:00:00. > :00:00.That's all from the BBC News at Six - so it's goodbye from me -

:00:00. > :00:10.The Tories promise to cut Welsh government ministers' pay

:00:11. > :00:15.If anyone would like to serve in a Welsh

:00:16. > :00:17.Conservative Cabinet, they would have to take

:00:18. > :00:27.It's usually one of the busiest roads in Wales.

:00:28. > :00:30.Work to reduce the risk of flooding will begin in the next few months.

:00:31. > :00:32.Growing calls from within Ukip for the party's leader

:00:33. > :00:37.How much sugar is there in your food and drinks?

:00:38. > :00:40.One Welsh MP wants it shown in spoonfuls on labels.

:00:41. > :00:43.Well, it should have been done a long time ago,

:00:44. > :00:45.Especially when my children were younger.

:00:46. > :00:51.I don't really think many people look.

:00:52. > :00:54.They just take it off the shelf, don't they?

:00:55. > :00:58.Wales' women prepare to start their Six Nations campaign.

:00:59. > :01:00.We'll catch-up with the army captain who's served in Afghanistan aiming

:01:01. > :01:14.for success against Ireland on Saturday.

:01:15. > :01:19.Welsh ministers could get their pay cut by 10% if the Conservatives win

:01:20. > :01:25.Their leader, Andrew RT Davies, will say in a speech tonight that

:01:26. > :01:29.giving his cabinet members ?90,000 each a year rather than ?100,000

:01:30. > :01:34.would save a quarter of a million over five years -

:01:35. > :01:37.money he says he'd put towards getting young people

:01:38. > :01:45.Our political correspondent Arwyn Jones has the details.

:01:46. > :01:52.This man wants to be the next First Minister of Wales but if he gets the

:01:53. > :01:56.top job after the election in May he wants a pay cut because if the

:01:57. > :02:01.Conservatives form a government he and his Cabinet will take a 10% pay

:02:02. > :02:04.cut to their ministerial salary, saving around a quarter of ?1

:02:05. > :02:08.million. We are actually saying where we would invest that money

:02:09. > :02:10.because ultimately we believe that young people obviously for the

:02:11. > :02:15.future of this great country and we believe that this institution is the

:02:16. > :02:19.democratic will of lost democracy and we do want greater youth Welsh

:02:20. > :02:22.participation here so instead of just talking about it we will be

:02:23. > :02:29.making sure we put our money where our mouths are and invest that money

:02:30. > :02:34.to develop youth participation. After the Assembly election day

:02:35. > :02:36.First Minister salary is expected to increase to ?140,000 with ministers

:02:37. > :02:47.of the worst government paying 100,000. That compares with 56,004

:02:48. > :02:53.headteachers, ?91,000 for top GPs, 147,004 council chiefs and 134,004

:02:54. > :02:56.MPs in David Cameron's Summit. This recruitment specialist says it is

:02:57. > :03:01.not money that would attract executives politics. I would say for

:03:02. > :03:07.people going into politics, there needs to be airway and it is usually

:03:08. > :03:12.deep within them for another challenge for them, not all about

:03:13. > :03:15.money, certainly wouldn't going in politics for that, it is about

:03:16. > :03:19.making a difference. Last year an independent panel recommended that

:03:20. > :03:22.they should be given a pay rise but with the current squeeze on public

:03:23. > :03:27.spending many members said they couldn't take the squeeze and would

:03:28. > :03:30.give the money to charity. But if we want the best and brightest

:03:31. > :03:34.representing us in Cardiff Bay, isn't it right we paid top dollar?

:03:35. > :03:40.On a High Street here it was a mixed response. If other people are either

:03:41. > :03:46.having a pay cut or the wages are staying the same for just 1% for

:03:47. > :03:50.something why should they not be in the same situation? It is a very

:03:51. > :03:55.responsible job, you should have good pay. It is penny-pinching

:03:56. > :04:01.otherwise to cut it. So is it a bit of a gimmick? Absolutely. It is a

:04:02. > :04:06.gimmick. Considering I had ?1 80 last week, brilliant. Last year on

:04:07. > :04:10.the pension. They need to, and live with the common people for a month

:04:11. > :04:13.and see how we live and then they might have a different idea. So some

:04:14. > :04:19.support here for cut-price politics, after all, everyone loves a bargain.

