was remanded

:03:52. > :03:56.in custody until his next court appearance on Monday.

:03:57. > :03:59.North Wales Police are treating the death of a man in Rhyl

:04:00. > :04:01.as suspicious after significant concerns were raised

:04:02. > :04:06.The body of 44-year-old Liam James Hill was found

:04:07. > :04:09.in his flat on the West Parade last Friday.

:04:10. > :04:12.Officers are now appealing for information to help establish

:04:13. > :04:16.Mr Hill's movements before his death.

:04:17. > :04:19.The Education Minister Huw Lewis has announced he'll be standing down

:04:20. > :04:24.Mr Lewis has been AM for Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney

:04:25. > :04:27.since the first Assembly elections in 1999.

:04:28. > :04:31.Our political reporter, Bethan Lewis, joins me now.

:04:32. > :04:37.Bethan, what's behind his decision to stand down?

:04:38. > :04:45.He said in a statement tonight that it is time to move on for him and

:04:46. > :04:49.his constituency after 17 years in Cardiff Bay. He says he's looking

:04:50. > :04:52.forward to seeking out new opportunities, challenges and

:04:53. > :04:57.spending more time with his family. He is a former teacher. He has been

:04:58. > :05:02.education minister for over two years. A high profile and

:05:03. > :05:05.contentious portfolio. Before that, he was culture minister and

:05:06. > :05:08.communities and communities and tackling poverty minister as well.

:05:09. > :05:18.But the night, the First Minister, who he stood against in the Labour

:05:19. > :05:21.leadership contest in 2009, says he praises him for his passion and says

:05:22. > :05:28.he will be sorely missed. And he is in fact going to join several other

:05:29. > :05:35.Labour AMs who are standing down. Yes, he is the second Cabinet

:05:36. > :05:39.banister to stand down. Huw Lewis is the latest of ten Labour AMs to say

:05:40. > :05:46.they will be standing in made's elections. That is a third of the

:05:47. > :05:50.whole Labour group. Some AMs from other parties as well. Whatever the

:05:51. > :05:54.result in May, the Assembly will look pretty different. A new

:05:55. > :05:58.candidate will have to be chosen and it is a pretty safe Labour seat, so

:05:59. > :06:01.there is likely to be a lot of competition for that. Thank you.

:06:02. > :06:04.Doubts have been raised about some of the engineering behind Swansea's

:06:05. > :06:07.Several experts have told BBC Wales the design could generate less

:06:08. > :06:09.energy than the company behind it claims.

:06:10. > :06:12.It comes after the Prime Minister admitted his enthusiasm

:06:13. > :06:15.for the project has reduced, as the UK Government tries

:06:16. > :06:23.I did question back in 2010 whether it would be better

:06:24. > :06:25.to reorientate those turbines so that the wake was parallel

:06:26. > :06:29.to the mouth coming out OF here, and sending the wake right out

:06:30. > :06:35.So I hope that if this scheme goes ahead, and I hope it does,

:06:36. > :06:40.that we can try to reconsider some aspects of the design,

:06:41. > :06:44.which I think at the moment, could be improved.

:06:45. > :06:48.The developer, Tidal Lagoon Power, says questions on the engineering

:06:49. > :06:56.and environmental impact of the project have been addressed.

:06:57. > :06:58.Rugby, and the Ospreys' chances of reaching the knockout stages

:06:59. > :07:00.of the European Champions Cup were boosted after they beat

:07:01. > :07:04.Clermont Auvergne 21-13 at the Liberty Stadium tonight.

:07:05. > :07:08.The goal kicking of Dan Biggar and Sam Davies secured the points

:07:09. > :07:12.for the Ospreys, who can win a place in the next round if the defeat

:07:13. > :07:20.Elsewhere, the Dragons beat Castres 31-18 in the Challenge Cup.

:07:21. > :07:24.Winger Ashton Hewitt's try just before full time secured the Welsh

:07:25. > :07:31.The Dragons stay two points clear at the top of pool two.

:07:32. > :07:34.In football, Cardiff City won't be able to sign new players this month.

:07:35. > :07:37.They've been placed under a transfer embargo by the Football League

:07:38. > :07:40.after breaching financial fair play rules.

:07:41. > :07:42.It's thought the breach relates to Cardiff's debts.

:07:43. > :07:47.It's the second time in six years that Cardiff have had

:07:48. > :07:54.Let's see what the weather has in store for the weekend.

:07:55. > :08:07.Hello. Keep the winter woollies handy. It will stay cold this

:08:08. > :08:11.weekend. I can promise some dry weather. Some sunshine and a lighter

:08:12. > :08:17.winds. It might not be dry everywhere through the weekend. This

:08:18. > :08:21.evening, some wintry showers. Some showers in Pembrokeshire tonight.

:08:22. > :08:28.Elsewhere, dried, clear starry skies and a widespread frost. Temperatures

:08:29. > :08:33.could fall as low as minus eight Celsius. Once again, ice would be a

:08:34. > :08:38.hazard and a Met Office warning is in force. A cold, frosty start for

:08:39. > :08:43.much of Wales tomorrow. But bright and crisp with plenty of sunshine.

:08:44. > :08:48.But some showers in the south-west. Across the rest of the UK, watch out

:08:49. > :08:51.for icy patches when travelling. Wintry showers will affect the

:08:52. > :08:57.eastern coast was otherwise, most places bright with some winter

:08:58. > :09:02.sunshine. Cloud will bring rain and snow to the north-west later in the

:09:03. > :09:07.afternoon. Only one Celsius tomorrow in Glasgow. Tomorrow afternoon, many

:09:08. > :09:12.places dry, bright and crisp with sunshine. The odd shower lingering

:09:13. > :09:19.in the West. Temperatures only cold to say, especially on higher ground.

:09:20. > :09:25.Seven Celsius. Tomorrow evening, some frost. Cloud increasing

:09:26. > :09:30.overnight. That may bring rain or snow to North Wales. Further south

:09:31. > :09:36.will remain dry and frosty. On Sunday, some patchy rain and snow in

:09:37. > :09:41.mid, north and East Wales. A freshening wind in the West. Into

:09:42. > :09:46.next week, signs of a change. Some rain on the way and a little snow in

:09:47. > :09:49.places. It may turn milder by the middle of the week. But a lot of

:09:50. > :09:51.uncertainty. Have a nice weekend. There's news, sport,

:09:52. > :09:54.travel and weather throughout the weekend on BBC Radio Wales,

:09:55. > :09:56.Radio Cymru and online. We're back at 5:50pm tomorrow

:09:57. > :09:58.evening. For now, from all of us

:09:59. > :10:03.on the late team, goodnight.
