:00:45. > :00:47.and nephew William Connors had denied charges including forcing
:00:48. > :00:55.A fourth man, Lee Carbis, was jailed for kidnap.
:00:56. > :00:58.Cardiff Crown Court heard that the victim and a second man
:00:59. > :01:00.were kept in "horrific" living conditions and hunted down
:01:01. > :01:09.They came to court denying all charges against them.
:01:10. > :01:11.The prosecution said Patrick Joseph Connors had bought
:01:12. > :01:15.a man and controlled him for more than 20 years,
:01:16. > :01:20.beating him and kidnapping him whenever he tried to escape.
:01:21. > :01:23.When he stepped back from the family business, his son,
:01:24. > :01:27.Patrick Dean Connors, and nephew William Connors,
:01:28. > :01:30.would seek his permission to put the man, Michael Hughes, to work.
:01:31. > :01:35.The court heard evidence from two victims, Michael Hughes
:01:36. > :01:38.The conditions in which they were expected to live were atrocious,
:01:39. > :01:45.The police said their treatment showed a total
:01:46. > :01:49.It is about how they were treated, they were used
:01:50. > :01:56.The court heard how Patrick Joseph Connors ran
:01:57. > :02:01.The prosecution said he chose customers who were vulnerable
:02:02. > :02:04.and charged them inflated prices, while he paid the two men
:02:05. > :02:10.One of them finally went to the police after seeing
:02:11. > :02:12.television coverage about Darrell Simester,
:02:13. > :02:15.who was found after 13 years missing, and whose case sparked
:02:16. > :02:23.If a ten or 11 or a 15-year-old boy has an argument at home
:02:24. > :02:27.and thinks his parents are picking on him and walks away
:02:28. > :02:31.from the situation, he could find himself in exactly the same
:02:32. > :02:34.situation as Darrell, approached by a couple of these people,
:02:35. > :02:43.and being told that "We will look after you, find you something to do,
:02:44. > :02:46."you will be all right with us we will look after you,
:02:47. > :02:50.His case was, says the man who coordinates the Welsh Government
:02:51. > :02:52.anti-slavery policy, a wake up call for Wales.
:02:53. > :02:56.He told me reports of modern slavery are increasing, last year up to 134.
:02:57. > :02:59.Here in Wales, people are prepared now to make that call
:03:00. > :03:06.Of course, people who are enslaved, the victims, they now
:03:07. > :03:13.We have always said that we want to send that message of hope out
:03:14. > :03:15.there that we are here, that we will rescue
:03:16. > :03:19.Sentencing, the judge said Michael Hughes had been sold
:03:20. > :03:23.to Paddy Connors and had conditioned to be a serf.
:03:24. > :03:25.He said he'd carried out the kidnappings to bring
:03:26. > :03:32.All victims of modern day slavery are given the automatic
:03:33. > :03:37.Nevertheless the authorities hope their stories will encourage
:03:38. > :03:42.other people to report their experiences or suspicions.
:03:43. > :03:46.A doctor who had previously worked in a North Wales hospital has joined
:03:47. > :03:53.Issam Abuanza left his home in Sheffield in 2014.
:03:54. > :03:58.Dr Abuanza worked at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd from 2007 to 2009
:03:59. > :04:05.and is believed to be the first NHS doctor to join the militant group.
:04:06. > :04:08.A proposed management buy-out of Tata Steel's UK operations hasn't

:05:25. > :05:34.On the face of it, this was a remarkably revealing statement
:05:35. > :05:37.from the First Minister about the financial status of a bid
:05:38. > :05:44.Indeed, a statement later released from the Welsh Government comes
:05:45. > :05:50.close to suggesting he shouldn't have said it, saying any details
:05:51. > :05:52.of the bid are strictly confidential and a matter between
:05:53. > :05:59.Plaid Cymru's Adam Price responded to the comments saying
:06:00. > :06:02.the First Minister should be better briefed if he's going to be
:06:03. > :06:06.While the management buyout team Excalibur said tonight
:06:07. > :06:09.it was unable to respond to what they First Minister said
:06:10. > :06:11.because of the conditions that had been imposed on it
