:03:59. > :04:00.But researchers at Swansea University have modified the
:04:01. > :04:01.bacteria so it's completely harmless.
:04:02. > :04:11.a therapeutic molecule reducing the cancer.
:04:12. > :04:15.Salmonella are actively growing and multiplying within the
:04:16. > :04:17.solid tumour in the patient and producing more and more
:04:18. > :04:24.A single dose should be sufficient and then the tumour
:04:25. > :04:27.The cancer cells have no natural defence against this
:04:28. > :04:32.modified strain of salmonella bacteria.
:04:33. > :04:34.Once those cells are attacked, they are starved of nutrients
:04:35. > :04:42.And then bacteria start growing and releasing an
:04:43. > :04:47.What makes this treatment so different is
:04:48. > :04:50.that unlike chemotherapy and radiotherapy it targets only the
:04:51. > :04:51.tumour, leaving healthy tissue unaffected.
:04:52. > :04:56.I believe this research is a game-changer.
:04:57. > :05:00.Given the therapies that currently exist are
:05:01. > :05:03.very toxic, we feel that this could potentially change the whole way
:05:04. > :05:07.The team at Swansea will be conducting
:05:08. > :05:10.more trials in the months to come, but say their research could pave
:05:11. > :05:15.the way for a new generation of cancer treatments.
