:00:00. > :00:00.threat than so-called Islamic State? Join me now on BBC Two.

:00:00. > :00:08.Our top stories: We're live at Port Talbot steelworks

:00:09. > :00:11.as the board of the Indian Steel giant Tata decides to sell

:00:12. > :00:17.And the school trip from Blaenau Gwent caught up in that

:00:18. > :00:37.Tonight, praise for the teachers' calmness.

:00:38. > :00:46.Port Talbot steelworks has been put up for sale tonight.

:00:47. > :00:51.Along with all of its parent company Tata's UK operations.

:00:52. > :00:54.The decision was taken by the company board in India.

:00:55. > :00:56.Port Talbot is the biggest steel plant in Britain and employs

:00:57. > :01:00.Many thousands more people in the wider economy depend upon it.

:01:01. > :01:02.Our business correspondent Brian Meechan is in Port Talbot

:01:03. > :01:13.Brian, tell us what happened at the meeting?

:01:14. > :01:21.There was a delegation that went to India including people from the

:01:22. > :01:26.community Steelworkers union and also the local MP here and they were

:01:27. > :01:30.pressing the case for the survival plan that had been put forward by

:01:31. > :01:36.the local management team here and hoping that it would get the backing

:01:37. > :01:42.in Mumbai. That meant 750 job losses here, but to protect over 3000 jobs

:01:43. > :01:45.in the longer term, but it did mean ?100 million of investment coming

:01:46. > :01:49.from Tata Steel, a company that has already invested very heavily in

:01:50. > :02:00.this and it seems that Tata Steel has decided that that investment

:02:01. > :02:07.will not be forthcoming. It is not just Port Talbort, it is also other

:02:08. > :02:12.places in the area. It will be interesting to see if other

:02:13. > :02:20.companies come in to rescue Tata Steel when it has that 100 -- ?1

:02:21. > :02:24.million per day loss that we were speaking about. Now we speak to

:02:25. > :02:29.Barry Evans, a worker from the steelworks. This was not the news

:02:30. > :02:32.you want to do here. Unfortunately not. We have not seen a statement

:02:33. > :02:36.yet and it is the responsibility of Tata Steel to inform the workforce.

:02:37. > :02:40.I would not like to speak your late on it. If it is true, I would expect

:02:41. > :02:44.Tata Steel to be a responsible seller. They have always promised as

:02:45. > :02:47.they would be a responsible seller so we will hold them to that. We

:02:48. > :02:52.will not allow them to walk away from us. We will be in full

:02:53. > :02:55.discussions with all parties. Calls tonight for the assembly to be

:02:56. > :03:00.recalled. Jeremy Corbyn, the Labour leader, has said the UK Government

:03:01. > :03:06.must intervene. Would you back"? Definitely. Like I said, until we

:03:07. > :03:10.see the full detail of the plan, this is a foundation industry, those

:03:11. > :03:14.two blast furnaces are some of the best in the world, the quality of

:03:15. > :03:17.steel is some of the best in the world, the workforce is second to

:03:18. > :03:20.none. They are highly skilled people. We would expect the governor

:03:21. > :03:23.to back us. One of the steel industry has gone from the whole of

:03:24. > :03:27.the UK, it will never recover. It will never come back. Tell us

:03:28. > :03:31.briefly what impact this will have on the workers in there and the

:03:32. > :03:35.wider community. Obviously, it will be distressing, but we have not seen

:03:36. > :03:39.the detail yet and I am not prepared to speculate on it. Until I have

:03:40. > :03:41.seen an official statement, it is the responsibility of Tata Steel to

:03:42. > :03:45.come forward and make a statement to the workforce and then we can get in

:03:46. > :03:48.to the detail of it and then began work on a plan but hopefully some

:03:49. > :03:52.good partners to work with. Barry Evans, thank you very much. Well,

:03:53. > :03:56.there is, it has to be said, shop here tonight. There was real hope

:03:57. > :04:00.amongst the unions that this rescue plan was going to be getting that

:04:01. > :04:04.backing from Tata Steel and it would allow them that breathing space of a

