0:00:00 > 0:00:00Two, 11 o'clock in Scotland. That is it from us,
0:00:02 > 0:00:05Good evening. Tonight's headlines:
0:00:05 > 0:00:08Emergency talks on the future of the steel industry.
0:00:08 > 0:00:11The UK Government says it is doing all it can
0:00:11 > 0:00:13but can't give any guarantees.
0:00:13 > 0:00:15And more nurses and smaller classes.
0:00:15 > 0:00:19The Liberal Democrats launch their Assembly election campaign.
0:00:34 > 0:00:35Good evening.
0:00:35 > 0:00:37"There's no guarantee of success".
0:00:37 > 0:00:41The Prime Minister's warning as the fight to save thousands
0:00:41 > 0:00:43of Welsh steel jobs gets underway.
0:00:43 > 0:00:45David Cameron chaired a meeting of key ministers in Downing
0:00:45 > 0:00:47Street this morning.
0:00:47 > 0:00:50He says his government is doing everything it can to save Britain's
0:00:50 > 0:00:53biggest steelworks at Port Talbot.
0:00:53 > 0:00:56But critics say its handling of the crisis has been "a shambles".
0:00:56 > 0:00:59Here's our parliamentary correspondent David Cornock.
0:00:59 > 0:01:02A lot at stake as cabinet ministers arrived in Downing Street
0:01:02 > 0:01:04early this morning.
0:01:04 > 0:01:07Minister, has the government ignored the plight of the Welsh people?
0:01:07 > 0:01:10Are you going to save thousands of Welsh jobs?
0:01:10 > 0:01:12The meeting, chaired by the Prime Minister,
0:01:12 > 0:01:14lasted less than an hour.
0:01:14 > 0:01:17We were concerned that there was the chance that there could have
0:01:17 > 0:01:20been an outright closure of Port Talbot and that is why
0:01:20 > 0:01:24we worked very hard with the company to make sure there is a proper sales
0:01:24 > 0:01:27process and we'll be doing everything we can to encourage
0:01:27 > 0:01:29people to come forward but this is a difficult situation,
0:01:29 > 0:01:32there's no guarantees of success.
0:01:32 > 0:01:36That warning of no guarantee of success may be seen as an attempt
0:01:36 > 0:01:42to manage expectations as Tata Steel tries to offload a business losing
0:01:42 > 0:01:45a million pounds a day.
0:01:45 > 0:01:49The Prime Minister said he isn't ruling anything out,
0:01:49 > 0:01:54but he added that nationalisation is not the right answer.
0:01:54 > 0:01:58Labour say UK ministers should have done more in the run-up to Tata's
0:01:58 > 0:02:00decision to sell.
0:02:00 > 0:02:03I think it has been a total shambles.
0:02:03 > 0:02:07It seems to be a blend of incompetence and indifference.
0:02:07 > 0:02:12Why wasn't Sajid Javid or Anna Soubry with me in Mumbai?
0:02:12 > 0:02:16Some of that delegation who went to India are now back in Port Talbot
0:02:16 > 0:02:20hoping they can make a difference to the prospects
0:02:20 > 0:02:22for Britain's biggest steelworks.
0:02:22 > 0:02:24I don't believe in nationalisation.
0:02:24 > 0:02:28I believe we're at the point in time for support from the government
0:02:28 > 0:02:31while we are looking for a buyer or while we are looking
0:02:31 > 0:02:33for the next step.
0:02:33 > 0:02:35And I think that's going to be essential going forward.
0:02:35 > 0:02:39I don't believe renationalisation is the right way to go
0:02:39 > 0:02:42for the simple reason that we don't want a hand-out or we don't
0:02:42 > 0:02:44want any charity.
0:02:44 > 0:02:48All we want is an even playing field and a fair crack of the whip.
0:02:48 > 0:02:50Besides Port Talbot, Tata also has operations
0:02:50 > 0:02:53at Llanwern in Newport, Trostre in Llanelli
0:02:53 > 0:02:55and Shotton in Flintshire.
0:02:55 > 0:02:58Together they employ almost 3,000 people.
0:02:58 > 0:03:01We are not calling for nationalisation.
0:03:01 > 0:03:05Today is the 36th anniversary for when the works behind us lost
0:03:05 > 0:03:076,500 men in one day.
0:03:07 > 0:03:10That happened under a nationalised industry.
0:03:10 > 0:03:14We need short-term help to make sure the businesses around Tata Steel
0:03:14 > 0:03:19are still viable for when a buyer is found.
0:03:19 > 0:03:22But the eyes of the world are on Port Talbot tonight.
0:03:22 > 0:03:25The UK Government claims to have intervened to prevent its overnight
0:03:25 > 0:03:30closure and give breathing space to the search for a buyer but it may
0:03:30 > 0:03:35not be enough to stop the sun setting on an iconic industry.
0:03:35 > 0:03:39The Ministry of Defence has been reprimanded over failures which led
0:03:39 > 0:03:42to the deaths of three soldiers in the Brecon Beacons.
0:03:42 > 0:03:45Reservists Craig Roberts from Penrhyn Bay, Edward Mayer
0:03:45 > 0:03:49and James Dunsby died as a result of neglect while on an SAS selection
0:03:49 > 0:03:52exercise in 2013.
