:00:47. > :00:49.Cheap imports from China, a strong pound

:00:50. > :00:52.and high energy costs have led to thousands of job losses elsewhere

:00:53. > :01:00.Now BBC Wales understands that hundreds of jobs could go as early

:01:01. > :01:03.as tomorrow all over Wales, but mainly at Port Talbot.

:01:04. > :01:06.Port Talbot is massively important to the British economy.

:01:07. > :01:09.Probably in 2014, it accounted for a third of the steel produced

:01:10. > :01:20.So we've seen a number of job losses since then,

:01:21. > :01:27.if we want a manufacturing base and we want steel,

:01:28. > :01:29.Port Talbot is the jewel in the crown, not just in Wales,

:01:30. > :01:34.Now there are concerns that further job losses could be the end

:01:35. > :01:38.We're watching the industry that we love and we have been

:01:39. > :01:41.so much of a part of in terms of Welsh industrial history,

:01:42. > :01:43.we're watching that decline to the point where it's so serious,

:01:44. > :01:46.it could be going over a cliff, and that's the end of it.

:01:47. > :01:50.The Italian government has already intervened here at Europe's largest

:01:51. > :01:59.making huge losses, so ministers intervened to essentially

:02:15. > :02:18.When I see all options considered, I mean that the Government should

:02:19. > :02:21.really take seriously the option of taking in a temporary part stake

:02:22. > :02:26.in the industry, like has been done elsewhere in Italy and in Germany,

:02:27. > :02:29.in order to protect those vitally important jobs to the Welsh economy.

:02:30. > :02:32.Wales' First Minister said the UK Government should be

:02:33. > :02:38.If you look at the way Italy has done it, Italy has effectively taken

:02:39. > :02:41.the steel industry into public ownership and is selling it again,

:02:42. > :02:43.so the state aid issue doesn't really apply.

:02:44. > :02:46.I hope we don't get to that position in the UK but if we do,

:02:47. > :02:49.the UK Government must be ready to make sure it supports the steel

:02:50. > :02:53.industry in Wales and gets it through this difficult patch.

:02:54. > :02:57.It's been a central part of the Welsh economy for decades

:02:58. > :02:59.but the steel industry is now facing some

:03:00. > :03:06.New eye-care services are to be introduced in Mid and West Wales,

:03:07. > :03:09.to reduce journey times for hundreds of patients.

:03:10. > :03:12.Patients in the Hywel Dda University Health Board,

:03:13. > :03:17.with wet age-related macular degeneration,

:03:18. > :03:19.currently have to travel to Ammanford or Aberystwyth.

:03:20. > :03:22.But new centres in Pembrokeshire and south Ceredigion are planned,

:03:23. > :03:25.to bring services closer to patients.

:03:26. > :03:29.For the first time, people in Wales are being given the chance

:03:30. > :03:32.to explore the Welsh National Book of Remembrance for the First World

:03:33. > :03:36.The book holds the names of 35,000 servicemen and women

:03:37. > :03:41.It's now being displayed at the National Library

:03:42. > :03:45.A digital copy has been created, so the public can help

:03:46. > :03:47.in researching the stories of the names listed.

:03:48. > :03:51.We want to discover the hidden histories that lie hidden

:03:52. > :03:55.within the covers of the book itself and

:03:56. > :04:01.therefore we have created a digital copy and we are eager to learn more

:04:02. > :04:05.about the names and the personal and community histories that lie