:04:20. > :04:21.Arwyn is at the Senedd tonight where the Conservative leader

:04:22. > :04:26.Arwyn, an election is on the horizon - this is just an easy

:04:27. > :04:33.I think every political party knows that when the Welsh Assembly

:04:34. > :04:37.election begins in a few weeks' time, voters will dodge them on

:04:38. > :04:41.plans for hospitals, schools, support they can give businesses.

:04:42. > :04:47.Mike but I think the Conservatives know full well there are an awful

:04:48. > :04:50.lot of voters have either seen pay freezes or pay cuts. Also there is

:04:51. > :04:54.the residual feeling that politicians tend to be in it for

:04:55. > :05:01.themselves will stop so, any sort of plan a can outline which seeks to

:05:02. > :05:04.address that will certainly be good for them. Andrew RT Davies will also

:05:05. > :05:07.be outlining a package that will include fewer holidays for Assembly

:05:08. > :05:11.members, they should be in this place more often and that perhaps

:05:12. > :05:16.trying to address that feeling that all voters are not all that keen on

:05:17. > :05:21.politicians. What has been the reaction from other parties? But a

:05:22. > :05:24.lot from the other parties. Perhaps that is understandable because we

:05:25. > :05:29.would want to be seen to be opposing it cut to the cost of politics? But

:05:30. > :05:34.as I was saying in the report, last year when we got that independent

:05:35. > :05:40.panel which recommended the salary for Assembly members should go up

:05:41. > :05:42.from ?54,000 to ?64,000, a lot of Assembly members crossed the

:05:43. > :05:46.political divide and said they couldn't accept that increase and

:05:47. > :05:49.would give to charity. There is a consensus that this idea of cutting

:05:50. > :05:53.the cost of politics. The Conservatives certainly have taken

:05:54. > :05:57.the lead on that today but not a lot of reaction today because we get

:05:58. > :06:00.closer to that election campaign you can rest assured that an awful lot

:06:01. > :06:05.of politicians will have an awful lot to say an awful lot of issues.

:06:06. > :06:06.I'm sure they will. Thank you very much.

:06:07. > :06:10.Work to reduce the risk of flooding on one of the busiest roads in Wales

:06:11. > :06:14.The Welsh government has announced an extra half a million pounds

:06:15. > :06:17.to improve drainage on and around the A55 near Bangor -

:06:18. > :06:18.which was badly affected over Christmas.

:06:19. > :06:23.A major highway, or a dual carriageway canal.

:06:24. > :06:30.This was the A55 on Boxing Day as flood water closed the road

:06:31. > :06:32.and left places like Bangor partially cut off from the rest of

:06:33. > :06:36.It wasn't the first time in the last few years it had happened.

:06:37. > :06:41.Water also flowed into the village of Talybont, alongside the A55,

:06:42. > :06:45.Today the First Minister came to North Wales to announce that work

:06:46. > :06:51.will begin soon to deal with both problems.

:06:52. > :06:57.The A55 is the major gateway to Wales across the northern coast and

:06:58. > :07:01.it needs to be as resilient as possible. So, what we are doing is

:07:02. > :07:07.making sure that the money is available to move forward, it

:07:08. > :07:10.schemes in Talybont and also bringing the work between junctions

:07:11. > :07:13.12 and 13. Both areas were affected by flooding over Christmas.

:07:14. > :07:15.The response to that flooding and other emergencies on the A55

:07:16. > :07:17.is co-ordinated from this control room near Conwy.

:07:18. > :07:20.Staff here also get a good view of the many cones

:07:21. > :07:27.which are currently on the carriageway.

:07:28. > :07:30.Some drivers fear this means more are to come.

