0:00:14 > 0:00:16Good evening.

0:00:16 > 0:00:18Climate activists camped alongside the UK's largest opencast coal mine

0:00:18 > 0:00:20in Merthyr Tydfil have held a day of preparations

0:00:20 > 0:00:24ahead of what they're calling "mass action" tomorrow.

0:00:24 > 0:00:26The Reclaim the Power group say they'll attempt to halt operations

0:00:26 > 0:00:29at the Ffos y Fran mine.

0:00:29 > 0:00:33Our environment correspondent, Steffan Messenger, reports.

0:00:33 > 0:00:36At the End Coal Now camp, workshops are well under way

0:00:36 > 0:00:40for those taking part in tomorrow's demonstrations.

0:00:40 > 0:00:43They have occupied a blustery patch of open moorland

0:00:43 > 0:00:46in between the existing Ffos y Fran mine and the site of another

0:00:46 > 0:00:51proposed opencast operation in the Rhymney Valley.

0:00:51 > 0:00:53We have just signed the Paris Agreement which commits us

0:00:53 > 0:00:56to keeping warming to 1.5 degrees, which is totally incompatible

0:00:56 > 0:01:00with a new mine.

0:01:00 > 0:01:02So we're here to make a stand against that and support the local

0:01:02 > 0:01:06community and their campaign.

0:01:06 > 0:01:08Opencast mining has seen something of a resurgence

0:01:08 > 0:01:09in South Wales in recent years.

0:01:09 > 0:01:12There are five sites currently in operation, supplying

0:01:12 > 0:01:16Aberthaw Power Station in the Vale of Glamorgan and the steelworks

0:01:16 > 0:01:17at Port Talbot.

0:01:17 > 0:01:21If we're not going to mine it locally in South Wales in the future

0:01:21 > 0:01:24it'll have to come from elsewhere, and one of the biggest producers

0:01:24 > 0:01:26of that sort of coal is New Zealand.

0:01:26 > 0:01:29If you say, "Let's shut down everything in sight in South Wales

0:01:29 > 0:01:31and just import it,"

0:01:31 > 0:01:33well, just be clear what you're saying.

0:01:33 > 0:01:35You are asking for a larger carbon footprint.

0:01:35 > 0:01:38But this is about more than a local dispute.

0:01:38 > 0:01:40By tomorrow they reckon there'll be around 400 activists

0:01:40 > 0:01:43from all across the UK and as far afield as France

0:01:43 > 0:01:49and the Netherlands.

0:01:49 > 0:01:52They're calling for a moratorium or suspension

0:01:52 > 0:01:54of opencast mining across the UK,

0:01:54 > 0:01:56timing their protest so that it falls days before local

0:01:56 > 0:02:00and national elections.

0:02:00 > 0:02:01In Wales, Plaid Cymru, the Liberal Democrats

0:02:01 > 0:02:03and the Green Party says they will oppose any

0:02:03 > 0:02:05new opencast sites.

0:02:05 > 0:02:07Labour, the Conservatives and Ukip say it should be down to

0:02:07 > 0:02:08local councils to decide.

0:02:08 > 0:02:12These protesters will tomorrow attempt to halt operations

0:02:12 > 0:02:15at Ffos y Fran to try and urge politicians to call time on coal.

0:02:15 > 0:02:19Those in charge of the mine say their top concern will be the safety

0:02:19 > 0:02:22of all involved.

0:02:22 > 0:02:25A letter of intent to buy Tata's UK steel assets

0:02:25 > 0:02:30will be submitted by Sanjeev Gupta's Liberty House tomorrow.

0:02:30 > 0:02:33Thousands of workers in Wales are at risk of losing their jobs

0:02:33 > 0:02:35if a suitable buyer can't be found to purchase the steelworks

0:02:35 > 0:02:40businesses here.

0:02:40 > 0:02:43Police have named a man who died in a car crash near Mold yesterday,

0:02:43 > 0:02:47as Jonathan Yeardley.

0:02:47 > 0:02:49He came from the Nannerch area, not far from where

0:02:49 > 0:02:50the collision happened.

0:02:50 > 0:02:54Two other people were injured.

0:02:54 > 0:02:56The search for the fisherman from Pembrokeshire who's

0:02:56 > 0:03:00been missing since last Thursday has ended.

0:03:00 > 0:03:04Dan Willington, from Carew, hasn't been seen since his boat hit

0:03:04 > 0:03:08rocks off St David's Head.

0:03:08 > 0:03:13His father was rescued, but later died.

0:03:13 > 0:03:16With three days to go until the Assembly election,

0:03:16 > 0:03:18the parties are making their final push for votes.

0:03:18 > 0:03:20Labour is appealing for left-leaning supporters of other parties

0:03:20 > 0:03:21to lend them their votes.

0:03:21 > 0:03:23The Conservatives, Plaid Cymru and the Liberal Democrats have

0:03:23 > 0:03:24been attacking Labour's record in Government.

0:03:24 > 0:03:31Here's our political reporter, James Williams.

0:03:31 > 0:03:32Carwyn Jones.

0:03:32 > 0:03:35He is the man Labour has put front and centre of its election campaign

0:03:35 > 0:03:38and with the opinion polls suggesting the party could concede

0:03:38 > 0:03:44political ground on Thursday, Carwyn Jones today made this appeal.

