:00:22. > :00:25.all to adopt a healthy lifestyle, as a survey shows it's the illness

:00:32. > :00:53.Three quarters of people in Wales are worried about getting dementia.

:00:54. > :00:57.But a new survey says almost half of us are not sure if you

:00:58. > :01:01.Today the Welsh Government launched a campaign calling on us all to take

:01:02. > :01:04.steps to try and reduce the risk for ourselves.

:01:05. > :01:10.A fit body, hopefully a fit mind later on in life.

:01:11. > :01:13.Here at Penydarren Park in Merthyr Tydfil, Chris shows me

:01:14. > :01:21.After 30 years of doing no exercise, he has just taken up the sport

:01:22. > :01:24.because he believes it will help ward off dementia, something that's

:01:25. > :01:31.I had a friend, or a cousin, who has been stricken by dementia

:01:32. > :01:38.He has got two young dependent children and I realised that

:01:39. > :01:42.hopefully, by taking up a healthy lifestyle, healthy body,

:01:43. > :01:45.healthy mind and hopefully going into old age with

:01:46. > :01:51.According to the Welsh Government, getting dementia is now

:01:52. > :01:58.And a survey of 1,000 people showed almost half of us don't know you can

:01:59. > :02:05.Three quarters of us, they say, don't know where to begin with that.

:02:06. > :02:11.In Caerphilly, these men took part in a 35 year health study

:02:12. > :02:15.and the medical experts say what they found here has

:02:16. > :02:20.To some extent, we have it, there is a genetic element,

:02:21. > :02:23.but to a large extent, it is how we live.

:02:24. > :02:26.And so if we can adopt a healthy lifestyle,

:02:27. > :02:28.just in the same way that it may benefit our heart,

:02:29. > :02:32.what affects the heart affects the head, so it will also

:02:33. > :02:36.But Mary Christine, who has been living with dementia for several

:02:37. > :02:42.She and husband Graham told me that by claiming lifestyle is a factor,

:02:43. > :02:46.the government is turning attention away from the need for more

:02:47. > :02:51.You have got to live your life, you've got to enjoy it,

:02:52. > :02:55.you've got to have fun, you've got to do whatever you can.

:02:56. > :02:59.We joke about Alzheimer's in this house.

:03:00. > :03:11.The Alzheimer's Society says currently, only four in ten people

:03:12. > :03:16.with the condition in Wales get a diagnosis, the lowest in the UK.

:03:17. > :03:19.Last year, the Welsh Government put an extra ?5.5 million

:03:20. > :03:23.into support services and set up diagnosis targets.

:03:24. > :03:27.It is one thing to diagnose but you have got to be able to show

:03:28. > :03:30.people that once you have had a diagnosis that it leads

:03:31. > :03:34.So our teams of people going into care homes push up

:03:35. > :03:38.the rates of diagnosis but also make sure that people who work in those

:03:39. > :03:43.care homes have practical things they can do to help people

:03:44. > :03:46.live longer and live better with dementia.

:03:47. > :03:50.The government message is simple, stay fit and thin, don't smoke

:03:51. > :03:54.or drink, watch your health and try new things.

:03:55. > :03:56.Chris takes the view it is worth a punt.

:03:57. > :04:00.And anyway, he says he is having fun.

:04:01. > :04:03.Councillors in Pembrokeshire have decided to begin a fourth

:04:04. > :04:07.consultation into the controversial reorganisation of secondary

:04:08. > :04:12.It follows a long dispute over the future of education in the town

:04:13. > :04:16.which would see Tasker Milward and Sir Thomas Picton schools shut.

:04:17. > :04:19.The council plan to build a new school on a different site

:04:20. > :04:26.with sixth form education provided by Pembrokeshire college.

:04:27. > :04:29.A competitor has emerged to challenge the company behind

:04:30. > :04:32.the ?1 billion tidal project for Swansea Bay.

:04:33. > :04:36.Tidal Lagoon Power wants to be the first to generate electricity

:04:37. > :04:39.from a tidal lagoon starting in Swansea.