:07:31. > :07:32.Back in Talybont, one resident has welcomed the scheme

:07:33. > :07:43.The people of Talybont will be very pleased with this. It has been a

:07:44. > :07:47.long time coming but only people in Talybont Worle rest peacefully

:07:48. > :07:52.knowing that the A55 warm up not fund again and that homes are safe.

:07:53. > :07:56.People in Talybont also welcomed the scheme to protect their homes but

:07:57. > :07:59.some wish it could have been done sooner before the house was flooded

:08:00. > :08:01.by the second time in just a few years.

:08:02. > :08:05.A jury at the Old Bailey has retired to consider its verdict in the case

:08:06. > :08:07.of three men accused of helping a teenager from Cardiff to join

:08:08. > :08:09.militants from the Islamic State group in Syria.

:08:10. > :08:12.The men, including Kristen Brek from the Grangetown area

:08:13. > :08:14.of the city, are charged with assisting in the preparation

:08:15. > :08:20.Tata Steel has reported a net loss of ?215 million in the last quarter

:08:21. > :08:26.of 2015 across its business in Europe and India.

:08:27. > :08:29.Last month the company announced hundreds of job losses at its works

:08:30. > :08:33.The Indian company said that despite rising demand for steel,

:08:34. > :08:37.it has been hit by a flood of cheap imports.

:08:38. > :08:41.An inquest in Cardiff has heard how a father-of-three choked to death

:08:42. > :08:54.while trying to eat a McDonald's cheeseburger in one go.

:08:55. > :08:58.burger following a night out drinking with friends.

:08:59. > :09:06.A verdict of death by misadventure has been recorded.

:09:07. > :09:08.The headmaster of a Newport secondary school has criticised

:09:09. > :09:11.the way the Council has handled the planning of a new Welsh language

:09:12. > :09:15.Parents are meeting tonight to discuss the rejection of plans

:09:16. > :09:18.to build a new Welsh school on the site of Duffryn High School.

:09:19. > :09:20.The headmaster, Jon Wilson, says the whole situation

:09:21. > :09:22.is a "mess." Newport Council says it's committed to investing

:09:23. > :09:27.A new report on cancer in Wales has shown that an estimated 40% of cases

:09:28. > :09:29.could have been prevented by tackling smoking,

:09:30. > :09:33.The figures show a 14% rise in new cancer cases in the ten years

:09:34. > :09:35.to 2014, mainly due to people living longer.

:09:36. > :09:38.It also found a clear link between lung cancer and inequality

:09:39. > :09:42.in Wales, with survival rates among the lowest in Europe.

:09:43. > :09:45.Getting older is the main risk factor for most cancers,

:09:46. > :09:51.but also we've noticed that there are increases beginning

:09:52. > :09:54.in middle age and younger pensioners and many of these are partly

:09:55. > :10:00.preventable cancers, so that's important.

:10:01. > :10:02.Four general election candidates for Ukip Wales are calling

:10:03. > :10:06.for the party's leader here, Nathan Gill, to resign.

:10:07. > :10:10.Joe Smith - the party's best performer in Wales at last year's

:10:11. > :10:14.election - says he's been "weak" during the party's controversial

:10:15. > :10:16.selection process ahead of the upcoming Assembly election.

:10:17. > :10:19.Many in the party are also unhappy that the former Conservative MPs

:10:20. > :10:27.Neil Hamilton and Mark Reckless are seeking seats.

:10:28. > :10:30.I want Nathan Gill to resign as leader in Wales because of

:10:31. > :10:32.the mess that we are in at the moment.

:10:33. > :10:34.He has shown no leadership whatsoever.

:10:35. > :10:37.He should have not allowed the situation to get as it is now.

:10:38. > :10:39.He never listened to the members, activists and candidates in Wales,

:10:40. > :10:43.Our political reporter Paul Martin is here.