:04:05. > :04:08.year or two years to sort out the problems here and turn things

:04:09. > :04:10.around. Now it is certainly an uncertain future for the workers

:04:11. > :04:12.here and for the local community. And with Port Talbot

:04:13. > :04:15.steelworks now for sale, for those who live and work

:04:16. > :04:18.in the community? The decision to sell will not only

:04:19. > :04:21.affect workers but also thousands of people who indirectly

:04:22. > :04:23.rely on the steelworks Our reporter Ben Price has spent

:04:24. > :04:29.the day in Port Talbot. Think Port Talbot -

:04:30. > :04:34.think steelworks. It's the foundation of a town that

:04:35. > :04:37.has a strong community spirit - a spirit that's now

:04:38. > :04:39.being truly tested. For steelworker Vince Lewis -

:04:40. > :04:42.this is his regular walk home From a family of steelworkers -

:04:43. > :04:49.he knows all too well of the importance of the works

:04:50. > :04:59.to households throughout the area. It has been a difficult couple of

:05:00. > :05:07.weeks. People have already finished and people are having to look at

:05:08. > :05:12.alternative employment. There has been help and support available for

:05:13. > :05:17.that but it is a worrying time. Especially younger people who have

:05:18. > :05:25.taken on mortgages recently, taking on homes. It is very worrying. For

:05:26. > :05:33.others, the anxiety of job cuts is affecting daily life. You work with

:05:34. > :05:40.people for 25 years in the selection process. Some had been not selected,

:05:41. > :05:52.some had been selected. Everybody is just worried about their jobs. The

:05:53. > :05:56.decision taken by Tata Steel today not only affects the Steelworkers

:05:57. > :06:01.themselves but also the various industries involved with the

:06:02. > :06:05.planned. Everybody has some type of connection. Behind the railway

:06:06. > :06:12.station, infamous file is breakfast rolls, is Mandy's burger van. 27

:06:13. > :06:14.years we have been here. We have lots of customers from all over but

:06:15. > :06:18.a lot of them are from the steelworks. So what will it mean for

:06:19. > :06:25.this business, without the town's biggest employer? People just can't

:06:26. > :06:32.afford it. They will all be looking for work. Now a local councillor,

:06:33. > :06:36.this man worked for the planned for over 20 years. He has seen the

:06:37. > :06:42.workforce reduced from over 20,000 in the 1960s to around 4000 today.

:06:43. > :06:46.The community here have got heavy hearts today. They have met the

:06:47. > :06:50.challenges and the unions have met the tasks over the years, so the

:06:51. > :06:55.workforce have made tremendous efforts in spite of all of this. But

:06:56. > :06:58.as that separates now appear to be in vain, with plans to sell out, the

:06:59. > :07:02.question remains as to who, if anyone, Stan -- can step in to save

:07:03. > :07:04.the lifeblood of Port Talbort. Tributes have been paid to a five

:07:05. > :07:08.year old boy who died from Capel Bangor near Aberystwyth,

:07:09. > :07:16.and 77-year-old Margaretta Jones were among four people who died

:07:17. > :07:19.in the crash on the A470 The Headteacher at Ysgol

:07:20. > :07:24.Gymraeg Aberystwyth, where Ned Jones was a pupil,

:07:25. > :07:27.described him as a "dear The Police are appealing

:07:28. > :07:32.for witnesses. There's going to be a new approach

:07:33. > :07:35.to primary healthcare in Prestatyn. Betsi Cadwaladr Healthboard

:07:36. > :07:37.will transfer GP services to a new medical hub

:07:38. > :07:42.in the town for 23,000 patients GPs will work alongside a team

:07:43. > :07:50.of healthcare specialists at Healthy Prestatyn,

:07:51. > :07:51.which will be run by the Health Board,

:07:52. > :07:53.following the decision by two New powers allowing

:07:54. > :07:59.the Welsh Government to borrow millions of pounds to fund

:08:00. > :08:02.investment should be spent on building new houses,

:08:03. > :08:07.rather than on a new motorway south of Newport, according

:08:08. > :08:10.to the Liberal Democrats. By 2018, Welsh Ministers

:08:11. > :08:15.will be able to borrow up Labour wants spend some of this

:08:16. > :08:19.on a new M4 relief road. But Welsh Lib Dem leader,

:08:20. > :08:21.Kirsty Williams, says its priorities Parents in Blaenau Gwent have

:08:22. > :08:28.praised teachers at a local high school after pupils on a school trip

:08:29. > :08:31.were caught up in a shooting No one from Tredegar Comprehensive

:08:32. > :08:42.was hurt, but one mother who spoke to her daughter during the incident

:08:43. > :08:44.says teachers were instrumental A man with a gun tries

:08:45. > :08:52.to enter the famous white Teenagers from Tredegar

:08:53. > :08:56.comprehensive were inside On the phone to her mum as shots

:08:57. > :09:05.were fired yesterday, recalling what happens

:09:06. > :09:10.again this afternoon. The police were running past us

:09:11. > :09:14.shouting things like 'Get out of the way'

:09:15. > :09:22.and stuff like that. Then one came back and said we need

:09:23. > :09:36.For her mum it's been an emotional couple of days.

