0:00:15 > 0:00:18Good evening.

0:00:18 > 0:00:19The body that represents retailers in Wales says businesses

0:00:19 > 0:00:22here will be disproportionately hit by the new living wage.

0:00:22 > 0:00:25The Welsh Retail Consortium is concerned about the impact

0:00:25 > 0:00:29of changes that come into force on the 1st of April.

0:00:29 > 0:00:31Adult workers on the minimum wage will get a 50-pence-an-hour

0:00:31 > 0:00:35pay rise.

0:00:35 > 0:00:44More from our Political reporter, Cemlyn Davies.

0:00:44 > 0:00:46Since the 50s, Parsons pickles has been bottling local cockles

0:00:46 > 0:00:49and mussels to be sent all over the UK

0:00:49 > 0:00:50from its home in Burry Port.

0:00:50 > 0:00:52At the moment, many of the workers here

0:00:52 > 0:00:55earn close to the national minimum wage, that's ?6.70 per hour

0:00:55 > 0:00:56for those over 21-years-old.

0:00:56 > 0:00:58But next month, the staff here will get

0:00:58 > 0:00:59a pay rise when the new living

0:00:59 > 0:01:00wage is introduced.

0:01:00 > 0:01:03That will take the minimum wage for workers aged 25 and over to

0:01:03 > 0:01:08?7.20 per hour, 50p more than the current rate.

0:01:08 > 0:01:10I think it will be good because it will help

0:01:10 > 0:01:16towards living, the cost of living and the mortgage so it'll help me.

0:01:16 > 0:01:19For the kids and everything in future it's all going

0:01:19 > 0:01:20in the right direction.

0:01:20 > 0:01:22Brilliant.

0:01:22 > 0:01:25Though 50p may not sound much, this company's wage

0:01:25 > 0:01:30bill is set to rise by ?20,000 per year, according to the managing

0:01:30 > 0:01:32director.

0:01:32 > 0:01:35It's not just the ?7.20 that it's gone up to,

0:01:35 > 0:01:40obviously, people who have responsibility and who are on that

0:01:40 > 0:01:44little bit more or more again, we've got to put it up

0:01:44 > 0:01:47pro rata.

0:01:47 > 0:01:50Whilst Colin says the company can cope for now, he believes future

0:01:50 > 0:01:53increases to the living wage could force the company

0:01:53 > 0:01:57to automate its processors further.

0:01:57 > 0:02:00It's businesses like this one where the work perhaps

0:02:00 > 0:02:03isn't particularly skilled that are likely to be most greatly

0:02:03 > 0:02:07affected by the introduction of a new living wage.

0:02:07 > 0:02:10Hospitality and retail are other sectors that could well feel

0:02:10 > 0:02:12the strain.

0:02:12 > 0:02:16For British Retail Consortium recently claimed nearly a million

0:02:16 > 0:02:19jobs could be lost across the UK as a result of the pressures

0:02:19 > 0:02:23on businesses, including the living wage.

0:02:23 > 0:02:27It estimates 74,000 shops will close and Wales will be

0:02:27 > 0:02:33disproportionately affected compared to other parts of the UK.

0:02:33 > 0:02:36Our reports are showing that we're seeing a potential loss of over

0:02:36 > 0:02:40900,000 jobs over the next decade across the UK but our modelling has

0:02:40 > 0:02:44shown that will fall most heavily in areas like Wales where we have

0:02:44 > 0:02:48possibly more an economically unstable environment.

0:02:48 > 0:02:50We are seeing accelerated rates of shop closures

0:02:50 > 0:02:55in Wales, also seeing high footfall decline.

0:02:55 > 0:02:59The national minimum wage for those below 25 years old goes

0:02:59 > 0:03:03up in October and the UK Government wants to see the hourly living wage

0:03:03 > 0:03:08rise to ?9 by 2020.

0:03:08 > 0:03:11The UK Government says it created the living wage to enable low wage

0:03:11 > 0:03:17workers to share in economic growth.

0:03:17 > 0:03:21A union has said it won't speculate on the outcome of a Tata Steel board

0:03:21 > 0:03:23meeting later this month - where it's hoped a plan

0:03:23 > 0:03:26to save the Port Talbot plant will be approved.