0:03:52 > 0:03:55The Health and Safety Executive issued its strongest sanction,
0:03:55 > 0:03:59a crown censure, as the law does not allow the MoD to be prosecuted.
0:03:59 > 0:04:03The MoD has apologised for the failings.
0:04:03 > 0:04:07Should the Arts Council of Wales be more involved in the film
0:04:07 > 0:04:10and TV industry here?
0:04:10 > 0:04:13Its chairman, Professor Dai Smith, says it's effectively been barred
0:04:13 > 0:04:16from offering its expertise to the Welsh Government's
0:04:16 > 0:04:19creative industries team.
0:04:19 > 0:04:21In an interview with BBC Wales, he said the government's sometimes
0:04:21 > 0:04:25acted in a "knuckle-headed" and "philistine" fashion.
0:04:25 > 0:04:29In some parts of government there has been a silo mentality.
0:04:29 > 0:04:33There are some parts of government ministerial office which seem to be
0:04:33 > 0:04:37incapable of understanding co-operation and partnership
0:04:37 > 0:04:40is the name of the game, not chivvying and ordering people
0:04:40 > 0:04:45about and sometimes getting it wrong in a knuckleheaded,
0:04:45 > 0:04:47philistine fashion.
0:04:47 > 0:04:50The Liberal Democrats launched their election campaign
0:04:50 > 0:04:53in Llanrhystud, Ceredigion, this morning.
0:04:53 > 0:04:55Leader Kirsty Williams highlighted the party's key priorities,
0:04:55 > 0:04:59including providing more nurses, reducing class sizes and increasing
0:04:59 > 0:05:01the number of apprenticeships.
0:05:01 > 0:05:04Arwyn Jones reports.
0:05:04 > 0:05:08The Liberal Democrats decided to tee off their campaign at a golf
0:05:08 > 0:05:10club in Ceredigion.
0:05:10 > 0:05:13One of the constituencies where they are hopeful
0:05:13 > 0:05:14of making gains.
0:05:14 > 0:05:18We have spent the months running up to the election listening
0:05:18 > 0:05:21to what the people of Wales want and what we have heard loud
0:05:21 > 0:05:24and clear is that they just want the Welsh government to get
0:05:24 > 0:05:26the basics right for them.
0:05:26 > 0:05:28They want a health service that is going to be
0:05:28 > 0:05:31there when they need it, good schools for their children
0:05:31 > 0:05:33and they want an opportunity economy, an economy that
0:05:33 > 0:05:36does not just allow them to survive but thrive.
0:05:36 > 0:05:39We want to make sure there are more nurses in our hospitals,
0:05:39 > 0:05:42we want to make sure that we cut class sizes so that teachers have
0:05:42 > 0:05:45got time to give to individual students, and we want that
0:05:45 > 0:05:49successful economy that allows people to buy their own home.
0:05:49 > 0:05:53Launching their election campaign in a golf club,
0:05:53 > 0:05:56the Lib Dems say predictions of their electoral demise are par
0:05:56 > 0:05:58for the course.
0:05:58 > 0:06:01However, they did have a terrible time at last year's general
0:06:01 > 0:06:03election, down to just one MP in Wales.
0:06:03 > 0:06:07They could be in for a difficult time in May.
0:06:07 > 0:06:11This is going to be a tough Assembly election, no doubt about that.
0:06:11 > 0:06:14The polling suggests they are unlikely to hold
0:06:14 > 0:06:17on to the five seats they have and it is going to be very tough
0:06:17 > 0:06:21for them to hold on to one or two seats at this election.
0:06:21 > 0:06:24But the party's remaining MP in Wales told me that
0:06:24 > 0:06:27although their performances have been below par,
0:06:27 > 0:06:30they are now on the up in terms of members in Wales
0:06:30 > 0:06:34and they are hoping for a strong showing in May.
0:06:34 > 0:06:36What happens after the Assembly elections in May, that is up
0:06:36 > 0:06:39to the people of Wales to decide.
0:06:39 > 0:06:42We have got to stick to the strong message we are putting forward.
0:06:42 > 0:06:46At this point in time, all the parties are there
0:06:46 > 0:06:50with the messages they are putting to the electorate and it is early
0:06:50 > 0:06:52days in the campaign.
0:06:52 > 0:06:55We are confident the response will be a positive one.
0:06:55 > 0:06:58In politics it can be difficult to get the lay of the green
0:06:58 > 0:07:02but there is no doubt the party has been through a difficult period.
0:07:02 > 0:07:06However, as in golf, the hope is if they can
0:07:06 > 0:07:10hold their nerve, they can succeed on May 5th.
0:07:10 > 0:07:14An historic walled garden on Anglesey which was badly damaged

0:07:29 > 0:07:31not yet started.
0:07:31 > 0:07:35We are trying to restore the gardens to how they were before.
0:07:35 > 0:07:38We are not really doing many changes.
0:07:38 > 0:07:45We want to have the flavour and character of what it previously had.
0:07:45 > 0:07:49A look at the weather now. Here's Sue Charles.