:10:44. > :10:56.It all centres on just how sought after the most winnable seats for

:10:57. > :11:00.UKIP at the Assembly election are. There was fury amongst Welsh actress

:11:01. > :11:03.last summer when it was decided that an Executive committee in London

:11:04. > :11:07.would have the final say on selections. Nathan Gill announced

:11:08. > :11:11.earlier this week that after old local members here will now get a

:11:12. > :11:15.vote on ranking those selections but it hasn't satisfied everyone. There

:11:16. > :11:19.are four now on the record all going for him to go over how he has

:11:20. > :11:24.handled this and others are saying so privately. There is still support

:11:25. > :11:27.for Mr Gill in the party. I spoke to one long-standing member is

:11:28. > :11:35.happening and he said this. Nathan has not been week. Absolutely not.

:11:36. > :11:39.Nathan will be leading this party, I can after you, into the Assembly

:11:40. > :11:44.elections and he will be a very effective leader. So where does all

:11:45. > :11:48.this leave the party? There are two immediate problems. Firstly getting

:11:49. > :11:52.the members united behind Nathan Gill. Clearly at this age of the

:11:53. > :11:56.electoral cycle this kind of position is not helpful. From an

:11:57. > :12:00.organisational perspective is not as a thing. Secondly, getting these

:12:01. > :12:04.selections finally sorted so the party can appoint sportspeople in

:12:05. > :12:08.areas like health, education and inequality and get focused on

:12:09. > :12:11.finalising the men's first to and focusing on the campaign. There is a

:12:12. > :12:15.meeting of the Welsh committee this Saturday. I think it is going to be

:12:16. > :12:17.very lively. We will hear more of that I am sure. Paul, thank you very

:12:18. > :12:24.much. 150 jobs are under threat near Risca

:12:25. > :12:27.after an American-based company confirmed its factory

:12:28. > :12:29.there will close next year. Penny Giles in Cwmfelinfach makes

:12:30. > :12:31.sensors and control equipment. Business as usual, at this

:12:32. > :12:46.industrial estate here, workers, tightlipped,

:12:47. > :12:47.but disappointed. Penny Giles was taken over

:12:48. > :12:50.by the American group The company makes everything

:12:51. > :13:02.from joysticks and censors to parts for control desks, it's equipment

:13:03. > :13:05.used in a variety of industries Most of the sites are in America

:13:06. > :13:09.but 1 is here in Wales. The workforce here have been told

:13:10. > :13:11.to divert any questions about the future of this factory

:13:12. > :13:16.to the company's headquarters From there a spokesman

:13:17. > :13:24.told BBC Wales that this site will close

:13:25. > :13:26.at some point next year. We asked about the possibility

:13:27. > :13:28.of people transferring to other parts of the business,

:13:29. > :13:31.a spokesman said he couldn't provide The company blames economic

:13:32. > :13:37.conditions for this disappointing news, 9000 employees globally,

:13:38. > :13:40.it seems few of that total will come Use it or lose it -

:13:41. > :13:49.the message from Tenby Museum And Wales' women prepare

:13:50. > :13:55.for their Six Nations opener against the reigning

:13:56. > :14:03.champions Ireland. How much sugar is there

:14:04. > :14:06.in a can of pop? A Welsh MP thinks we should be told

:14:07. > :14:11.- and he's trying to change the law to force food and drinks companies

:14:12. > :14:14.to reveal how many spoonfuls Here's our parliamentary

:14:15. > :14:30.correspondent David Cornock. Obesity, it's a growing problem. One

:14:31. > :14:34.in four Welsh children now overweight or obese risking their

:14:35. > :14:39.health and an expensive bill for the NHS. One Welsh MP dings this may be

:14:40. > :14:44.because they and their parents don't realise how much they eat. They

:14:45. > :14:49.don't know there is nine spoonfuls in a can of fizzy drink and seven in

:14:50. > :14:53.this yoghurt, which is more than a man and a woman are supposed to it.

:14:54. > :14:56.People have the right to know what they are eating and they are

:14:57. > :15:01.becoming ill and the graphics and deceit is going down. The cost of

:15:02. > :15:05.obesity and diabetes is costing the nation billions. So is he right?

