:00:14. > :00:16.to appoint a new First Minister next week after a tied vote

:00:17. > :00:20.And we're inside Tata's steel plant in Shotton, where staff

:00:21. > :00:35.say they're optimistic, despite the company being for sale.

:00:36. > :00:40.Not quite white smoke, but Labour and Plaid Cymru say

:00:41. > :00:42.they're confident a First Minister will be appointed next week.

:00:43. > :00:45.It comes after a day of talks over which of their leaders

:00:46. > :00:50.On Wednesday, a vote by Assembly Members

:00:51. > :00:52.ended in a surprise tie between Carwyn Jones

:00:53. > :00:58.Here's our political editor, Nick Servini.

:00:59. > :01:02.There may have been a holiday feel to Cardiff Bay on a relaxed Friday

:01:03. > :01:07.afternoon, but inside one part of the Assembly at least it was far

:01:08. > :01:12.The discussions lasted around four hours.

:01:13. > :01:16.There were no details of what areas were covered and no interviews.

:01:17. > :01:19.All we had to go on was a joint statement and as statements go

:01:20. > :01:23.it was positive and clearly indicated that we can expect

:01:24. > :01:29.It said, "We have had a number of meetings today and they have

:01:30. > :01:33.We are confident we can find a way forward.

:01:34. > :01:37.That will result in the successful nomination First Minister next week.

:01:38. > :01:40.We will continue to work over the weekend and look to resume

:01:41. > :01:46.The nomination of Carwyn Jones as First Minister was supposed

:01:47. > :01:49.to have been a formality but Leanne Wood had the numbers

:01:50. > :01:52.to successfully challenge because the Conservatives

:01:53. > :01:55.and Ukip supported her, while Kirsty Williams

:01:56. > :01:59.from the Liberal Democrats supported Carwyn Jones.

:02:00. > :02:03.This has been a highly effective political ambush by Plaid Cymru.

:02:04. > :02:06.We were supposed to have had Carwyn Jones in place by now

:02:07. > :02:09.as First Minister and a full Labour Cabinet.

:02:10. > :02:14.There is no new government and the best chance of getting one

:02:15. > :02:20.In that sense, Plaid Cymru have put themselves in a much stronger

:02:21. > :02:26.These are not formal coalition talks but Labour and Plaid Cymru did form

:02:27. > :02:30.a coalition nine years ago when the former First

:02:31. > :02:33.Minister Rhodri Morgan and Plaid Cymru's Ieuan Wyn Jones

:02:34. > :02:37.led negotiations that lasted more than two months.

:02:38. > :02:40.The former Plaid Cymru leader outlined how he

:02:41. > :02:46.You needed a top line, which is what you would

:02:47. > :02:49.like to achieve, and then you needed to have a bottom line below

:02:50. > :02:54.My advice for anybody in those negotiations is to understand those

:02:55. > :02:56.constraints and therefore to work within that.

:02:57. > :02:59.Despite all the talk of cross-party deals this week at the Assembly,

:03:00. > :03:06.And if these discussions are successful it would pave the way

:03:07. > :03:13.Alun Michael was Labour's leader after the first Assembly elections.

:03:14. > :03:21.He didn't have a majority either and knows exactly what it's

:03:22. > :03:22.like to have the other parties ganging up on you.

:03:23. > :03:26.When I saw the events in the Senedd this week I had a sense of deja vu.

:03:27. > :03:29.Three parties that could only agree to be oppositional

:03:30. > :03:33.towards the Labour Party and have nothing else in common and nobody

:03:34. > :03:39.But it's a very difficult one to get out of.

:03:40. > :03:41.It's been an extraordinary first week for the Assembly

:03:42. > :04:01.charged with the murder of a soldier in Brecon.

:04:02. > :04:03.Private Matthew Boyd was found unconscious

:04:04. > :04:05.on Lion Street on Sunday morning, and died later in hospital.

:04:06. > :04:08.23-year-old Jake Vallely from Brecon appeared alongside Aaeron Evans,

:04:09. > :04:20.They were remanded in custody, to appear in court again next month.

:04:41. > :04:47.Police are investigating after a jet-skier deliberately tried

:04:48. > :04:50.to ram a pod of dolphins off Tywyn in Gwynedd.

:05:13. > :05:19.Matthew Richards spent the day there.

:05:20. > :05:22.Although it's got a long history, steel making at Shotton

:05:23. > :05:25.is about developing innovations for the future.

:05:26. > :05:28.It sells half a billion tonnes of metal a year,

:05:29. > :05:30.which it coats with zinc to prevent rust and whatever colour

:05:31. > :05:34.Customers from IKEA to the London shard.

:05:35. > :05:36.What it lacks in size compared with Port Talbot,

:05:37. > :05:41.This is a successful arm of the business.

:05:42. > :05:44.It sells most of what it produces into the construction sector

:05:45. > :05:48.and what has made it successful is the way it has been able

:05:49. > :05:51.to differentiate itself from competitors over many years.

:05:52. > :05:56.Around three quarters of what comes out of this plant is differentiated.

:05:57. > :06:00.That means very few of our competitors can produce

:06:47. > :06:50.Steel has been processed here in Shotton for 120 years

:08:16. > :08:20.slowly sinking southwards and a bit of cloud with it but its stride.

:08:21. > :08:25.Temperatures between five Celsius and 10 Celsius. Tomorrow, we do have

:08:26. > :08:28.that cold weather front clearing and be hounded high-pressure taking

:08:29. > :08:34.charge which will bring a settled day. We drag in cold air from the

:09:24. > :09:27.temperatures in towns and cities. It will get lower than that in the