0:03:26 > 0:03:29750 job losses were announced in January, as part of measures

0:03:29 > 0:03:32to protect thousands more jobs at the site.

0:03:32 > 0:03:35Reports in one Sunday newspaper raise concerns that the plan,

0:03:35 > 0:03:39which involves new investment, won't be backed by the Board.

0:03:39 > 0:03:44Tata says it's invested significantly in its UK operations.

0:03:44 > 0:03:47Television cameras are to be allowed into certain crown courts in Wales

0:03:47 > 0:03:49and England for the first time.

0:03:49 > 0:03:52Cardiff Crown Court will be part of a three-month pilot

0:03:52 > 0:03:54scheme, in which judges will be filmed giving

0:03:54 > 0:03:56their sentencing remarks.

0:03:56 > 0:04:01But the footage won't be broadcast at this stage.

0:04:01 > 0:04:03The former First Minister, Rhodri Morgan, has described

0:04:03 > 0:04:07as "regrettable", comments by the Public Services Minister,

0:04:07 > 0:04:09Leighton Andrews, which led to the collapse of the Public Health

0:04:09 > 0:04:10Bill.

0:04:10 > 0:04:13A row broke out, after Mr Andrews described Plaid Cyrmu as a "cheap

0:04:13 > 0:04:16date", over a previous deal struck between Labour and Plaid.

0:04:16 > 0:04:20Rhodri Morgan said the minister didn't understand the difference

0:04:20 > 0:04:24between a joke and a put down.

0:04:24 > 0:04:27Royal Navy crew members from HMS Monmouth were given the freedom

0:04:27 > 0:04:35of the town this afternoon.

0:04:35 > 0:04:38Hundreds turned out to watch the ship's company parade

0:04:38 > 0:04:40through the centre of Monmouth, before a military and civic

0:04:40 > 0:04:42ceremony.

0:04:42 > 0:04:45The ship is at Cardiff's Britannia Dock until Thursday.

0:04:45 > 0:04:48Rugby and Wales' women have lost the final Six Nations game

0:04:48 > 0:04:50of their tournament.

0:04:50 > 0:04:52Despite two tries from Sioned Harris, they went down by 16

0:04:52 > 0:04:55points to 12 against Italy in Aberavon.

0:04:55 > 0:04:57It means they finish their championship campaign with two

0:04:57 > 0:05:01wins from five.

0:05:01 > 0:05:03Bitterly disappointed to be honest.

0:05:03 > 0:05:06I think we will probably look back on this game and kick ourselves

0:05:06 > 0:05:07a little bit.

0:05:07 > 0:05:09Came in fairly confident, you know, obviously beat

0:05:09 > 0:05:12France, clinical in France, we gave England a really good run

0:05:12 > 0:05:13for their money in Twickenham and it's

0:05:13 > 0:05:16difficult to come here and not perform, to be honest with you,

0:05:16 > 0:05:20and that's probably what we'll find hardest.

0:05:20 > 0:05:22Hundreds of people have been running, walking,

0:05:22 > 0:05:24cycling or swimming for Sport Relief today.

0:05:24 > 0:05:26Cardiff hosted one of six flagship events across the UK,

0:05:26 > 0:05:27to raise money for charity.

0:05:27 > 0:05:29And people in Swansea also did their bit,

0:05:29 > 0:05:33the Sport Relief mile was held along the promenade.

0:05:33 > 0:05:36The weather forecast and after a fairly fine evening

0:05:36 > 0:05:38with some brightness in places, it'll stay dry overnight

0:05:38 > 0:05:40with some clear spells.

0:05:40 > 0:05:43Tomorrow any mist or fog first thing will soon clear to leave a dry

0:05:43 > 0:05:44but rather cloudy day.

0:05:44 > 0:05:47Hill fog across higher ground, but increasing breaks in the cloud

0:05:47 > 0:05:49should allow some sunny spells.

0:05:49 > 0:05:52Top temperature, 10C.

0:05:52 > 0:05:57I'm back with another update at 10.20pm.

0:05:57 > 0:06:03Goodbye.

0:06:05 > 0:06:07Just a light breeze, so pleasant in the sunshine and then

0:06:07 > 0:06:09gradually turning unsettled.