:04:40. > :04:43.Now Ecotricity, which already generates electricity with wind

:04:44. > :04:49.turbines and solar parks, says it can do it for a lot less money.

:04:50. > :04:52.Swansea Council says it has to re-organise its music service

:04:53. > :04:58.Earlier this evening around 200 protestors gathered outside

:04:59. > :05:02.the city's Guild Hall urging the authority not to cut its subsidy

:05:03. > :05:05.to West Glamorgan Youth Music which is run jointly

:05:06. > :05:10.Concerns have been raised that re-organisation could mean a poorer

:05:11. > :05:17.There were plenty of familiar tunes on the steps of the Guildhall this

:05:18. > :05:20.evening but this lot were not there to entertain.

:05:21. > :05:23.West Glamorgan Youth Music is funded as a partnership

:05:24. > :05:26.between Swansea Council and Neath Port Talbot Council.

:05:27. > :05:28.Earlier this month, Neath Port Talbot opted not

:05:29. > :05:32.to cut its subsidy to the service but this evening Swansea councillors

:05:33. > :05:35.were told of a proposal to reduce funding for music tuition in schools

:05:36. > :05:40.These protesters are concerned that without

:05:41. > :05:43.the continuation of free tuition in schools it won't be possible

:05:44. > :05:46.to produce the same level of musical talent.

:05:47. > :05:49.The council says reform is necessary in order to make

:05:50. > :05:54.If you want people to achieve things like grade eight

:05:55. > :05:58.by the time they are 16 or 17 you don't get that starting

:05:59. > :06:07.It needs to be grounding right at the beginning in primary school.

:06:08. > :06:10.This music service has provided a platform for some of Wales's

:06:11. > :06:15.Hoping to join our musical greats in future is Katie Hier,

:06:16. > :06:18.a pupil at Pontarddulais Comrehensive School.

:06:19. > :06:20.A member of the West Glamorgan youth Orchestra,

:06:21. > :06:24.she told me she is worried others won't take as much interest in music

:06:25. > :06:27.if the current provision of tuition is lost.

:06:28. > :06:30.Children won't have the interest and they won't want to

:06:31. > :06:33.have a private tutor, they will not do it.

:06:34. > :06:38.Some people will be able to afford the music programme.

:06:39. > :06:42.We have to pay in school now but it is

:06:43. > :06:47.still like a really reduced price, it is shared among all children.

:06:48. > :06:50.With enough instruments in hand, the crowd of protesters seemed

:06:51. > :06:53.to draw the attention of Swansea Council's leader.

:06:54. > :06:55.He reassured them the music service will continue but reform

:06:56. > :07:00.Earlier today, he told me the current level of funding

:07:01. > :07:02.for school tuition doesn't make good business sense

:07:03. > :07:06.I don't think either council is saying

:07:07. > :07:10.at the moment things can continue as they are because we are aware

:07:11. > :07:13.the cost of the service which is around ?31 an hour

:07:14. > :07:17.is likely to increase because schools are able to procure

:07:18. > :07:21.music services far cheaper than that.

:07:22. > :07:25.What we need to do is make sure that the excellent service we have

:07:26. > :07:28.got is competitive and therefore that schools will want to take that

:07:29. > :07:30.service and parents will want to take that service.

:07:31. > :07:31.The joint running of the music service

:07:32. > :07:34.between Swansea and Neath Port Talbot Councils remains under

:07:35. > :07:38.As Swansea Council make the assurances

:07:39. > :07:41.the music service will continue campaigners hope the funding

:07:42. > :07:48.The Independent Police Complaints Commission says it will not now

:07:49. > :07:51.investigate the death of a dog that was deliberately run over

:07:52. > :07:55.The force had referred itself to the IPCC following

:07:56. > :08:00.the incident on the A55 near Penmaenmawr on Monday.

:08:01. > :08:03.Its commissioner says the force should carry

:08:04. > :08:05.out its own investigation with input from the RSPCA

:08:06. > :08:12.A number of residents at a care home in Colwyn Bay have fallen ill