:15:06. > :15:08.Would better labelling make a difference, we as some of the

:15:09. > :15:12.constituents. Definitely should have been done a long time ago. I aways

:15:13. > :15:17.check even if I buy some but something for the grandchildren. It

:15:18. > :15:22.would make me think twice if it was a lot and if it said, it is beans

:15:23. > :15:27.but if it was just a few, then it probably would get it. The proposed

:15:28. > :15:30.law would force manufacturers to state how many teaspoons of sugar

:15:31. > :15:33.the put in food ordering. The industry is not keen. I think it is

:15:34. > :15:40.a really bad idea. For a number of reasons. Firstly obesity is caused

:15:41. > :15:45.by excess calories, those could come from alcohol, saturated fat, five,

:15:46. > :15:50.protein. Or they could come from sugar. So why would you single out

:15:51. > :15:58.one particular nutrient? Better labelling is one idea. Plaid Cymru

:15:59. > :16:03.say they've would also put a tax on sugary drinks and spend the cash

:16:04. > :16:09.raised on the NHS. If more people are aware of the health impacts on

:16:10. > :16:14.what was perceived to be healthy, if they believe it is going towards

:16:15. > :16:18.something like more doctors and not into the general public purse. That

:16:19. > :16:23.is also winning growing support at Westminster. The bill stands no

:16:24. > :16:26.chance of becoming law due to lack of parliamentary time, but he does

:16:27. > :16:30.hope it may yet become government policy.

:16:31. > :16:32.Councillors in Carmarthenshire have rejected a proposal to build

:16:33. > :16:34.a new waste processing and energy generation plant at Cwmgwili

:16:35. > :16:38.Clean Power Properties wanted to turn people's rubbish

:16:39. > :16:43.But planners recommended the proposal be refused,

:16:44. > :16:45.saying emissions from the plant could impact the health of people

:16:46. > :16:53.Merthyr Tydfil Council has apologised to a driver

:16:54. > :16:55.who was issued a parking ticket after breaking down

:16:56. > :17:00.The authority says its traffic warden should have offered

:17:01. > :17:03.the motorist help rather than issuing the fine.

:17:04. > :17:06.The latest audience figures show both of BBC Wales' radio stations

:17:07. > :17:09.have recorded increases in listeners.

:17:10. > :17:15.409,000 weekly listeners tuned in to Radio Wales during the last

:17:16. > :17:18.three months of 2015 - an increase of 25,000 compared

:17:19. > :17:24.Radio Cymru had 108,000 listeners - an increase of 4000 listeners

:17:25. > :17:32.Tomos is here now with all the sport.

:17:33. > :17:35.Wales' women's rugby team are preparing for their opening game

:17:36. > :17:38.of the Six Nations against reigning champions Ireland on Saturday.

:17:39. > :17:41.Centre Gemma Rowland says the team's in a better position than last year

:17:42. > :17:45.The 26-year-old army captain made it into the side having served

:17:46. > :18:02.Gemma Rowland has set her heart and helping her side succeed this year

:18:03. > :18:06.and when the British Army officer takes aim she rarely misses the

:18:07. > :18:10.target. On her debut last year, Wales beat champions England for

:18:11. > :18:16.only the second time in the history. She picked up the title of Army

:18:17. > :18:23.sportswoman of the year. It's a far cry from when she spent the 2013 six

:18:24. > :18:26.Nations. Back then she was a trip commander in Afghanistan, in charge

:18:27. > :18:31.of 30 men, working in the surveillance, watching over patrols

:18:32. > :18:36.and lookout for potential danger. Despite 18 hour days she told me she

:18:37. > :18:42.still managed to find the time to train. Eager to continue playing

:18:43. > :18:45.rugby on her return home. It's an experience I wouldn't trade for

:18:46. > :18:49.anything because I learn a lot from myself and I'd grew as a person.