0:03:44 > 0:03:47Over the next few days we will focus on two things -

0:03:47 > 0:03:50getting out the vote and making sure those who promised to vote Labour

0:03:50 > 0:03:52vote Labour by Thursday, and secondly of course saying

0:03:52 > 0:03:55to people who live in constituencies where it is

0:03:55 > 0:03:58a straight fight between Labour and the Tories, lend us your vote.

0:03:58 > 0:04:00Make sure you don't wake up with a Conservative AM

0:04:00 > 0:04:03representing you on Friday.

0:04:03 > 0:04:05Recognition, Labour says, that the majority of tight contests

0:04:05 > 0:04:10will be between themselves and the Conservatives.

0:04:10 > 0:04:12Their focus - what they say is Labour's

0:04:12 > 0:04:16mismanagement of the Welsh NHS.

0:04:16 > 0:04:18It can't be right that on polling day that

0:04:18 > 0:04:20people will reward Labour for underinvestment in our health

0:04:20 > 0:04:23service, ?1 billion worth of cuts, a doubling of NHS waiting times,

0:04:23 > 0:04:25and no cancer drugs fund.

0:04:25 > 0:04:26What the Conservatives are promising is

0:04:26 > 0:04:29year-on-year investment, cutting waiting times

0:04:29 > 0:04:32and the creation of a cancer treatment plan for Wales.

0:04:32 > 0:04:36Plaid Cymru believes its campaign has moved up a gear in recent weeks,

0:04:36 > 0:04:38pouncing on opinion polls that suggest the party is in second

0:04:38 > 0:04:43place behind Labour.

0:04:43 > 0:04:45We've had 17 years of Labour government and Wales

0:04:45 > 0:04:47is desperate for change.

0:04:47 > 0:04:50Labour is no longer a progressive party in Wales.

0:04:50 > 0:04:52Plaid Cymru is.

0:04:52 > 0:04:55I think there is a real buzz on the streets, and people

0:04:55 > 0:04:56want change.

0:04:56 > 0:04:57We can see that.

0:04:57 > 0:04:58So am I enthused?

0:04:58 > 0:05:00Yes, I am.

0:05:00 > 0:05:03Elections have not exactly been kind to the Liberal Democrats

0:05:03 > 0:05:04in recent years.

0:05:04 > 0:05:08In the shadow of one of the greatest leaders, they

0:05:08 > 0:05:11know they're fighting for their very existence in Cardiff Bay.

0:05:11 > 0:05:14If the Welsh Liberal Democrats are not

0:05:14 > 0:05:17in the Assembly there will be nobody there to talk about the issues that

0:05:17 > 0:05:19are often sidelined or forgotten by the other parties.

0:05:19 > 0:05:22For instance, we are the only party in this election that

0:05:22 > 0:05:23has consistently highlighted

0:05:23 > 0:05:27the need to improve mental health services in Wales.

0:05:27 > 0:05:29Ukip poses the biggest threat to the Lib Dems,

0:05:29 > 0:05:31with opinion polls suggesting they could enter the Senedd

0:05:31 > 0:05:35for the very first time.

0:05:35 > 0:05:38But with only a few days to go until the voting

0:05:38 > 0:05:43booths open, all five parties have it all to play for.

0:05:43 > 0:05:46Cricket, and Glamorgan are 212 runs behind

0:05:46 > 0:05:50with nine wickets remaining on the second day of their

0:05:50 > 0:05:53County Championship match against Kent at Canterbury.

0:05:53 > 0:05:56At close of play, the visitors were 16 for one

0:05:56 > 0:05:58in their second innings, after Kent reached a first

0:05:58 > 0:06:02innings total of 488.

0:06:02 > 0:06:06The weather forecast now - here's Behnaz.

0:06:06 > 0:06:09The weather is set to become much warmer over the coming days.

0:06:09 > 0:06:12We can look forward to some sunshine tomorrow, with just the odd

0:06:12 > 0:06:13isolated shower likely.

0:06:13 > 0:06:16Through tonight we do have a few isolated showers,

0:06:16 > 0:06:18mainly along the coast, but the bulk of the country dry

0:06:18 > 0:06:20with some clear skies.

0:06:20 > 0:06:22Some mist and fog forming, perhaps pockets of frost

0:06:22 > 0:06:23as well overnight.

0:06:23 > 0:06:25Temperatures getting down to about four Celsius.

0:06:25 > 0:06:27Tomorrow high pressure is in charge of our weather,

0:06:27 > 0:06:28bringing a fairly settled day.

0:06:28 > 0:06:31First thing tomorrow morning, yes, it's a chilly start to our morning,

0:06:31 > 0:06:34but at least we do have some sunshine to look forward to.

0:06:34 > 0:06:37Just the odd isolated shower, but I think most of us will get

0:06:37 > 0:06:40away with a dry day.

0:06:40 > 0:06:42Feeling warm in the sunshine, with those temperatures getting up

0:06:42 > 0:06:43to about 13 Celsius.

0:06:43 > 0:06:45Over the coming days, those temperatures will recover

0:06:45 > 0:06:50and we can look forward to more in the way of sunshine.

0:06:50 > 0:06:53We're back in Breakfast with the latest news and sport,

0:06:53 > 0:06:55traffic updates and weather from 6am tomorrow morning.

0:06:55 > 0:06:56That's Wales Today.

0:06:56 > 0:06:57Thank you for watching.

0:06:57 > 0:07:01From all of us, good night.
