0:00:12 > 0:00:13Good evening.

0:00:13 > 0:00:16The leader of Labour's campaign to remain in the EU has told BBC

0:00:16 > 0:00:20Wales it was "unfair" to think European economic aid money

0:00:20 > 0:00:24would solve the problems of the poorest parts of the country.

0:00:24 > 0:00:28Alan Johnson said Wales still needed to work towards its own destiny.

0:00:28 > 0:00:30But opponents say we'd be better off if funds weren't

0:00:30 > 0:00:33diverted through Brussels.

0:00:33 > 0:00:36Rhodri Lewis reports.

0:00:36 > 0:00:39He may not be in in power anymore, but the former

0:00:39 > 0:00:42Home Secretary Alan Johnson is still one of his party's big beasts.

0:00:42 > 0:00:45That's why he's been put in charge of Labour's campaign to stay

0:00:45 > 0:00:49in the EU.

0:00:49 > 0:00:52The question of whether so-called objective 1 money has done any good

0:00:52 > 0:00:54is one which both sides of the debate hope to use

0:00:54 > 0:00:56to their advantage.

0:00:56 > 0:00:58West Wales and the Valleys are currently on their third

0:00:58 > 0:00:59round of European structural funding.

0:00:59 > 0:01:03Between 2002 and 2006, they were awarded more

0:01:03 > 0:01:06than ?1.5 billion.

0:01:06 > 0:01:10Between 2007 and 2013, ?1.8 billion was invested.

0:01:10 > 0:01:13The current round, which runs to 2020 will see a further

0:01:13 > 0:01:19?1.8 billion poured in.

0:01:19 > 0:01:20Speaking to the Sunday Politics Wales programme,

0:01:20 > 0:01:23Mr Johnson said it was unfair to expect this spending to have

0:01:23 > 0:01:29solved those areas' economic problems.

0:01:29 > 0:01:32I think to argue that yes, Europe has this ambition that

0:01:32 > 0:01:37all parts of Europe should come up to the same level of prosperity

0:01:37 > 0:01:40and you see that money come to you, but to somehow say begrudgingly,

0:01:40 > 0:01:44oh, it hasn't created a land of milk and honey,

0:01:44 > 0:01:47I think it is a bit unfair.

0:01:47 > 0:01:50I think the principle is good, I think the money is allocated,

0:01:50 > 0:01:53particularly for facilities like this, would be sadly and sorely

0:01:53 > 0:01:57missed if it went.

0:01:57 > 0:02:00His comments have been criticised by groups who want to leave the EU.

0:02:00 > 0:02:03It is interesting because one of the main arguments

0:02:03 > 0:02:07that the Remainers have as to why we should vote to stay in the EU

0:02:07 > 0:02:12is that Wales gets money from Europe.

0:02:12 > 0:02:15But, of course, as we have said all along, there is no such thing

0:02:15 > 0:02:16as EU money.

0:02:16 > 0:02:20It is our money which we send to Brussels, we get a small fraction

0:02:20 > 0:02:23of it back, we then have to you match fund it,

0:02:23 > 0:02:29we have to spend it on projects that they tell us to spend it on,

0:02:29 > 0:02:33and we have to put in EU flag on it in order to say thank you very much

0:02:33 > 0:02:35for giving us our money back.

0:02:35 > 0:02:37Alan Johnson asked what would have happened to these areas had

0:02:37 > 0:02:39they not had EU money.

0:02:39 > 0:02:41That's going to be one of the critical questions

0:02:41 > 0:02:43being discussed in the weeks and months before the referendum in

0:02:43 > 0:02:45June.

0:02:45 > 0:02:47A man has been charged with murder, after a 39-year-old

0:02:47 > 0:02:48was stabbed in Cardiff.

0:02:48 > 0:02:51Clint Sims was found in Glyndwr Road in Ely on Thursday morning.

0:02:51 > 0:02:54Stephen Pike has been charged with murder and two counts

0:02:54 > 0:02:57of possessing a knife in public.

0:02:57 > 0:03:00The 58-year-old has been remanded in custody and is due to appear

0:03:00 > 0:03:04before magistrates tomorrow.

0:03:04 > 0:03:07Hospitals could be ranked using a new one-to-five ratings

0:03:07 > 0:03:09system, with scores on public display, if the Welsh Conservatives

0:03:09 > 0:03:12win power in May's Assembly election.

0:03:12 > 0:03:14The party says cleanliness, infection rates and access

0:03:14 > 0:03:18to treatment would all be assessed, to reach a final score.

0:03:18 > 0:03:20The independent watchdog Health Inspectorate Wales would be

0:03:20 > 0:03:27responsible for implementing the idea.

0:03:27 > 0:03:30Plaid Cymru leader, Leanne Wood, has ruled out any kind of coalition

0:03:30 > 0:03:33deal with Labour after the election, if the party pushes ahead with plans

0:03:33 > 0:03:35for an M4 relief road around Newport.

0:03:35 > 0:03:38The First Minister, Carwyn Jones, has said proposals for the one

0:03:38 > 0:03:43billion pound project would be included in Labour's manifesto.

0:03:43 > 0:03:46It's the first so-called 'red line' to have been set out by Plaid,

0:03:46 > 0:03:56in any post-election negotiations.

0:03:56 > 0:03:59I've been very clear since I've been leader of this party that we have

0:03:59 > 0:04:01to spread wealth and prosperity throughout the nation and focus

0:04:01 > 0:04:04spending like that on one small corner of the nation is completely

0:04:04 > 0:04:07unacceptable to Plaid Cymru and so we would not support any

0:04:07 > 0:04:10government that wanted to go ahead with that.

0:04:10 > 0:04:12More than a thousand people have taken part in this year's

0:04:12 > 0:04:14Anglesey half marathon.

0:04:14 > 0:04:16The course started and finished on the Menai Bridge.

0:04:16 > 0:04:18For the second year in a row, Alun Vaughan from Llanberis

0:04:18 > 0:04:20won the race.

0:04:24 > 0:04:27Rugby, and in the Pro 12 the Cardiff Blues were beaten

0:04:27 > 0:04:29by the Glasgow Warriors 27-20.

0:04:29 > 0:04:33The Blues were 20-0 down at half time, but a late rally in the second

0:04:33 > 0:04:37half saw Dan Fish, Elis Jenkins and Macauley Cook all cross the line

0:04:37 > 0:04:42to secure a losing bonus point.

0:04:42 > 0:04:44Meanwhile, the Dragons lost 26-5 at Munster last night -

0:04:44 > 0:04:50their fifth straight defeat in the competition.

0:04:50 > 0:04:52Football, and Swansea coach Alan Curtis says he believes

0:04:52 > 0:04:54the side's back-to-back Premier League wins have given them

0:04:54 > 0:04:57"breathing space" over their relegation rivals.

0:04:57 > 0:05:00The Swans, led by Curtis in the absence of head coach

0:05:00 > 0:05:05Francesco Guidolin who's in hospital, beat 18th-placed

0:05:05 > 0:05:11Norwich 1-0 yesterday, to move nine points above the drop zone.

0:05:11 > 0:05:14I thought everyone played their part and I was just delighted,

0:05:14 > 0:05:17really, with the three points and it just gives us a little bit

0:05:17 > 0:05:19more breathing space.

0:05:19 > 0:05:23But, obviously, we know we have still got a lot to do.