:09:37. > :09:39.We put her on loudspeakers so we could all speak to her.

:09:40. > :09:42.Thinking she would tell us what sort of day she'd had.

:09:43. > :09:45.It wasn't the reaction I was hoping for when I answered the phone.

:09:46. > :09:53.She screams down the phone, saying that some man has a gun.

:09:54. > :09:56.No one from the school was hurt, the gunman is now in hospital

:09:57. > :10:07.The school has since posted photos of pupils continuing their history

:10:08. > :10:11.Nothing can stop them according to one Facebook post.

:10:12. > :10:12.Parents are full of praise for teachers.

:10:13. > :10:15.The teacher I spoke to was reassuring, she was calm

:10:16. > :10:20.If she is calm, the kids are calm as well.

:10:21. > :10:25.I'm sure all the parents appreciate everything that they've done.

:10:26. > :10:28.I really can't wait for them to come home to thank them

:10:29. > :10:33.Chelsea's Brother, Kyle, had this message for his sister

:10:34. > :10:41.It was never likely to be a mistake any of them would forget,

:10:42. > :10:43.mums and dads still anxiously waiting to see them

:10:44. > :10:48.Let's see what the weather has in store - Sue Charles

:10:49. > :10:59.Overnight, dry spells, a few scattered showers,

:11:00. > :11:05.some wintry, with snow in the hills, possibly some frost patches

:11:06. > :11:07.in sheltered rural spots across north and central Wales

:11:08. > :11:11.with temperatures just above freezing here.

:11:12. > :11:13.The trough which brought today's showers clears away eastwards

:11:14. > :11:17.Tomorrow starts chilly, a few showers around,

:11:18. > :11:22.again some wintry with a hail risk but winds easing and generally

:11:23. > :11:27.turning drier and brighter across the UK.

:11:28. > :11:32.Showers clearing for most with sunny spells becoming more widespread.

:11:33. > :11:38.A few showers lingering across the north west of Scotland.

:11:39. > :11:42.Coolest here at 8 Celsius, warmest in south east

:11:43. > :11:48.And a drier end to the day across Wales with more sunshine

:11:49. > :11:51.later, lighter westerly winds and highs of 8 Celsius in Ceredigion

:11:52. > :11:55.Tomorrow night, maybe the odd wintry shower, otherwise dry with lighter

:11:56. > :12:02.Temperatures will drop away - sub-zero across mid Wales

:12:03. > :12:04.with a frost overnight into Thursday.

:12:05. > :12:06.A cold start, then a lovely springlike day for most of Wales.

:12:07. > :12:09.Sunny spells, variable cloud, light winds and just a very small

:12:10. > :12:12.A brief ridge of high pressure is keeping things quiet

:12:13. > :12:14.and settled on Thursday, but another weather

:12:15. > :12:22.system will try to push in from the Atlantic on Friday.

:12:23. > :12:25.Could be a dry start Friday, but turning cloudier and windy

:12:26. > :12:30.Port Talbot steelworks has been put up

:12:31. > :12:35.along with all of its parent company Tata's UK operations.

:12:36. > :12:38.The decision was taken by the company board in India.

:12:39. > :12:42.Port Talbot is the biggest steel plant in Britain and employs

:12:43. > :13:01.The MP for the area who travelled to meet the company has just given his

:13:02. > :13:04.opinion. We are very disappointed that this decision was made. We will

:13:05. > :13:10.continue to work in partnership with Tata Steel and the workforce, I'm

:13:11. > :13:12.speaking on behalf of the workforce, but the fundamental point is that

:13:13. > :13:19.the fight will always be on to ensure that we continue to make

:13:20. > :13:22.steel in Port Talbort and if that is under the ownership of Tata Steel or

:13:23. > :13:30.another company, that will remain to be seen. We will have more on that

:13:31. > :13:31.decision in breakfast from 6am tomorrow morning. That is from

:13:32. > :13:32.decision in breakfast from 6am tomorrow morning. That is from us

:13:33. > :13:33.now.
