:00:44. > :00:46.Now, after these three men were convicted of forcing him
:00:47. > :00:48.to work against his will, Michael Hughes has spoken
:00:49. > :00:51.about his experience for the first time.

:01:02. > :01:03.He arrived in Cardiff looking for a better life,
:01:04. > :01:05.took up the offer of work but what happened is
:01:06. > :01:11.He says he was traded from one person to another.
:01:12. > :01:27.They just confided in themselves and said, look, I've got
:01:28. > :01:31.How much are you going to give me for him?
:01:32. > :01:45.They always promised better and better but they said
:01:46. > :01:47.they would get me somewhere to live, nice caravan
:01:48. > :01:54.But I ended up in a garden shed.
:01:55. > :01:56.Tell me about the types of conditions that you lived
:01:57. > :02:04.I stayed in a garden shed till it was rotted away.
:02:05. > :02:09.No toilet. No running water.
:02:10. > :02:15.If I needed the toilet, I had to go in a field.
:02:16. > :02:17.Last week, three men were convicted of forcing Michael Hughes
:02:18. > :02:23.The judge at Cardiff Crown Court told them he had been
:02:24. > :02:29.Paddy Connors he said, had kidnapped him
:02:30. > :02:32.in order to bring his slave back to him.
:02:33. > :02:37.I was bundled into the boot of a car and taken all the way
:02:38. > :02:42.I was brought back to exactly the same place
:02:43. > :02:45.it took me five days to get away from there.
:02:46. > :03:03.I never had a life. I tried escaping.
:03:04. > :03:07.They said, you try escaping again, we will get rid of you, and no
:03:08. > :03:11.It's just you don't feel like anything really,
:03:12. > :03:16.Chief Superintendent Paul Griffiths, who led the investigation, said
:03:17. > :03:18.supporting victims is a priority for the officers involved.
:03:19. > :03:25.They are crimes of a serious nature that occurred in our society
:03:26. > :03:31.but in my experience, I cannot recall a crime occurring
:03:32. > :03:36.for such a long period of time and that has certainly affected
:03:37. > :03:40.the officers concerned, in terms of how they felt towards the victim,
:03:41. > :03:45.the support that was necessary and to make sure the offenders
:03:46. > :03:49.Michael Hughes said he shared his story with me to give others hope.
:03:50. > :03:52.If there are any others out there, please come forward
:03:53. > :03:56.because the police will believe your story.
:03:57. > :03:59.I didn't think I would ever get any help.
:04:00. > :04:03.It took me 26 years to come across but they will help you.
:04:04. > :04:12.That is what I have come to realise now.
:04:13. > :04:14.The former Wales International footballer, Ched Evans,
:04:15. > :04:18.will face a retrial for rape at the beginning of October.
:04:19. > :04:21.The date was set at a hearing in Cardiff this morning.
:04:22. > :04:25.His original rape conviction from 2012 was quashed by the Court
:04:26. > :04:32.Ched Evans arrived at Cardiff Crown Court today
:04:33. > :04:35.for a short hearing to find out about the details of his retrial.
:04:36. > :04:39.It was ordered last month after his original rape conviction
:04:40. > :04:46.After a night out in Rhyl in 2011, he was accused of raping
:04:47. > :04:51.He was convicted the following year but always protested his innocence.
:04:52. > :04:55.He was released in 2014, after he served half of a five
:04:56. > :04:59.Before his conviction, he'd been a promising striker,
:05:00. > :05:03.a record ?3 million signing for Sheffield United.
:05:04. > :05:06.Called up to the Wales squad in 2008, he had 13
:05:07. > :05:11.Once released from jail, it seemed he would not be able
:05:12. > :05:15.Athletics star Jessica Ennis-Hill threatened to pull her support
:05:16. > :05:18.from Sheffield United, if they allowed him to play again.
:05:19. > :05:21.And pressure from sponsors stopped Oldham United from signing him.
:05:22. > :05:24.After a ten month investigation, he successfully appealed his
:05:25. > :05:29.original conviction and has been granted a new trial.
:05:30. > :05:33.Ched Evans spoke only to say his name and plead not guilty.
:05:34. > :05:38.He was told his case will be heard on the 4th of October and it will be
