:01:05. > :01:09.As the sun rose over their makeshift camp at Ffos y Fran mine these

:01:10. > :01:11.climate campaigners set off for what they called

:01:12. > :01:16.A smaller group had gone ahead, engine

:01:17. > :01:20.the site and chaining themselves to heavy machinery.

:01:21. > :01:22.Usually, the mine behind me would be a hive of

:01:23. > :01:25.activity, with trucks and JCB is going about their work.

:01:26. > :01:27.As you can see, today, for a few hours at least,

:01:28. > :01:31.Protesters have halted operations here are Ffos y

:01:32. > :01:37.The main entrance was also closed off by demonstrations.

:01:38. > :01:39.It's all in response to plans by the owners

:01:40. > :01:41.for another opencast site in

:01:42. > :01:48.We grew up here, this environment is irreplaceable.

:01:49. > :01:51.If we continue to burn coal that crosses a red line for the climate.

:01:52. > :01:54.We need to keep coal in the ground if we are to avoid catastrophic

:01:55. > :01:58.The future of energy doesn't lie with coal, that lies in

:01:59. > :02:01.green, renewable technology and the jobs that come with it.

:02:02. > :02:04.Ffos y Fran is the UK's largest opencast mine,

:02:05. > :02:06.the size of some 400 football pitches.

:02:07. > :02:09.Its managing director told me it supports jobs in the local

:02:10. > :02:12.community as well as the steel industry in South Wales.

:02:13. > :02:15.Mining coal locally means it doesn't have to be

:02:16. > :02:18.imported from other far-flung destinations, reducing its carbon

:02:19. > :02:25.The project is also one of land reclamation, returning the

:02:26. > :02:28.landscape back to open moorland as coal is extracted.

:02:29. > :02:36.Coal is part and parcel of giving affordable anxious

:02:37. > :02:44.We want a balanced debate between climate change policies,

:02:45. > :02:46.which, you know, we all recognise are important, but affordable

:02:47. > :02:49.generation and supporting our own industries.

:02:50. > :02:51.Those protesting are urging politicians to call time on

:02:52. > :02:53.coal, timing their protest so that it falls days before local and

:02:54. > :03:00.Miller Argent say they support jobs and the local community, they

:03:01. > :03:04.support the wider steel industry, a lot of people

:03:05. > :03:05.will lose they work if

:03:06. > :03:09.Well, the thing is that there is a massive opportunity

:03:10. > :03:14.If we look towards a renewable energy future, improving

:03:15. > :03:17.There are huge amounts of sustainable

:03:18. > :03:23.We could employ those people and use those

:03:24. > :03:33.Tonight the protesters pack their bags after a

:03:34. > :03:36.long weekend in the company of the giant coalmine, the thorny issue

:03:37. > :03:39.about whether opencast sites like this have a future in the UK will be

:03:40. > :03:45.Two brothers who worked as teachers in Gwynedd have been charged

:03:46. > :03:49.with possessing and making indecent images of children.

:03:50. > :03:52.Robyn Wheldon-Williams was a teacher at Ysgol Syr Hugh Owen secondary

:03:53. > :03:58.His brother, Dyfan, was a teacher at Ysgol Y Moelwyn

:03:59. > :04:04.The charges do not relate to their work for the local authority.

:04:05. > :04:08.Both were have been bailed to appear at Caernarfon Magistrates Court.

:04:09. > :04:10.A body has been found in the Menai Straits at Treborth.

:04:11. > :04:13.Police were alerted by a member of the public last night

:04:14. > :04:15.and the body was recovered by the coastguard.

:04:16. > :04:18.The person has not yet been identified and police

:04:19. > :04:26.Two business groups who want to buy TATA steel's UK plants have formally

:04:27. > :04:29.entered the sale by submitting Letters of Intent.

:04:30. > :04:32.One is Liberty House, the commodity group which owns

:04:33. > :04:36.a former steelworks in Newport as well as Uskmouth Power station.

:04:37. > :04:40.The other interested party is a management buyout

:04:41. > :04:42.team called Excalibur, which includes the billionaire

:04:43. > :04:51.The hot strip mill here at Port Talbot has just

:04:52. > :04:56.3.2 million tonnes of steel in the last year.

:04:57. > :04:59.Tata UK's operation supplies 50% of the metal for

:05:00. > :05:05.From BMW and Honda to Tata's own brands of Jaguar and LandRover.

:05:06. > :05:08.Workers here are proud of what they do, and hope

:05:09. > :05:11.their quality and commitment will help them find a buyer for this

:05:12. > :05:15.currently loss-making iron and steel business.

:05:16. > :05:17.Blast Furnace number four here at Port Talbot is one

:05:18. > :05:22.But how many buyers will be prepared to

:05:23. > :05:27.Today, the Liberty group expressed its official interest

:05:28. > :05:31.in buying Tata Steel's remaining UK assets.

:05:32. > :05:34.However, they've always talked about steelmaking from scrap

:05:35. > :05:37.steel and not utilising these blast furnaces.

:05:38. > :05:40.Another letter of interest has also come in from a management employee

:05:41. > :05:47.They say they're confident they can make it profitable.

:05:48. > :05:49.Staff here say whoever buys the plant, they'd be getting

:05:50. > :05:53.They would be buying a fantastic asset.

:05:54. > :05:55.They are buying, obviously, the people as

:05:56. > :05:58.well, who are skilled and proud to work here.

:05:59. > :06:01.But they are buying assets operating at the top of their

:06:02. > :06:07.At the centre of this 13.5 kilometre site,

:06:08. > :06:09.are the remains of 13th century Cistercian monastery.

:06:10. > :06:12.Legend has it, if the wall tumbles, it will bring a curse

:06:13. > :06:22.Hoping to help keep this plant propped up, First Minister Carwyn

:06:23. > :06:25.Jones was at Port Talbot today promising workers he wouldn't stop

:06:26. > :06:29.But, on the frontline, those workers remain apprehensive

:06:30. > :06:34.Workers like Alan Hooper who's been working in the steel industry

:06:35. > :06:43.And I daresay his father worked here as well, probably.

:06:44. > :06:49.For it to close would be probably devastating.

:06:50. > :06:51.Tata Steel has not set a deadline, but says it cannot

:06:52. > :06:55.sustain its losses indefinitely and does not want to prolong uncertainty

:06:56. > :07:04.The government has promised to support any buyer by

:07:05. > :07:08.taking up to a 25% stake in a new business

:07:09. > :07:19.millions of pounds of finance available.

:07:20. > :07:22.More cases of hepatitis A have been confirmed at a school in Caerphilly.

:07:25. > :07:28.Glyn-Gaer Primary School in Gelligaer, plus two

:07:29. > :07:33.Public Health Wales said, 270 pupils and adults at the school