:18:50. > :18:56.Being able to handle pressure, worked as a team leader, lead a

:18:57. > :19:01.team, it all transfers to a rugby pitch. Probably hand in hand but

:19:02. > :19:06.helpfully. Her team faces Ireland on Saturday. Both sides met last week

:19:07. > :19:11.in a warm up match. Wales finished on top, 15-5. While the current

:19:12. > :19:14.squad is preparing for the immediate task of facing Ireland, work to find

:19:15. > :19:18.the next generation of players is already underway. Summer leagues and

:19:19. > :19:26.more girls only teams have helped the growth of the game. A couple of

:19:27. > :19:31.seasons ago just 179 to 15-year-olds were playing at special hobs set up

:19:32. > :19:36.across the country. But that figure was up to more than 1300. Those

:19:37. > :19:39.running the game here say a successful senior side will also

:19:40. > :19:43.help raise the profile of this board. Performances have helped. We

:19:44. > :19:46.had a good crowd last week against Ireland. Over 1000 I believe were

:19:47. > :19:53.there to watch a good standard of rugby. It will draw in the crowds

:19:54. > :19:57.moving forward. This year's six Nations is more important than

:20:21. > :20:24.I know he can cover on the wing and does play there,

:21:24. > :21:26.Tenby on the Pembrokeshire coast attracts plenty of visitors every

:21:30. > :21:32.come and visit us or we will be forced to close.

:21:33. > :21:38.Wales' oldest independent museum opened in the town in 1878,

:21:39. > :21:41.but following cuts to its funding it could be forced to shut its doors

:21:42. > :21:57.Perched high above the sea, Tenby's Museum reigns over the history and

:22:07. > :22:10.unparalleled in the county. Those famous Welsh names helped draw in

:22:11. > :22:16.17,000 visitors a year. But it is also a line on local authority

:22:17. > :22:20.funding. That is drying up. It costs about 100,000 a year. We are going

:22:21. > :22:26.to suffer a cut in funding of 10,000 from next year which is a big lump,

:22:27. > :22:30.about 10%, of our overall income year-on-year. Councils don't have to

:22:51. > :22:55.decline. To survive, there needs to be real reform. These challenges are

:22:56. > :22:58.not going to throw people off their game. Museums will find new

:22:59. > :23:02.collaborations, partnerships and a new way of working to still deliver

:23:03. > :23:08.services in a really positive way. To the benefit of communities. Tenby

:23:09. > :23:13.has cut staffing costs but is now making a direct appeal to the

:23:56. > :24:00.rain will continue on and off. Cloudy, Misty and murky. Spells of

:24:01. > :24:06.drizzle especially in the hills. Dry by Don but strengthening winds. It

:24:07. > :24:11.or 10 Celsius. Tomorrow starts tribe but this cold front pushing

:24:12. > :24:14.south-east across Wales later on and through the night. Tomorrow will be

:24:15. > :24:19.mostly cloudy. Some really bright spells and patchy drizzle. That

:24:20. > :24:24.heavier rain will arrive from the north-west through the afternoon

:24:25. > :24:30.slowly spreading south-east. Strong winds in the West, Gail possible

:24:31. > :24:34.along the coast. Top temperatures of nine on Anglesey and 11th in

:24:35. > :24:36.Newport. That cold fund will continue to bring a spell of heavy

:25:13. > :25:17.for heavier rain later on Saturday. The risk of gales. These are the

:25:18. > :25:22.mean wind speeds. 29 or 30 mph but we could see ghosts of 50, 60 or

:25:23. > :25:28.even 70 along the exposed coasts. Low pressure systems with this

:25:29. > :25:32.unsettled Atlantic influence will make it changeable on Sunday.

:25:33. > :25:36.Remaining windy. There could be a mix of sunny spells and blustery

:25:37. > :25:40.showers on Sunday morning which could be wintry on high ground. More

:26:50. > :26:53.have spent nearly ?7 billion to help refugees displaced by the Syrian

:26:54. > :26:57.conflict. David Cameron announced the funding at an international

:26:58. > :26:59.conference but it was overshadowed by the extension of peace talks and

:27:00. > :27:00.intense fighting on the ground. And Welsh ministers could get

:27:01. > :27:03.their pay cut by 10% if the Conservatives win
